• "/etc/init.d/networking restart" with non-root user

  I have a thin client with 112mb RAM which boots ubuntu server 12.04.1 from a usb drive with openbox and it is to be used by students to communicate with cisco equipment. And because of this the students need to be able to reconfigure the network interface and then restart it without a reboot using the only user - cisco. This is what I have so far: adduser cisco usermod -a -G dialout cisco chown root:cisco /etc/network/interfaces chmod 664 /etc/network/interfaces chmod u+s /sbin/shutdown chmod u+s /sbin/reboot chmod u+s /sbin/poweroff chmod u+s /run/network/if* chmod u+s /sbin/ifdown chmod u+s /sbin/ifup And when I run /etc/init.d/networking restart as cisco I get: *Reconfiguring network interfaces... rm: cannot remove `eth0.dhclient': Permission denied Failed to send flush request: Operation not permitted RTNETLINK answers: Operation not permitted Any ideas on how to get this working? • How can I change guest session defaults with a script?

  I need to create a script to change the guest session defaults because the computers I installed Ubuntu on have only 448mb RAM, which is not enough to have two sessions running simultaneously. I want to write a script that will... create the guest-session folder in /etc; create the skel folder in /etc/guest-session/; copy all the content (including subfolders and files) in /tmp/guest-xxxx/; paste all that content into /etc/guest-session/skel/; and change the default desktop to GNOME Classic instead of Unity 2D (this can be separate from the script if it's easier to do as a general setting), ...all within the guest-session. This is for a project installing Ubuntu in cyber-cafes so it's critical to the project. I appreciate any help you can offer.

• Ubuntu 12.10 - Windows 8 Dual Boot (Tried boot-repair) - Dual OS option not showing

  as title says, this is my first time trying ubuntu. I have been trying since last week with continuous googling and searching, but still no luck. I had win8 x64 installed before, then tried installing Ubuntu 12.10 desktop (dual OS option) I tried like 10 times already, everytime it's showing installation complete, but when i restarted and boot from my HDD, dual boot option is not showing, directly to win8 startup I installed win8 on C before. I had a 104gb free drive to install linux to (it's installed already.. but the dual boot option is now showing) In case it helps, Laptop Model : Acer Aspire 4752 Intel Core i3, 2.30GHz Ram 4GB 64 Bit OS - Windows 8 Pro with Media Center This is the url i got from the boot-repair http://paste.ubuntu.com/1407018/ (it's not win vista, thou it seems showing so in the link) Thanks a lot.. • Invisible mouse cursor

  There have been some similar posts but nothing specific to me. Sometimes i boot my laptop and all is well. Other times I boot up and after the login screen my mouse cursor disappears, I can still use it, its just invisible. I start up fire fox and the cursor is visible but only on the application window.... My sysetem is: samsung R60 Plus, with 4gb ram and a T7500, using the ati Xpress 1250 graphics. This is with Ubuntu 11.10. Does any one know of a work around? Many thanks Rob,

• Will Ubuntu break my RAID 0 array?

  I am upgrading an older machine today with new Motherboard, RAM, and CPU. Then I am going to do a fresh install of Ubuntu 64bit. Currently the old machine has an 80gb system drive, and a 4TB RAID 0 array. The old Motherboard has no SATA ports, so I used a SATA card. Ubuntu set up the old RAID array, will it still recognize the array on a newer machine? Are there any steps I should take to ensure the array isn't damaged? It's non-crucial data, but I would rather not start over if it can be avoided. Thanks.

• AMD E1-1200 Slow?

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 32bit with Gnome 3 on a Toshiba 850D-104 for a friend of mine. This friend only surfs the web, checks for emails and plays online flash games a lot I was chocked to see that the laptop was rather sluggish. I mean you get what you pay for, with this kind of processor (AMD E1-1200, dual-core 1.4Ghz), but it's a bit too much! It takes 10 seconds to just open up Chromium (1 tab!) not to mention when he plays a flash-game it's stuttery and becomes unplayable. What can I do? I already tried Lubuntu, but it's not that much faster. I checked the resources and the ram is only 300Mb from the 6Gig installed? The Graphics card is a AMD HD Radeon 7310 (and the FGLRX-driver is installed) Any solutions for a sluggish Flash experience on Ubuntu? Thanks

• How do I report a missing package dependency during an upgrade?

  A friend of mine (somewhat new to linux) recently upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 and his OS broke from the upgrade. A few minutes of troubleshooting showed that the culprit was the PAE kernel that the upgrade decided to install since it determined he had 4GB of phyisical RAM. More specifically the upgrade forgot to install the linux-headers-generic-pae required by the closed source nvidia drivers. I'm not entirely sure how to report this bug to the devs. Its an easy fix (after booting into the non-pae kernel and installing the package everything worked), but they are encouraging users to use the built-in bug reporting system and I'm not entirely certain how to report update bugs.

• SPARC M7 Chip - 32 cores - Mind Blowing performance

  The M7 Chip Oracle just announced its Next Generation Processor at the HotChips HC26 conference. As the Tech Lead in our Systems Division's Partner group, I had a front row seat to the extraordinary price performance advantage of Oracle current T5 and M6 based systems. Partner after partner tested  these systems and were impressed with it performance. Just read some of the quotes to see what our partner has been saying about our hardware. We just announced our next generation processor, the M7. This has 32 cores (up from 16-cores in T5 and 12-cores in M6). With 20 nm technology  this is our most advanced processor. The processor has more cores than anything else in the industry today. After the Sun acquisition Oracle has released 5 processors in 4 years and this is the 6th.  The S4 core  The M7 is built using the foundation of the S4 core. This is the next generation core technology. Like its predecessor, the S4 has 8 dynamic threads. It increases the frequency while maintaining the Pipeline depth. Each core has its own fine grain power estimator that keeps the core within its power envelop in 250 nano-sec granularity. Each core also includes Software in Silicon features for Application Acceleration Support. Each core includes features to improve Application Data Integrity, with almost no performance loss. The core also allows using part of the Virtual Address to store meta-data.  User-Level Synchronization Instructions are also part of the S4 core. Each core has 16 KB Instruction and 16 KB Data L1 cache. The Core Clusters  The cores on the M7 chip are organized in sets of 4-core clusters. The core clusters share  L2 cache.  All four cores in the complex share 256 KB of 4 way set associative L2 Instruction Cache, with over 1/2 TB/s of throughput. Two cores share 256 KB of 8 way set associative L2 Data Cache, with over 1/2 TB/s of throughput. With this innovative Core Cluster architecture, the M7 doubles core execution bandwidth. to maximize per-thread performance.  The Chip  Each  M7 chip has 8 sets of these core-clusters. The chip has 64 MB on-chip L3 cache. This L3 caches is shared among all the cores and is partitioned into 8 x 8 MB chunks. Each chunk is  8-way set associative cache. The aggregate bandwidth for the L3 cache on the chip is over 1.6TB/s. Each chip has 4 DDR4 memory controllers and can support upto 16 DDR4 DIMMs, allowing for 2 TB of RAM/chip. The chip also includes 4 internal links of PCIe Gen3 I/O controllers.  Each chip has 7 coherence links, allowing for 8 of these chips to be connected together gluelessly. Also 32 of these chips can be connected in an SMP configuration. A potential system with 32 chips will have 1024 cores and 8192 threads and 64 TB of RAM.  Software in Silicon The M7 chip has many built in Application Accelerators in Silicon. These features will be exposed to our Software partners using the SPARC Accelerator Program.  The M7  has built-in logic to decompress data at the speed of memory access. This means that applications can directly work on compressed data in memory increasing the data access rates. The VA Masking feature allows the use of part of the virtual address to store meta-data.  Realtime Application Data Integrity The Realtime Application Data Integrity feature helps applications safeguard against invalid, stale memory reference and buffer overflows. The first 4-bits if the Pointer can be used to store a version number and this version number is also maintained in the memory & cache lines. When a pointer accesses memory the hardware checks to make sure the two versions match. A SEGV signal is raised when there is a mismatch. This feature can be used by the Database, applications and the OS.  M7 Database In-Memory Query Accelerator The M7 chip also includes a In-Silicon Query Engines.  These accelerate tasks that work on In-Memory Columnar Vectors. Oracle In-Memory options stores data in Column Format. The M7 Query Engine can speed up In-Memory Format Conversion, Value and Range Comparisons and Set Membership lookups. This engine can work on Compressed data - this means not only are we accelerating the query performance but also increasing the memory bandwidth for queries.  SPARC Accelerated Program  At the Hotchips conference we also introduced the SPARC Accelerated Program to provide our partners and third part developers access to all the goodness of the M7's SPARC Application Acceleration features. • higher cpu usage in ubuntu 12.04 than windows 7

  Hi I have a Intel Core i5 with 6GB of Ram using ubuntu 12.04 64bit. I noticed that whenever I run chrome which is the faster browser for me in linux) when I watch youtube, the CPU usage for Chrome is at least 13% and sometimes even 30% . but in Windows 7 same thing (youtube on chrome) rarely uses more than 6% of my CPU usage. I also notice my laptop is so hot in ubuntu 12.04 and the fan is working all the time, while in windows the laptop is so silent and the fan doesnt make much noise all the time and not as warm as in linux. is it like that for every one or is it just me?

• DVD not detected?

  As i insert a DVD in my drive (on a laptop) using Kubuntu 12.04, the DVD is not detected. The drive takes the DVD, I can hear it munching on it for a while, and then nothing. Even ejecting the DVD becomes a hassle, I need to do that at boot time otherwise the OS won't allow me to eject. Kubuntu 12.04 used to read and mount the same DVDs just fine a week ago. Edit: since I am able to boot from CD, can I safely assume the issue is not a hardware issue? Notes: 1) If mods feel enough people might be interested in this, we can make it community wiki. 2) The reason why someone would want shared hosting with dedicated IP is: i) In most shared hosting plans, you end up getting better CPU/burst RAM than a VPS provided you don't abuse. ii) Dedicated IP is good for SEO. For example, many times, you may get up getting an IP where some p*** sites are also hosted in shared hosting.

• Wifi won't enter working net after hard reboot

  I rebooted the hard way after my system jammed again because FF eats all the ram. (that's a different problem) I've always gotten away with it, but not this time. The system came up ok BUT it absolutely refuses to log onto the local house wifi net. I know the net is ok as the Windows box I'm writing this on is on it right now. I deleted the connection and rentered the password but it will not go on. /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state says everything is turned on. I know this is my fault but I'd really like to get back on the net. The machine is a Toshiba Satellite. Any suggestions?

• Looking for WAMP Benchmarking (my current WAMP is very slow, so are other solutions)

  I'm running ZWAMP WAMP stack on my local development machine. However I have found it to be very slow at serving pages from a Drupal site I have setup. By contrast, my live production site on shared hosting is reasonably quick. For me the goal with a local WAMP stack was to develop offline and send completed work to the live production site. I liked ZWAMP because it didn't require adjustments to User Access Control or other permissions. I've looked at Drupal Acquia Development Stack but found this too restrictive: only one site instance/doc root can be installed. I've looked at other DAMP stacks and heard reports of them being slow. My local development machine that I am running the WAMP stack on is a Dual Core 2.6Ghz hyperthreaded Intel i7, 4Gb RAM, 7200rpm hard disk, running Windows 64bit professional. Surely this is fast enough. So I'm looking for: Causes of the slowness of the WAMP and how to improve the speed Benchmark data of various WAMP stacks

• How to reduce the tearing while watching videos?

  I'm using the Ubuntu 10.10 with both VLC player and MPlayer and already installed the ATI drivers. I watched the same videos on Windows 7 and Ubuntu. But on Ubuntu the images have a lot of tearing. I tried some newbish-configs on my ATI config tool, but nothing changed. I tried videos in mkv, avi, rmvb... and in all kinds of resolutions. I would love to see some tips or maybe a solution to this problem. (I have searched for similar questions but I didn't find any :/ ) The english is not my primary lang so sorry for my mistakes. • Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix on Asus Eee PC 701 4G - boot process hangs up

  I've got an old Eee PC 701 4G with the following specifications: 512 MB RAM 4GB SSD drive SM223AC 8GB SD card extension Screen resolution: 800 x 480 BIOS Revision 1101 (05/16/2008) EC Firmware version: EPC-079 Windows XP SP3 works fine on it, but I decided to switch my OS to Ubuntu. I have downloaded an Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix ISO and wrote it to my FAT32 SD card using Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.3.3, as described on ubuntu.com During standard load from the SD card the boot process hangs up with black screen. If I'll press F6 while preloading Ubuntu, it sucessfully displays the boot menu, selecting language and showing 2 main commands: "Run ubuntu from USB drive" and "Insall Ubuntu". Selecting either of these commands leading to the same result - after some background work the main loading indicator is displayed ("Ubuntu" text with dotted progress bar under it), and it's progressing forever without any effect. Is Ubuntu 10.10 compatible with my Eee PC at all? How to boot it correctly?

• Fork bomb protection not working : Amount of processes not limited

  I just came to realize that my system is not limiting the amount of processes per user properly thus not preventing a user from dring a fork-bomb and crashing the entire system: user@thebe:~$ cat /etc/security/limits.conf | grep user user hard nproc 512 user@thebe:~$ ulimit -u 1024 user@thebe:~$ :(){ :|:& };: [1] 2559 user@thebe:~$ ht-bash: fork: Cannot allocate memory -bash: fork: Cannot allocate memory -bash: fork: Cannot allocate memory -bash: fork: Cannot allocate memory -bash: fork: Cannot allocate memory -bash: fork: Cannot allocate memory -bash: fork: Cannot allocate memory -bash: fork: Cannot allocate memory ... Connection to thebe closed by remote host. Is this a bug or why is it ignoring the limit in limits.conf and why is not applying the limit that ulimit -n claims it to be? PS: I really don't think the memory limit is hit before the process limit. This machine has 8GB ram and it was using only 4% of it at the time when I dropped the fork bomb.

• High CPU load - Ubuntu 14.04

  I noticed that sometimes when browsing (with other processes in the background), I get very high CPU load for the browser process (over 100%) and the computer becomes really slow. I tried switching from Firefox (with just a few extensions) to Chromium, but same thing happens without me visiting graphics-intense sites, flash sites or anything like that. I also noticed python or node (when running "make") produce the same high CPU load from time to time so this is not necessarily browser-related. When I only have a browser open, it doesn't seem to happen and everything is fine in Windows 7. I switched from unity to gnome3 with no effect. Specs: lenovo w510 (4gb RAM, i7 q820 @ 1.73) + up to date Ubuntu 14.04 64bit. Printscreen: http://imgur.com/8MZJNKC Do you guys have any idea why this might happen? • Lubuntu 12.04 PPC slow startup and shutdown

  I've installed Lubuntu 12.04 on a Powerbook G4 (PowerPC 1GHz, 1 gb ram, Geforce MX 440). Everything works perfectly except the startup and shutdown. To startup my system I have to wait about 3 minutes (and similar time to shutdown) Giving a look @ /var/log/dmesg I noticed the following [drm] nouveau 0000:00:10.0: Detected an NV10 generation card (0x017900a5) checking generic (b8004000 151800) vs hw (b8000000 80000000) fb: conflicting fb hw usage nouveaufb vs 0Ffb NVDA,Displ - removing generic driver The only issue concerns Nouveau ... inside my /var/log/kern.log says what follows BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! I've booted passing the "nouveau.modeset=0" parameter and the system boot in 15 seconds but with 4 bit graphics -- Any idea how to fix? Thanks in advance for any help

• Ubuntu One using 500 MB memory also when idle

  I'm a Dropbox convert (I hope!), but after having used Ubuntu One for a couple of weeks I notice a few differences from Dropbox. The most glaring difference is that the sync daemon constantly takes 500MB ram on my system (Ubuntu 12.04 x64). It hogs this amount of memory as soon as I log in, does it's initial sync/check but keeps the memory. All in all it seems to me that Ubuntu One uses more system resources than Dropbox. I am syncing the same folders and files with Ubuntu One as I was with Dropbox. Also, afte I log in Ubuntu One grids at 100% CPU for at least five minutes which can be annoying on a laptop, but is not a showstopper. I'm wondering if this is a problem on my system, or if Ubuntu One is expected to use that amount of memory even when idle?

• ubuntu 12.04 install black screen

  When I try to install Ubuntu 12.04 i get the grub 1.99 screen that allows me to select ubuntu install, or try ubuntu with out installing. When i select install ubuntu the screen goes black and i can tell the hard drive is running, but there are no on screen prompts. I looked into this problem and attempted to change a few variables by pressing "e" to edit the ubuntu install boot screen I then changed splash to nospash, quiet to noquiet, and add nomodeset at the end of the line that starts with linux before the "--". This still changes nothing when i press F10 to boot. I have tried removing quiet and splash altogether and adding nomodeset, but still to no avail. I am a little frustrated and don't know what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
