  • How to debug xsane "no devices available" error on 64 bit Ubuntu 10.04

    I have a Brother MFC-J615W printer/scanner and I wish to use the scanning feature across a network with a computer running 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04. I have installed the drivers from the Brother website and followed all of the instructions, and printing works fine, but xsane (installed from repositories) produces a popup with the message "no devices available" on startup. I recently had success with a similar approach when installing drivers for a Brother MFC-495CW on 32-bit Unbuntu 9.10, so I am aware of issues such as requiring root access if the driver permissions are not set correctly, but running xsane as root does not solve this problem. Are there any tools available to debug this problem further or does anyone have advice on how to proceed?

  • Disable MOUSE wakeup when doing suspend on UBUNTU

    When I do SUSPEND on ubuntu, in order to wake up, i can just move the mouse and the computer will wake up. But, I dont want that the computer is waked up when I move my mouse. How can I do that?   • Is it possible to search an apt repository via a web browser?

    I've installed the beta version of Ubuntu 10.04 server edition (x64), but the system doesn't have an internet connection. Is there a way I can find out what packages are in the apt repository with nothing more than a web browser? The reason I'm asking, is because I will have an internet connection available when the production system goes live, but it simply isn't possible to internet connect my development system.

  • Automatically generated /etc/hosts is wrong

    I've created a kickstart script to install CentOS 5.5 (32bit) in a fully automated way. The DNS/DHCP setup correctly gives the system the right hostname in both the forward and reverse lookups. dig node4.mydomain.com. +short 10.10.10.64 dig -x 10.10.10.64 +short node4.mydomain.com. In the state the installed system is right after the installation completed is as follows: cat /etc/sysconfig/network NETWORKING=yes NETWORKING_IPV6=yes GATEWAY=10.10.10.1 HOSTNAME=node4.mydomain.com echo ${HOSTNAME} node4.mydomain.com cat /etc/hosts # Do not remove the following line, or various programs # that require network functionality will fail. 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost ::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6 10.10.10.64 node4 My problem is that this automatically generated hosts file is slightly different from the way I want it (or better: the way Hadoop wants it). The last line should look like this: 10.10.10.64 node4.mydomain.com node4 What do I modify where to fix this? Thanks.

    Hi, I am working with Ubuntu latest version. While installing via apt-get install i tried to abort that by pressing Ctrl+Z. It terminate successfully ;). But next time when i tried to use apt-get, i got some error "lock" and "temporally unavailable" something like that and **I unfortunately i delete the /var/lib/dkpg folder.** after that i cant install anything from apt-get, getting an error. E: Internal Error, Could not perform immediate configuration (2) on libattr1 so how can i solve this issue?

  • Ubuntu 10.04 RGBA(Transparent theme) bug

    I tried to follow this tutorial frome ghacks.net. But I end up with a bug. Everytime I try to change the desktop background or the theme. It opens up lots of folders. And then close it back again. So I cannot do anything when I try to change the background or the theme to the default. Here is the tutorial And I can't even shutdown my machine now, please help. EDIT I tried executing these commands in the terminal sudo add-apt-repository ppa:erik-b-andersen/rgba-gtk sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install gnome-color-chooser gtk2-module-rgba sudo apt-get install murrine-themes And it installed gnome color changer. It works, and the windows became transparent, but I can't change to the default theme and I can't put a background Here's the screenshot, when I try to change something in the preferences: Its just okay if I can't change the theme, but it won't let me change the background either. Or maybe the background is changed but its transparent just like the other windows. You can see that in the taskbar(or whatever its called in Ubuntu). Its full. What can I do to atleast make the background visible.

Everything has been installed smoothly but after the installation in the login screen username is coming and when I try to enter password it is not taking any input, keyboard is not working at all. After moving away from Ubuntu keyboard and everthing else is working fine. Does anyone know what's the cause behind this ?

    I'm having trouble finding PECL on a Mac OS X 10.6 machine. I'm using the default install of Apache and PHP for development and have installed MongoDB, however I can't work with Mongo/PHP without the mongo PECL extension. Is there a copy of PECL on a Mac or will I have to install it? If so, where is it? If not, do you know of a good tutorial for getting it up-and-running? I've tried the obvious stuff: sudo find / -name "pecl" -print returns nothing Thanks very much

For that, I need to bind to the multimedia keys a set of commands like this: dbus-send --dest=org.gnome.Rhythmbox ... Now, I searched and can't find it: what signals should I send? I need only 3 events: play, forward and rewind.

    Hi there, I have a dual boot system on dell xps 9000 with windows 7 and ubuntu. But after I performed system backup on it as requested by windows 7 I am no longer able to boot into the computer, instead at the beginning after bios I get the following message: Grub loading. The symbol ' ' not found. Aborted. Press any key... I tried to change bios booting config to starting with harddrive and it still returned the same message. Using windows boot disk only asks me to do another system backup or threatens to delete my harddrive completely. The only solution I have so far is to reinstall ubuntu, but that leaves 2 additional copies of ubuntu on my computer. Is there a simpler way to fix the situation so I can actually boot into windows?     This question is similar to set open_files_limit, but there was no good answer. I need to increase my table_open_cache, but first I need to increase the open_files_limit. I set the option in /etc/mysql/my.cnf: open-files-limit = 8192 This worked fine in my previous install (Ubuntu 8.04), but now in Ubuntu 10.04, when I start the server up, open_files_limit is reported to be 1710. That seems like a pretty random number for the limit to be clipped to. Anyway, I tried getting around it by adding a line like this in /etc/security/limits.conf: mysql hard nofile 8192 I also tried adding this to the pre-start script in mysql's upstart config (/etc/init/mysql.conf): ulimit -n 8192 Obviously neither of those things worked. So where is the hoop that has been added between Ubuntu 8.04 and 10.04 through which I must jump in order to actually increase the open files limit?

  • Ubuntu 9.1 Only Sees 244 MB RAM, while BIOS and Windows Sees 1.5 GB

    I have 1.5 GB of RAM installed on an older Dell, Pentium 4. I just installed Ubuntu 9.1 and the system is only seeing 244 MB of RAM, even though there is 1.5 GB on the system. The BIOS sees all of it. I ran a Knoppix disc and it only saw 25 MB upon booting. I made no particular changes to the installation taht would affect this. I looked through the BIOS and the only setting I could see was the AGP aperture. Not even sure what this is. Anyone know where I went wrong? I also tried moving the memory modules around on the board. Booted with the 1 GB stick, still saw 244 MB.

    I tried to boot my T41 from a Ubuntu Lucid liveCD and it worried me. The white text on violet background had green pixels around it. After the splashscreen went away Ubuntu popped an alert that the installer had some errors and will now run live. The live system worked fine I guess... Did anybody experience such behaviour?

    I can't seem to find a guide or reference on how to configure the 'indicator-applet' (aka MessagingMenu) that came about in the 9.04 release of Ubuntu. It's that little mail icon that lists messaging apps. I can find docs about what it should do, people complaining about how it works, references that the API changed in 9.10, but not much on how to change the configuration. The MessagingMenu design spec page says that the config file should be at $HOME/.config/indicators/messages/applications/, but there's nothing there on my install (9.10).

  • Linking to lua libraries w/ codeblocks on linux

    After I downloaded the source for lua, I followed the install instructions, doing... make linux install make generic install I've also done the make test and it passes, printing out Hello World, from Lua 5.1. However, I can't link to the lua libraries in CodeBlocks. I know where lualib.a is (usr/local/lib) which I set in my Search Directories for the linker. I still get error messages like... undefined reference to lua_isstring Am I missing something critical here? P.S. I had this running on Windows via Visual Studio.

  • How can I perform a controlled shutdown of a virtualbox guest using VBoxManage?

    I'm currently testing Ubuntu 10.04, and have install the VirtualBox software. I have also installed Ubuntu 10.04 as a VirtualBox guest running on the host system. I've installed the VirtualBox Utils into the guest OS, as follows: sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose-guest-utils What I want to be able to do is to initiate a controlled shutdown of the guest, from the host system using the VBoxManage command. I first tried this command: VBoxManage controlvm guest poweroff which worked, but didn't initiate a controlled shutdown, it effectively pulls the plug on the guest. I've since found that this command should do the trick: VBoxManage controlvm guest acpipowerbutton but this doesn't appear to do anything. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? p.s. I don't want to use SSH & Certificates to do this, as I'm also going to be running Windows guests, and I want the solution to work for all guests.

    To install Maven, I downloaded the latest version from the website and then followed these steps: http://maven.apache.org/download.html#Installation The last step, the version control, does not work.     I am unable to receive emails on an Ubuntu 11.04 server running postfix with the Plesk control panel. I can't see the mails even on webmail.   • Is there a way to find what values comes from what file in HAL under Ubuntu?

    I've been playing with multitouch on my Thinkpad and read a few tutorials on how to setup it. One of them mentioned /usr/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/11-x11-synaptics.fdi, I edited it and enabled SHMConfig through it. Later I found out about /etc/hal/policy/ directory and put some customization for my touchpad there as well in separate fdi file. But now it looks like touchpad doesn't care about my customizations. I have gsynaptec installed and can configure it though GUI, I can configure it with synclient but I can't set any values through fdi files. I even turned off SHMConfig, reverting 11-x11-synaptics,fdi file to it's original state but it seems like SHMConfig still enabled, otherwise I wouldn't be able to configure properties in runtime. So, I was thinking, maybe there's additional hal files I don't know about. How can I find them, particularly ones responsible for turning SHMConfig on?
