• How can a student programmer improve his teamwork skill?

  I am a student right now. Recently, I am working in a project as a leader with three other students. Due to the lack of experience, our project is progressing slowly and our members are frustrated. They do not feel sense of accomplishment in the project. I am pressured and frustrated, too. But as a team leader, I think I need to push them. But I do not know how to do. Do I help them solve coding problem or just encouragement? But if I pay too much attention on it, it would slow down my own progress. It is a not technical question, but it is very common in software development. I hope veteran programmers would give me some suggestions. Thanks!

• Viewing a large-resolution VNC server through a small-resolution viewer in Ubuntu

  I have two Ubuntu computers, one with a large screen resolution (1920x1600) that is running default ubuntu vnc server. I have another computer that has a resolution of about 1200x1024 that I use to vnc into the server (I use the default ubuntu vnc viewer). Now everything works fine except there are annoying scrollbars in the viewer because the server's desktop resolution is so much higher than the viewer's. Is there a way to: 1) Scale the server's desktop down to the viewer's resolution. I know there will be a loss of image quality, but I am willing to try it out. This should be something like how windows media player or vlc scales down the window (and does some interpolation of pixels). 2) Automatically shrink the resolution of the server to the client's when I connect and scale the resolution back when I disconnect. This seems like a less attractive solution. 3) Any other solution that gurus out there use? I am sure someone has experienced this before (annoying scroll bars) so there must be a solution out there.   I want to use boost::crc so that it works exactly like PHP's crc32() function. I tried reading the horrible documentation and many headaches later I haven't made any progress. Apparently I have to do something like: int GetCrc32(const string& my_string) { return crc_32 = boost::crc<bits, TruncPoly, InitRem, FinalXor, ReflectIn, ReflectRem>(my_string.c_str(), my_string.length()); } bits should be 32.. What the other things are is a mystery. A little help? ;)

I am working for a large Hospital and have written an Ambulance page that shows ambulance arriving in a datagrid with the time of arriving at the hospital in minutes and seconds (plus other info). • Fluid CSS: float column with overflow

  I'm using a fluid layout in the new theme that I'm working on for my blog. I often blog about code and include <pre> blocks within the posts. The float: left column for the content area has a max-width so that the column stops at a certain maximum width and can also be shrunk: +----------+ +------+ | text | | text | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | +----------+ +------+ max shrunk What I want is for the <pre> elements to be wider than the text column so that I can fit 80-character-wrapped code without horizontal scroll bars. But I want the <pre> elements to overflow from the content area, without affecting its fluidity: +----------+ +------+ | text | | text | | | | | +----------+--+ +------+------+ | code | | code | +----------+--+ +------+------+ | | | | +----------+ +------+ max shrunk But, max-width stops being fluid once I insert the overhanging <pre> in there: the width of the column remains at the specified max-width even when I shrink the browser beyond that width. I've played around with a bare-minimum scenario to reproduce the problem and noticed that doing either of the following brings back the fluidity: Remove the <pre> (doh...) Remove the float: left The workaround I'm currently using is to insert the <pre> elements into "breaks" in the post column, so that the widths of the post segments and the <pre> segments are managed mutually exclusively: +----------+ +------+ | text | | text | +----------+ +------+ +-------------+ +-------------+ | code | | code | +-------------+ +-------------+ +----------+ +------+ +----------+ +------+ max shrunk But this forces me to insert additional closing and opening <div> elements into the post text which I'd rather keep semantically pristine. Admittedly, I don't have a full grasp of how the box model works with floats with overflowing content, so I don't understand why the combination of float: left on the container and the <pre> inside it cripple the max-width of the container. I'm observing the same problem on Firefox/Chrome/Safari/Opera. IE6 (the crazy one) seems happy all the time. This also doesn't seem dependent on quirks/standards mode.

• C# Delegate Invoke Required Issue

  Scenario I have a C# windows forms application that has a number of processes. These processes run on separate threads and all communicate back to the Main Form class with updates to a log window and a progress bar. I'm using the following code below, which up until now has worked fine, however, I have a few questions. Occasionally I get OutofMemory Exceptions and the program always seems to crash around this bit of code......

• Dispatcher.Invoke not working in .NET 3.0 SP1

  I am developing a WPF windows application and am getting into a trouble running the app in .NET 3.0. Everytime that I try to access the System.Windows.Threading.Dispatcher.Invoke() method, I get a method-not-found error. Basically, I spawn a new thread from the main thread and try to change some UI properties (basically update a progress-bar) from the new thread using the following code: updateStatusDelegate usd = new updateStatusDelegate(progressBar.SetValue); Dispatcher.Invoke(usd, System.Windows.Threading.DispatcherPriority.Background, new object[] { System.Windows.Controls.ProgressBar.ValueProperty, Convert.ToDouble(perc) }); Can someone help me understand why do I encounter this error in .NET 3.0 version? I am able to get this going in .NET 3.0 SP2. But I guess .NET is not distributed independantly and is packaged only with .NET 3.5 version. My goal is to get away with the dependancy of .net 3.5 and have a dependancy on .NET 3.0 version Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Kapil

• Incorrect rendering in dojox charting stacked column?

  Hiya, I seem to be having a problem with my dojo stackedcolumn whereby the scale of some of the bars is correct for some x-axis points, but not others. • Activity tracking usecase for login tracking.

  Creating an activity tracking system for a social site. All user activiti from pooint of login til logoff are to be tracked. This means the first use case is the user's login. Every activity will have the same format so once I figure out how to track one activity then I can create chema for all activities. Currently for login I have steps like: Two solutions I have: Activity 1: User attempts to login Activity 2 A: User has successfully logged in Activity 2 B: User failed to login. Activity 2 B A: User failed to login due to invalid password Activity 2 B B: User failed to login due to locked account. OR Activty 1: User login - with result = Pass or Fail and if Fail reason = flag_id of reason. Accordingly I have to create the schema. For now I have it like this: activity_id object_id (fk) session_id (fk) user_id (fk) flag_id (fk) created_dt friend_id (fk) result (pass/fail) But ofcourse this a work in progress.

• Stop Progressbar manual scrolling in Android

In the current state, I am able to manually move the slider back and forth while download is progressing. How can I prevent the manual moving of progressbar, instead it works only based on progressbar.setProgress(progressbar.getProgress() + 1024); -- currently this works perfect, but I need to prevent the manual moving of progressbar during download. [UIView commitAnimations]; My question is, how do I set that delegate reference to nil in my dealloc method? Is there some way to retain a reference to an animation? Or fetch animations in progress?

• Debugging ASP.NET Strings Downloaded to Browser

  I'm downloading a vCard to the browser using Response.Write to output .NET strings with special accented characters. Mime type is text/x-vcard and French characters are appearing wrong in Outlook, for example Montréal;Québec .NET string shows as Montréal Québec in browser. I'm using this vCard code from CodeProject.com I've played with the System.Encoding sample code at the bottom of this linked MSDN page to convert the unicode string into bytes and then write the ascii bytes but then I get Montr?al Qu?bec (progress but not a win). Also I've tried setting content type to both us-ascii and utf-8 of the response. Apparently the vcard file downloads as unicode. If I save it as ASCII text and open in Outlook it's okay. So my assumption is I need to cause download of ASCII but am unsure if I'm doing it wrong or have a misunderstanding of where to start.

  What options are there for producing audio in a GWT app? I'm thinking of making a simple game, but I'm disappointed to see that there's still not much progress on audio support directly in GWT (yes, I realize that's largely due to lack of underlying browser support; looking forward to HTML5!) This blog post says that "audio support in GWT is rapidly evolving", yet I don't see updates in over a year, at least not at that site. It seems these are the available options: GWT Voices GWT SoundManager GWT Sound GWT Incubator I believe most of these (all of them?) rely on Flash to produce audio. I'm most inclined to go with the GWT Incubator, as that's where features slated for inclusion in GWT get started, but I've no real recommendations to go on. I would appreciate hearing about your experiences with any of these libraries, thanks.

• Blogger (Python) API: How do I retrieve a post by post ID?

  Having previously obtained a post ID from a call to gdata.blogger.client.add_post()... post = client.add_post(...) post_id = post.get_post_id() ...how do I use that post id to retrieve the post in the future? I thought maybe gdata.blogger.client.Query would be the way to go, but this doesn't support post id as a query term. The example code distributed with the Python gdata module doesn't have an example of this use case, and after poking around gdata.blogger.client.* for a while I'm not making much progress. I could obviously iterate through all the posts in the blog until find the one with the corresponding id, but that would be a terrible, terrible idea.

• Why Does the iPad Main View Refuse to go FullScreen?

  I am doing an imaging app for iPad and it requires use of the entire screen. The approach I have used on iPhone does not appear to work on iPad. In Interface Builder I have set the UIToolbar to translucent.This code echos the dimensions of the main view before and after requesting fullscreen. • Ilmerge causing dll's to open during build

  I am using ILMerge as a post build event to combine some dll's into a single dll. It is working and combining the dll's but have this weird issue. As the project builds, the dll's are opened (only external dll's, not project dll's)! And the build wont only progress when I close the application that opens the dll, in this case I have set reflector as the default application for opening dll's. The post build event command I am using is: "..............\External\Tools\ILMerge\2.10.0\ILMerge" /out:"$(ProjectDir)$(OutDir)Combined.dll" "$(TargetPath)" "$(ProjectDir)$(OutDir)Core.dll" "$(ProjectDir)$(OutDir)Resolver.dll" "$(ProjectDir)$(OutDir)AjaxMin.dll" "$(ProjectDir)$(OutDir)Yahoo.Yui.Compressor.dll" "$(ProjectDir)$(OutDir)EcmaScript.NET.modified.dll" Anyone have issues with this?

  Ok , so thanks to Claus Broch I made some progress with comparing two GPS locations. I need to be able to say "IF currentlocation IS EQUAL TO (any GPS position from a list ) THEN do something My code at the moment is : CLLocationCoordinate2D bonusOne; bonusOne.latitude = 37.331689; bonusOne.longitude = -122.030731; Which is the simulators GPS location at Infinite Loop CLLocation *loc1 = [[CLLocation alloc] initWithLatitude:bonusOne.latitude longitude:bonusOne.longitude]; double distance = [loc1 getDistanceFrom:newLocation]; if(distance <= 10000000) { Then do something } Any number under 10000000 and it assumes that there is no match.   Hi Folks, I'm working on coding the Pohlig-Hellman Algorithm but I am having problem understand the steps in the algorithm based on the definition of the algorithm. Going by the Wiki of the algorithm: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pohlig%E2%80%93Hellman_algorithm I know the first part 1) is to calculate the prime factor of p-1 - which is fine. Howeever, I am not sure what I need to do in steps 2) and 3). Can someone help with explaining this in plain english (i) - or pseudocode. I want to code the solution myself obviously but I cannot make any more progress unless i understand the algorithm. Note: I have done a lot of searching for this and I read S. Pohlig and M. Hellman (1978). "An Improved Algorithm for Computing Logarithms over GF(p) and its Cryptographic Significance but its still not really making sense to me. Thanks in advance

• How to tell what name RIA Services/EF Model uses for Associations?

  Hi, I'm working on a C#.NET 3.5 WCF RIA Services app and having an issue with my Entity Framework model. My entity Foo is mapped to a DB table and has a primary key called FooId. My Bar is mapped to a DB view. I've selectively designed this view to generate a composite key in the EF using two of the columns (by making sure they were non-nullable and the others are all nullable. This was done using NULLIF and ISNULL in the view design.) I'm able to add this view to the model with no problem but I keep running into an issue when I try to map an association between the two. Foo should contain many Bars but I keep getting the following error when I add the association: Unable to retrieve AssociationType for association 'FK_Bar_Foo' According to this page, it looks like this might work if I can properly name the association (since RIA Services looks for specific names.) I've tried several variants of names that match the pattern of other associations with no success. Does anyone know if there's a place I can look to find out what name it's looking for? Thanks,

• Silverlight layout Best Practices

  I'm writing a fairly big interface using Silverlight. As I progress, the xaml file is getting fairly big and is becoming proportionally uglier. Questions Are there any resources out there to make the xaml more readable? For example, how would I display the order of attributes (e.g. height and Width first) so that it looks the most tidy? Another issue is that there are multiple ways to implement an interface with grids and stack panels. Is there a preferred approach when using one or the other? I am looking for advice and links to other resources that can be used as examples.

• Flex 3 - Scroll bar issue

  Im currently learning Flex, and Im having the hardest time getting scroll bars to work. In short Im pretty much just making a giant form for users to fill out, contained within a viewstack component, the user will type up information in one view, and it will be displayed in the other. But right now in the first canvas i have components that run of the screen and flex doesnt seem to automate a scroll bar, so i added in 'verticalScrollPolicy="on"' to my canvas, now while it gives me a scroll bar, it gives me an empty scroll bar, I still cannot move it up or down, meaning components are still trapped off the bottom of my screen. Im I missing something amazingly simple? • ASP.NET AJAX postback and jQuery

  I have a Textbox, a LinkButton and a RadioButtonList inside an UpdatePanel. When the button is clicked, the UpdatePanel shows matching items in the radiobuttonlist. This works fine, but I now need to make the same happen OnKeyDown on the TextBox. I'm trying to cancel all AJAX requests in progress but not having much luck. Firstly, on every keypress the UpdatePanel posts back, so only one letter can be changed at a time. Secondly, the textbox loses focus on postback. I need to show the list as normal, but OnKeyDown as well as when the button is pressed.
