• how do i use MySql ENUM type? (and is it right for a news feed)

  I'm creating a table called news_feed, this will log all the actions a user performs. Lets say I want to store user1234 deleted article412 at midday I then need a table like so timestamp | user_id | subject_type | subject_id | method . there would be 5 potential methods to log, methods = add/edit/delete/update/report and lets say 2 possible subject_type subjects = article/comment I know i could make my own key where 0=add, 1=delete etc etc but this would make my queries cumbersome to use/write as i'd need to keep consulting the key. Is there a MySql type which can read lots of identially values quickly? is this ENUM? how do i use it?!!

I would like to use facebook register fbml/fbjs in this case Would like to have facebook login used to login into my site. How to use the sessions is what I would like to know? I would like to make posts to the facebook-wall of the users registered in my site. Also if possible sent messages to them through my code whenever a new post is made to my site. • Pull news from an RDF Feed using Ruby and Nokogiri?

  I would like to pull the titleand description fields from the newsfeed at http://www.tagesschau.de/newsticker.rdf to feed them to the Mac's Text-to-Speech engine. My search for a nice Ruby Gem to do this has brought me to Nokogiri, but all examples that "pull something out" of a given XML seem to be centered around CSS somehow. Does anyone have any idea how to save the titleand description fields in an array?

• Cannot terminate process, "already terminated"

  On Windows 8, I regularly get processes into a state where I can't terminate them. Skypekit.exe seems to be the process that's most likely to trigger that issue, but other processes can do that, too. When I try to terminate these processes, I sometimes get an "access denied" message, sometimes nothing happens - but every following attempt to kill that process results in an "access denied" message, too, even though I... have administrative rights (and ran the task manager with it) own that process have the right to terminate it "Process Hacker 2" shows a more detailed error message, stating that I couldn't terminate the process because it already is terminated. Still, the process is most definitely still there, because every task manager I tested still can see it. Process Hacker's "Terminator" is unable to kill such a process, but when running the "Close the process' handles" tactic, Process Hacker gets stuck himself, leaving its windows in "not responding". In that state, other task managers are in turn unable to kill Process Hacker. The only way I found to actually end these processes is to shutdown (which works without any problems). Why is this happening? How can I kill these processes?

• How to show related content using like in mysql?

  I currently have a table for products with it's own set of tags and a table for news with it's own set of tags. I wanted to add related news to the products page so I was thinking of using like but since the column tags in the products page is something like (Products) tags- manutd, man utd, football (news) tags - manutd, blah, bruha [this one is related] (news) tags - man, utd, bruha [this one is not related] I wanted to use a query to show all news containing any of the tags(from products) seperated by commas using mysql. How should I go about constructing such a query? If there is a better way of doing this a little explanation would be helpful too. Thanks

• How to securely control access to a backend key server?

  I need to securely encrypt data in my database so that if the database is dumped, hackers are unable to decrypt the data. I'm planning on creating a simple key server on a different machine, and allowing the DB server access to it (restricted by IP address on the key server to permit the DB server). The key server would contain the key required to encrypt/decrypt data. However, if a hacker were able to get a shell on the DB server, they could request the key from the key server and therefore decrypt the data in the database. How could I prevent this (assuming all firewalls are in place, DB is not connected directly to the internet, etc)? i.e. is there some method I could use that could secure a request from the DB server to the key server so that even if a hacker had a shell on the DB server they'd be unable to make those same requests? Signed requests from the DB server could make issuing these requests less trivial - I suppose that'd help increase the amount of time it'd take to compromise the key server, something a hacker probably wouldn't have much of. As far as I can see, if someone can get a shell on the DB server everything's lost anyway. This could be mitigated by using one key per data item in the DB so at least there's not a single "master" key, but multiple keys that the hacker would need to access. What would be a secure method of ensuring requests from the DB server to the key server were authentic and could be trusted?

• Content Management Systems for Adaptive Content [closed]

  Content management systems (CMS) allow us to easily maintain blogs, news sites, general websites, and so on. Many of them are designed to manage pages of content, and provide tools to organize and customize how that content is displayed on the web. However, as explained by Mark Boulton in his Adaptive Content Management article, and by Karen McGrane in her talk on Adapting Ourselves to Adaptive Content, we are increasingly delivering content not just to the web, but also to other platforms and channels. We need tools to manage pieces of content with meaningful metadata attached. Create once, publish everywhere. The main idea is to store content cleanly, without intertwining it with presentation markup specific to the web. Because pieces of content is compartmentalized semantically, it can easily adapt to fit in different platforms and channels. Hence, it's called adaptive content. Let's look at a quick example to compare: Say I manage news articles and events. To create a news article, I would tell the CMS the type of content I'm creating, and be asked to fill in a form with individual fields tailored to news articles (e.g. headline, subtitle, full text, short snippet, and images). — i.e. pieces of content With a traditional web publishing tool, I would probably have had to create a new page under News, and then type in and format the news article in a blank WYSIWYG text editor. — i.e. pages of content As you can see, the first design allows me to individually specify content in its smallest semantic unit. When I want to display or consume it, the system can easily provide the pieces I need. So here's my question: Is there a CMS that is designed specifically with adaptive content in mind, and that is decoupled with the presentation layer? Note: This is not a discussion about the best CMS, or which CMS I should use. I am asking whether a very specific type of tool — CMS designed for adaptive content — exists for developers to use.

  I'm trying to find a better way to get the next or previous record from a table. Let's say I have a blog or news table: CREATE TABLE news ( news_id INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY AUTO_INCREMENT, news_datestamp DATETIME NOT NULL, news_author VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL, news_title VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL, news_text MEDIUMTEXT NOT NULL ); Now on the frontend I want navigation buttons for the next or previous records, if i'm sorting by news_id, I can do something rather simple like: SELECT MIN(news_id) AS next_news_id FROM news WHERE news_id > '$old_news_id' LIMIT 1 SELECT MAX(news_id) AS prev_news_id FROM news WHERE news_id < '$old_news_id' LIMIT 1 But the news can be sorted by any field, and I don't necessarily know which field is sorted on, so this won't work if the user sorts on news_author for example. I've resorted to the rather ugly and inefficient method of sorting the entire table and looping through all records until I find the record I need. $res = mysql_query("SELECT news_id FROM news ORDER BY `$sort_column` $sort_way"); $found = $prev = $next = 0; while(list($id) = mysql_fetch_row($res)) { if($found) { $next = $id; break; } if($id == $old_news_id) { $found = true; continue; } $prev = $id; } There's got to be a better way.

• spaces or %20 in links turn into + signs when page is sent as an email

  I am creating a web app that accepts input of news items (title, article, url). It has a page news.php which creates a summary of all news items inputted for specified dates, like so: News 4/25/2010 Title 1 [URL 1] Article 1 Title 2 [URL 2] Article 2 and so on... I have two other pages, namely preview.php and send.php , both of which call news.php through a file_get_contents() call. Everything works fine except when the URL contains spaces. During Preview, the urls get opened (FF: spaces are spaces, Chrome: spaces are %20). However, during Send, when received as emails, the urls don't get opened, because the spaces are converted into + signs. For example: 1. Preview in FF: http://www.example.com/this is the link.html 2. Preview in Chrome: http://www.example.com/this%20is%20the%20link.html 3. Viewed as email in both browsers: http://www.example.com/this+is+the+link.html Only #3 doesn't work (link doesn't get opened). Why are the spaces in the urls correct (spaces or %20) when previewed, but incorrect (+) when received in the emails, when in fact, the same page is generated by the same news.php? Any help appreciated :)

• NHibernate Many to Many delete all my data in the table

  I would love to thank @Stefan Steinegger and @David helped me out yesterday with many-to-many mapping. I have 3 tables which are "News", "Tags" and "News_Tags" with Many-To-Many relationship and the "News_Tags" is the link table. If I delete one of the news records, the following mappings will delete all my news records which have the same tags. One thing I need to notice, I only allowed unique tag stored in the "Tag" table. This mapping make sense for me, it will delete the tag and related News records, but how can I implement a tagging system with NHibernate? Can anyone give me some suggestion? Many thanks. Daoming. • Software to automatically download a file from FTP and then rename->replace existing file

  Hi. We pay a news agency to provide us mp3's of hourly news bulletins. They put the mp3's on a FTP server just about 10 minutes before every hour, with files named after date and time (example: 02012010_1600.mp3 or similar). I need to find some solution to download only the latest modified file from the FTP server, rename it to news.mp3 and replace the previous news.mp3 that was created. This should prefferably run on a Windows 2008 Server, as a service if its possible. Anyone have suggestion for software?

The latest release is the 0.4.14 and as I am writing it is still available on a SkyDrive link provided by Mosha Pasumansky, who wrote MDX Studio. Mosha does not work in Microsoft now and the entire BI community hopes that somebody will continue its work on this product. Unfortunately, it cannot be published on CodePlex because of some IP restrictions. Only bad news? Well, I hope no. The first good news is that MDX Studio also works with Analysis Services 2012 in Multidimensional mode. The second news is that, after having checked that we can do that, we created a web page on SQLBI web site to download the latest available release of MDX Studio. I hope it will be necessary to update it in the future, by now it is just a way to simplify the finding and download of this precious tool, and to grant that it will not disappear in case the current SkyDrive using to host the download would be discontinued, like it happened to the MDX Studio online version. Now a question to the BI Community: I know that there was some content available regarding tutorial on MDX Studio. I’d like to gather it and to put all in a single place.   I'm am new to web development. I'm creating a website where different user can have different privileges, such as creating/editing/deleting a news, or adding/editing/deleting whatever kind of content on the website. I started by creating a "user type" that would indicate the user's privileges (such as "user", "newser", "moderator", "admin", and so on), but i quickly started noticing issues that made me think that this might be a naive approach to this issue. What if i want to give a regular user the right to edit a news (for whatever reason)? Then the user would be half "user", half "newser". But the system i use can only handle one user-type. So what would be the best practice here? I was thinking of removing the concept of roles (or "user-types" such as newser) and only have the concept of "privilege", where every user could have zero to many privileges. So, to re-use the above example, if i wanted a user to have the right to edit some news, i would only have to give him a "edit news" privilege. Is this the way to go?

• Which programming language should I choose I want to build this website ...? [closed]

  Assuming that I will start with just phot sharing website. Every user can add comments to any photo. After that the site will contain news (general news), the admin can add any news and the moderators as well while the users can also add comments on this news. The website will aslo provide photos uploader, so every user will have up to 20 MB ti upload any photos they want. Other users can see these photos or can not depending on the option that the main user chose(if he wants to publish his photos or not). The site should have a small type of forum which provide the ability for admin to ad categories and for user to add topics and replies for each topic in these categoris. These are the things that I can think of now, but the website will add other features as well and services later on. Can you tell me now which programming language can help me to do all that? I need a programming language that provdies the follwing: 1- speed load for pages of the site. 2- easy to add more functions quickly and easy to edit code for any reason. 3- Secure 4- fast in displaying infromation from database.

• PHP MVC Framework Structure

  I am sorry about the amount of code here. I have tried to show enough for understanding while avoiding confusion (I hope). I have included a second copy of the code at Pastebin. (The code does execute without error/notice/warning.) I am currently creating a Content Management System while trying to implement the idea of Model View Controller. I have only recently come across the concept of MVC (within the last week) and trying to implement this into my current project. One of the features of the CMS is dynamic/customisable menu areas and each feature will be represented by a controller. Therefore there will be multiple versions of the Controller Class, each with specific extended functionality. I have looked at a number of tutorials and read some open source solutions to the MVC Framework. I am now trying to create a lightweight solution for my specific requirements. I am not interested in backwards compatibility, I am using PHP 5.3. An advantage of the Base class is not having to use global and can directly access any loaded class using $this->Obj['ClassName']->property/function();. Hoping to get some feedback using the basic structure outlined (with performance in mind). Specifically; a) Have I understood/implemented the concept of MVC correctly? b) Have I understood/implemented Object Orientated techniques with PHP 5 correctly? c) Should the class propertise of Base be static? d) Improvements?
