  • Is it possible to update from Windows 8 Enterprise to version 8.1 without having to reinstall the OS?

    Today we are told that the 8.1 update, (a version which allows you to keep apps, settings, and files), is officially being rolled out worldwide. No longer will you have to do a clean OS install, to go from 8 to 8.1. But I don't see the update inside my (Enterprise's) desktop 'Windows Update' program, and furthermore, Microsoft themselves say: If you’re running [Enterprise], you can't install the free update to Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 from the Store. However they DO also say: If you installed Windows 8 using an MSDN ISO, you might be able to install Windows 8.1 using a similar ISO from MSDN But it does not specify whether this method allows seamless apps and settings-retaining upgrading or not. Is there a method for doing it (whether official or unofficial - perhaps confirmed via experience of updating with some sort of Enterprise 8.1 ISO), or is an update indeed expected for the Enterprise version via the desktop 'Windows Update' program? A further observation which may help: the page I cite refers to the 'Windows Store', which is the 'Modern UI' app store and NOT the desktop 'Windows Update' program which typically updates desktop Office and desktop Windows alike.

I sent it to my phone via Bluetooth, but when I try to open the wgt file on my phone it says it can't open it, because it doesn't know the filetype.     Hi, All I'm using English version of Vista and having problems with using programs that display Russian characters somewhere. For example dictionaries doesn't work for me, since they display Russian character. Also I see just "magic" characters in text editor (notepad) when open a Russian text file. I tried to change whole Vista Interface language to Russian, but it still didn't solve the problem. I CAN read any web page from browser, that's not a problem. Also adding "Russian" in "Text Services and Input Languages" doesn't solve this problem. Does anyone know how to solve this? Thanks. My System: 32-bit Windows Vista Home Premium - SP2

    I have some applications that I open from time to time, and I always get this UAC message with Do you want to allow the following program from an unknown publisher to make changes to this computer? Is there a way I can mark a single program so that won't ask me that again? Like, I think it is good that it asks me the first time, but some programs I do launch more often, and I am ok with them making changes and don't want to be asked all the time.

  • INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE on Windows 8.1 Bootcamp

    I'm on my MacBook Pro and I want to use my Bootcamp partition to work on one screen. I've installed Parallels 9 and after I installed it and configured it to look at my Windows partition through the Bootcamp Wizard it gives me an "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" error when I try and boot. I figured it must be an issue with parallels so I've rebooted and now I'm getting it when I try to boot into Windows 8.1. Any ideas? Thanks

  • Best choice for a personal "online backup" in Europe

    I'm looking for an online backup solution for personal use - besides all the usual requirements (like not too expensive, since it's for personal use), I'd like to add two requirements to it: data center should be in Europe (I don't want my personal data stored in the US, when the next crazed president comes along and wants to confiscate and rifle through everybody's files.....) the online backup store should be accessible through a drive letter in cmd.exe So far, I've looked at a few services, but none have totally convinced me: Dropbox is looking ok, but they insist on creating a silly "My Dropbox" directory in my data path - and there's no way I can choose that name. Sorry - "My everything" is for dummies - I don't like that, I like to name my files and folders according to my liking LiveDrive is OK, too - they offer European storage, drive letter and all - but those drive letters are only available in the Windows Explorer - and not on the cmd.exe command line :-( and since I do 99% of my work on the command line, this is a major drawback..... Any other services I haven't looked at worth checking out? Marc

    I'm using Iceweasel (un/rebranded Firefox) 3.5.9 on Debian (amd64). I want to use the "Furigana Injector" plugin. I installed it via the Tools - Add-ons menuitem (version 1.3), and restarted Firefox. Unfortunately, when I click the button, it only says: "The 'SimpleMecab' XPCOM component could not be loaded." in a dialog box, several dozen times (!). I found a Debian package "libmecab1", but installing it didn't help. Is there some "mecab" package I can install that will make this work?

  • 256 Colors in Terminal over SSH on OSX 10.6

    I am using either Windows 7 or Ubuntu 12.04 and trying to SSH into OSX 10.6. Using Vim color schemes, I can emulate the colors on xterm-256 color on Linux and gVim on Windows. However, I would like the colors to follow through when I am SSHing onto the OSX. The default terminal, however, does not support xterm-256color. Is there a way to have OSX use iterm2 by default, to accept all SSH requests instead of terminal.app? If not, is there a way to install xterm-256color into the default terminal? Upgrading to Lion is out of the question at this point. Thank you!

    I have a FAT32 partition on my HDD. When using OSX, it is mounted to /Volumes/MEDIA.     I'm trying to copy all files and folders from one directory to another, but exclude certain files. Specifically, I want to exclude subversion files and folders. However, I'd like a general yet concise solution. I imagine I'll find the need to exclude several types of files in the near future. For example, I might want to exclude .svn, *.bak, and *.prj. Here is what I've put together so for, but it is not working for me. The first part, find works, but I'm doing something wrong with xargs and cp. I tried cp with and without the -R. Also, I'm using OS X and it appears to have a less featured version of xargs than linux systems. find ./sourcedirectory -not \( -name .svn -a -prune \) | xargs -IFILES cp -R FILES ./destinationdirectory

    I'm new with Rundeck and completely amazed with it and I'm trying to execute a job and my scenario is detailed below: Rundeck is configured with ssh passwordless authentication for user master between node Server (rundeck server) and node Target (remote Solaris host) for user "master" In node Target I want to execute a script /app/acme/stopApp.sh with a user appmanager Normally and manually, when I need to run script above I proceed with ssh master@server sudo su - appmanager or simply ssh -t master@server 'sudo su - appmanager' works without password and finally run (as appmanager) /app/acme/stopApp.sh But I'm not sure how can I reproduce these steps using Rundeck. I read in some previous messages that for each job line rundeck use a new ssh connection, so the workflow below always fails for me with the messages: sudo: no tty present and no askpass program specified Remote command failed with exit status 1 Please someone could help me with some information to solve this issue. Without this functionality I wouldn't be able to introduce a little DevOps in my department. I read the user guide and admin guide but I couldn't find an easy example, neither in this forum, to follow.

  • MacBook Pro - 7200 vs 5400 rpm drives - Heat and Noise

    I am looking at a new 15" MacBook Pro for development purposes. I am planning to run a Virtual Machine for about 50% of my work (Windows 7 x64, IIS, SQL Server, and VS 2010). The upgrade from a 5400 rpm drive to a 7200 rpm is only $45. From what I understand the faster rotational speed of the 7200 rpm drive will help virtual machine performance. However, I am concerned that additional heat and fan noise might be an issue. I will be running mostly on A/C power so decreased battery life is not a major concern for me. Since I would be running with a Core i7 processor which gives off a fair amount of heat already I was wondering if it might be best to stay at 5400 rpm for the hard drive. What do you all think? Some times it won't respond, and some other times it adds characters indefinitely to the typing area. When i click on desktop it creates new folders. When press ctrl+N on a browser windows it opens unlimited number of windows. I tried with Kaspersky and Eset antivirus trial versions but couldn't find any virus. I don't get this behaviour always.. but 50% of times... Thanks....

  • Outlook Calendar Error "The attachment size exceeds the allowable limit", even when there is no attachment

    I have an outlook meeting series that occurs weekly. Every week, I open the current occurrence, attach the current week’s meeting materials and send an update to the invites. I have done this for the same meeting series for several years. Recently, I started to run into a problem where every time I try to update or cancel a meeting occurrence I received the error “the attachment size exceeds the allowable limit” regardless of whether or not I have an attachment. I am not even able to cancel the series in order to start fresh.   • ImgBurn fails to burn data CD-R disk due to "Layouts do not match" error

    I have a reoccurring problem with the program ImgBurn. Whenever I try and burn anything to a CD-R using ImgBurn it burns just fine, except for when I go and verify the disk. It tells me that the "Layouts do not match". Windows 7 shows the disk as completely blank. Although, I see on the bottom of the disk it has been written to. I can burn ISO files to DVD-R's just fine. This only seems to happen with CD-R's. The CD-R's I'm using are Memorex Cool Colors 52x CD-R's. I have looked on Google, and it seems like I'm not the only one this happens to. Unfortunately, no one is able to provide an explanation. I have included the log file from the last CD I just burnt.     I can't get USB tethering to work. My setup: iMac with Mac OS 10.6.2 iPhone 3G, Sofware version 3.1.2 (Build 7D11) The phone shows up in iTunes and syncing works as it should. I went to System Preferences / Network and added the iPhone as a Network Service. To the right there is a status message for the selected service. With the iPhone not plugged in, the status message reads: Either the cable for iPhone is not plugged in or the device is not responding. With the iPhone plugged in, the status message reads: Either the cable for iPhone USB is not plugged in or the device is not responding. Almost identical messages, the only difference is "USB". Any clues?

  • How to start networking on a wired interface before logon in Ubuntu Desktop Edition

    Problem Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition (and possibly previous versions as well, I haven't tested them) has no network connections after boot until at least 1 user logs in. This means any services that require networking (e.g. openssh-server) are not available until someone logs in locally either via gdm, kdm, or a TTY. Background Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition uses the NetworkManager service to take commands from the nm-applet in Gnome (or it's equivalent in KDE). As I understand it, while NetworkManager is running at boot, it is not issued any commands to connect until you login for the first time because nm-applet isn't running until you login and your Gnome session starts (or similar for KDE). I'm not sure what prompts NetworkManager to connect to the network when you login via a TTY. There are several relevant variables involved in starting up the network connections including: Wired vs Wireless (and the resulting drivers, SSID, passwords, and priorities) Static vs DHCP Multiple interfaces Constraints Support Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala (bonus points for additional supported versions) Support wired eth0 interface Receive an IP address via DHCP Receive DNS information via DHCP (obviously the DHCP server must provide this information) Enable networking at the proper time (e.g. some time after file systems are loaded but before network services like ssh start) Switching distros or versions (e.g. to Server Edition) is not an acceptable solution Switching to a Static IP configuration is not an acceptable solution Question How to start networking on a wired interface before logon in Ubuntu Desktop Edition? What I have tried Per this guide, adding the following entry into /etc/network/interfaces so that NetworkManager won't manage the eth0 interface: auth eth0 iface inet dhcp After reboot eth0 is down. Issuing ifconfig eth0 up brings the interface up but it receives no IP address. Issuing dhclient eth0 instead Does bring up the interface and it Does receive an IP address. Completely removing the NetworkManager package in addition to the settings above. I'm a bit confused with the whole UpStart/SysVinit mangling that's going in Ubuntu currently (I'm more familiar with the CentOS world). However, directly issuing sudo /etc/init.d/networking start Or sudo start networking does not bring up the eth0 interface at all, much less get an IP address. I have download the source of CKEditor and placed it in the same folder as my TiddlyWiki and then I try to import it but nothing happens. I tried to follow the steps here but it doesn't work out Also when trying to import plugins from TiddlyTools I get a whole load of plugins almost 100 of them making it very difficult to install where am I going wrong here?
