• User Management: Managing users in user-defined "groups", database schema and logistics

  I'm a noob, development wise and logistically-wise. I'm developing a site that lets people take a test... My client wants the ability for a user with the roll/privledge "admin" (a step below a super-admin) to be allowed to create users and only see/edit the users that they create... The users created in that "category" or group need some information that their superior provides. For example, I log in as a "manager", I have the ability to invite people to take the test, and manage those people. Before adding those people, I will have filled out a short survey about myself... Right now, the users that are invited will be asked some of the same questions as the manager. I'd like to cut down the redundancy by using the information put into the database by the manager and apply it to the invited users. How do I set up my database to work with this criterion? I'm a little confused about how to do this! Let me know if I can add more details... (This is a mysql and php app)

I've used the Vertex template successfully throughout my Graph, return pointers to Vertices, etc. Now for the first time I am trying to declare and instantiate a Vertex object, and gcc is telling me that my 'declarator' is 'invalid'. • Running Visual Studio 2010 in a University Campus

  We have just installed Windows 7 Enterprise x64 in one of our computer labs being used by students for programming. However, when we installed Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate on the machines, we found that to even launch the application (devenv.exe), required the student to enter the administrator password (the usual UAC prompt). Of course, we could just turn off UAC, but that would defeat the purpose of having it in Windows 7. On the other hand, we cannot really give the students local administrator privilege, as we are concerned that they will do some malicious stuff on the computers. Previously when we used Windows XP Professional running Visual Studio 2005, we had no problems. Kindly advise if there's any workaround for this. EDIT: Thanks for the answer guys. Mayank, your links may work for Visual Studio .Net, but it doesn't seem to work for Visual Studio 2010. Ryan, Tieson, I'm intrigued that you guys managed to get it working easily. FYI I don't manage the Group Policies, but I can get them changed if necessary. Any particular GP that I should be looking at? Suggestions to how to troubleshoot further why UAC is being invoked? At least now I know for sure that this is not supposed to be the default behaviour for Visual Studio 2010 so I'm going to keep digging for a solution. Will try running Procmon and see if i can find something..

• Excel data representation: show me all people who did not pass the exam

  Background I have an excel spreadsheet with the results of a pass/no-pass exam. In the above example it would just show me [email protected] ;; no-pass ;; with all the dates that delta took the exam. I know excel is not a database nor a reporting tool per-se, but it would be great if I could get it to do this.

• How to learn how to program?

  I would like to know the best methods for learning to program. I've been directed towards the Python language because I was told it is good for beginners. I ultimately want to make games for OS X/iPhone. My problem is that I understand what I read but I can't apply my knowledge to anything. I am a programming noob. Should I stick with Python? (is there a better language I should be learning?) Where can I learn programming theory? I get very hyper when reading my book sometimes, any tips on staying calm and focusing? What are effective ways to learn how to program? Are there standard exercises for programming? (I feel solving problems helps my understanding immensely) Ultimately I feel like I am in a never ending tunnel that leads me no where. It feels like I am just completely unable to pursue anything in the world of programming, yet it is something I want to do very much. Thanks.

  I'm trying to extract unique properties from a knockout.js observableArray of objects, to populate a drop menu. Being new to knockout, I'm really struggling with this! I want to iterate over a contacts list, and populate a drop menu with a unique value from each person object within the observableArray. • Rewrite a URL that's already been redirected?

  Hi guys, I'm running an Apache2 web server with a dynamic IP address. I bought exampledomain.net, and I use no-ip.com's domain-update service to redirect any visitors to my current ip address (endnote #1). For example, someone visits exampledomain.net and they get redirected to 73.181.57.34. It works like a charm. However, it isn't all that user-friendly. Can I rewrite the redirected, ip-address URL? I tried these rewrite rules in the root folder's .htaccess... RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^73\.181\.57\.34:88 RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.exampledomain.net/$1 [L,NC] # I simplified the RewriteCond. I would use regex in a real situation. Of course, this creates an infinite loop. The user visits www.exampledomain.net. They're redirected to 73.181.57.34:88 by no-ip. Apache redirects them to www.exampledomain.net which redirects them back to 73.181.57.34:88... so on and so forth. I'm a noob when it comes to rewriting, but is there a way to rewrite a URL without redirecting? I tried these rewrite rules too (a shot in the dark)... • How to Send Headers Through PHP Proxy?

  Okay, so I have an issue with an AJAX request. I currently have this URL: http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&safe=off&gbv=2&tbs=isch%3A1&sa=1&q=cars+imagesize%3A500x500&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&start=0 I then pass it to my proxy script by modifying the string to this: proxy.php?url=http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&safe=off&gbv=2&tbs=isch%3A1&sa=1&q=cars+imagesize%3A500x500&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&start=0 I need to use the PHP proxy script to grab that page's HTML so that I can then parse through it with javascript. However, the problem is that the headers in that URL are also being sent to the proxy script, and as a result, I get a 'malformed or illegal request' error. I'm pretty sure the two different sets of headers are the problem, because if I just replace the original URL string with 'http://wwww.google.com', the proxy returns the HTML of the page correctly. So basically, I don't know how to fix this. I'm a complete PHP noob, and I tried escaping the original URL before I appended it to the 'proxy.php?url=', but that doesn't fix anything. Any ideas? • Connecting to unsecured wireless network

  I would like to know what information is public and can be intercepted in a non-open, but unsecured wireless network. Moreover, is there anything I can do to make it more "secure", other than using https connection whenever possible. In more details, I recently discovered (with surprise) that the wireless network in my school is actually unsecured. Although not everyone can connect to it (you need a student ID), I am told that certain softwares like Wireshark would be able to intercept the data. Since I have been using the network for all private purposes (email, facebook etc), I do feel quite insecure now and would like to understand the situation a bit better. I installed Wireshark and tried to play with it but all I can see are something alien to me. In any case, all I see seems to come directly/indirectly from my IP address, and I have long thought that usually different computers in the same wireless network would be assigned different addresses. Am I wrong? If not, then I feel very confused about what information is actually being captured (potentially by other users in the network, since I don't think I could capture activities of others in the same network anyway), and whether it's safe to use the network at all. (Gambling on others in the same network showing good behaviour is apparently not an option.) Thank you.

• Weird camera Intent behavior

  Hi all. I'm invoking the MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE intent with the MediaStore.EXTRA_OUTPUT extra so that it does save the image to that file. On the onActivityResult I can check that the image is being saved in the intended file, which is correct. The weird thing is that anyhow, the image is also saved in a file named something like "/sdcard/Pictures/Camera/1298041488657.jpg" (epoch time in which the image was taken). I've checked the Camera app source (froyo-release branch) and I'm almost sure that the code path is correct and wouldn't have to save the image, but I'm a noob and I'm not completly sure. So, I'm receiving the correct data, but it's also being saved in the "storeImage(data, loc);" method call, which should not be called... It'd not be a problem if I could get the newly created filename from the intent result data, but I can't. When I found this out, I found about 20 image files from my tests that I didn't know were on my sdcard :) I'm getting this behavior both with my Nexus One with Froyo and my Huawei U8110 with Eclair. • Drupal WebForm with CCK content types. For anonymous users.

  I am probably asking a noob question... however: I have a Drupal site that the customer has a web form where anonymous users can fill in to order some posters (there is 3 to choose from). These are free and at the moment they user just states in the body of a textarea what posters they want. The site owner wants to now add more posters and now wants the ability to have each poster listed in the web form with a field for quantity next to them. When the web for is submitted it will post the node title and quantity to the web form along with the required information. I have researched using UC but it's too much of a eCom solution for such a simple requirement. I also looked at SimpleCart, Flag and Session favorites, all of which aren't really what I need. So I am looking for a simple way to itterate over all the "Poster" content types, and display them on the webform page with a quantity numerical field to be submitted with the web form for each poster. Currently I have: CCK Poster Title Image WebForm OrderPoster Name Email Address Details What I am looking for is a page that does the following: WebForm OrderPosters: Poster 1 [form qty text input for poster 1] Poster 2 [form qty text input for poster 2] Poster 3 [form qty text input for poster 3] ... Poster n [form qty text input for posters n] Name Email Address Details I'd imagine there is a simple way to do this, but I can't seem to find articles of customizing "WebForm" forms. Any help would be much appreciated.

• scanf segfaults and various other anomalies inside while loop

  while(1){ //Command prompt char *command; printf("%s>",current_working_directory); scanf("%s",command);<--seg faults after input has been received. printf("\ncommand:%s\n",command); } I am getting a few different errors and they don't really seem reproducible(except for the segfault at this point .<). This code worked fine about 10 minutes ago, then it infinite looped the printf command and now it seg faults on the line mentioned above. The only thing I changed was scanf("%s",command); to what it currently is. If I change the command variable to be an array it works, obviously this is because the storage is set aside for it. 1) I got prosecuted about telling someone that they needed to malloc a pointer* (But that usually seems to solve the problem such as making it an array) 2) the command I am entering is "magic" 5 characters so there shouldn't be any crazy stack overflow. 3) I am running on mac OSX 10.6 with newest version of xCode(non-OS4) and standard gcc 4) this is how I compile the program: gcc --std=c99 -W sfs.c Just trying to figure out what is going on. Being this is for a school project I am never going to have to see again, I will just code some noob work around that would make my boss cry :) But for afterwards I would love to figure out why this is happening and not just make some fix for it, and if there is some fix for it why that fix works.

• Regular expression to match HTML table row ( <tr> ) NOT containing a specific value

  I'm using Notepad++ to clean up a long and messy HTML table. I'm trying to use regular expressions even if I'm a total noob. :) I need to remove all the table rows that doesn't contain a specific value (may I call that substring?). After having all the file contents unwrapped, I've been able to use the following regular expression to select, one by one, every table row with all its contents: <tr>.+?</tr> How can I improve the regular expression in order to select and replace only table rows containing, somewhere inside a part of them, that defined substring? I don't know if this does matter but the structure of every table row is the following (I've put there every HTML tag, the dots stand for standard content/values) <tr> <td> ... </td> <td> ... </td> <td> <a sfref="..." href="...">!! • Using an ORM with a database that has no defined relationships?

  Consider a database(MSSQL 2005) that consists of 100+ tables which have primary keys defined to a certain degree. There are 'relationships' between tables, however these are not enforced with foreign key constraints. Consider the following simplified example of typical types of tables I am dealing with. The are clear relations between the User and City and Province tables. However, they key issues is the inconsistent data types in the tables and naming conventions. User: UserRowId [int] PK Name [varchar(50)] CityId [smallint] ProvinceRowId [bigint] City: CityRowId [bigint] PK CityDescription [varchar(100)] Province: ProvinceId [int] PK ProvinceDesc [varchar(50)] I am considering a rewrite of the application (in ASP.net MVC) that uses this data source as is similar in design to MVC storefront. However I am going through a proof of concept phase and this is one of the stumbling blocks I have come across. What are my options in terms of ORM choice that can be easily used and why? Should I even be considering an ORM? (The reason I ask this is that most explanations and tutorials all work with relatively cleanly designed existing databases, or newly created ones when compared to mine. I am thus having a very hard time trying to find a way forward with this problem) There is a huge amount of existing SQL queries, would a datamappper(eg IBatis.net) be more suitable since we could easily modify them to work and reuse the investment already made? I have found this question on SO which indicates to me that an ORM can be used - however I get the impression that this a question of mapping? Note: at the moment, the object model is not clearly defined as it was non-existent. The existing system pretty much did almost everything in SQL or consisted of overly complicated, and numerous queries to complete fucntionality. I am pretty much a noob and have zero experience around ORMs and MVC - so this an awesome learning curve I am on.

  Hi all, I'm developing a native iPhone app using Phonegap, so everything is done in HTML and JS. I am using the Flurry SDK for analytics and want to use the [FlurryAPI logEvent:@"EVENT_NAME"]; method to track events. Is there a way to do this in Javascript? • How to create a static IP on Windows Server 2008 R2 so I can access the server remotely

  I have just purchased a HP Proliant N40L which I am intending to use as a NAS, learning tool and just in general something to mess around with. As a student via the Microsoft dreamspark program I can get a free copy of Windows Server 2008 R2 which I am using as the OS. So that I can remote to the box from outside of my local network and so that I can stream media from it to my PS3, I have read that I need to create a static IP for the server and use port forwarding to forward to this IP so I can remote in. Is this correct? I am not really sure how to do this and if I need to make these changes on my router configuration, on the OS or both. I am a novice when it comes to networking however most resources for Windows server 2008 R2 seem to assume a fair amount of experience already. I realise that using this particular OS may seem like overkill for what I currently wish to do with it (stream content to other devices and backup) but as I can get a copy for free it seems sensible. Edit: From reading answers posted I feel I should give more information. I have now tried to add a static IP address using my router configuration settings. I have used the getmac command to get the mac address of the server. My ISP is Virgin Media and I have gone to the LAN IP section and I have added an IP address to the DHCP Reservation Lease Info. I can now use remote desktop connection internally to remote to the server (so I am assuming assigning this IP has worked). How do I configure this on the OS as well? I am also unsure on how I would remote to this machine outside of my local network?

• Steps to deploy a custom routing protocol

  I'm a Ph.D Student and I'm researching a Service Centric Networking architecture with resourceallocation on a large scale. What I'm looking to do is expand an existing routing protocol like OSPF with extra fields and some new message types that I need for communication between Nodes. I want to manipulate the cost of a network link and I want paths to be calculated like in OSPF V2/v3, but using the cost that my algorithms have calculated. What I have I have the source code of OSPF from Quagga. I am assuming I can edit this code how I want, including packet structures and creating new types. Yes, I am aware it won't be easy but this is a 6 years research project and I am eager to develop something new, to move forward. What I need I would like to know how I can deploy the edited OSPF source files I have (written in C) on any type of server. I have a large testbed environment available with hundreds of virtual nodes and pretty much any OS out there. So if I want to test my extended protocol, how do I make all the nodes in a network use this to communicate? I do not understand what parts of the kernel I need to edit here. I tried searching for days now and I am unable to find how to deploy a non-existing routing protocol, without the use of an application-level framework. If somebody could push me in the right direction that'd be awesome. note: I need this to be a routingprotocol and not an application, since I want this to work on op of the network layer for performance reasons. • ASP Force Download

  In PHP I can do: header("Content-type: application/octet-stream") and then anything that I output is downloaded instead of showing in the browser. Is there a similar way to do this in ASP? I have seen about all the file streaming and such using ADODB.Stream, but that doesn't seem to work for me and always requires another file to load the content from. Bit of an ASP noob, so go easy on me. :p All I want to do is have a script that outputs a CSV and that will force download instead of showing in the browser. • iPhone toolbar shared by multiple views

  Another iPhone noob question. The app I'm building needs to show a shared custom UIToolbar for multiple views (and their subviews) within a UITabBarController framework. The contents of the custom toolbar are the same across all the views. I'd like to be able to design the custom toolbar as a xib and handle UI events from its own controller class (I'm assuming I can subclass UIToolbar to do so?). That way I could define IBOutlet & IBAction items, etc. Then I could associate this custom toolbar with eachs of the UITabBarController views (and their subviews). But I'm having trouble finding out whether that's possible - and if so, how to do it. In particular, I want to be able to push new views onto UINavigationControllers that are each associated with parent UITabBarController tabs. So, to summarize, I want a: custom toolbar shared by multiple views which are managed by multiple navigation controllers and the navigation controllers are associated with different tabs of a parent tab bar controller The tab bar controller itself is launched modally, though I don't believe that's relevant. Anyway, the tab bar controller is working, as are its child navigation controllers. I'm just having a little trouble figuring out how to persist the shared toolbar to the various subviews. I'd settle for a good clean way of implementing programmatically... though I'd prefer the flexibility of keeping the toolbar's visual design in a xib. Anyone have any suggestions?

  Hi, I have a project that i need to compile number of cities in each state and make an insert statement for mysql database. I think the easiest way to do it is via python but since i m a complete noob i would like to reach out all the python gurus here. Here is what the input looks like. Example below is for Florida. cities = ['Boca Raton', 'Boynton Beach', 'Bradenton', 'Cape Coral', 'Deltona'] and this what the output should be. INSERT INTO `oc_locations` (`idLocation`, `name`, `idLocationParent`, `friendlyName`) VALUES (1, 'Florida', 0, 'Florida'), (2, 'Boca Raton', 1, 'Boca Raton'), (3, 'Boynton Beach', 1, 'Boynton Beach'), (4, 'Bradenton', 1, 'Bradenton'), (5, 'Cape Coral', 1, 'Cape Coral'), (6, 'Deltona', 1, 'Deltona'), If you look at carefully the "idLocationParent" for "Florida" value is "0" so which means it is a top level value. This will be done for 50 states so ability to plug the state name into the mysql statement would be icing on the cake if there is a easy way to do it. Also alphabetical order and auto increment for the idLocation would be great.
