• Ubuntu user expectations from 12.04 and future releases

  How much further ahead is 12.10 vs 12.04 in respect to kernel updates and applications? Example: Gimp's newest release is 2.8 which runs equally as well in both 12.04 and 12.10 and probably will in 13.04. What restricts 12.04 from having "the same" look, feel, applications and kernel as 12.10 or the upcoming 13.04? I know that it's more than a name change.....it's whats under the hood that counts. Incrementally upgrading, I feel is safer than radical changes from release to release. Trying to keep a stable desktop and current user experience, how far can I take updating applications before I absolutely have to make a distro upgrade from 12.04LTS

• Setting up virtualbox for outside access

  I have a computer running a server that my subdomain on my shared hosting account points to. IE subdomain.mydomain.org goes to my home server. Now then; what I'm wanting to do is be able to access my VirtualBox servers through that subdomain and a different port. E.G Ubuntu Virtual Box Server 1 Username:Ubuntuhost1 Password:MyUbuntuHost1 Port:4000 Internal IP: 192.168.1.60 External IP: 24.29.138.45 Ubuntu Virtual Box Server 2 Username:UbuntuHost2 Password:MyUbuntuHost2 Port:4001 Internal IP: 192.168.1.61 External IP: 24.29.138.45 Now I want to be able to access RDP number 1 through Port 4000, but if I access Port 4001 it will connect to the server on port 4001; both using the same subdomain. The next issue is the fact that even though I know what the IP addresses are on the router for the virtualbox hosts through ifconfig it doesn't change the fact that they don't show up on the router. If anyone knows how to configure this to work please help me out because I've been racking my brain to the highest extent I can. Alright; here's an edit to clarify more; Sorry. My ports on the router are edited to forward Port 4000 on Internal IP 192.168.1.63 (My Ubuntu Internal IP address) Now when I go to my Router Home Page my VirtualBox Internal IP Address doesn't show on the attached device listings, so I set up port forwarding anyways to the VirtualBox Internal IP. My end goal is when I connect to mydomain.org and I connect through port 3389 it takes me to my host computers server, but if I put in mydomain.org and go through port 4000 it's going to redirect to my VirtualBox server; Is this even possible? Sorry; I'm trying to clarify the most I think I can I just don't know how else to explain my issue.

• How to access WCF RIA service from Windows Service?

  I have a functioning SL4 application; inside the ClientBin directory I have an .svc file that describes my service: <% @ServiceHost Service="MyApp.Services.MyServiceFactory="System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Hosting.DomainServiceHostFactory" %> When I browse to http://localhost:52878/ClientBin/MyApp-Services-MyService.svc I see the following: "You have created a service. To test this service, you will need to create a client and use it to call the service. You can do this using the svcutil.exe tool from the command line with the following syntax: svcutil.exe http://localhost:52878/ClientBin/MyApp-Services-MyService.svc?wsdl" I want to access that service from a Windows Service application. My understanding is that I need to enable SOAP end-points in order to make this happen. So, I add the following to my web.config file: <domainServices> <endpoints> <add name="soap" type="System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Hosting.SoapXmlEndpointFactory, System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Hosting, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" /> </endpoints> </domainServices> Firstly, Intellisense complains about the presence of the tag, saying "The element system.ServiceModel has invalid child element domainServices." Secondly, the aforementioned Silverlight application stops working, presumably because this change breaks the underlying web services. Thirdly, it appears that the System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Hosting assembly doesn't actually contain the SoapXmlEndpointFactory type; if I try to browse to the service after adding the above to web.config I see: "Could not load type 'System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Hosting.SoapXmlEndpointFactory' from assembly 'System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Hosting, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35'." If I inspect the assembly using Reflector, I see that it contains the DomainServiceEndpointFactory and PoxBinaryEndpointFactory types, but no SoapXmlEndpointFactory. Could someone please let me know what I'm doing wrong? I can't believe that it should be this hard to simply consume a WCF RIA service in something other than a Silverlight application! • Generate texture for a heightmap

  I've recently been trying to blend multiple textures based on the height at different points in a heightmap. However i've been getting poor results. I decided to backtrack and just attempt to recreate one single texture from an SDL_Surface (i'm using SDL) and just send that into opengl. I'll put my code for creating the texture and reading the colour values. • Use Windows/Mac MySQL GUI over SSH Tunnel

  I am working on a client's website and he has hosting through 1and1. They don't allow connecting directly to their mySQL server from anywhere. I can't for instance load up a mySQL GUI on windows and just connect and work on the databases, it says host not found. His hosting account on the other hand is given access to the mySQL server even though it is in a different location. Let's say these are the servers I'm working with: His main hosting: Address: thehost.com Username: joe His mySQL server: Address: mysqlserver.com Port: 3306 Database: thedata User: dbouser The main hosting account he has comes with SSH. So if I SSH into thehost.com on port 22 and then use the mysql command to connect to mysqlserver.com, it works. I have tried to set up SSH tunneling but the problem is that it's not the mySQL server that has SSH allowed, it's the main hosting. How do I set up SSH Tunneling on both a Mac and a Windows machine so that I can run any GUI I want and I will be able to connect to the mysqlserver.com server. All based on the information above that SSH access is to thehost.com only, and thehost.com itself can connect to mysqlserver.com.

  I am basically trying to create a small registration form. If the username is already taken, I want to add the 'red' class, if not then 'green'. The PHP here works fine, and returns either a "YES" or "NO" to determine whether it's ok. • jQuery UI - addClass removeClass - CSS values are stuck

  Hi, I'm trying to do a simple animation. You show the div. It animates correctly. You hide the div. Correct. You show the div again. It shows but there is no animation. It is stuck at the value of when you first interrupted it. So somehow the interpolation CSS that is happening during [add|remove]Class is getting stuck there. The second time around, the [add|remove]Class is actually running, but the css it's setting from the class is getting ignored (I think being overshadowed). How can I fix this WITHOUT resorting to .animate and hard-coded style values? The whole point was to put the animation end point in a css class.   Ok, here was my original question; Table one contains ID|Name 1 Mary 2 John Table two contains ID|Color 1 Red 2 Blue 2 Green 2 Black I want to end up with is ID|Name|Red|Blue|Green|Black 1 Mary Y Y 2 John Y Y Y It seems that because there are 11 unique values for color and 1000's upon 1000's of records in table one that there is no 'good' way to do this. So, two other questions. Is there an efficient way to get this result? I can then create a crosstab in my application to get the desired result. ID|Name|Color 1 Mary Red 1 Mary Blue 2 John Blue 2 John Green 2 John Black If I wanted to limit the number of records returned how could I do something like this? Where ((color='blue') AND (color<>'red' OR color<>'green')) So using the above example I would then get back ID|Name|Color 1 Mary Blue 2 John Blue 2 John Black I connect to Visual FoxPro tables via ADODB. • Cron stopped working, partially working.

  Our cron script stopped working in different dates in August. What can be the possible reasons? We did not change anything. Our hosting showed us a log where we can see that cron is executing our scripts. But, nothing is happening in our scripts. If we manually execute the scripts, we're getting correct results like before. I showed the commands to hosting and they showed me that the commands are working. What should I tell my hosting? what should I do? They are php scripts which are executed by CRON and they just post to facebook and twitter. They don't execute any hard or huge things. I even asked my hosting if we broke any rules.

• Trim "Minify" inline css at runtime, expand it at edit time.

  My custom WP theme has a text block in the theme options panel that allows the user to create and maintain a custom css block that is applied to the site template at runtime. I would like to trim or "minify" this content before its stored in the database, but retain all the whitespace when its presented back to the user for editing. Would this be possible? For example, if the user has entered the following as their custom css code... .red {color:red;} .green {color:green;} .blue {color:blue;} Then I would like to store it in the database as: .red{color:red;}.green{color:green;}.blue{color:blue;} But still display it as it was input (ie, retain all the white space and line breaks) when the user is editing the content via my theme options panel.

  Hi everyone, We have a bunch of (virtual vmware) windows servers (2003 and 2008) that our hosting provider wants to move to a new domain. They also want to rename the servers. The hosting provider is in charge of maintaining the servers, while we are in charge of making sure that all our business applications are working. Our business applications include custom developed .net applications using such things as SQLServer 2008, TFS 2010, asp.net, some legacy COM+ apps, etc. To be honest I don't feel too convinced that this migration will be as painless as the hosting provider wants to make it sound. I would greatly appreciate any input on what we should be aware of when discussing the practicalities involved in the migration with the hosting provider. Thanks in advance. Klaus

• Invert bitmap colors

  I have the following problem. I have a charting program, and it's design is black, but the charts (that I get from the server as images) are light (it actually uses only 5 colors: red, green, white, black and gray). To fit with the design inversion does a good job, the only problem is that red and green are inverted also (green - pink, red - green). Is there a way to invert everything except those 2 colors, or a way to repaint those colors after inversion? And how costly are those operations (since I get the chart updates pretty often)? It should report the number of rows with the same values for (green.h.0, green.v.0, and offset.0) by only looking at the previous rows. The example above uses the expected values, but assume they are incorrect. How can I add a new column (say "count") which will count all previous rows which have the same values of the specified variables? I have gotten help on a similar problem of just selecting all rows with the same values for specified columns, so I supposed I could just write a loop around that, but it seems inefficient to me.
