• Best way to connect a desktop computer to a 3g network

  A friend of mine is moving to a building with no Internet connectivity. Ethernet and wifi are out of the question. What is the best way for him to get his desktop connected? The most obvious solution is for him to get an unlimited 3G data plan. What is the best way for him to set this up? I am assuming he should get something like Verizon's MiFi 3G access point, but does this have an ethernet jack?

• Computer speakers receive radio station signal

  I have a set of Logitech 5.1 speakers where each speaker and the source plug into the subwoofer. I'm using a Griffin Firewave with output from my MacBook Pro, and output from my custom-built desktop with a switch in the middle (built it myself out of an old Belkin A/B parallel switch). Recently, I've noticed that I can hear a local Punjabi radio station being picked up by my speakers, and the volume of this interference increases as I increase the volume of the speakers. I'm fairly sure that this radio station is at the low-end of the FM spectrum, below 90MHz (or it may be at the high end, above 105MHz, my memory isn't infallible). It gets quite annoying as I can't put my audio very loud without the interference. I've tried to put a ferrite core on the input cable just before the 3.5mm jacks plug into the subwoofer. I don't know if putting the same core around all three of the cables (green, black, orange) would negate the effects, but I'm assuming not. There has been no change. Is there any reason why this would be happening? I'm assuming the interference is coming somewhere between the FireWave and the subwoofer, because the noise gets amplified with volume increases. If anybody has any suggestions, I'd be grateful!

  I'm building a computer mainly for gaming and developing games. It's going to be a three screen system with two GeForce GTX 460's and a quad-core i7. The newegg wattage calculator says I need around 900W. The case I intend to get is this one. Full specs if you need 'em are at the end of this post. I have no intentions to overclock the system at the moment, but this may change in the future. I've done a lot of research on the subject, and the answers I've found indicate that it takes a heck of a lot of power to require liquid cooling, and most non-overclocked systems don't need it. But I haven't seen a question about a system with two GPU's, so I ask you the following two questions: Assuming that the system is used for gaming for very extended periods of time (say 4-6 hours at a time, nonstop) with all three screens running at full 1080p, would the fans installed in the system suffice? Or would I need more fans and/or liquid cooling? If the system is used under the same circumstances as above, and is overclocked to a reasonable level, would the fans installed in the system suffice?   Can I use secedit.exe to export out the "Security Options" from the local security policy and then import them on another machine? I'm trying to do this on Windows Server 2008. Update I just tried with: secedit /export /db C:\andy.db /cfg C:\andy.inf /areas SECURITYPOLICY /log C:\andy.log But it didn't work with error: Warning 2: The system cannot find the file specified. Error opening C:\andy.db. Where do I get the DB file from?

• Why does my computer crash randomly?

  The other day I went out to my van to get my Tower and when I opened the trunk it fell out. I brought it into the house and opened it, and everything looked ok. When I started it up, about 1-3 minutes afterwards it would crash. It did this over and over until I reseated the cooler. Everything seemed normal again, until after about 10 minutes of gameplay (any game), it would crash. I reseated my GPU + reinstalled the drivers, however I still get the same error. A while back, I'd check my 'Windows Rating' periodically, and all of them were in the '6.0-6.9' range except for my hard disk usage (always been like that [not relative]). Today I went in and looked, and my Processor and Memory was rated 5.4. I reseated my cpu and my memory, refreshed the windows rating, and then my processor and memory went from 5.4, to 5.1. A few minutes ago I reseated them once again, and now it's back to 5.4. Note: Not sure if this is relevant to the issue, but I updated my bios earlier today I honestly have no idea what the issue is, but I'm getting aggravated at the problem. • A Domain Admin user doesn't have effective Administrative rights on a Domain Computer

  I am a developer who is setting up a virtual domain environment of testing purposes and am having trouble with the setup. I have created a new DC on a new Forest... call it dev.contoso.com. I have setup a virtual internal network for all machines that are going to be apart of this virtual test environment and have given each machine a static IP address in the 192.169.150.0 subnet. I have added machine1.dev.contoso.com to the domain dev.contoso.com. I have also provisioned a user account (adminuser) in the domain and made that user a member of Domain Admins group. Upon logging into machine1 using my newly created Domain Admin account, I cannot access/run any files on machine1. When I go into the advanced permissions for the c:\ folder and goto properties - Security Tab - Advanced - Effective Permissions and search for the dev\adminuser (mentioned above), I get an error saying: Windows can't calculate the effective permissions for admin user What do I need to do to get Administrative rights on Machine1? I am using Server 2008 R2 for both the AD controller and machine1.

I am able to connect to the internet just fine with the device itself (ie can browse the web). • Windows 7: Computer does not enter automatic standby

  My Windows 7 PC is set to automatically enter standby ("sleep mode") after 30 minutes. For some reason it stopped working a few days ago (it keeps on running). Is there some systematic way to determine what is preventing the system from automatically entering sleep mode after the designated idle time? Manually sending the machine to sleep works fine. The monitor also enters power save mode automatically, so the "idling detection" of Windows seems to work fine.

• New Computer freezing up at random

  Since I built my system about 4 weeks ago I'v been getting random freezes, Sometimes it can happen directly after startup and sometimes it wont freeze up for 3-4 days of 24/7 running. It seems to be happening under all stress loads but mainly when the CPU is under 10% load. It doesn't give me a BSOD or anything, it simply just freezes and repeats the last sound before the freeze until I shut it down by the power button. I'v re-seated everything in the system except the CPU, Cleaned the RAM sockets and gold fittings. None of the components have been clocked above their factory settings as of yet, don't want to overclock them until I sort out these freezes. Temps are all well under the rated max temps, the highest the temps have been are below CPU: Low load: 16-21°C Full Load (100%) 40-43°C *(From HWMonitor by CPUID) GPU 1: Low Load: 25-30°C Full Load (100%): 45-50°C GPU 2: Low Load: 23-27°C Full Load (100%): 45-50°C *(GPU Temps from Catalyst Control Center) General Case temps Rear: 18-20°C Mid: 20-21°C Front (HDD/SSD Bays): 14-19°C (Case temps may be a little off as it's from the Kaze master pro fan controller) I have Un-installed EVERY driver for Motherboard, GPU & Soundcard and Re-installed twice. Windows is all up to date. To date i'v tried the following Running Memtest for 24 hrs straight, No errors Running Memtest on each individual RAM modules, No errors Reseated everything except the CPU Cleaned DIMM Sockets and Gold inputs Tested the Graphics cards 1 at a time Re-arranged all the SATA devices to run on Chipset controlled ports Re-installing all drivers OS: Win7 Professional 64bit Motherboard: ASRock X79 Extreme9 CPU: i7 3930k 3.2GHz GPU: Sapphire 7950 OC Edition V2 (2 card Crossfire) RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws Z F3-17000CL11Q-16GBZL 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 Boot Drive: OCZ Agility 4 128GB Data Drive 1: Western Digital Black 2TB Data Drive 2: Western Digital Black 2TB Data Drive 3: Western Digital Green 3TB Power Supply: Corsair AX1200 Gold

• Can't access internet using a domain joined computer outside the domain environment

  We had an unused box at work so took it home. It had been joined to the domain and hasn't been unjoined. When I try to use it at home (logging in with a local admin account) I can't seem to access internet pages. It gets correct IP and gateway for the local network and correct DNS servers for the home ADSL connection. I can happily ping the home router (which doesn't have any tricky firewall settings). Can't seem to ping outside, get any DNS to resolve, or (obviously) get any web pages. Is there some problem here with this having been joined to the domain?

• How to plug power/reset buttons from case to motherboard leads?

  I have a motherboard I salvaged from a pre-assembled computer. Except now I'm trying to use it in my own custom build. The problem is, this motherboard doesn't have any documentation because it was never meant to be used by consumers (as far as I know). I need to plug in my case's power/reset/hdd-light plugs into the motherboard. I usually check the documentation of the board to see which leads go to what connector, but I have no documentation for the board. So, as I see it, I have two options: I find the documentation (I've emailed gateway customer service, but I'm unsure of how successful I'll be with that). I simply test the leads one after the other (can this cause damage if plugged into the wrong leads?) However, there might even be a standard for which leads do what action (I'm not sure about this). For reference, my motherboard's SN/MD (?) is: H57M01G1-1.1-8EKS3H Does anyone have any idea if I can find documentation or find another way to be sure if my connections are correct?

• Computer loses all installed programs and appears to return OS-only state

  This is a story regarding 3 laptops of different brand and models. On separate occassions, I configured each of these Windows 7 / Vista computers with the necessary configuration and applications (which are supposedly the same actually), e.g. join office domain, same windows updates, microft office etc. These machinese were configure in our office in Singapore, and then they were taken to India for use. Someday in India, when booting up the laptop, all went fine except when it reach the log in screen, it was no longer possible to login with domain credentials. Logging into the laptop local admin account will lead to discover that the machine has returned to "OS-only state". All the configurations and applications were gone. The actual user profiles are still in the C: drive so files can still be retrieved, but under Control Panel Uninstall Programs it is evident that at least the registry is corrupted. The above scenario happen to the first 2 laptops. For the third, the system reports "Operating System Not Found" on boot up. I cannot think of any reason except to suspect a power fluctuation issue. Question is, will a power issue create this behaviour? What else can cause this issue?

• Routing internet through ethernet to a computer without a Wireless adapter

  I'm setting up a small home network. I have a laptop which connects to internet wirelessly- that works fine. I have a desktop connected to this laptop by an ethernet cable which I'd like to access the internet with. In the past, I have used a different laptop to do this and had no problems doing so. Both computers run Windows 7. I have tried setting up a homegroup and disabling Windows firewall, as well as restarting both computers. I can share data but my internet connection can not be accessed through the desktop. (I understand USB network adapters are cheap, I have one on the way but that doesn't solve this issue.) • Login to OS X Server User Account from Local Computer

  I have OS X Server installed on a mac mini. I've created several User accounts, one of which is Account Name: Bob Password: abc123 From the Mac Mini's login screen I can choose "Server" (main account) "Bob" (Bobs account) and "Other..." OS X Server Accounts, from "Other..." if I input Bobs credentials it will log me in. I also have a macbook air, I would like to be able to select from the Login Screen "Other..." input Bobs credentials and have it login to Bobs account, or any other User Account for that matter. My Server is setup as private with the server address: server.network.private Following some googled instructions as well as apples very own instructions I have: Setup an Open Directory with Username: diradmin Password: abc123 Then on the macbook air gone into System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Options and clicked Join next to Network Account Server, input my server (server.network.private) with diradmin credentials and its connected. Great. I've also ticked Allow Network Users to Login and Login Window and selected All Users. I was assuming this would allow my macbook air to login to the "Bob" account by selecting "Other..." from the login window although there is no "Other..." option. I then setup a VPN, basic credentials, logged into it on the macbook air and still not much has changed. I am able to share screens with the "Bob" account form my macbook air by logging in by clicking Share Screen... from the Finder under Shared > Network Server and then clicking Login In but this obviously requires the macbook air to already be logged into an account before it can share screens which is not suitable. Is there any way to simply login to the OS X Server User Account from the macbook air's login screen via the "Other..." like it does on the mac mini's login screen? Thanks in advance. • Computer can't boot

  I have a 1 year old PC and the last weeks, when I press the ON button the PC doesn't power on ( Like I didn't press the ON button ). I have to plug and unplug a few times the power cord in order to make it work. At the start this happened once in 10 boots. Now it happens much more frequently to the point that when I press the power on button it never even opens if I don't do the cord switch thingy. Very rarely also, the PC shut downs for no reason and no warning, even when idle. The important fact to note here is, the green light on the motherboard is always on, even when the PC doesn't power on. What should I do? Is it a Power Supply failure or a motherboard? My power supply is a high end corsair model, AX850 and my motherboard a high end ASUS.

  Looking for a software to help my friend learn to sing. Can't seem to find anything on googles. Does there exist software (preferably downloadable and from this century!) that records one's voice and then analyzes it to see how "accurate" it was. It would be great if it also had some kind of "lessons" of some sort, and not simply sound recorder that shows waveforms.   Hi all, Pulling my hair out here. I recently replaced my D: 1TB drive (not a system drive) with a new 1.5TB drive. I loaded Windows XP, formatted the new drive and it was showing as working fine, alongside my C: windows system drive. I restart my machine and all of a sudden, Windows doesn't load and instead I get: "Windows could not start beause the following file is missing or corrupt" \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM I don't have the original XP installation CD, although I do have another copy of XP, when I try and boot to it, I get the blue 'STOP' screen after it attempts to load the setup utlity for about a minute. Can someone please help? When I set up my new hard drive as a primary partition did this someone screw up my C: hard drive? Did it perhaps unmount it somehow? Any help would be fantastic. Thanks

• When gaming computer freezes with a blank screen and a buzzing sound

  I have a problem with random freezes when playing games. Sometimes it's fine for hours, other times it dosn't last even one. I tried googling around and I found recomendations to update my graphics drivers and to test for overheating. The graphics drivers haven't helped worked and Furmark created a consistant heat higher than I get during a crash. I even tried running a game using the Linux dual boot and WINE, that crashed too. Here are the tempreture logs leading up to the latest crash. The GPU dosn't hit 80, and I've hit 90 with no crash on firmark.
