• PHP site scheduling Java execution?

  I'm trying to get started on combining my (slightly limited) PHP experience with my (better) Java experience, in a project where I need to allow uploads of Java source files to the server, which the server then executes Javac on to compile it. Then, at a set time (e.g. specified on upload) I need to run that once on the server, which will generate some database info for the PHP site to display. To describe my current programming abilities- I have made many desktop Java programs, and am confident in 'pure' Java, but so far have only undertaken a couple of PHP projects (including using the CodeIgniter framework). My motivation for using PHP as the frontend is because I know it is very fast, lightweight and I will be able to display the results I need very easily with it (simple DB readout). Ideally, the technology used should be able to be developed on a localhost (e.g. WAMP, Tomcat etc..) Is there any advice which you could give on what technology I should consider to use to bridge this gap, and what resources could help in using that technology? I have looked at a few, but have struggled to find documentation helping in achieving what I need.

• Infrastructure for high transactional system (language & hosting suggestion help)

  Some of our friends (University students) are trying to develop a twitter type application, I want to plan for at least 1000 transactions per second (I know it's wishful thinking) for initial launch. This involves several people connecting and getting updates and posting (text + images) to site. In the back end db will server the data and also calculates rankings of what to push to user based on complex algorithm on the fly real-time. Our group is familiar with Java and Tomcat/MySQL. We can also easily learn/code in PHP/MySQL. What is the best suited platform for our purpose ? Though Java seem to be easy to implement for us I am afraid that hosting will be a bit difficult. I could find cloud based php hosting services (like rackspace cloudsites) at reasonable cost. Amazon EC2 is a bit over our heads to manage on day-to-day. Also any recommendation on hosting ? (PHP or Java) We don't have millions in seed money but about $20K to start with. Any advice on above or any thing in general approach is much appreciated.

• Garbled text in Screen [closed]

  The graphical Interface in my system is garbled with some text. At the beginning I thought it was due to java and tomcat that I installed. But after removing java and tomcat, it is still the same. I am using ubuntu server and i have installed xfce desktop environment with oboard softkey I have added my dmesg output to this message. What is the problem here. I am not able to figure it out.   I have to find out in which exact format JCIFS stores the user principal in the "getUserPrincipal()" property. Therefor i created a test Environment like this: Windows Server 2008 Domain Controller Domain named "MYDOMAIN" Many Testusers in Active Directory Tomcat Application Server with my Web Application (which simply reads the user Principal and displays its values). The user should be logged in to the web-application with SSO therefor i need the format that jcifs is using to store the user. (For example user@MYDOMAIN or MYDOMAIN\user...) I tested the Authentication with other SSO frameworks with Kerberos Method and it works as expected. I'm now trying to use SSO through the NTLMHttpFilter of JCIFS. So what i also have to configure is the same policy on the client computer. I have to change the policy, so that the client computer sends NTLMv1. But it is always sending NTLMv2 tokens. The problem now is that i'm somehow not able to change this setting. (I already was before) because the dropdown box to choose the authentication method is "greyed out". edit: just to make this clear, this dialog is on the client-side in the "local-security policies" As you can see from this screenshot, the chosen method is "Only send NTLMv2 responses" which is the wrong setting and i'm pretty sure that this is causing the error above. My question is now, why can't i change this setting? Why is it greyd out?

• Connecting multiple ColdFusion 10 instances to a single Apache 2.2 server

  This is on Windows 7 Home Premium edition. I have got two ColdFusion 10 (updater 2) instances: "cfusion" (the default one), and "scratch". I have got a single instance of Apache 2.2 running. Within Apache, I have set up two virtual hosts, each of which needs to be served by a different ColdFusion instance. Each of the CF instances serves files fine via Tomcat's internal web server. Apache serves vanilla HTML files fine too. So both CF instances, and both virtual hosts separately work OK. I can get wsconfig.exe to connect either one of the CF instances to the Apache server, and serve CF files via Apache & that instance. However I cannot find a way of connecting the second CF instance to Apache as well, so that both CF instances are conected, each serving one of the virtual hosts. WSConfig doesn't seem to understand the notion of "multiple CF instances", and the changes it makes to the httpd.conf (via mod_jk.conf) does not seem to be implemented in such a way as to accommodate multiple CF instances talking to a single Apache instance, or multiple virtual hosts. I freely admit to not being confident enough with how mod_jk (or even really httpd.conf) works to be able to guess if I can change stuff to make it work. If I try to add the second CF instance using WSConfig, I just get a message "the web server is already configured for ColdFusion". Be that as it may... not the instance of ColdFusion I want to connect it to! If I remove the existing connector to whichever instance is already connected, I can then connect the other one no problems. Not that this helps, but it demonstrates that the CF instance can connect to Apache. This all used to be fairly straight fwd under older versions of CF and JRun :-( The only docs I have found are on the "Connect multiple Apache virtual hosts on a web server to a single ColdFusion server" page, but that specifically only deals with a single CF instance. There is no equivalent page for multiple CF instances. I'm kinda hoping I can move some of the mod_jk config into my virtual host entries in httpd-vhosts.conf (this is how it used to work for JRun), but I've no idea what to put where. I think I've covered all the necessary info here? If not, sing out and I'll add more. Thanks. • Suspected network performance issue on VirtualBox Ubuntu guest on Win7 host

  I set up Ubuntu 12.04 in VirtualBox on the Win7 machine I was allocated on my new project. I am running Java, Eclipse, Tomcat to develop a large data-intensive application and I noticed that this application runs at half the speed of my colleague's identical machine, where he runs it all under Windows. I think I have narrowed down the performance issue to the network, after comparing and equalising all the Java VM settings with my colleague. Is there a ping test I can do or some other network diagnostic test to flag up any problems? To give some background, the network performance is confusing. Running a network speed test to my colleague's machine with iperf shows speeds of 6 Mb/s from my Ubuntu guest, and 90 Mb/s from the win7 host. Large downloads, e.g. the Java SDK, come down at about 1.2 MB/s on both the guest and the host. Pings are sub-1ms on the host, but 1.5ms on the guest. I also did a broadband speed test, and got 10Mb/s download speed on both, but the host has an upload speed of 10Mb/s but the guest only uploads at 3Mb/s. I've been trying to diagnose any MTU problems with ping -M do to identify any kind of packet fragmentation problem but it's progressing very slow because I don't have much experience in this area. From what I read on other people's networking issues with VB and Linux guests on Win7 hosts, I should be able to get the speed on the guest up to the same level as the host. I installed a fresh VM with Ubuntu again to see if I'd foobar'd it somehow, but I'm getting the same readings with iperf on the virgin installation. • How do you backup 40+ Centos5.5 servers?

  We are embarrassed to ask this question. Apologies for our lack of UNIX expertise. We have inherited 40+ centos 5.5 servers, and don't know how to back them up. We need low level clone type images so that we could restore the servers from scratch if we had to replace the HDs etc. We have used the "dd" command, but we assume this only works if you want to back up one local disk to another, not 40 servers to one server with an external USB HD attached. All 40 servers have a pair of mirrored disks (dont know if its HW or SW raid). Most only have 100MB used. SErvers are running apache, zend, tomcat, mysql etc. Ideally we dont want to have to shut them down to backup (but could). We assume that standard unix commands like tar, cpio, rsync, scp etc. are of no use as they only copy files, not partitions, all attributes, groups etc. i.e. do not produce a result which can simply be re-imaged to a new HD to get the serer back from dead. We have a large SAN, a spare windows box and spare unix boxes, but these are only visible to one layer in the network. We have an unused Dell DL2000 monster tape unit, but no sw or documentation for it. WE have a copy of symantec backup exec, but we have no budget for unix client licenses. (The company has negative amounts of money). We need to be able to initiate the backup remotely, as we can only access the servers in person in an emergency (i.e. to restore) Googling returns some applications to do this, e.g. clonezilla - looks difficult to install and invasive. Mondo, only seems to support backup if you are local to the machine. Amanda might be an option, but looks like days/weeks of work to learn and setup? Is there anything built into Centos, or do we have to go the route of installing, learning and configuring a set of backup softwares? Any ideas? This must be a pretty standard problem which goggling doesnt give an obvious answer.

• RDP exits immediately after connecting to Windows Server 2008 R2

  Background: I recently got a Windows cloud VPS server. I don't have much experience with server admin (I'm a programmer), and what little I do have is with linux servers. Ever since getting the server I've been having issues with RDP. I can connect about two or three times, after which point I can't connect until one of the tech guys "fixes" it (see below). When I connect, I can stay connected for hours with no problem. When the problem connecting starts, the first time I try to log in, the remote desktop window pops up, starts connecting, and then exits with "Your Remote Desktop session has ended". After that, for about 10-20 minutes if I try to connect again, the connections times out with Remote Desktop can't connect to the computer for one of these reasons: 1) Remote access on the server is not enabled 2) The remote computer is turned off 3) The remote computer is not available on the network then goes back to connecting once and immediately disconnecting. All of the updates are installed. The firewall has been correctly configured to let RDP traffic through. The remote setting is "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop". I tried creating a second user, and when I can't connect, I can't connect to that user either. I've tried both soft and hard reboots, neither of which help. I've tried connecting from two different computers (both running Windows 7) from two different networks (work and home), and the behavior is the same. Everything else on the server continues to run fine (IIS-served http pages, Tomcat-served java pages, svn, ping). The "fix" that the tech guys supply is simply logging into the console on their end, after which point I can connnect 2 or 3 times again. The event viewer on the server has "authentication failure" (or something similar) events generated when I attempt to log in and can't. I can't get to the actual event at the moment as I'm currently in the can't connect stage, and waiting for the techs to log in. But when I searched for the event earlier this morning I couldn't find anything useful. Can anyone help?

• Apache's htcacheclean doesn't scale: How to tame a huge Apache disk_cache?

  We have an Apache setup with a huge disk_cache (500.000 entries, 50 GB disk space used). The cache grows by 16 GB every day. My problem is that the cache seems to be growing nearly as fast as it's possible to remove files and directories from the cache filesystem! The cache partition is an ext3 filesystem (100GB, "-t news") on an iSCSI storage. The Apache server (which acts as a caching proxy) is a VM. The disk_cache is configured with CacheDirLevels=2 and CacheDirLength=1, and includes variants. A typical file path is "/htcache/B/x/i_iGfmmHhxJRheg8NHcQ.header.vary/A/W/oGX3MAV3q0bWl30YmA_A.header". When I try to call htcacheclean to tame the cache (non-daemon mode, "htcacheclean-t -p/htcache -l15G"), IOwait is going through the roof for several hours. Without any visible action. Only after hours, htcacheclean starts to delete files from the cache partition, which takes a couple more hours. (A similar problem was brought up in the Apache mailing list in 2009, without a solution: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg42683.html) The high IOwait leads to problems with the stability of the web server (the bridge to the Tomcat backend server sometimes stalls). I came up with my own prune script, which removes files and directories from random subdirectories of the cache. Only to find that the deletion rate of the script is just slightly higher than the cache growth rate. The script takes ~10 seconds to read the a subdirectory (e.g. /htcache/B/x) and frees some 5 MB of disk space. In this 10 seconds, the cache has grown by another 2 MB. As with htcacheclean, IOwait goes up to 25% when running the prune script continuously. Any idea? Is this a problem specific to the (rather slow) iSCSI storage? Should I choose a different file system for a huge disk_cache? ext2? ext4? Are there any kernel parameter optimizations for this kind of scenario? (I already tried the deadline scheduler and a smaller read_ahead_kb, without effect).

• What server setup for a small web development company? [closed]

  I co-own a company with a friend of mine and we have decided to buy a new server to support our business (our current server is an Asus EEE Box, working great but too limited :) ). I should mention that we are web developers but occasionally we do small-office sys admin. Thus, 99% of time we work on GNU/Linux (mainly Ubuntu) but from time to time we need to setup a Windows environment to assist some customers (e.g. setup a temporary SQL Server 2008). Our requirements: Low budget: we don't want the cheapest solution out there but we can't afford to spend too much. Budget could be ~1000-1500€ (before VAT) Robustness: we would like to setup a RAID array and maybe have an external disk where we can store backups Virtualization: we need to be able to setup few servers for development. The scenario is something like this (~8 appliances running in parallel): Redmine + GIT server Bacula server FTP server 3-4 virtual appliances that could be set up on demand to test our applications or support a customer. The appliances could be: LAMP, Tomcat+PostgreSQL, SQL Server Support: if something breaks down it shouldn't be too difficult to find a replacement. Now, given the main requirements, there are some doubts we need to clarify: Do you suggest to buy a prepackaged solution (for example a customized Dell PowerEdge T110 or T310) or to assemble the server by ourselves (buy the separate components)? What RAID configuration do you suggest? I was thinking of RAID1 (probably cheaper) or RAID5. should we buy a hardware RAID controller or is it ok to use a software RAID (mdadm)? In case, which controller do you suggest? What processor do you suggest (Intel Xeon, i3, i5, i7, AMD)? How much RAM? (I was thinking at least 8GB, ~1GB per appliance) What virtualization software do you recommend? VMWare seems to be the best choice, but what about XEN or KVM? We don't want to buy licenses at the moment so we would like to consider only free options. What OS do you recommend? We know Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo very well (we would like to use Ubuntu Server), however it seems a lot of people goes for CentOS. Thanks in advance if you can help us with this!   At QCon in March we had a sample Azure application implemented in both Java and Ruby to demonstrate that the Windows Azure Platform is not just about .NET. The following is an interesting interview with Rob Blackwell, the R&D director of the partner who implemented the application. UK Interoperability Team Interviews Rob Blackwell, R&D Director at Active Web Solutions. Is Microsoft taking interoperability seriously? Yes. In the past, I think Microsoft has, quite rightly come in for criticism, but architects and developers should look at this again. The Interoperability Bridges site (http://www.interoperabilitybridges.com/ ) shows a wide range of projects that allow interoperability from Java, Ruby and PHP for example. The Windows Azure platform has been architected with interoperable APIs in mind. It's straightforward to access the various storage facilities from just about any language or platform. Azure compute is capable of running more than just C# applications! Why is interoperability important to you? My company provides consultancy and bespoke development services. We're a Microsoft Gold Partner, but we live in the real world where companies have a mix of technologies provided by a variety of vendors. When developing an enterprise software solution, you rarely have a completely blank canvas. We often see integration scenarios where we need to exchange data with legacy systems. It's not unusual to see modern Silverlight applications being built on top of Java or Mainframe based back ends. Could you give us some examples of where interoperability has been important for your projects? We developed an innovative Sea Safety system for the RNLI Lifeboats here in the UK. Commercial Fishing is one of the most dangerous professions and we helped developed the MOB Guardian System which uses satellite technology and man overboard devices to raise the alarm when a fisherman gets into trouble. The solution is implemented in .NET running on Windows, but without interoperable standards, it would have been impossible to communicate with the satellite gateway technology. We also ported the application to Ruby on Rails for demonstration purposes. Visitors to the stand were surprised that this was even possible. Why should Java developers be interested in Windows Azure? Windows Azure Storage consists of Blobs, Queues and Tables. The storage is scalable, durable, secure and cost-effective. Using the WindowsAzure4j library, it's easy to use, and takes just a few lines of code. If you are writing an application with large data storage requirements, or you want an offsite backup, it makes a lot of sense. Running Java applications in Azure Compute is straightforward with tools like the Tomcat Solution Accelerator (http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/winazuretomcat )and AzureRunMe (http://azurerunme.codeplex.com/ ). The Windows Azure AppFabric Service Bus can also be used to connect heterogeneous systems running on different networks and in different data centres. How can The Service Bus be considered an interoperability solution? I think that the Windows Azure AppFabric Service Bus is one of Microsoft’s best kept secrets. Think of it as “a globally scalable application plumbing kit in the sky”. If you have used Enterprise Service Buses before, you’ll be familiar with the concept. Applications can connect to the service bus to securely exchange data – these can be point to point or multicast links. With the AppFabric Service Bus, the applications can exist anywhere that has access to the Internet and the connections can traverse firewalls. This makes it easy to extend or scale your application or reach out to other networks and technologies. For example, let’s say you have a SQL Server database running on premises and you want to expose the data to a Java application running in the cloud. You could set up a point to point Service Bus connection and use JDBC. Traditionally this would have been difficult or impossible without punching holes in firewalls and compromising security. • Tweaking Hudson memory usage

  Hudson 3.1 has some performance optimizations that greatly reduces its memory footprint. Prior to this Hudson used to always hold the entire data model (all jobs and all builds) in memory which affected scalability. Some installations configured heap sizes in excess of 1GB to counteract this. Hudson 3.1.x maintains an MRU cache and only loads jobs and builds as they are required. Because of the inability to change existing APIs and be backward compatible with plugins, there were limits to how far we could go with this approach. Memory optimizations almost always come with a related cost, in this case its additional I/O that has to be performed to load data on request. On a small site that has frequent traffic, this is usually not noticeable since the MRU cache will usually hold on to all the data. A large site with infrequent traffic might experience some delays when the first request hits the server after a long gap. If you have a large heap and are able to allocate more memory, the cache settings can be adjusted to take advantage of this and even go back to pre-3.1 behavior. All the cache settings can be passed as options to the JVM container (Tomcat or the default Jetty container) using the -D option. There are two caches, independant of each other, one for Jobs and the other for Builds. For the jobs cache: hudson.jobs.cache.evict_in_seconds ( default=60 ) Seconds from last access (could be because of a servlet request or a background cron thread) a job should be purged from the cache. Set this to 0 to never purge based on time. hudson.jobs.cache.initial_capacity ( default=1024 ) Initial number of jobs the cache can accomodate. Setting this to the number of jobs you typically display on your Hudson landing page or home page will speed up consecutive access to that page. If the default is too large you may consider downsizing and using that memory for the Builds cache instead. hudson.jobs.cache.max_entries ( default=1024) Maximum number of jobs in the cache. The default is large enough for most installations, but if you find I/O activity when always accessing the hudson home page you might consider increasing this, but first verify if the I/O is caused by frequent eviction (see above), rather than by the cache not being large enough. For the builds cache: The builds cache is used to store Build objects as they are read from storage. Typically this happens when a user drills down into the details of a particular Job from the hudson hom epage. The cache is shared among builds for different jobs since in most installations all jobs are not accessed with the same frequency, so a per-job builds cache would be a waste of memory. hudson.job.builds.cache.evict_in_seconds ( default=60 ) Same as the equivalent Job cache, applied to Build. hudson.job.builds.cache.initial_capacity" ( default=512 ) Same as equivalent Job cache setting. Note the smaller initial size. If your site stores a large number of builds and has frequent access to more builds you might consider bumping this up. hudson.job.builds.cache.max_entries ( default=10240 ) The default max is large enough for most installations, the builds cache has bigger sized objects, so be careful about increasing the upper limit on this. See section on monitoring below. Sample usage: java -jar hudson-war-3.1.2-SNAPSHOT.war -Dhudson.jobs.cache.evict_in_seconds=300 \ -Dhudson.job.builds.cache.evict_in_seconds=300 Monitoring cache usage The 'jmap' tool that comes with the JDK can be used to monitor cache performance in an indirect way by looking at the number of Job and Build objects in each cache. Find the PID of the hudson instance and run $ jmap -histo:live <pid | grep 'hudson.model.*Lazy.*Key$' Here's a sample output: num #instances #bytes class name 523: 28 896 hudson.model.RunMap$LazyRunValue$Key 1200: 3 96 hudson.model.LazyTopLevelItem$Key These are the keys to the Jobs (LazyTopLevelItem$Key) and Builds (RunMap$LazyRunValue$Key) in the caches, so counting the number of keys is a good indicator of the number of items in the cache at any given moment. The size in bytes can be ignored, they are just the size of the keys, not the actual sizes of the objects they hold. Those sizes can only be obtained with a profiler. With the output above we can conclude that there are 3 jobs and 28 builds in memory. The 28 builds can all be from 1 job or all 3 jobs. Over time on an idle system, these should get evicted and memory cache should be empty. In practice, because of background cron threads and triggers, jobs rarely fall down to zero. Access of a job or a build by a cron thread resets the eviction timer.

• Primefaces tabview: set the active index on tab change

  I've got a tab view that contains two tab. When I switch from tab 1 to tab 2, I'm calling some code that executes a validation and updates some values. Depending on the result of this validation, I would like to stay on tab 1, or go to tab 2, and refresh the tabs' content. My tabview: <h:form id="form"> <p:tabView id="tabview" activeIndex="#{ctrl.idx}" dynamic="true" cache="false"> <p:ajax event="tabChange" listener="#{ctrl.doStuff}" update=":form:tabview"/> <p:tab title="Tab 1" id="t1"> <h:panelGrid columns="1" cellpadding="10"> <h:outputText value="#{ctrl.s1}"/> </h:panelGrid> </p:tab> <p:tab title="Tab 2" id="t2"> <h:panelGrid columns="1" cellpadding="10"> <h:outputText value="#{ctrl.s2}"/> </h:panelGrid> </p:tab> </p:tabView> </h:form> My test code that simly changes the values: public void doStuff() { s1 = String.valueOf(Math.random()); s2 = String.valueOf(Math.random()); } I thought that changing the active tab index in my method would be enough, like that: public void doStuff() { // ... idx = 0; } On tabChange event, the method is called but the tabview components goes to the clicked tab, ignoring the idx new value. I thought adding an update attribute to p:ajax would render the whole tabview but only the tabs and/or the tabs' content is re rendered. And weirdest of all, if I change update=":form:tabview" to update=":form" or update="@form", I only receive the tab's content in the ajax response - the component disappears from the page! My bean is viewscoped, I'm using Primefaces 3.5, JSF 2.1 and Tomcat 7. Any idea? Thanks.

• Error Connecting to Oracle Database from Pentaho Report Designer

  Hi all, I am new to Pentaho, and I am struggling to set up a new database connection. I am trying to connect to an Oracle 10g database, but whenever I test the connection, I get the below error. It doesn't really seem to list any specific error message so I'm not really sure what to do or where to go from this point.   Hi, I'm working on establishing interoperability between .NET WCF 3.5 and Axis2/Rampart using ADFS2 as the STS and using SAML authentication. Initially I used Axis 1.4.1/Rampart 1.4 but in an attempt to rule out issues relating to WS-* standards compatbility have also created a duplicate environment running Axis 1.5.1/Rampart 1.5. Both envionment use Eclipse 3.5.1 (Galileo)/Tomcat 5.5 for the Java service side. My objective is: WCF-ADFS2-SAML token-Axis2/Rampart Using Kerberos authentication to obtain a SAML token from ADFS2 and propagating this to Rampart.   I use liferay 5.2 with jsf-portlet. From the page I want to press a button to generate one PDF. In managedbean i build pdf and I want to show it in response. In a ByteArrayOutputStream named outputStream i have my pdf built with JasperReport.
