• stumped by WSGI module import errors

  Hi, I'm writing a bare bones Python wsgi application and am getting stumped by module import errors. I have a .py file in the current directory which initially failed to import. By adding sys.path.insert(0, '/Users/guhar/Sites/acom') the import of the module worked. But I now try and import a module that I had installed via easy_install and it fails to import. I tried setting sys.path.insert(0, '/Library/Python/2.5/site-packages/') which contains the egg file, but to no avail. I would've thought that all packages under "/Library/Python/2.5/site-packages/" would be available to a WSGI application. Does anybody have any pointers?

• C# : Direct3D in a control, AND fullscreen on a secondary monitor - what's the best way ?

  I'm working on a C# application that needs to use Direct3D in a control in a windows form, AND (at the same time) fullscreen on a secondary monitor. Basically, I want a Windows Forms application on one screen with a user-interface to control the graphics, and I'd like to show preview-graphics in a small control, and full-blown superduper megafancy graphics fullscreen on a secondary monitor. What's the best way to approach this? (For example, I know XNA can render in a Windows Forms control, but is it possible to then add a fullscreen window on another monitor as well?)

• How to use Preprocessor directives in MVC aspx pages

  I am using MinifyJS.tt which is a T4 template to minify all my JS files automatically. In my aspx files, I am referencing all the javascript files. Now, I want to add a condition (maybe compiler directive) to use the original JS file when I am debugging the application, and to use the minified JS files when I simply run the application without debug. I tried using #if in the aspx page, but that did not seem to work. Can we make use of preprocessor directives in aspx pages? Is there an alternative way to achieve my goal?

• What is the point in using a "real" database modeling tool?

  We currently have a 10 year old nasty, spaghetti-code-style SQL Server database that we are soon looking to pretty much re-write from scratch as part of a re-write to a large web application. (The existing application will serve as the functional requirements for the next incarnation of the app). Some have suggested we use Visio to do all the diagramming and to generate the DDL, but others have suggested we use a dedicated database design tool, rather than a diagramming tool that is able to export DDL. Is there any benefit to using "real" DB design tools, such as ModelRight, over general tools like Visio? If so, what are those specific benefits? Edit: In a nutshell, what can real/dedicated tools do that something like Visio can't, and how much do these capabilities matter (from a best-practices standpoint, for example)

• The Reason of Service Termination

  I use a service application I created in Delphi. My problem is that it is sometimes terminated by the operating system and I don't know why this happens. When I go the the system events, I can find a piece of information like this one: Event ID: 7034, The [...] service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this [...] time(s). I know you can't give me an answer why this happens, but could you please give me a clue what to pay attention to to find the reason of that behaviour? For instance what kind of exceptions could make the OS close an application. Thank you in advance.

  I'm creating a Ruby on Rails application, and I'm trying to create/login/logout users. Other things such as questions_asked, reputation, etc. are set by the application, so should be initialized when we create new users. Right now, I'm just setting each of those manually in the create method for UsersController: def create @user = User.new(params[:user]) @user.reputation = 0 @user.questions_asked = 0 @user.answers_given = 0 @user.request = nil ... end Is there a more elegant/efficient way of doing this?

  Hi! I am developing application using J2EE (JSF,RichFaces, Jetty/Glashfish). Sometimes when I click on some link I get nothing returned to the browser at all (blank page). But when i refresh the page all contents appears in page. After some trail and error i found that it is cookies problem: It happens bez some old cookie not deleted by browser so this problem occurs. We also change web.xml file: but it creates more problem it doesn't maintain the session in application. Please friends if you have any suggestion on this problem help us.

• Tiling solution for the iPhone that can handle infinite # of tiles

  I have been looking at ways to implement a tiling solution on the iPhone/iPad similar to something like Google Maps. I have looked at examples of how to implement a CATiledLayer into a view that is inside a UIScrollView. Then when you scroll the view, the tiles request the new data to be shown. However, this seems to work when you have a finite view size (ie: 3000x3000). However, how could I work this into a tiling solution for much larger sizes. Basically, I want to be able to show data as needed for tiles as large as I can. Can I somehow use CATiledLayer to do this? Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

• How to order a TimeZone list in .NET?

  I have an ASP.NET web application that requires users to select their appropriate time zone so that it can correctly show local times for events. In creating a simple approach for selecting the time zone, I started by just using the values from TimeZoneInfo.GetSystemTimeZones(), and showing that list. The only problem with this is that since our application is primarily targeted at the United States, I'd like to show those entries first, basically starting with Eastern Time and working backwards (West) until I reach Atlantic time. What's a good approach to do this in code?

• Does a .NET 4.0 website load faster for a reason?

  I have been using DotNetBlogEngine for many years, and today my host (JodoHost.com) officially turned on support for .NET 4.0. What I've noticed immediately is that the website loads tremendously faster on the first load, subsequent loads are only slightly faster. The website is compiled as a .NET 2.0 web application. Is there a known reason for this performance increase? Was there a change in the .NET 4.0 framework that improved the initial load time of websites into an application pool? • Easy to use time-stamps in Python

  I'm working on a journal-type application in Python. The application basically permits the user write entries in the journal and adds a time-stamp for later querying the journal. As of now, I use the time.ctime() function to generate time-stamps that are visually friendly. The journal entries thus look like: Thu Jan 21 19:59:47 2010 Did something Thu Jan 21 20:01:07 2010 Did something else Now, I would like to be able to use these time-stamps to do some searching/querying. I need to be able to search, for example, for "2010", or "feb 2010", or "23 feb 2010". My questions are: 1) What time module(s) should I use: time vs datetime? 2) What would be an appropriate way of creating and using the time-stamp objects? Many thanks!

• Visual Studio soft-crashing when encountering XAML Errors in initialize.

  I've been having some serious issues with Visual Studio 2010 as of late. It's been crashing in a peculiar way when I encounter certain types of XAML errors during the InitializeComponent() of a control/window. The program breaks and visual studio gears up like it's catching an exception (because it is) and then stops midway displaying a broken highlight in my XAML file with no details as to what is wrong. Example: There is not pop outs, or details Anywhere about what is wrong, only a callstack that points to my InitializeComponent() call. Now normally I'd just do some trial and error to fix this problem, and find out where i messed up, but the real problem isn't my code. Visual Studio is rendered completely useless at this point. It reports my application still in "Running" mode. The Stop/Break/Restart buttons on the toolbar or in the menus don't do anything (but grey out). Closing the application does not stop this behaviour, closing visual studio gets it stuck in a massive loop where it yells at me complaining every file open is not in the debug project, then repeats this process when i have exausted every open file. I have to force-close devenv.exe, and after this happening 3-4 times in a row it's a lot of wasted time (as my projects are usually pretty big and studio can be quite slow @ loading). To the point Has anyone else experienced this? How can I stop studio from locking up. Can I at LEAST get information out of this beast another way so i can fix my XAML error sooner rather than after 3-4 trial-and-error compiles yielding the same crash? Any & All help would be appreciated. Visual Studio 2010 version: 10.0.30319.1RTM Edit & Update FWIW, mostly the errors that cause this are XamlParseExceptions (I figured this out after i found what was wrong with my XAML). I think I need to be clearer though, Im not looking for the solution to my code problem, as these are usually typos / small things, I'm looking for a solution to VStudio getting all buggered up as a result. The particular error in the above image that 100% for sure caused this was a XamlParseException caused by forgetting a Value attribute on a data trigger. I've fixed that part but it still doesn't tell my why my studio becomes a lump of neutered program when a perfectly normal exception is thrown in the parsing of the XAML. Code that will cause this issue (at least for me) This is the base template WPF Application, with the following Window.xaml code. The problem is a missing Value="True" on the <DataTrigger ...> in the template. It generates a XamlParseException and Visual Studio Crashes as described above when debugging it.   When we set the CurrentCulture and/or CurrentUICulture we do this on the current thread like this: Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture = new CultureInfo("en-GB"); Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture = new CultureInfo("en-GB"); Doest this mean we could affect the culture settings of multiple users of our web application as their requests may reuse the threads from pool? I am working on an ASP.NET MVC application where each user may have own culture setting specified in his/her account data. When the user logs in, the culture setting is retrieved from the database and has to be set as current culture. My worry is that setting the current culture on the current thread may affect another user request reusing this thread. I am even more concerned reading this: ASP.NET not only uses a thread pool, but may switch threads during request processing.

• Doesn't get into Debug Mode

  When I Press F5 on my VS2005 to debug the application, it launches the web app window but it is coming out of debug mode. When I tried to trace the Error in the EventViewer, this was the error: Failed in Token.vb(GetToken). The token was not in memory and the identity of the authenticated IIS caller was not permitted. The session may have unexpectedly terminated. The specific error message included: Session state can only be used when enableSessionState is set to true, either in a configuration file or in the Page directive. Please also make sure that System.Web.SessionStateModule or a custom session state module is included in the \\ section in the application configuration. I don't have any httpModules section in my config file and the sessionState mode="InProc"...

• Online product demo environment for Windows applications

  I'm looking for a way to allow potential customers to try my application before they buy it. The product is a windows forms application that requires an SQL Server database to operate. Although I have a functional demo that the customer can install on their network, I want to make it easier for them by have them "play" with it at my environment. I remember Microsoft had (has?) something similar. I was testing Visual Studio a few years ago in a virtual environment where I was connecting to a server at Microsoft. Any suggestions? Thanks.

• Which Win32 API reports the Format preference in the Region and Language control panel?

  Windows 7 and Windows Vista have a Region and Language control panel which contains a Formats tab which contains a popup menu titled Format. This menu allows the user to select from among many language-oriented sets of number, currency, time, and date formatting preferences regardless of the language of the base system. For example, I could decide I prefer the default currency symbol to be Japanese yen on a US English system. The Windows Contacts application changes its behavior depending on these format preferences. For example, if I select Japanese formatting preferences, Windows Contacts displays and lets me edit phonetic names (AKA "ruby", "yomi", and "furigana") but not middle names. If I select US English formatting preferences, Windows Contacts displays and lets me edit middle names but not phonetic names. I need to write code (native C calling Win32) which mirrors the behavior of the Windows Contacts application in this respect. Which API should I call?

• Getting websites to detect our mobile browser

  I've been asked to find out a sensible way to make the majority of popular websites detect our browser - which is functionally complete, but is running on rather constrained hardware - as a "mobile" browser. The idea is that the heaviest popular websites seem to have mobile versions, which render much faster and fit better on the screen. I've looked at the inverse question, which tells me that there isn't an obvious standard way of doing it - http://www.brainhandles.com/techno-thoughts/detecting-mobile-browsers is a case in point. This is borne out by looking at a variety of User-Agent strings from popular mobile and desktop browsers. So far the best idea we can come up with is to add "Mobile" to the string somewhere, since this is the main visible difference between Safari for iPad/iPhone and for Windows/Mac. Does anyone have a better idea?

I want to get the valid emailID from the list.If I use the emailaddress from the address book of any mail account then the name of the user get appended with the emailID .eg:"Ayushi Soni" ,.. and then copy these address to a textbox in an MVC application. Now I want to retrieve the actual EmailID from the list ignoring the name that is appended.Is there any utitliy or jquery that we can use to filter this out and validate the filtered email.   Dear all, I have read the Blackberry documentation and it is possible to push a notification from a webapp. I am planning to create a Blackberry application that compliments to our webapps. But I am still left in the middle whether to develop a webapp or native Blackberry app. I have also look at how a webapp runs on Blackberry browser and it looks smooth. From your experience does the native app offer something that the webapp doesn't? Bonus question, is Facebook and Twitter app on Blackberry a native app or a webapp? If it is a webapp, is it possible to make a launcher for the application on Blackberry? Thanks for your help.

• Explanation for expires header

  I have a joomla application working on Apache.To improve site performace we have written a .htaccess file to root of the application with setting a far future expires header to all the static content. As desired first time the files load in fresh with 200 status code. when again click on the same link many of the files are served directly from cache. I need explanation for two things When i press f5 then a number of files load with 304 status code however i expected them to be coming directly from cache without hitting the server for a status header? When i close the browser and come back to the same page again i see the same thing happening a number of files load with 304 status code although i thought they will load directly from the browser cache? I understand that 304 also servs file from browser cache but i want to avoid the header communication between servers as my static files wont ever change. Also i want to add that my requests are over a https connection does that create any issue.
