  I have a monitor which was properly switched off by my Debian PC when unused. I attached it to another machine and, this times, it is never switched off. • Transferring an SQL Processor License to a virtual hosted environment

  My company is currently hosting a service in-house, and we want to move to an externally hosted environment. We would then be using a virtual server. I understand that this might be spread across multiple machines, but from my perspective as a customer, this layer is abstracted away - I shouldn't know or care about the hardware that the OS is hosted on. We have a licensed edition of SQL Server 2008. This is one Processor license. Will it be a violation of the licensing agreement to use this in a virtual environment. From the reference guide here it says When licensed Per Processor With Workgroup, Web, and Standard editions, for each server to which you have assigned the required number of per processor licenses, you may run, at any one time, any number of instances of the server software in physical and virtual operating system environments on the licensed server. However, the total number of physical and virtual processors used by those operating system environments cannot exceed the number of software licenses assigned to that server For enterprise edition there is an added option: if all physical processors in a machine have been licensed, then you may run unlimited instances of SQL server 2008 in one physical and an unlimited number of virtual operating environments on that same machine. I'm having trouble getting my head around this. Would I theoretically have to get a license for every processor in this virtual environment (which is effectively impossible because I have no way of knowing how many processors there actually are)? Or can I just say that it's hosted on one "virtual" server, so that's OK?

• Linux Flash Player with 2 Monitors: always full-screen on primary monitor

  My setup at home uses a laptop, with a larger external monitor in addition to the built-in LCD panel, which is primary. I can see the larger monitor from the rest of the room and use it as my TV, for playing DVDs and various types of web video. However, it isn't ideal for Flash video. For instance, if I watch a video from Hulu or any other Flash-based site, I can expand it to full-screen mode. However, no matter which monitor the browser window is on, the full-screen mode is always on the laptop LCD panel, which is both too small and not visible from most of the room. Does anyone know of a way to force the Flash video to play full-screen on the monitor I select instead of the primary? My video chipset is NVidia, using kernel 2.6.31 (Ubuntu). Thanks.

• UPS: Do i require a special extension cord for power in?

  I have a couple of Tripplite UPS systems. The power in cables are bright orange and about 2 meters in length. I want to put the system on the other side of the room but for some reason the UPS keep "going off" over there. So I guess the wall power sockets on that side of the room are a little dodgy. So i figured Id just go online and get some replacement UPS power IN (from wall to UPS) cables of an appropriate length. But i cant find any anywhere. (auction sites, tripplite store, cable websites). So now I'm wondering if that's just because you can use a standard extension cord of an appropriate wattage? I thought the UPS power IN cables were "special". Is that not so?

I want to put this machine in a sandbox environment, which means I want this machine to be able to access only proxy/gateway, its private used SQL Server database server, and I want to avoid network access from this machine to other machines in lab server room. Any easy solutions? BTW: my current environment is, I have a server which runs some Beta software in a Lab server room. It connects internet through proxy/gateway. • Ultra high pitched noice coming from computer

  It happened twice today, first a few minutes after turning on the computer (stopped by itself after a few minutes), then several hours later after I had turned my computer off, it started emitting a faint, ultra high pitched noise. The noise is not very loud, and almost to high pitch to be audible, but definitely noticeable for my ears. I sleep in the same room as my computer, so at first I was confused when I had just turned it off and started hearing the noise, so I went out of the room to check if the noise was in my head, but no it was definitely coming from the comp. It stopped when I turned it back on. What can be the possible causes for this phenomenon? How can I fix it?

  I had a room mate that put a livecd in my desktop and looked around on my machine. I caught him in the act and threw him out. I haven't had a room mate for a while now and so as to avoid the livecd issue again I encrypted the hard drive, the machine is running centos 6.3. Is there anyway that I can avoid typing the password in each time if I have usb key in the machine to feed the password to the system? Additional question.
