• How to make sure you server NIC performance is at best on Windows?

  I realised that I followed some obscure paper on setting NICs on Windows for too long. It might be outdated with new hardware released in past couple of years and with W2008R2. I read a bit about offloading and RSS settings on Windows and I realiased that it is very much circumstantial. Noone can really say - enable that and disable this. etc. So what I really want is for my next server try and setup testing environment and measure how my particular application will behave with different settings. The target is going to be latency of TCP primarily. Please note I am talking about latency inside the box. Are there precision tools for Windows to measure latency (down to microseconds)? P.S. I know this is not easy question. Windows time drift is awful problem for any precision test but still I am sure I am not the fist person to need that... Please share your experience

• Why is the System process listening on Port 443?

  I am having problems starting my apache server, because port 443 is already in use. It turns out, the system process (PID 4) uses the port 443. I don't have IIS installed, the services.msc shows (predicatbly) no Exchange server running, nor WWW-Services, nor IIS. I have no idea how to find out what service uses that port short of just disabling each service one after the other, and I am not even sure that would help. I would be grateful if someone could point me towards how I can get my SSL port back, thank you :) P.S.: Of course "just switch apache to another port for SSL" would solve the problem of not being able to start apache. But I'd still like to know what is so insistent about hogging port 443. :)

  I have a folder with a lot of files and folders inside it. I would like to copy that to another location so the result is a folder with the same file and folder structure, but with all files in 8.3 format. How to do it? PS: Well, some files have extensions with more than 3 characters (e.x. home.sh3d, windows.theme etc.), so when I say about transforming all filenames to 8.3 I would like to say about transforming them to a 8.X format (i.e., to do not change extensions).

• Setting Rails up on a Linode - Nginx Issue

  I am extremely new to this so please don't shoot me down: I have set up a Linode running Ubuntu, It is all sort of working except Nginx. I am following this guide: http://rubysource.com/deploying-a-rails-application/ And this for nginx: http://library.linode.com/web-servers/nginx/installation/ubuntu-10.04-lucid When I go to my IP, I get a 500 internal server error. I have tried starting nginx and it looks like it starts fine. I run this: ps awx | grep nginx and I get: 308 ? Ss 0:00 nginx: master process /usr/sbin/nginx 2309 ? S 0:00 nginx: worker process 2311 ? S 0:00 nginx: worker process 2312 ? S 0:00 nginx: worker process 2313 ? S 0:00 nginx: worker process 2850 pts/0 S+ 0:00 grep --color=auto nginx I really am not sure what else to do to get it running. • eCryptfs on ubuntu server : How to keep the home mounted without being over ssh?

  I have a daemon program who need to read in a file who is saved somewhere in my home folder. But every time I close my ssh connection, this daemon can't read the file because it appear that eCryptfs unmount the home. Maybe there is an option to force eCryptfs to not only mount with an ssh connection ? I didn't found it. Thanks. PS : I know this thread, http://askubuntu.com/questions/165608/why-is-ecryptfs-only-mounting-private-home-directory-over-ssh, but this is not the proper/good way to deal with the request.

  The Last Result column of the Scheduled Tasks Window on Windows Server 2003, displays the result of the execution of the .exe, .vbs, .ps1, .bat, .cmd, etc... that has been run at the scheduled time. There is also an archived history of this value that appears in the Scheduled Tasks Log (Found on the Scheduled Tasks Window under the Advanced->View Log) Now my question is, if I'm running a scheduled task that is a .exe, .vbs, .ps1, .bat, .cmd, etc... how do I use that process to return a specific Last Result when the process ends? P.S. If you think this question should be split up into smaller parts since I'm painting pretty broadly with it, just let me know and I'll split it into subsequent smaller questions

• How do i set a (open_)basedir with php using fastcgi/nginx?

  Essentially i found out you can limit the folders each user has access to by using php's basedir/open_basedir. I'd like to have each php only access its own files. So i wrote fastcgi_param open_basedir $document_root; in hopes that it would work. It didnt. I googled and only found results saying you cant do it via fastcgi or nginx. Is this true or can i not do it? PS: I -do- spawn php as its own user (rather then www-data) so it doesnt wreak havoc on my nonphp websites. But i still like to prevent one php script on a php site from accessing other directories (if i have a wordpress install on yourface.com its pretty obvious a valid php path is /var/www/yourface/<wordpress scripts>

• SQL 2008. I have user in a db which has no login on the server. How is it possible?

  I am talking about windows authentication. I dont have access to the server adming rights but a dbadmin sent me screenshot where my user is not in the logins of the server. and also there is only one windows group called admin - databases which I am 100% sure my guy cannot be part of it. BUT... his username is in users of my db... How come user can appear in a db not having login on the server? P.S. in the logs it prints: Login failed for user 'xxxx'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors

  Hello, I'm a windows developer(Win32api) moving from Windows to Linux. While installing linux there are lot of things to know about X11, X Window System, X Server, Xorg, Xfree86 and what not. How come we aren't aware of such things in windows? Wiki article on these scares me. Can any one explain these things? How they work? Why is it so complicated in linux & not in windows? Any good references are also appreciated. PS: I love to know internals, don't hesitate to go into depth.

  I compiled GCC 4.4.3 and installed it in /usr/local/bin, but whenever I install a port via MacPorts 1.8.2 the verbose output says MacPorts is using /usr/bin/gcc-4.2: checking for gcc... /usr/bin/gcc-4.2 How do I make MacPorts find my own GCC 4.4.3?   I have a few private files in a public folder and I want to block access to them. For example lets say I have the following files tree: DictA FileA FileA FileB FileC I want to block access to FileB and FileA in the current directory and allow access to the FileA in the DictA directory. The first thing that came to mind was to use the FilesMatch directive as follows: <FilesMatch "^(?:FileA)|(?:FileB)$"> Deny from all </FilesMatch> The problem here is that FileA inside DictA will also be blocked, which is not what I wanted. I could override that by adding another .htaccess file to DictA but I would like to know if there is a solution which wont involve that. P.S: I can't move the private files to a separate folder.

• "Device not ready" on a network share in Windows 7

  I have two computers C1 and C2 runing Windows 7 and both of them are members in a domain. On C1 I have an USB hard-disk which I shared for the users U1 and U2 giving them Read-Only permissions on the entire drive. However, even if I can see and browse the hard-disk localy (IOW from C1), from the other computer (C2) where I'm logged with U1, trying to access the C1's shared device, the C2's Windows 7 throws an error saying "Device Not Ready". Why? How can I fix this? PS: Tried to un-share and re-share again. No luck.

• Automatically make or update a copy real-time on another hard drive volume whenever files are saved to a particular folder

  Whenever I save or update a file to a particular designated folder on my C:\drive I would like to make or update a copy on my network-attached storage device, ideally saving the copy to the NAS as a version rather than overwriting a copy there, if possible. I have Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. Is there any feature built-in that can accomplish this? It has to be a real copy, not merely a pointer. I'm trying to achieve some redundancy for especially critical documents (in a variety of formats) that change frequently throughout the day. P.S. I am looking for folder-level granularity; I wouldn't want this to happen for every file on the C: volume.

• How can I prevent JungleDisk/MacOS X (10.6) creating a local volume for a removed external drive?

  Ok, here is situation: I use JungleDisk to sync an online folder on to a external drive connected to my Mac. If I right click Finder, click Go to Folder... then type /Volumes/ I see the drive linked here. Once I remove the external drive, an actual folder is created here in the name of the external drive, JungleDisk continues to copy files to this folder, rather than stop. Is this a feature of Mac OS X? Can I turn if off? After I re-connect my external drive, the link to the drive is appended with a 1 (so if I called the drive SpareDrive it becomes SpareDrive 1 as the newly created folder is called SpareDrive. I realise my explanation isn't very clear, but anyone understand this, and knows how to prevent it happening please let me know. PS: I have a low reputation as I don't use this often, I tend to use stackoverflow, but will check back here for answers.

• Arch Linux doesn't mount two USB drive?

  One is USB modem which is connected and working and problematic one is a plain vfat USB stick which contain data ....that is the fellow not mounting :( I have tried to see it by fdisk ....it doesn't mount autometically... Is there any UDEV rule for that?? Because I have put a udev rule to remove the usb-storage thing( I had to.. otherwise the usb modem wont get connected... it waits for storage to relase the port) Any idea and solution would be greatly appreciated PS: I am running Arch distribution.   We have a task which builds based on data from 4 different SVN repositories. I want to allow QA promote a build, so that the revisions participating in the build are tagged with the build number and some optional label. I have encountered the following problem - the promoted build may not be the most recent build. How do I know the SVN revision of each of the four repositories used during that build? I know that each build has this information in the revision.txt and build.xml files associated with the build, but how does it become available in the context of promotion? Thanks. P.S. • 500 internal server error php long running process

  I am trying to run a long php process and it ends with the 500 internal server error. It executes fine for about 8 mins. I have rebooted the machine after changing the php settings. PHP Config: max_execution_time: 3600 After around 10 mins ps ax|grep php: 19007 ? S 0:08 /usr/bin/php /home/gypsy/public_html/index.php I have set the ignore_user_abort true. The process gets stuck at 00:08 min and isn't executed further. Apache error log shows the error: Script timed out before returning headers: index.php It seems somehow the max_execution_time isn't working. Any suggestion would be a great help.

• Stop Ubuntu From Automatically Updating the Time

  I just need to set the date temporarily. I run this date 051918002010.00 and it sticks for just 5 seconds or so. Then it syncs with the time server. I have tried: ps aux | grep ntp but there is nothing there. I need a correct answer now, more than a more detailed answer later :) Edit: As answerers quickly discovered, my Ubuntu is running in a VirtualBox, which turned out to be relevant for some versions of the answer.   I have exactly the same problem as the fellow from this post - http://jenkins.361315.n4.nabble.com/Tag-this-build-not-working-subversion-td384218.html, except that I use build 1.413 Unfortunately, the post does not provide any workarounds except downgrading to 1.310 (from 1.315) I would gladly provide the logs, if I knew the logger names. Please, help. P.S. I have posted this issue both on jenkins issues site - https://issues.jenkins-ci.org/browse/JENKINS-9961 and in the respective google group - https://groups.google.com/d/topic/jenkinsci-users/4UVKFxXA9Jo/overview. To no avail. So, this site is my last hope - thanks to all in advance. EDIT Upgraded to 1.417 - still tagging does nothing.

• (Windows 7) Dial Up Connection Locks up the Networking Service

  I connect to the internet by using my cell phone as a dial up modem. (shh, don't tell my service provider) The connection is usually seamless and the speed is good (150kbps) but occasionally, the connection will get terminated by either the phone or the network, I'm not sure which and then Windows7 stubbornly doesn't acknowledge that the connection is dead so I can re-dial. I have tried to manually kill the connection, but then anything related to the network service refuses to open and the connection is still there. No "Network and Sharing Center", "Network Devices" and often the tray menu will refuse to pop open. The only way I have found to clear the problem is a full restart which. Logging off doesn't work and I haven't been able to find the service that is frozen. If anyone knows how to fix this or prevent this from happening or even how to go about troubleshooting I would be very grateful. ps. This problem is non-existant when tethering in linux on the same machine. (Ubunutu 9 and JoliOS)

• How do I change the output line length from the "top" linux command running in batch mode

  The following command is useful to capture the current processes that are taking up the most CPU in a file: top -c -b -n 1 > top.log The -c flag is particularly useful because it gives you the command line arguments of each process rather than just the process name. The problem is that each line of output is truncated to fit on the current terminal window. This is ok if you can have a wide terminal because you have a lot of the output but if your terminal is only 165 characters wide, you only get 165 characters of information per process and it is often not enough characters to show the full process command. This is a particular problem when the command is executed without a terminal, for example if you do it via a cron job. Does anyone know how to stop top truncating data or force top to display a certain number of characters per line? This is not urgent because there is an alternative method of getting the top 10 CPU using processes: ps -eo pcpu,pmem,user,args | sort -r -k1 | head -n 10

  I am a web developer and I've requested our Sys-Admin to setup a server for my team that will be used as a development environment. The PHP is running as a CGI. When i try to open http://myaddress/ I receive 403 Forbidden. When I try to open http://myaddress/index.php everything is fine. How do I set the server to look for index.php file by default? P.S The sysadmin is not currently here, so he cannot do it for me.

• How can I have a Windows 7 VMware guest without mouse support?

  Despite having vmmouse.present = "FALSE" mouse.vusb.absDisabled = "TRUE" pref.motionUngrab = "FALSE" in my .vmx file and a customized VMware Tools installation on the guest that does not include the mouse driver, I somehow have fully integrated mouse support for my Windows 7 VM. I can smoothly mouse from the host into the guest without needing to click or Ctrl+G in and Ctrl+Alt out. I don't want this because of the issues it causes with games. How can I get the VM to have no special mouse support while still having VMware Tools installed for its other functions (network, graphics, etc.)? The mouse works as I want without VMware Tools but not otherwise — again, despite not installing the mouse driver and having all those settings trying to disable it. Device Manager shows that the generic Windows PS/2 mouse driver is being used and not the virtual mouse driver. Guest and host are both Windows 7 Ultimate SP1, x86 and x64 respectively. I'm using VMware Player 3.1.4 and the VMware Tools installed is the latest, 8.4.6.16648.

• How to set a low process priority for everything spawned from a command prompt in XP?

  As a developer, once or twice a week I run a full build on my XP dev machine. This will run at 100% cpu for 30 or 40 minutes, making my machine usless for anything other than basic browsing & email. Is there anyway I can specify that for a given process (i.e. a command prompt) it and any process spawned by it will hae a lower priority, say taking up no more than 60 - 70% of CPU, leaving my machine more usable. I don't mind the build talking 30 or 40% longer, if I still have use of my machine while it's running. Thanks BW P.S. I'd love to be able to throw more hardware at the problem, but that isn't under my control.

  A couple of days ago my mother asked me to set up a computer at his house, she wants to use it to basic web browsing, video chat and nothing more. The problem is, neither my mother nor my sister know anything about using or maintaining a computer. What I want is to have a working base install of windows 7 and just discard everything installed, downloaded, ... when it reboots. That way I can set up a partition just for saving files and whatever they do the computer will always return to a working state at start up. can that be done? PS: Sadly linux is not an option since my sister wants to be able to play some games with my steam account and not all of them run with wine.
