• Throwing exception from a property when my object state is invalid

  Microsoft guidelines say: "Avoid throwing exceptions from property getters", and I normally follow that. But my application uses Linq2SQL, and there is the case where my object can be in invalid state because somebody or something wrote nonsense into the database. Consider this toy example: [Table(Name="Rectangle")] public class Rectangle { [Column(Name="ID", IsPrimaryKey = true, IsDbGenerated = true)] public int ID {get; set;} [Column(Name="firstSide")] public double firstSide {get; set;} [Column(Name="secondSide")] public double secondSide {get; set;} public double sideRatio { get { return firstSide/secondSide; } } } Here, I could write code which ensures that my application never writes a Rectangle with a zero-length side into the database. But no matter how bulletproof I make my own code, somebody could open the database with a different application and create an invalid Rectangle, especially one with a 0 for secondSide. (For this example, please forget that it is possible to design the database in a way such that writing a side length of zero into the rectangle table is impossible; my domain model is very complex and there are constraints on model state which cannot be expressed in a relational database). So, the solution I am gravitating to is to change the getter to: get { if(firstSide > 0 && secondSide > 0) return firstSide/secondSide; else throw new System.InvalidOperationException("All rectangle sides should have a positive length"); } The reasoning behind not throwing exceptions from properties is that programmers should be able to use them without having to make precautions about catching and handling them them. But in this case, I think that it is OK to continue to use this property without such precautions: if the exception is thrown because my application wrote a non-zero rectangle side into the database, then this is a serious bug. It cannot and shouldn't be handled in the application, but there should be code which prevents it. It is good that the exception is visibly thrown, because that way the bug is caught. if the exception is thrown because a different application changed the data in the database, then handling it is outside of the scope of my application. So I can't do anything about it if I catch it. Is this a good enough reasoning to get over the "avoid" part of the guideline and throw the exception? Or should I turn it into a method after all? Note that in the real code, the properties which can have an invalid state feel less like the result of a calculation, so they are "natural" properties, not methods.

• Should custom data elements be stored as XML or database entries?

  There are a ton of questions like this, but they are mostly very generalized, so I'd like to get some views on my specific usage. General: I'm building a new project on my own in Django. It's focus will be on small businesses. I'd like to make it somewhat customizble for my clients so they can add to their customer/invoice/employee/whatever items. My models would reflect boilerplate items that all ModelX might have. For example: first name last name email address ... Then my user's would be able to add fields for whatever data they might like. I'm still in design phase and am building this myself, so I've got some options. Working on... Right now the 'extra items' models have a FK to the generic model (Customer and CustomerDataPoints for example). All values in the extra data points are stored as char and will be coerced/parced into their actual format at view building. In this build the user could theoretically add whatever values they want, group them in sets and generally access them at will from the views relavent to that model. Pros: Low storage overhead, very extensible, searchable Cons: More sql joins My other option is to use some type of markup, or key-value pairing stored directly onto the boilerplate models. This coul essentially just be any low-overhead method weather XML or literal strings. The view and form generated from the stored data would be taking control of validation and reoganizing on updates. Then it would just dump the data back in as a char/blob/whatever. Something like: <datapoint type='char' value='something' required='true' /> <datapoint type='date' value='01/01/2001' required='false' /> ... Pros: No joins needed, Updates for validation and views are decoupled from data Cons: Much higher storage overhead, limited capacity to search on extra content So my question is: If you didn't live in the contraints impose by your company what method would you use? Why? What benefits or pitfalls do you see down the road for me as a small business trying to help other small businesses? Just to clarify, I am not asking about custom UI elements, those I can handle with forms and template snippets. I'm asking primarily about data storage and retreival of non standardized data relative to a boilerplate model.

• Rhythmbox - put a playlist on my iPod

  I have an old iPod nano and currently use iTunes in Windows to management. However, I'm trying to switch to Ubuntu. So far, iPod management is one major holdup. Besides being unable to easily manage podcasts, I also don't see a way to create a playlist and put it on my iPod. I can create a playlist on the computer in Rhythmbox, but I can't drag and drop it onto the iPod. I can create a playlist on the iPod itself, put I can't drag and drop songs from my library into it. If I right-click the songs, I can add them to playlists on the computer, but not on the iPod. How can I create a playlist of music in Rhythmbox and sync it to my iPod?

• VS2010 Launch Presentations

  Last week I was in Vegas to present at the DevConnections / VS2010 Launch event.  The show was well-attended and everybody I spoke to agreed it was educational and enjoyable.  My three talks were all on Wednesday, 14 April 2010, including one at 8am for which I was impressed to see a large turnout in attendance.   Pragmatic ASP.NET Tips, Tricks, and Tools My first session was on tips, tricks, and tools for ASP.NET developers.  This is a talk Ive given in past years, but which I refine every time.  I usually like to have a full session to devote to tools, and a separate talk just for Tips and Tricks, but for this show I was only given the one 75-minute slot, so I had to cut some materials to make things fit.  The talk went well, all the demos work, and the attendees seemed to enjoy it, and I like giving it, so hopefully I can continue to present on this topic in future DevConnections shows.   SOA stands for Service Oriented Architecture and has only really come together as a concrete approach in the last 15 years or so, although the concepts involved have been around for longer. Oracle SOA Suite is based around the Service Component Architecture (SCA) devised by the Open SOA collaboration of companies including Oracle and IBM. SCA, as used in SOA suite, is designed as a way to crystallise the concepts of SOA into a standard which ensures that SOA principles like the separation of application and business logic are maintained. Orchestration or Integration? A common thing to see with many people who are beginning to either build a new SOA based infrastructure, or move an old system to be service oriented, is confusion in the purpose of SOA technologies like BPEL and enterprise service buses. For a lot of problems, orchestration tools like BPEL or integration tools like an ESB will both do the job and achieve the right objectives; however it’s important to remember that, although a hammer can be used to drive a screw into wood, that doesn’t mean it’s the best way to do it. Service Integration is the act of connecting components together at a low level, which usually results in a single external endpoint for you to expose to your customers or other teams within your organisation – a simple product ordering system, for example, might integrate a stock checking service and a payment processing service. Process Orchestration, however, is generally a higher level approach whereby the (often externally exposed) service endpoints are brought together to track an end-to-end business process. This might include the earlier example of a product ordering service and couple it with a business rules service and human task to handle edge-cases. A good (but not exhaustive) rule-of-thumb is that integrations performed by an ESB will usually be real-time, whereas process orchestration in a SOA composite might comprise processes which take a certain amount of time to complete, or have to wait pending manual intervention. BPEL vs BPMN For some, with pre-existing SOA or business process projects, this decision is effectively already made. For those embarking on new projects it’s certainly an important consideration for those using Oracle SOA software since, due to the components included in SOA Suite and BPM Suite, the choice of which to buy is determined by what they offer. Oracle SOA suite has no BPMN engine, whereas BPM suite has both a BPMN and a BPEL engine. SOA suite has the ESB component “Mediator”, whereas BPM suite has none. Decisions must be made, therefore, on whether just one or both process modelling languages are to be used. The wrong decision could be costly further down the line. • Connecting to local Sql server 2005 through Internet

  Hello My Sql server is on Local Machine, I want to access it through Internet. I Configure Surace manager and Configuration manager of sqlserver 2005 for remote access. My sqlserver is running on port:1433 I am using port forwarding , I can access service of other ports, My Connetion String Is: Data Source=190.190.200.100,1433;Network Library=DBMSSOCN;Initial Catalog=myDataBase;User ID=myUsername;Password=myPassword; But it gives following error when i am trying to connect sql server through internet: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.)

  Recently, one of my desktops seems to have developed a problem with the fstab and mounting USB drives. The specific error I receive is... Unable to mount TRAVELDRIVE Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: Unprivileged user can not mount NTFS block devices using the external FUSE library. Either mount the volume as root, or rebuild NTFS-3G with integrated FUSE support and make it setuid root. At the moment the DLR supports languages such as Iron Ruby and Iron Python, together with dynamic extensions for C# and VB.NET. Where DLR will also score is the ability to write your own Dot Net language for specialist areas. So how does this book fare in introducing the DLR? It is a book that will require careful study and perhaps reading several times before fully understanding the subject. You will need to spend time trying out the sample code. So who would I recommend this book to? I recommend it to C# development teams for their library. I recommend it to individuals who not only know C# but have a good history of learning other computer languages. It is not a book that can just be "dipped into", but will require one or more reads from start to finish. This is no reflection on the skill of the author but of the newness of the material.

The OOW hands-on lab uses Oracle Database 12c Release 1 (12.1) and uses the MATCH_RECOGNIZE clause to perform some basic pattern matching examples in SQL. This lab is broken down into four main steps: Logically partition and order the data that is used in the MATCH_RECOGNIZE clause with its PARTITION BY and ORDER BY clauses. Define patterns of rows to seek using the PATTERN clause of the MATCH_RECOGNIZE clause. These patterns use regular expressions syntax, a powerful and expressive feature, applied to the pattern variables you define. Specify the logical conditions required to map a row to a row pattern variable in the DEFINE clause. Define measures, which are expressions usable in the MEASURES clause of the SQL query. • What if you could work on anything you wanted?

  What if you could work on anything you wanted? Redgate is doing an experiment of sorts this week.  Called Down Tools Week.    The idea is that they stopped working on their regular projects for a week and strike out on something that catches their attention and drives their passion. Evidently in many cases, these projects have turned out to be new features in their existing products that individual were interested in, some were internal iniatives and some where evidently off the wall new ideas.   Today is show and tell where they will share with each other what they have been working on. There may well be some interesting announcements coming out of this.    The prospects are exciting. I understand that Google does something similar allowing their employees a specified amount of time to work on projects of their own choosing.    This has been the breeding ground for some of my favorite services. It is a shame that more companies do not follow such practices.   Now I know that most companies cannot afford to shut down everything for a week and sometimes you can't really explore an interesting idea in 8 hours a week or however much time Google allocates, but still it may be worth while. What would happen if your company gave you as an individual 1 week each quarter to work on a project of your own design and see what happens?   I would be happen if you still had to get approval for before your week long adventure. Personally, I think that this could be a very effective use of training budgets.   Give me a week to research something on my own and you would be amazed at what I can find out.    Maybe this should be the prerequisite before starting a new project.   Stagger the team onboarding but have everyone spend a week long sabbatical studying BizTalk before starting a project that will hinge on BizTalk. The show and tell afterwards is a great way to keep everyone honest or at least reassure management that everyone is honest.    If your goal was to spend a week researching and exploring a new technology and you had to do a show and tell afterwards to show off what you had learned, then everyone can learn a bit of what you just learned.     Sounds like a promising win win for me. Maybe it is a pipe dream, but what if .... What would you work on if given the opportunity to work on anything you wanted?

• NVIDIA 550M Drivers

  First to say, I am newbie, to the linux world and in situation where i have to get used to using ubuntu. My system is: i7-2630QM 8GB Ram with 750GB HD + NVIDIa 550M (1GB) Since i was facing problems with wubi - "slow Ubuntu", i installed it on a separate partition, of 80GB (10GB Swap, 40GB HOME, 30GB ROOT). The system was running fine, before I started using some "CFD" (Graphics Dependent) application. I needed to use "paraview" a graphics software, to design some engineering stuff. Following the installation problems, i installed something called "messa" on my system. The software works but, now my system is "dead-slow". Even with the computer at an idle state, the laptop, is pretty slow, and with huge annoying fan noise. I was tried running some similar applications with windows, and it turns out that its not a hardware, but has to do with the GPU drivers. Following some forums, I installed the "nvidia-current" and now everything is the same. I know, there are many solutions on this forum for nvidia-driver updates, but as you see, nothings working my way. • Introducing the New Boot Framework in CE 7

  CE 7 introduces a new boot loader framework, BLDR (platform\common\src\common\bldr\). Some people like its powerful and flexbility, others may feel its too complicate as a boot loader framework. Despite to the favor, it is already there; so let's take a look at its features. Unlike the previous BL framwork (CE7 still provides it in platform\common\src\common\boot\) is a monolithic library, the new framework has more architecture structure. It not only defines main body but also provides rich components, such as filesystem (BinFS/FAT), download transportations, display, logging and block devices: bios INT13, FAL, IDE, Flash ( and etc. Note that in the block device category, the FAL is for legacy FMD/FAL, Flash is for latest MSFlash. Some of you may have encountered MSFlash MDD/PDD compatible partition is hard to created in bootloader and now it provides a clean solution! (Since this is a big topic, I will introduce it in future post) Today, I am going to show you some basic helper components - Image Loading functions. When OS image stored in the block device, it can be a file format, says your NK.BIN in the FAT volume or a RAW format, says the image is programmed to a BINFS partition. For the first one you can use BootFileSystemReadBinFile (platform\common\src\common\bldr\fileSystem\utils\fileSystemReadBinFile.c) and use BootBlockLoadBinFsImage (platform\common\src\common\bldr\block\utils\loadBinFs.c) to load from a partition. Need a sample code? No problem, the BootLoaderLoadOs in platform\cepc\src\boot\bldr\loados.c just provide a perfect example.

  I have WampServer 2 installed on my WinXP Pro SP3 box, Apache 2.2.11 with ssl module enabled, which runs the comnpanies intranet website. http://www.akadia.com/services/ssh_test_certificate.html gives some pointers of generating a self signed certificate. But I encounter a error while running through the example openssl genrsa -des3 -out server.key 1024 where openssl.exe is located under C:\wamp\bin\apache\Apache2.2.11\bin The error code that gets generated is 4828:error:02001015:system library:fopen:Is a directory:.\crypto\bio\bss_file.c: 126:fopen('d:/test/openssl098kvc6/openssl.cnf','rb') 4828:error:2006D002:BIO routines:BIO_new_file:system lib:.\crypto\bio\bss_file.c :131: 4828:error:0E078002:configuration file routines:DEF_LOAD:system lib:.\crypto\con f\conf_def.c:199: Where am I going wrong?

• disable 250 character URL limit in Internet Explorer

  Users of a SharePoint Document Library are getting this error: The URL for this file is too long for the application. A temporary copy of this file will be opened on your computer. You must save this copy as a new file. After doing some research, it appears Internet Explorer has a limit of about ~250 characters for a URL. Some URLs provided by SharePoint far exceed this limit. One example being 790 characters long. Is there a way to disable this limit? I have looked, but there doesnt appear to be a solution, other than shortening the folder/path names.
