• Suitable companion monitors for HP LP3065 30" primary monitor

  I have an HP LP3065 30" monitor - now I want to add a couple of companion screens to either side of it - I've heard to people suggesting 21" monitors in portrait mode - but it seems difficult to find a suitable panel these day, as 22" wide-screen monitors have become common, and I can't seem to find anything with a suitable 1600 pixel width. Can anyone recommend a suitable monitor, and suggest what criteria are best for picking a suitable monitor - what's important to consider - I'm thinking things like: Exact resolution match? Viewing angle? Small/thin bezel?

• ssh freezes when trying to connect to some hosts

  When I try to ssh to particular machine/s in a list, The SSH command happens to be freezing. I tried out setting ssh timeout. But then also it's freezes even after the timeout. A work around I thought was to create a child process for each ssh calls and if the process doesn't respond after a timeout - Kill it. But are there any less complex ways, so that I can accommodate it in a shell script itself rather than going for a C/C++ program ?

• Are there any 17-20 inch monitors that support displayport?

  I've got dual monitors now (both 20 inch 1600x1200). After seeing the new eyefinity cards out there (and reading the CodingHorror post on three monitors) I've decided to get a third. It's time to upgrade my video card anyway. Since I don't already have a third monitor and will be buying one new, I figure it'd make sense to buy one that already had a DisplayPort interface so as to avoid the adapter issue. However, I can't seem to find any monitors on newegg that support this (it's not even an option in the power search, and a keyword search turned up only adapters and video cards). A quick google showed me several 30 inchers (like Dell's, but that's way too expensive, and I don't have that much room on my desk even if I had that money) and some 22 inch models. Again, I'm looking for a 17-20 inch with a DisplayPort interface built in. Any suggestions?

• Is there a convenient method to pull files from a server in an SSH session?

  I often SSH into a cluster node for work and after processing want to pull several results back to my local machine for analysis. Typically, to do this I use a local shell to scp from the server, but this requires a lot of path manipulation. I'd prefer to use a syntax like interactive FTP and just 'pull' files from the server to my local pwd. Another possible solution might be to have some way to automatically set up my client computer as an ssh alias so that something like scp results home:~/results would work as expected. Is there any obscure SSH trick that'll do this for me? Working from grawity's answer, a complete solution in config files is something like local .ssh/config: Host ex HostName ssh.example.com RemoteForward 10101 localhost:22 ssh.example.com .ssh/config: Host home HostName localhost Port 10101 which lets me do commands exactly like scp results home: transferring the file results to my home machine.

  I am trying to open port 80 and 3690 for HTTP and svnserve respectively. I have Windows Firewall off, and have tried temporarily disabling Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise, to no avail. According to http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/, both ports 80 and 3690 are still blocked. I can't think of what would be blocking them if Windows Firewall and my antivirus are disabled. • How do I configure ubuntu server's iptables to allow java without opening the floodgates?

  I'm new to servers, so please bear with me. I have my amateur site running. Problem is, I followed Rackspace's instructions on setting up iptables and am pretty sure that's why the java server I'm trying to use on port 8080 isn't working (it runs the script but my android test app doesn't connect to it). When I try running the same java server script on port 80 it doesn't even start. I also ran nmap on my domain and saw that indeed only port 80 and 22 (for ssh) are responding. Is it possible to run Java and apache happily on the same server? If so, how can I configure my iptables correctly. (I'm aware that I should probably do some sort of filtering in the java server itself, but will figure that out later).

• APF, IPTABLES, Fedora 15 - Not blocking correctly

  I just got a new remote server which came with Fedora 15. I first tried to run APF but it gave me this error "apf(18031): {glob} unable to load iptables module (ip_tables), aborting.". Which I then set SET_MONOKERN="0" to SET_MONOKERN="1" to resolve the problem. However, with my config file showing BLK_P2P_PORTS="1214,2323,4660_4678,6257,6699,6346,6347,6881_6889,6346,7778" The ports show up as closed, instead of being filtered. • Unix: sleep until the specified time

  Is there a (semi-)standard Unix command that would sleep until the time specified on its command line? In other words, I am looking for something similar to sleep that would take wakeup time rather than duration. For example: sleeptill 05:00:00 I can code something up but would rather not re-invent the wheel if there's already something out there. Bonus question: it would be great if it could take the timezone (as in sleeptill 05:00:00 America/New_York). edit Due to the nature of what I am doing, I am looking for a "sleep until T" rather than "run command at T" solution. edit For the avoidance of doubt, if I run the command at 18:00 and tell it to wake up at 17:00, I expect it to sleep for 23 hours (or, in some corner cases having to do with daylight savings time, for 22 or 24 hours.)

• When XP is asleep for a long time LAN reports code 43, gives up the ghost.

  This one's got me stumped. Whenever the system is asleep for a long time, e.g overnight, the LAN driver reports error code 43 ("a problem") and turns itself off. This has being going on for months, but I never caught the problem until now. The owner merely shuttles back to a restore point I set her when the machine worked. Previously (without knowing exactly what was happening) I have tried everything to resolve this. Manually resetting the TCP/IP, fiddling with the driver Wake From LAN settings, DIFFERENT drivers, etc. etc. The solution is easy, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. Understandably, though, the user is uncomfortable with this operation and the problem persists. What's causing it and how to stop it recurring? Any ideas? Thanks in advance to this great community. • External Hard Disk's secter could not be read ?

  I've an 500 GB Seagate External Hard Disk (NTFS) . Currently, I can't open it at Windows. Thus, I've tired with chkdsk command .. but still it stopped and can't continue checking disk.. Also I've tired with fsck on Mac . Then, it shows me the Error .. /Volumes/<HD Name>/ is not a character device CONTINUE? yes /Volumes/<HD Name>/ (NO WRITE) CANNOT READ: BLK 16 CONTINUE? yes THE FOLLOWING DISK SECTORS COULD NOT BE READ: 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, ioctl (GCINFO): Inappropriate ioctl for device fsck: /Volumes/<HD Name>/: can't read disk label The volume I've used is around 300 GB , Thus, it's hard to back up and format again . Thus, any helpful suggestions and solutions will be appreciated pretty well.

  I am having extremely long formulas over an extremely big sheet. At the moment I am tracking the formulas with the Formula Auditing Tool. However, my idea would be to just replace for example in a formula like this: =IF(AND(ROUND($GX19-SUM(0)/$M$12;2)<=0;$AK$7=1);0;$M$12*$M$22/$K$62 My idea would be to replace the excel cell names with the table row names they are in. Like: =IF(AND(ROUND( "Income" -SUM(0)/ "Debt" ;2)<=0; "Percentage" =1);0; "Investment" * "Debt of house" / "Investment costs" Is there any way to achive sth. like that in excel? • Do TCP connections work differently within the same subnet?

  I've encountered some network behaviour that confuses me while trying to get Java RMI working. I use netcat to connect to a local machine: [my_machine]$ nc -w 1 192.168.0.100 60000 && echo success success I try to do the same to my server: [my_machine]$ nc -w 1 my-servers-ip 60000 && echo success This doesn't work, unless I explicitly listen on the server socket: [amazon_ec2]$ nc -l 60000 [my_machine]$ nc -w 1 my-servers-ip 60000 && echo success success For the version that fails, the SYN packet receives a RST, ACK in response. I'm not too knowledgable about this stuff, at this point I only have wild theories such as the one in the question. Any ideas? • How to get monitor resolution of 1680x1050 using ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO in a dual monitor setup

  I have Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics card in my Windows Server 2008 x64 machine. It has two outputs a VGA and a DVI. I have connected the DVI to my Dell 24" monitor with 1900x1200 resolution and it works 100%. The VGA I have connected to my second monitor a Samsung 22" with native resolution of 1680x1050. But the ATI driver and Catalyst control centre doesn't show this resolution as an option. If I choose a lower resolution like 1280x1024 it looks really bad and fuzzy. I searched in google and downloaded the powerstrip tool that allowed me to create a custom resolution of 1680x1050 and then this option shows up in Catalyst control centre and my 2nd monitor works fine now. But I don't want to pay for an application to choose a display resolution. Why doesn't ATI show me that option by default even though it has no problem in actually supporting the display at resolution. Is there a way to get 1680x1050 resolution using ATI drivers only ?

• Ubuntu 12.04 Transparent proxy gateway

  i have a ubuntu server which i want to use as a transparent proxy, (i have no issue setting up squid, just the iptables. The server only has one network interface. The server sits on the same subnet as the router which is the current gateway to the internet for clients, i want to simply set the gateway on the clients pointing at the transparent proxy which in turn forwards the requests to the router and off to the internet. • Dell eSATAp not working with some SATA disks

  I have a Dell Inspiron XPS 15 (L502X) laptop, with an eSATAp port. I also have a Western Digital 1TB 3"5 SATA drive, that I'd like to use with the laptop. I bought a eSATAp <- SATA 22-pin cable (from Delock). When I use this cable my 3"5 HDD does NOT power up, no spin up. I thought that it's just this HDD taking too much power from the motherboard. However, I tested too with my 2"5 SATA HDD and it works successfully. Now the weird thing is that this 2"5 HDD takes 1.1A at 5V, and that the 3"5 HDD takes 0.7A at 5V. I don't understand why it can't work. Is there anything I could do for it to work ? What is really the problem ? Thanks for your help, Hugo

  I have a few machines set up on my internal 192.168.1.* network and i have one public ip, my router is links all ports to on internal linux machine on my network 192.168.1.3. I want to know how to configure the DNS server on my linux box to forward to internal LAN ip's depending on the host name. EG. computer4.83.22.56.12 would find my box then forward to 192.168.1.4 on the local network. This is so i can run multiple web server under one ip. btw, i use Ubuntu. Thanks Dave

• emacs starting maximised

  I want a keyboard shortcut to open emacs in a maximised window. I tried emacs --fullscreen, but that is full screen rather than maximised window... That is, the emacs window covers ubuntu menu bars. emacs -fw gets a full width window and emacs -fh gets a full height window, but if you put both options, it only reads the second one. At the moment, I just have another keyboard shortcut for maximising a window. Is there a way to get emacs to start maximised? Ubuntu 9.10, emacs 22, if that makes a difference.

  I have a Virtualbox VM running on a computer connected to Internet via an Ethernet cable. The guest has a network adapter attached to a NAT. 2 ports (22 and 80) are forwarded so that the host can access them respectively on localhost:2222 and localhost:8080. When the Ethernet cable is plugged, both machine (host and guest) can access Internet and the host can access the SSH server/Webserver which ports are forwarded. When I unplug the Ethernet cable from the host, the host can not access the SSH server/Webserver of the guest anymore. Same situation with a Laptop connected to Internet via wireless when I disable the wireless adapter or set a wrong WPA key. My question is: is there a workaround for the host to access the guest services even if its Ethernet cable is unplugged / wireless is not available?

  So I have a 70 page pdf document that I'm trying to condense to a small booklet. I tried creating a formula to manually to perform it but it got ugly fast. 35,36,34,37,17,54,16,55,33,38,32,39,15,56,14,57,31,40,30,41,13,58,12,59 29,42,28,43,11,60,10,61,27,44,26,45,9,62,8,63,25,46,24,47,7,64,6,65 23,48,22,49,5,66,4,67,21,50,20,51,3,68,2,69,19,52,18,53,1,70 Once I print the booklet I should be able to cut the sheets in half and set the bottom half behind the top and staple it for a simple book. Which means Page 1 should have pages 35,36,17,54,34,37,16,55 Page 2 should have pages 33,38,15,56,32,39,14,57 And several pages later Page 9 should have pages 19,52,1,70,18,53 But manually doing this is a headache and it seems like the booklet function should contain functionality that can perform this. I'm using a commercial Konica Minolta C452

  My site receives a lot of traffic for 2 hours during the day (2000 hits per minute). The rest of the day receives less traffic(500e hits per minute). I have been experimenting with the MaxClients and MaxSpareServers values but I still get some downtime during peek hours. How can I calculate the best values for my configuration based on the amount of ram that I have ?   I am trying to run a java application on my EC2 instance. The application accepts socket connections on port 54321. If I try and connect to it, it times out.
