  • My Optin form doesn't work in Internet Explorer, but works fine in Firefox.

    - by Allen
    I have the following code for my optin form: <script language="JavaScript"> function checkSub(){ if (document.signup.email.value.indexOf('@', 0) == -1) { alert("Please fill in your valid Email address.\nYour email should be in the following format: [email protected]"); document.signup.email.focus(); return false} else if (!document.signup.terms.checked) { alert("You must read and agree to the terms"); document.signup.terms.focus(); return false} else { switch(document.signup.extra1.value) { case "Platinum": answer = confirm("By clicking OK you confirm that you have\nalready entered the World Cup Giveaway\nas a Platinum upgrade contributor.\n\nIf you have not yet entered the giveaway\nclick Cancel.\n\nYou can enter using the link at the\nbottom of the page.\n\nIf you have already entered the giveaway\nusing a link other than my invitation link\nyou are not eligible for this offer."); if (!answer) { return false} break; case "Gold": answer = confirm("By clicking OK you confirm that you have\nalready entered the World Cup Giveaway\nas a Gold upgrade contributor.\n\nIf you have not yet entered the giveaway\nclick Cancel.\n\nYou can enter using the link at the\nbottom of the page. \n\nIf you have already entered the giveaway\nusing a link other than my invitation link\nyou are not eligible for this offer."); if (!answer) { return false} break; default: alert("You must sign up as a contributor to the \nWorld Cup Giveaway to take advantage of \nthis offer.\n\nPlease click the link at the bottom of this \npage or at the blog post mentioned below \nto sign up.\n\nIf you have already signed up using \nthis link, please select the upgrade level\nyou chose on signup or select \"Free\" if \nyou signed up as a free contributor.\n\nIf you have already entered the giveaway\nusing a link other than my invitation link\nyou are not eligible for this offer.\n\nNote: This page may not function properly\nif viewed in languages other than English."); return false} } } </script> <form action="http://ebizac.com/ar/optin.php" method="post" name="signup" onsubmit="return checkSub()"> <input type=hidden name="action" value="addlead"> <input type=hidden name="member" value="2315"> <input type=hidden name="auto" value="7584"> <input type=hidden name="thankyou" value="http://plr.forinternetnewbies.com/Offer1"> <input type=hidden name="resubsetting" value="Y"> <input type=hidden name="resubredirect" value=""> <input type=hidden name="invalid_redirect" value=""> <div style="padding:0 0 0 10px;"> <table border=0 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=2><tr><td class="label"><font size="2" face="arial, verdana">Name:</font></td><td><input type=text size=20 name="fname"></td></tr> <tr><td class="label" width="150"><font size="2" face="arial, verdana">Email address:</font></span></td><td><input type=text size=20 name="email"></td></tr> <tr><td class="label"><font size="2" face="arial, verdana">Upgrade Level:</font></td><td><select size=1 name="extra1"><option>Haven't Joined Yet</option><option>Platinum</option><option>Gold</option><option>Silver</option><option>Free</option></td></tr> <tr><td></td><td align=center><input type="checkbox" name="terms" value="agree">I agree to the terms as described on the <a href="http://short9.com/blog0522-sp" target="_blank">blog post</a> </td></tr> <tr><td></td><td align=center><input type="submit" value="Contribute Now"></td></tr></table></div></form> Everything does what I expect in Firefox, but in Internet Explorer the switch statement always goes to the default case. I tested with an extra alert(signup.extra1.value) in the default case and it shows an empty string. What could be the problem here?

  • Creating an element and insertBefore is not working...

    - by sologhost
    Ok, I've been banging my head up against the wall on this and I have no clue why it isn't creating the element. Maybe something very small that I overlooked here. Basically, there is this Javascript code that is in a PHP document being outputted, like somewhere in the middle of when the page gets loaded, NOW, unfortunately it can't go into the header. Though I'm not sure that that is the problem anyways, but perhaps it is... hmmmmm. // Setting the variables needed to be set. echo ' <script type="text/javascript" src="' . $settings['default_theme_url'] . '/scripts/dpShoutbox.js"></script>'; echo ' <script type="text/javascript"> var refreshRate = ', $params['refresh_rate'], '; createEventListener(window); window.addEventListener("load", loadShouts, false); function loadShouts() { var alldivs = document.getElementsByTagName(\'div\'); var shoutCount = 0; var divName = "undefined"; for (var i = 0; i<alldivs.length; i++) { var is_counted = 0; divName = alldivs[i].getAttribute(\'name\'); if (divName.indexOf(\'dp_Reserved_Shoutbox\') < 0 && divName.indexOf(\'dp_Reserved_Counted\') < 0) continue; else if(divName == "undefined") continue; else { if (divName.indexOf(\'dp_Reserved_Counted\') == 0) { is_counted = 0; shoutCount++; continue; } else { shoutCount++; is_counted = 1; } } // Empty out the name attr. alldivs[i].name = \'dp_Reserved_Counted\'; var shoutId = \'shoutbox_area\' + shoutCount; // Build the div to be inserted. var shoutHolder = document.createElement(\'div\'); shoutHolder.setAttribute(\'id\', [shoutId]); shoutHolder.setAttribute(\'class\', \'dp_control_flow\'); shoutHolder.style.cssText = \'padding-right: 6px;\'; alldivs[i].parentNode.insertBefore(shoutHolder, alldivs[i]); if (is_counted == 1) { startShouts(refreshRate, shoutId); break; } } } </script>'; Also, I'm sure the other functions that I'm linking to within these functions work just fine. The problem here is that within this function, the div never gets created at all and I can't understand why? Furthermore Firefox, FireBug is telling me that the variable divName is undefined, even though I have attempted to take care of this within the function, though not sure why. Anyways, I need the created div element to be inserted just before the following HTML: echo ' <div name="dp_Reserved_Shoutbox" style="padding-bottom: 9px;"></div>'; I'm using name here instead of id because I don't want duplicate id values which is why I'm changing the name value and incrementing, since this function may be called more than 1 time. For example if there are 3 shoutboxes on the same page (Don't ask why...lol), I need to skip the other names that I already changed to "dp_Reserved_Counted", which I believe I am doing correctly. In any case, if I could I would place this into the header and have it called just once, but this isn't possible as these are loaded and no way of telling which one's they are, so it's directly hard-coded into the actual output on the page of where the shoutbox is within the HTML. Basically, not sure if that is the problem or not, but there must be some sort of work-around, unless the problem is within my code above... arrg Please help me. Thanks :)

  • Why don't I just build the whole web app in Javascript and Javascript HTML Templates?

    - by viatropos
    I'm getting to the point on an app where I need to start caching things, and it got me thinking... In some parts of the app, I render table rows (jqGrid, slickgrid, etc.) or fancy div rows (like in the New Twitter) by grabbing pure JSON and running it through something like Mustache, jquery.tmpl, etc. In other parts of the app, I just render the info in pure HTML (server-side HAML templates), and if there's searching/paginating, I just go to a new URL and load a new HTML page. Now the problem is in caching and maintainability. On one hand I'm thinking, if everything was built using Javascript HTML Templates, then my app would serve just an HTML layout/shell, and a bunch of JSON. If you look at the Facebook and Twitter HTML source, that's basically what they're doing (95% json/javascript, 5% html). This would make it so my app only needed to cache JSON (pages, actions, and/or records). Which means you'd hit the cache no matter if you were some remote api developer accessing a JSON api, or the strait web app. That is, I don't need 2 caches, one for the JSON, one for the HTML. That seems like it'd cut my cache store down in half, and streamline things a little bit. On the other hand, I'm thinking, from what I've seen/experienced, generating static HTML server-side, and caching that, seems to be much better performance wise cross-browser; you get the graphics instantly and don't have to wait that split-second for javascript to render it. StackOverflow seems to do everything in plain HTML, and you can tell... everything appears at once. Notice how though on twitter.com, the page is blank for .5-1 seconds, and the page chunks in: the javascript has to render the json. The downside with this is that, for anything dynamic (like endless scrolling, or grids), I'd have to create javascript templates anyway... so now I have server-side HAML templates, client-side javascript templates, and a lot more to cache. My question is, is there any consensus on how to approach this? What are the benefits and drawbacks from your experience of mixing the two versus going 100% with one over the other? Update: Some reasons that factor into why I haven't yet made the decision to go with 100% javascript templating are: Performance. Haven't formally tested, but from what I've seen, raw html renders faster and more fluidly than javascript-generated html cross-browser. Plus, I'm not sure how mobile devices handle dynamic html performance-wise. Testing. I have a lot of integration tests that work well with static HTML, so switching to javascript-only would require 1) more focused pure-javascript testing (jasmine), and 2) integrating javascript into capybara integration tests. This is just a matter of time and work, but it's probably significant. Maintenance. Getting rid of HAML. I love HAML, it's so easy to write, it prints pretty HTML... It makes code clean, it makes maintenance easy. Going with javascript, there's nothing as concise. SEO. I know google handles the ajax /#!/path, but haven't grasped how this will affect other search engines and how older browsers handle it. Seems like it'd require a significant setup.

  • Rails destroy confirm with Jquery AJAX

    - by Mike
    I have got this working for the most part. My rails link is: <%= link_to(image_tag('/images/bin.png', :alt => 'Remove'), @business, :class => 'delete', :confirm => 'Are you sure?', :id => 'trash') %> :class = "delete" is calling an ajax function so that it is deleted and the page isn't refreshed that works great. But because the page doesn't refresh, it is still there. So my id trash is calling this jquery function: $('[id^=trash]').click(function(){ var row = $(this).closest("tr").get(0); $(row).hide(); return false; }); Which is hiding the row of whatever trash icon i clicked on. This also works great. I thought I had it all worked out and then I hit this problem. When you click on my trash can I have this confirm box pop up to ask you if you are sure. Regardless of whether you choose cancel or accept, the jquery fires and it hides the row. It isn't deleted, only hidden till you refresh the page. I tried changing it so that the prompt is done through jquery, but then rails was deleteing the row regardless of what i choose in my prompt because the .destroy function was being called when the prompt was being called. My question really is how can i get the value to cancel or accept from the rails confirm pop up so that in my jquery I can have an if statement that hides if they click accept and does nothing if they click cancel. EDIT: Answering Question below. That did not work. I tried changing my link to: <%= link_to(image_tag('/images/bin.png', :alt => 'Remove'), @business, :class => "delete", :onclick => "trash") %> and putting this in my jquery function trash(){ if(confirm("Are you sure?")){ var row = $(this).closest("tr").get(0); $(row).hide(); return false; } else { //they clicked no. } } But the function was never called. It just deletes it with no prompt and doesn't hide it. But that gave me an idea. I took the delete function that ajax was calling $('a.delete').click (function(){ $.post(this.href, {_method:'delete'}, null, "script"); $(row).hide(); }); And modified it implementing your code: remove :confirm = 'Are you sure?' $('a.delete').click (function(){ if(confirm("Are you sure?")){ var row = $(this).closest("tr").get(0); $.post(this.href, {_method:'delete'}, null, "script"); $(row).hide(); return false; } else { //they clicked no. return false; } }); Which does the trick.

  • How to allow multiple filters to be selected - pagination?

    - by NewSOuser
    Hey, I am still trying to allow multiple filters to be selected for my pagination script but not sure how to do it being very new to php and programing in general. So in my pagination, when a user clicks the 'marketing' button(link) it queries the database just for the category that = marketing. The same goes for the other 2 filter buttons as seen in the script below. (automotive, sports). The problem is, I want to be able to select multiple filters like only marketing and auomotive or automotive and sports, for example if I click the marketing filter and then the automotive, it would display the categories that equal marketing, and automotive. I have no idea how to accomplish this, so I have come to the experts to help me out. This is the script I am working on: <h3>Filter results by:</h3> <a href='pagi_test.php?category=marketing'>marketing</a> <a href='pagi_test.php?category=automotive'>automotive</a> <a href='pagi_test.php?category=sports'>sports</a> <br /> <h3>Results:</h3> <?php //connecting to the database $error = "Could not connect to the database"; mysql_connect('localhost','root','root') or die($error); mysql_select_db('ajax_demo') or die($error); //max displayed per page $per_page = 3; //get start variable $start = $_GET['start']; $category = mysql_real_escape_string($_GET['category']); //count records $record_count = mysql_num_rows(mysql_query("SELECT * FROM explore WHERE category='$category'")); //count max pages $max_pages = $record_count / $per_page; //may come out as decimal if (!$start) $start = 0; //display data $get = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM explore WHERE category='$category' LIMIT $start, $per_page"); ?> <table width="800px"> <?php while ($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($get)) { // get data $id = $row['id']; $site_name = $row['site_name']; $site_description = $row['site_description']; ?> <tr> <td><?php echo $id; ?></td> <td><?php echo $site_name; ?></td> <td><?php echo $site_description; ?></td> </tr> <?php } //setup prev and next variables $prev = $start - $per_page; $next = $start + $per_page; //show prev button if (!($start<=0)) echo "<a href='pagi_test.php?category=$category&start=$prev'>Prev</a> "; //show page numbers //set variable for first page $i=1; for ($x=0;$x<$record_count;$x=$x+$per_page) { if ($start!=$x) echo " <a href='pagi_test.php?category=$category&start=$x'>$i</a> "; else echo " <a href='pagi_test.php?category=$category&start=$x'><b>$i</b></a> "; $i++; } //show next button if (!($start>=$record_count-$per_page)) echo " <a href='pagi_test.php?category=$category&start=$next'>Next</a>"; ?> Any help on this would be great. Thank you. -- EDIT -- If anyone has a better method of doing a pagination system with multiple filters than the one above, please let me know.

  • What's wrong with this jQuery? It isn't working as intended

    - by Doug Smith
    Using cookies, I want it to remember the colour layout of the page. (So, if they set the gallery one color and the body background another color, it will save that on refresh. But it doesn't seem to be working. jQuery: $(document).ready(function() { if (verifier == 1) { $('body').css('background', $.cookie('test_cookie')); } if (verifier == 2) { $('#gallery').css('background', $.cookie('test_cookie')); } if (verifier == 3) { $('body').css('background', $.cookie('test_cookie')); $('#gallery').css('background', $.cookie('test_cookie')); } $('#set_cookie').click(function() { var color = $('#set_cookie').val(); $.cookie('test_cookie', color); }); $('#set_page').click(function() { $('body').css('background', $.cookie('test_cookie')); var verifier = 1; }); $('#set_gallery').click(function() { $('#gallery').css('background', $.cookie('test_cookie')); var verifier = 2; }); $('#set_both').click(function() { $('body').css('background', $.cookie('test_cookie')); $('#gallery').css('background', $.cookie('test_cookie')); var verifier = 3; }); }); HTML: <p>Please select a background color for either the page's background, the gallery's background, or both.</p> <select id="set_cookie"> <option value="#1d375a" selected="selected">Default</option> <option value="black">Black</option> <option value="blue">Blue</option> <option value="brown">Brown</option> <option value="darkblue">Dark Blue</option> <option value="darkgreen">Dark Green</option> <option value="darkred">Dark Red</option> <option value="fuchsia">Fuchsia</option> <option value="green">Green</option> <option value="grey">Grey</option> <option value="#d3d3d3">Light Grey</option> <option value="#32cd32">Lime Green</option> <option value="#f8b040">Macaroni</option> <option value="#ff7300">Orange</option> <option value="pink">Pink</option> <option value="purple">Purple</option> <option value="red">Red</option> <option value="#0fcce0">Turquoise</option> <option value="white">White</option> <option value="yellow">Yellow</option> </select> <input type="button" id="set_page" value="Page's Background" /><input type="button" id="set_gallery" value="Gallery's Background" /><input type="button" id="set_both" value="Both" /> </div> </div> </body> </html> Thanks so much for the help, I appreciate it. jsFiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/hL6Ye/

  • What broke in this Javascript 1.2 snippet?

    - by Rob Kelley
    A friend has pointed me to his old website and says "the submit form just stopped working a while ago. I'm sure it's something simple." The form asks a child for a certain word from a book, and based on the answer, it should redirect the child to a success page or a failure page. It's using Javascript 1.2, circa 2001. You can see this form in in-action at: http://www.secrethidingplaces.com/login1.html Any idea why it's failing? The HTML does this: <script src="password.js" type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript1.2"> </script> <script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript1.2"> <!-- function showRightPage () { return window.location.href = "extra.html" ; } function showWrongPage () { return window.location.href = "sorry2.html" ; } //--> </script> and then this: document.write ( '<form name="questionForm" action="javascript:checkAnswer()" method="post">' ) ; ... document.write ( '<input type="text" name="userAnswer" value="" size="90">' ) ; document.write ( '<INPUT TYPE="image" NAME="submit" SRC="stock/btn_send.gif" width="121" height="41" BORDER="0" ALT="submit">' ) ; document.write ( '\</p>' ) ; document.write ( '\</form>' ) ; I'm assuming there's something ugly in CheckAnswer from ./password.js . I can hack the form to bypass that javascript and go straight to the success page: document.write ( '<form name="questionForm" action="extra.html" method="post">' ) ; but I'd like to help my friend get his kids site working again. The CheckAnswer function is below. Is something going wrong in here? function checkAnswer () { currentAnswer = answersArray [ choiceNumber ] ; if (agt.indexOf("msie") != -1) { rawAnswer = document.questionForm.userAnswer.value ; } else { rawAnswer = document.callThis.document.questionForm.userAnswer.value ; } lcAnswer = rawAnswer.toLowerCase ( ) ; includedAnswer = lcAnswer.indexOf ( "currentAnswer" ) ; zadaAnswer = lcAnswer.indexOf ( "zada" ) ; brendanAnswer = lcAnswer.indexOf ( "brendan" ) ; nineAnswer = lcAnswer.indexOf ( "nine" ) ; thirtyAnswer = lcAnswer.indexOf ( "thirty" ) ; if ( choiceNumber == 0 ) { if ( includedAnswer == -1 && zadaAnswer == -1 && brendanAnswer == -1 ) { checked = "wrong" ; } } if ( choiceNumber == 8 ) { if ( includedAnswer == -1 && zadaAnswer == -1 && nineAnswer == -1 ) { checked = "wrong" ; } } if ( choiceNumber == 16 ) { if ( includedAnswer == -1 && zadaAnswer == -1 && thirtyAnswer == -1 ) { checked = "wrong" ; } } if ( choiceNumber != 0 && choiceNumber != 8 && choiceNumber != 16 ) { if ( includedAnswer == -1 && zadaAnswer == -1 ) { checked = "wrong" ; } } if ( checked == "wrong" ) { showWrongPage () ; } else { showRightPage () ; } } Thanks!

  • PHP script causes segmentation fault then the browser asks me to download the .php file with nothing in it?

    - by John
    I've noticed an unusual problem with some of my php programs. Sometimes when visiting a page like profile.edit.php, the browser throws a dialogue box asking to download profile.edit.php page. When I download it, there's nothing in the file. profile.edit.php is supposed to be a web form that edits user information. I've noticed this on some of my other php pages as well. I look in my apache error logs, and I see a segmentation fault message: [Mon Mar 08 15:40:10 2010] [notice] child pid 480 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) And also, the issue may or may not appear depending on which server I deploy my application too. Additonal Details This doesn't happen all the time though. It only happens sometimes. For example, profile.edit.php will load properly. But as soon as I hit the save button (form action="profile.edit.php?save=true"), then the page asks me to download profile.edit.php. Could it be that sometimes my php scripts consume too much resources? Sample code Upon save action, my profile.edit.php includes a data_access_object.php file. I traced the code in data_access_object.php to this line here if($params[$this->primaryKey]) { $q = "UPDATE $this->tableName SET ".implode(', ', $fields)." WHERE ".$this->primaryKey." = ?$this->primaryKey"; $this->bind($this->primaryKey, $params[$this->primaryKey], $this->tblFields[$this->primaryKey]['mysqlitype']); } else { $q = "INSERT $this->tableName SET ".implode(', ', $fields); } // Code executes perfectly up to this point // echo 'print this'; exit; // if i uncomment this line, profile.edit.php will actually show 'print this'. If I leave it commented, the browser will ask me to download profile.edit.php if(!$this->execute($q)){ $this->errorSave = -3; return false;} // When I jumped into the function execute(), every line executed as expected, right up to the return statement. And if it helps, here's the function execute($sql) in data_access_object.php function execute($sql) { // find all list types and explode them // eg. turn ?listId into ?listId0,?listId1,?listId2 $arrListParam = array_bubble_up('arrayName', $this->arrBind); foreach($arrListParam as $listName) if($listName) { $explodeParam = array(); $arrList = $this->arrBind[$listName]['value']; foreach($arrList as $key=>$val) { $newParamName = $listName.$key; $this->bind($newParamName,$val,$this->arrBind[$listName]['type']); $explodeParam[] = '?'.$newParamName; } $sql = str_replace("?$listName", implode(',',$explodeParam), $sql); } // replace all ?varName with ? for syntax compliance $sqlParsed = preg_replace('/\?[\w\d_\.]+/', '?', $sql); $this->stmt->prepare($sqlParsed); // grab all the parameters from the sql to create bind conditions preg_match_all('/\?[\w\d_\.]+/', $sql, $matches); $matches = $matches[0]; // store bind conditions $types = ''; $params = array(); foreach($matches as $paramName) { $types .= $this->arrBind[str_replace('?', '', $paramName)]['type']; $params[] = $this->arrBind[str_replace('?', '', $paramName)]['value']; } $input = array('types'=>$types) + $params; // bind it if(!empty($types)) call_user_func_array(array($this->stmt, 'bind_param'), $input); $stat = $this->stmt->execute(); if($GLOBALS['DEBUG_SQL']) echo '<p style="font-weight:bold;">SQL error after execution:</p> ' . $this->stmt->error.'<p>&nbsp;</p>'; $this->arrBind = array(); return $stat; }

  • Sending Javascript variables.

    - by shinjuo
    I have a page that allows a user to choose some things in a form and it will calculate the weight using javascript. It breaks it up into 5 variables that I need to send to another page. Originally I was just having it put the variable into a text box and then I was posting that text box. However I dont want to have 5 text boxes. So now I need to somehow send or post the five variables to another page. Here is my javascript function. I need to post weightBoxOne - weightBoxFive js function function getWeight(){ var weightBoxOne; var weightBoxTwo; var totalWeight; var box = .5; var quantity = document.dhform.quantity.value; var cardSize = document.dhform.cardSize.value; if(cardSize == 0.0141){ if(quantity <= 1000){ weightBoxOne = (quantity * cardSize) + box; totalWeight = weightBoxOne; }else if(quantity > 1000 && quantity <= 2000){ weightBoxOne = (1000 * cardSize) + box; weightBoxTwo = ((quantity - 1000) * cardSize) + box; totalWeight = weightBoxOne + weightBoxTwo; }else if(quantity > 2000 && quantity <= 3000){ weightBoxOne = (1000 * cardSize) + box; weightBoxTwo = (1000 * cardSize) + box; weightBoxThree = ((quantity - 2000) * cardSize) + box; totalWeight = weightBoxOne + weightBoxTwo + weightBoxThree; }else if(quantity > 3000 && quantity <= 4000){ weightBoxOne = (1000 * cardSize) + box; weightBoxTwo = (1000 * cardSize) + box; weightBoxThree = (1000 * cardSize) + box; weightBoxFour = ((quantity - 3000) * cardSize) + box; totalWeight = weightBoxOne + weightBoxTwo + weightBoxThree + weightBoxFour; }else{ weightBoxOne = (1000 * cardSize) + box; weightBoxTwo = (1000 * cardSize) + box; weightBoxThree = (1000 * cardSize) + box; weightBoxFour = (1000 * cardSize) + box; weightBoxFive = ((quantity - 4000) * cardSize) + box; totalWeight = weightBoxOne + weightBoxTwo + weightBoxThree + weightBoxFour + weightBoxFive; } }else if(cardSize == 0.00949){ if(quantity <= 4000){ weightBoxOne = (quantity * cardSize) + box; totalWeight = weightBoxOne; }else{ weightBoxOne = (4000 * cardSize) + box; weightBoxTwo = ((quantity - 4000) * cardSize) + box; totalWeight = weightBoxOne + weightBoxTwo; } } document.rates.weight.value = totalWeight; } //--> this is the form that was originally posting <form action="getRates.php" name="rates" method="post" onSubmit="popupform(this, 'join')"> <table style="width: 216px"> <tr> <td style="width: 115px; height: 49px;"><span class="style16">Weight</span><br/> <input type="text" id="weight" name="weight" size="10" maxlength="4"/> </td> <td align="right" style="width: 68px; height: 49px;" valign="top"><span class="style16">Zip Code</span><br/> <input type="text" id="zip" name="zip" size="10" maxlength="5"/> </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="width: 115px"> <input name="submit" type="submit" value="Get Rate Costs" style="width: 138px" />

  • Unable to Use Simple JSOUP Example To Parse Website Table Data

    - by OhNoItsAnOverflow
    I'm attempting to extract the following data from a table via Android / JSOUP however I'm having a bit of trouble nailing down the process. I think I'm getting close to being able to do this using the code I've provided below - but for some reason I still cannot get my textview to display any of the table data. P.S. Live URL's can be provided if necessary. SOURCE: public class MainActivity extends Activity { TextView tv; final String URL = "http://exampleurl.com"; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.activity_main); tv = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.TextView01); new MyTask().execute(URL); } private class MyTask extends AsyncTask<String, Void, String> { ProgressDialog prog; String title = ""; @Override protected void onPreExecute() { prog = new ProgressDialog(MainActivity.this); prog.setMessage("Loading...."); prog.show(); } @Override protected String doInBackground(String... params) { try { Document doc = Jsoup.connect(params[0]).get(); Element tableElement = doc.getElementsByClass("datagrid") .first(); title = doc.title(); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } return title; } @Override protected void onPostExecute(String result) { super.onPostExecute(result); prog.dismiss(); tv.setText(result); } } } TABLE: <table class="datagrid"> <tbody><tr> <th>Item No.</th> <th>Name</th> <th>Sex</th> <th>Location</th> </tr> <tr> <td><a href="redirector.cfm?ID=a33660a3-aae0-45e3-9703-d59d77717836&amp;page=1&amp;&amp;lname=&amp;fname=" title="501207593">501207593&nbsp;</a></td> <td>USER1</td> <td>M&nbsp;</td> <td>Unknown</td> </tr> <tr> <td><a href="redirector.cfm?ID=edf524da-8598-450f-9373-da87db8d6c84&amp;page=1&amp;&amp;lname=&amp;fname=" title="501302750">501302750&nbsp;</a></td> <td>USER2</td> <td>M&nbsp;</td> <td>Unknown</td> </tr> <tr> <td><a href="redirector.cfm?ID=a78abeea-7651-4ac1-bba2-0dcb272c8b77&amp;page=1&amp;&amp;lname=&amp;fname=" title="531201804">531201804&nbsp;</a></td> <td>USER3</td> <td>M&nbsp;</td> <td>Unknown</td> </tr> </tbody></table>

  • How to resolve strange conflict between form post and ajax post?

    - by Oliver Hyde
    On the one page, I am trying to use ajax to edit existing values. I am doing this by using jQuery Inline Edit and posting away the new data, updating the record and returning with success. This is working fine. Next I have implemented the ability to add new records, to do this I have a form at the end of the table, which submits post data then redirects back to the original page. Each of them work individually, but after I have used the form to add a new record, the inline editing stops to work. If I close the webpage and reopen it, it works fine again until I have used the form and it goes of the rails again. I have tried a number of solutions, clearing session data, giving the form a separate name, redirecting to an alternative page (which does work, but is not ideal as I want the form to redirect back to the original location ). Here is a sample of the view form data: <?php foreach($week->incomes as $income):?> <tr> <td><?php echo $income->name;?></td> <td width="70" style="text-align:right;" class="editableSingle income id<?php echo $income->id;?>">$<?php echo $income->cost;?></td> </tr> <?php endforeach;?> <?php echo form_open('budget/add/'.$week->id.'/income/index', 'class="form-vertical" id="add_income"'); ?> <tr> <td> <input type="text" name="name" class="input-small" placeholder="Name"> <input type="text" name="cost" class="input-small" placeholder="Cost"> </td> <td> <button type="submit" class="btn btn-small pull-right"><i class="icon-plus "></i></button> </td> </tr> <?php echo form_close(); ?> This is the javascript initialisation code: $(function(){ $.inlineEdit({ income: 'budget/update_income/', expense: 'budget/update_expense/' }, { animate: false, filterElementValue: function($o){ if ($o.hasClass('income')) { return $o.html().match(/\$(.+)/)[1]; } else if ($o.hasClass('expense')) { return $o.html().match(/\$(.+)/)[1]; } else { return $o.html(); } }, afterSave: function(o){ if (o.type == 'income') { $('.income.id' + o.id).prepend('$'); } if (o.type == 'expense') { $('.expense.id' + o.id).prepend('$'); } }, colors: { error:'green' } }); }); If I can provide any more information to clarify what I have attempted etc, let me know. Temporary Fix It seems I have come up with a work around, not ideal as I still am not sure what is causing the issue. I have created a method called redirect. public function redirect(){ redirect(''); } am now calling that after the form submit which has temporarily allows my multiple post submits to work.

    Is there a way to get the text in a dynamic way from a certain <tr> tag in the page? e.g. I've a page with a <tr> with the value "a1". I'd like to get only the text from this <tr> tag, and echo it into the page. is this possible? here is the HTML: <html><tr id='ieconn2' > <td><table width='100%'><tr><td valign='top'><table width='100%'><tr><td><script type="text/javascript"><!-- google_ad_client = "pub-4503439170693445"; /* 300x250, created 7/21/10 */ google_ad_slot = "7608120147"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; //--> </script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js"> </script><br>When Marshall and Lily fear they will never get pregnant, they see a specialist who can hopefully help move the process along. • Why does jQuery's $().each() function seem to be losing track of the DOM?

    - by Nate Wagar
    I've recently started encountering a very strange problem. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure how to describe it other than to just show it. Here's the relevant HTML: <div class="component container w100 noEdit" id="contentWrapper"> <div class="component container w50" id="container1"> <div class="component text w50" id="text1"> Text1 </div> </div> <div class="component container w25" id="container2"> Container2 </div> <div class="component container w25" id="container3"> Container3 </div> <div class="component container w25" id="container4"> Container4 </div> </div> And the relevant JavaScript: $(document).ready(function () { //Add the Grab Bar to container components on the page. $('.component').each(wrapComponentForEdit); $('#contentWrapper').sortable(); $('#contentWrapper').disableSelection(); }); var wrapComponentForEdit = function() { if (!$(this).hasClass('noEdit')) { $(this).html('<div class="componentBorder">' + $(this).html() + '</div>'); $(this).prepend('<div class="grabBar_l"><div class="grabBar_r"><div class="grabBar"></div></div></div>'); alert($(this).attr('id')); } } The end result of this is that I see an alert pop up for container1, text1, container2, container3, container 4. And yet only the containers (not the text) end up with the visual changes that the $().each() is supposed to make. Anyone have any idea what the heck is going on? Thanks! EDIT - A different way to do it, that still fails I tried this, with the same result: $(document).ready(function () { //Add the Grab Bar to container components on the page. var matched = $('.component'); var componentCount = $(matched).size(); for (i = 0; i < componentCount; i++) { wrapComponentForEdit($(matched).eq(i)); } $('#contentWrapper').sortable({ handle: '.grabBarBit', tolerance: 'pointer'}); $('#contentWrapper').disableSelection(); }); var wrapComponentForEdit = function(component) { if (!$(component).hasClass('noEdit')) { $(component).html('<div class="grabBar_l grabBarBit"><div class="grabBar_r grabBarBit"><div class="grabBar grabBarBit"></div></div></div><div class="componentBorder">' + $(component).html() + '</div>'); alert($(component).attr('id')); } } EDIT 2: Another alternate method, but this one works I tried another way of doing things, and this way it works. However, the initial question still stands. Judging by how this new way works, it seems to me that the DOM is being updated, but jQuery isn't updating with it, so it loses track of the child element. $(document).ready(function () { //Add the Grab Bar to container components on the page. var componentCount = $('.component').size(); for (i = 0; i < componentCount; i++) { wrapComponentForEdit($('.component').eq(i)); } $('#contentWrapper').sortable({ handle: '.grabBarBit', tolerance: 'pointer'}); $('#contentWrapper').disableSelection(); }); var wrapComponentForEdit = function(component) { if (!$(component).hasClass('noEdit')) { $(component).html('<div class="grabBar_l grabBarBit"><div class="grabBar_r grabBarBit"><div class="grabBar grabBarBit"></div></div></div><div class="componentBorder">' + $(component).html() + '</div>'); alert($(component).attr('id')); } }

  • jQuery code not working in Google Chrome...

    - by Jonathan
    Hi, I have writen a simple jQuery code to control ajax tabs navigation.. Its working in good on FireFox but in Chrome it working in one page but not in the home page I don't know why... Its really simple code just a lot of animations and callbacks and stuff like that.. here's the code: jQuery.fn.tabs = function({movieID, movieTitle}) { var tabsWrap = '#movie_details_wrap'; var tabsContent = '#tab_content'; var firstTab = '#tab_detalles'; var postPHP = 'index.php?controlador=pelicula'; //When page loads... first tab actions $('ul.tabs_nav a:first').addClass('active'); //Activate first tab nav $.get(postPHP, {"activeTab": firstTab, "movieID": movieID}, function(response){ $(tabsContent).html(response); // insert response into the faded out div $(tabsWrap).animate({ // animate the wrap div using the new container div height height: $(tabsContent).height() + "px" }, function() { $(tabsContent).fadeIn(); // fade in the div with all the info }); }); //On Click Event $('ul.tabs_nav li').click(function() { $('ul.tabs_nav a').removeClass('active'); //Remove any 'active' class $(this).find('a').addClass('active'); //Add 'active' class to selected tab var activeTab = $(this).find('a').attr('href'); //Find the href attribute value to identify the active tab + content var orgHeight = $(tabsContent).height() + 'px'; // get original height $(tabsWrap).css('height', orgHeight); // set height with css to freeze the wrap div when we hide the inner div $(tabsContent).fadeOut(200, function() { // fade out the inner div // send data by ajax (post) $.get(postPHP, {"activeTab": activeTab, "movieID": movieID , "movieTitle": movieTitle}, function(response){ $(tabsContent).html(response); // insert response into the faded out div $(tabsWrap).animate({ // animate the wrap div using the new container div height height: $(tabsContent).height() + "px" }, function() { $(tabsContent).fadeIn(); // fade in the div with all the info }); }); }); return false; }); }; Here's the HTML: <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function(){ $('.tabs_nav').tabs({movieID:'135353', movieTitle: 'Some Title'}); }); </script> <!--Navigation--> <ul id="details_nav" class="tabs_nav"> <li><a href="#tab_detalles">Detalles</a></li> <li><a href="#tab_criticas">Criticas</a></li> <li><a href="#tab_posters">Posters</a></li> <li><a href="#tab_trailers">Trailers</a></li> </ul> <div class="border_wrap"> <div id="movie_details_wrap"> <div id="tab_content"> <!--Tabs content here--> </div> </div> </div>

  • Repeater not repeating :0) (asp.net)(vb)

    - by Phil
    Morning stackoverflow, I have a repeater, with the following code in my aspx page; <asp:Repeater ID="Contactinforepeater" runat="server"> <HeaderTemplate> <h1>Contact Information</h1> </HeaderTemplate> <ItemTemplate> <table width="50%"> <tr> <td colspan="2"><%#Container.DataItem("position")%></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Name:</td> <td><%#Container.DataItem("surname")%></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Telephone:</td> <td><%#Container.DataItem("telephone")%></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Fax:</td> <td><%#Container.DataItem("fax")%></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Email:</td> <td><%#Container.DataItem("email")%></td> </tr> </table> </ItemTemplate> <SeparatorTemplate> <br /><hr /><br /> </SeparatorTemplate> </asp:Repeater> Then I have this code in my aspx.vb to get the data; If did = 0 Then s = "sql works on db server" x = New SqlCommand(s, c) x.Parameters.Add("@contentid", Data.SqlDbType.Int) x.Parameters("@contentid").Value = contentid c.Open() r = x.ExecuteReader r.Read() Contactinforepeater.DataSource = r Contactinforepeater.DataBind() End If c.Close() r.Close() If Not did = 0 Then s = "sql works on db server" x = New SqlCommand(s, c) x.Parameters.Add("@contentid", SqlDbType.Int) x.Parameters("@contentid").Value = contentid x.Parameters.Add("@did", SqlDbType.Int) x.Parameters("@did").Value = did c.Open() r = x.ExecuteReader r.Read() Contactinforepeater.DataSource = r Contactinforepeater.DataBind() End If r.Close() c.Close() If 'did' is or is not '0' I still get no data outputted to the page. I just get the 'contact information' h1 header from the header template. I've tested the value of s in sqlsms and it works fine. Position, surname, telephone, fax, email all exist in the db. The particular page I am checking exists and has 1 set of contact information attached. Where am I going wrong? Thanks! ps. Does my syntax appear correct? pps. I am also open to different ways of achieving the same result. I tried via an sqldatasource but ran into problems when using variables as params (there is no option to select them, only controls, querystring etc)

  • Why does "return ERROR" only work with exceptions?

    - by ThreaT
    In the struts.xml I use: <result name="error">error</result> Then in my action I use: addActionError("ERROR RETURNED"); return ERROR; When I submit the form then it just goes to a blank page and does nothing. However, if I FORCE an exception to be thrown in the action then it goes to the error page and shows the ActionError message. So am I doing this wrong? If so, how should I tell struts to show an error page using "if statements" instead of relying solely on expensive try catches? EDIT 1: I'm using struts 2 version: 2.1.8.1 EDIT 2: For example, here is my action code that I'm using to test: String test = ""; int number = 0; try { if (number == 1) { System.out.println("number 1: " + number); test = SUCCESS; } else if (number == 2) { System.out.println("number 2: " + number); addActionError("ERROR RETURNED?"); addActionMessage("TESTTEST"); test = ERROR; } else if (number == 3) { System.out.println("number 3: " + number); addActionError("ERROR RETURNED?"); addActionMessage("TESTTEST"); test = INPUT; } else { System.out.println("number 4: " + number); test = LOGIN; } } catch (Exception e) { addActionError("ERROR RETURNED? " + e); } return test; And here is my JSP code: <s:form action="number_save" method="post"> <s:textfield name="number" label="Enter number" /> </s:form> <s:actionerror /> <s:fielderror /> <s:actionmessage /> EDIT 3: Here is a longer version of my struts.xml: <action name="number" method="numberCreate" class="NumberActionBean"> <result>number.jsp</result> </action> <action name="error"> <result>error.jsp</result> </action> <action name="number_save" method="numberSave" class="NumberActionBean"> <interceptor-ref name="defaultStack"></interceptor-ref> <result name="success" type="redirect">index</result> <result name="input" type="redirect">number</result> <result name="error">error</result> <result name="login" type="redirect">login</result> <result name="none">number</result> </action> EDIT 4: My error.jsp is simply a <s:actionerror /> tag with the general taglibs and html tags...

  • Squid + Dans Guardian (simple configuration)

    - by The Digital Ninja
    I just built a new proxy server and compiled the latest versions of squid and dansguardian. We use basic authentication to select what users are allowed outside of our network. It seems squid is working just fine and accepts my username and password and lets me out. But if i connect to dans guardian, it prompts for username and password and then displays a message saying my username is not allowed to access the internet. Its pulling my username for the error message so i know it knows who i am. The part i get confused on is i thought that part was handled all by squid, and squid is working flawlessly. Can someone please double check my config files and tell me if i'm missing something or there is some new option i must set to get this to work. dansguardian.conf # Web Access Denied Reporting (does not affect logging) # # -1 = log, but do not block - Stealth mode # 0 = just say 'Access Denied' # 1 = report why but not what denied phrase # 2 = report fully # 3 = use HTML template file (accessdeniedaddress ignored) - recommended # reportinglevel = 3 # Language dir where languages are stored for internationalisation. # The HTML template within this dir is only used when reportinglevel # is set to 3. "FamilyInfo/Fields"; parentElement = rootElement.XPathSelectElement(xPathQuery); txtGallantryHistory.Text = parentElement.Element("GallantryHistory").Attribute("value").Value; txtEthinicity.Text = parentElement.Element("Ethinicity").Attribute("value").Value; txtKulDev.Text = parentElement.Element("KulDev").Attribute("value").Value; txtKulDevi.Text = parentElement.Element("KulDevi").Attribute("value").Value; txtCaste.Text = parentElement.Element("Caste").Attribute("value").Value; ddlSunsign.SelectedValue = parentElement.Element("SunSignId").Attribute("value").Value; ddlSunsign.SelectedItem.Text = parentElement.Element("SunSignName").Attribute("value").Value; } private XElement UpdateFamilyInfoXML(XElement rootElement) { XElement parentElement; string xPathQuery = "FamilyInfo/Fields"; parentElement = rootElement.XPathSelectElement(xPathQuery); parentElement.Element("GallantryHistory").Attribute("value").Value = txtGallantryHistory.Text; parentElement.Element("Ethinicity").Attribute("value").Value = txtEthinicity.Text; parentElement.Element("KulDev").Attribute("value").Value = txtKulDev.Text; parentElement.Element("KulDevi").Attribute("value").Value = txtKulDevi.Text; parentElement.Element("Caste").Attribute("value").Value = txtCaste.Text; parentElement.Element("SunSignId").Attribute("value").Value = ddlSunsign.SelectedItem.Value; parentElement.Element("SunSignName").Attribute("value").Value = ddlSunsign.SelectedItem.Text; parentElement.Element("ModifiedBy").Attribute("value").Value = UMSession.CurrentLoggedInUser.UserId.ToString(); parentElement.Element("ModifiedOn").Attribute("value").Value = System.DateTime.Now.ToString(); return rootElement; //rootElement.XPathSelectElement(xPathQuery) = parentElement; } these 2 functions i have used to update xml and to get data from xml and fill into controls. but for the tags where there are multiple records... i am not able to find any solution /control using which i an do it easily. coz my field's value is in attribute named "Value" when in the examples i saw its between opening and closing tag.. i have 2 methods to do so. 1 . i make one page to edit a single record and pass id of record to that page on editing. open the page in iframe on same page to edit and in page_load get data from database for id passed and fill it in control. 2 . i store xml on server as physical file and use it in page i opened in iframe to edit the record. so i am confused... can anybody please guide me that what shpould i do to let user provide interface to edit this xml data/user profile ?

  • Why is this unwanted ">" character being displayed when displaying this PHP document in a browser?

    - by CT
    This page takes an asset id from $_GET of the url and displays some info about the asset after querying a mysql database. When I view the page in my browser there is an unwanted "" character within the page and I have no idea why. I've commented where it appears. It appears before the < table create tag right afterward. The < table tag was originally outside the php script section but I threw it in to see if it made a difference. It did not. Thank you all. I am viewing the page in Firefox. The web server is running on an Ubuntu Server 10.04 virtual machine on my laptop. <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; • An Introduction to ASP.NET Web API

    - by Rick Strahl
    Microsoft recently released ASP.NET MVC 4.0 and .NET 4.5 and along with it, the brand spanking new ASP.NET Web API. Web API is an exciting new addition to the ASP.NET stack that provides a new, well-designed HTTP framework for creating REST and AJAX APIs (API is Microsoft’s new jargon for a service, in case you’re wondering). Although Web API ships and installs with ASP.NET MVC 4, you can use Web API functionality in any ASP.NET project, including WebForms, WebPages and MVC or just a Web API by itself. And you can also self-host Web API in your own applications from Console, Desktop or Service applications. If you're interested in a high level overview on what ASP.NET Web API is and how it fits into the ASP.NET stack you can check out my previous post: Where does ASP.NET Web API fit? In the following article, I'll focus on a practical, by example introduction to ASP.NET Web API. All the code discussed in this article is available in GitHub: https://github.com/RickStrahl/AspNetWebApiArticle [republished from my Code Magazine Article and updated for RTM release of ASP.NET Web API] Getting Started To start I’ll create a new empty ASP.NET application to demonstrate that Web API can work with any kind of ASP.NET project. Although you can create a new project based on the ASP.NET MVC/Web API template to quickly get up and running, I’ll take you through the manual setup process, because one common use case is to add Web API functionality to an existing ASP.NET application. This process describes the steps needed to hook up Web API to any ASP.NET 4.0 application. Start by creating an ASP.NET Empty Project. Then create a new folder in the project called Controllers. Add a Web API Controller Class Once you have any kind of ASP.NET project open, you can add a Web API Controller class to it. Web API Controllers are very similar to MVC Controller classes, but they work in any kind of project. Add a new item to this folder by using the Add New Item option in Visual Studio and choose Web API Controller Class, as shown in Figure 1. Figure 1: This is how you create a new Controller Class in Visual Studio   Make sure that the name of the controller class includes Controller at the end of it, which is required in order for Web API routing to find it. Here, the name for the class is AlbumApiController. For this example, I’ll use a Music Album model to demonstrate basic behavior of Web API. The model consists of albums and related songs where an album has properties like Name, Artist and YearReleased and a list of songs with a SongName and SongLength as well as an AlbumId that links it to the album. You can find the code for the model (and the rest of these samples) on Github. To add the file manually, create a new folder called Model, and add a new class Album.cs and copy the code into it. There’s a static AlbumData class with a static CreateSampleAlbumData() method that creates a short list of albums on a static .Current that I’ll use for the examples. Before we look at what goes into the controller class though, let’s hook up routing so we can access this new controller. Hooking up Routing in Global.asax To start, I need to perform the one required configuration task in order for Web API to work: I need to configure routing to the controller. Like MVC, Web API uses routing to provide clean, extension-less URLs to controller methods. Using an extension method to ASP.NET’s static RouteTable class, you can use the MapHttpRoute() (in the System.Web.Http namespace) method to hook-up the routing during Application_Start in global.asax.cs shown in Listing 1.using System; using System.Web.Routing; using System.Web.Http; namespace AspNetWebApi { public class Global : System.Web.HttpApplication { protected void Application_Start(object sender, EventArgs e) { RouteTable.Routes.MapHttpRoute( name: "AlbumVerbs", routeTemplate: "albums/{title}", defaults: new { symbol = RouteParameter.Optional, controller="AlbumApi" } ); } } } This route configures Web API to direct URLs that start with an albums folder to the AlbumApiController class. Routing in ASP.NET is used to create extensionless URLs and allows you to map segments of the URL to specific Route Value parameters. A route parameter, with a name inside curly brackets like {name}, is mapped to parameters on the controller methods. Route parameters can be optional, and there are two special route parameters – controller and action – that determine the controller to call and the method to activate respectively. HTTP Verb Routing Routing in Web API can route requests by HTTP Verb in addition to standard {controller},{action} routing. For the first examples, I use HTTP Verb routing, as shown Listing 1. Notice that the route I’ve defined does not include an {action} route value or action value in the defaults. Rather, Web API can use the HTTP Verb in this route to determine the method to call the controller, and a GET request maps to any method that starts with Get. So methods called Get() or GetAlbums() are matched by a GET request and a POST request maps to a Post() or PostAlbum(). Web API matches a method by name and parameter signature to match a route, query string or POST values. In lieu of the method name, the [HttpGet,HttpPost,HttpPut,HttpDelete, etc] attributes can also be used to designate the accepted verbs explicitly if you don’t want to follow the verb naming conventions. Although HTTP Verb routing is a good practice for REST style resource APIs, it’s not required and you can still use more traditional routes with an explicit {action} route parameter. When {action} is supplied, the HTTP verb routing is ignored. I’ll talk more about alternate routes later. When you’re finished with initial creation of files, your project should look like Figure 2.   Figure 2: The initial project has the new API Controller Album model   Creating a small Album Model Now it’s time to create some controller methods to serve data. For these examples, I’ll use a very simple Album and Songs model to play with, as shown in Listing 2. public class Song { public string AlbumId { get; set; } [Required, StringLength(80)] public string SongName { get; set; } [StringLength(5)] public string SongLength { get; set; } } public class Album { public string Id { get; set; } [Required, StringLength(80)] public string AlbumName { get; set; } [StringLength(80)] public string Artist { get; set; } public int YearReleased { get; set; } public DateTime Entered { get; set; } [StringLength(150)] public string AlbumImageUrl { get; set; } [StringLength(200)] public string AmazonUrl { get; set; } public virtual List<Song> Songs { get; set; } public Album() { Songs = new List<Song>(); Entered = DateTime.Now; // Poor man's unique Id off GUID hash Id = Guid.NewGuid().GetHashCode().ToString("x"); } public void AddSong(string songName, string songLength = null) { this.Songs.Add(new Song() { AlbumId = this.Id, SongName = songName, SongLength = songLength }); } } Once the model has been created, I also added an AlbumData class that generates some static data in memory that is loaded onto a static .Current member. The signature of this class looks like this and that's what I'll access to retrieve the base data:public static class AlbumData { // sample data - static list public static List<Album> Current = CreateSampleAlbumData(); /// <summary> /// Create some sample data /// </summary> /// <returns></returns> public static List<Album> CreateSampleAlbumData() { … }} You can check out the full code for the data generation online. Creating an AlbumApiController Web API shares many concepts of ASP.NET MVC, and the implementation of your API logic is done by implementing a subclass of the System.Web.Http.ApiController class. Each public method in the implemented controller is a potential endpoint for the HTTP API, as long as a matching route can be found to invoke it. The class name you create should end in Controller, which is how Web API matches the controller route value to figure out which class to invoke. Inside the controller you can implement methods that take standard .NET input parameters and return .NET values as results. Web API’s binding tries to match POST data, route values, form values or query string values to your parameters. Because the controller is configured for HTTP Verb based routing (no {action} parameter in the route), any methods that start with Getxxxx() are called by an HTTP GET operation. You can have multiple methods that match each HTTP Verb as long as the parameter signatures are different and can be matched by Web API. In Listing 3, I create an AlbumApiController with two methods to retrieve a list of albums and a single album by its title .public class AlbumApiController : ApiController { public IEnumerable<Album> GetAlbums() { var albums = AlbumData.Current.OrderBy(alb => alb.Artist); return albums; } public Album GetAlbum(string title) { var album = AlbumData.Current .SingleOrDefault(alb => alb.AlbumName.Contains(title)); return album; }} To access the first two requests, you can use the following URLs in your browser: http://localhost/aspnetWebApi/albumshttp://localhost/aspnetWebApi/albums/Dirty%20Deeds Note that you’re not specifying the actions of GetAlbum or GetAlbums in these URLs. Instead Web API’s routing uses HTTP GET verb to route to these methods that start with Getxxx() with the first mapping to the parameterless GetAlbums() method and the latter to the GetAlbum(title) method that receives the title parameter mapped as optional in the route. Content Negotiation When you access any of the URLs above from a browser, you get either an XML or JSON result returned back. The album list result for Chrome 17 and Internet Explorer 9 is shown Figure 3. Figure 3: Web API responses can vary depending on the browser used, demonstrating Content Negotiation in action as these two browsers send different HTTP Accept headers.   Notice that the results are not the same: Chrome returns an XML response and IE9 returns a JSON response. Whoa, what’s going on here? Shouldn’t we see the same result in both browsers? Actually, no. Web API determines what type of content to return based on Accept headers. HTTP clients, like browsers, use Accept headers to specify what kind of content they’d like to see returned. Browsers generally ask for HTML first, followed by a few additional content types. Chrome (and most other major browsers) ask for: Accept: text/html, application/xhtml+xml,application/xml; q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8 IE9 asks for: Accept: text/html, application/xhtml+xml, */* Note that Chrome’s Accept header includes application/xml, which Web API finds in its list of supported media types and returns an XML response. IE9 does not include an Accept header type that works on Web API by default, and so it returns the default format, which is JSON. This is an important and very useful feature that was missing from any previous Microsoft REST tools: Web API automatically switches output formats based on HTTP Accept headers. Nowhere in the server code above do you have to explicitly specify the output format. Rather, Web API determines what format the client is requesting based on the Accept headers and automatically returns the result based on the available formatters. This means that a single method can handle both XML and JSON results.. Using this simple approach makes it very easy to create a single controller method that can return JSON, XML, ATOM or even OData feeds by providing the appropriate Accept header from the client. By default you don’t have to worry about the output format in your code. Note that you can still specify an explicit output format if you choose, either globally by overriding the installed formatters, or individually by returning a lower level HttpResponseMessage instance and setting the formatter explicitly. More on that in a minute. Along the same lines, any content sent to the server via POST/PUT is parsed by Web API based on the HTTP Content-type of the data sent. The same formats allowed for output are also allowed on input. Again, you don’t have to do anything in your code – Web API automatically performs the deserialization from the content. Accessing Web API JSON Data with jQuery A very common scenario for Web API endpoints is to retrieve data for AJAX calls from the Web browser. Because JSON is the default format for Web API, it’s easy to access data from the server using jQuery and its getJSON() method. This example receives the albums array from GetAlbums() and databinds it into the page using knockout.js.$.getJSON("albums/", function (albums) { // make knockout template visible $(".album").show(); // create view object and attach array var view = { albums: albums }; ko.applyBindings(view); }); Figure 4 shows this and the next example’s HTML output. You can check out the complete HTML and script code at http://goo.gl/Ix33C (.html) and http://goo.gl/tETlg (.js). Figu Figure 4: The Album Display sample uses JSON data loaded from Web API.   The result from the getJSON() call is a JavaScript object of the server result, which comes back as a JavaScript array. In the code, I use knockout.js to bind this array into the UI, which as you can see, requires very little code, instead using knockout’s data-bind attributes to bind server data to the UI. Of course, this is just one way to use the data – it’s entirely up to you to decide what to do with the data in your client code. Along the same lines, I can retrieve a single album to display when the user clicks on an album. The response returns the album information and a child array with all the songs. The code to do this is very similar to the last example where we pulled the albums array:$(".albumlink").live("click", function () { var id = $(this).data("id"); // title $.getJSON("albums/" + id, function (album) { ko.applyBindings(album, $("#divAlbumDialog")[0]); $("#divAlbumDialog").show(); }); }); Here the URL looks like this: /albums/Dirty%20Deeds, where the title is the ID captured from the clicked element’s data ID attribute. Explicitly Overriding Output Format When Web API automatically converts output using content negotiation, it does so by matching Accept header media types to the GlobalConfiguration.Configuration.Formatters and the SupportedMediaTypes of each individual formatter. You can add and remove formatters to globally affect what formats are available and it’s easy to create and plug in custom formatters.The example project includes a JSONP formatter that can be plugged in to provide JSONP support for requests that have a callback= querystring parameter. Adding, removing or replacing formatters is a global option you can use to manipulate content. It’s beyond the scope of this introduction to show how it works, but you can review the sample code or check out my blog entry on the subject (http://goo.gl/UAzaR). If automatic processing is not desirable in a particular Controller method, you can override the response output explicitly by returning an HttpResponseMessage instance. HttpResponseMessage is similar to ActionResult in ASP.NET MVC in that it’s a common way to return an abstract result message that contains content. HttpResponseMessage s parsed by the Web API framework using standard interfaces to retrieve the response data, status code, headers and so on[MS2] . Web API turns every response – including those Controller methods that return static results – into HttpResponseMessage instances. Explicitly returning an HttpResponseMessage instance gives you full control over the output and lets you mostly bypass WebAPI’s post-processing of the HTTP response on your behalf. HttpResponseMessage allows you to customize the response in great detail. Web API’s attention to detail in the HTTP spec really shows; many HTTP options are exposed as properties and enumerations with detailed IntelliSense comments. Even if you’re new to building REST-based interfaces, the API guides you in the right direction for returning valid responses and response codes. For example, assume that I always want to return JSON from the GetAlbums() controller method and ignore the default media type content negotiation. To do this, I can adjust the output format and headers as shown in Listing 4.public HttpResponseMessage GetAlbums() { var albums = AlbumData.Current.OrderBy(alb => alb.Artist); // Create a new HttpResponse with Json Formatter explicitly var resp = new HttpResponseMessage(HttpStatusCode.OK); resp.Content = new ObjectContent<IEnumerable<Album>>( albums, new JsonMediaTypeFormatter()); // Get Default Formatter based on Content Negotiation //var resp = Request.CreateResponse<IEnumerable<Album>>(HttpStatusCode.OK, albums); resp.Headers.ConnectionClose = true; resp.Headers.CacheControl = new CacheControlHeaderValue(); resp.Headers.CacheControl.Public = true; return resp; } This example returns the same IEnumerable<Album> value, but it wraps the response into an HttpResponseMessage so you can control the entire HTTP message result including the headers, formatter and status code. In Listing 4, I explicitly specify the formatter using the JsonMediaTypeFormatter to always force the content to JSON.  If you prefer to use the default content negotiation with HttpResponseMessage results, you can create the Response instance using the Request.CreateResponse method:var resp = Request.CreateResponse<IEnumerable<Album>>(HttpStatusCode.OK, albums); This provides you an HttpResponse object that's pre-configured with the default formatter based on Content Negotiation. Once you have an HttpResponse object you can easily control most HTTP aspects on this object. What's sweet here is that there are many more detailed properties on HttpResponse than the core ASP.NET Response object, with most options being explicitly configurable with enumerations that make it easy to pick the right headers and response codes from a list of valid codes. It makes HTTP features available much more discoverable even for non-hardcore REST/HTTP geeks. Non-Serialized Results The output returned doesn’t have to be a serialized value but can also be raw data, like strings, binary data or streams. You can use the HttpResponseMessage.Content object to set a number of common Content classes. Listing 5 shows how to return a binary image using the ByteArrayContent class from a Controller method. [HttpGet] public HttpResponseMessage AlbumArt(string title) { var album = AlbumData.Current.FirstOrDefault(abl => abl.AlbumName.StartsWith(title)); if (album == null) { var resp = Request.CreateResponse<ApiMessageError>( HttpStatusCode.NotFound, new ApiMessageError("Album not found")); return resp; } // kinda silly - we would normally serve this directly // but hey - it's a demo. var http = new WebClient(); var imageData = http.DownloadData(album.AlbumImageUrl); // create response and return var result = new HttpResponseMessage(HttpStatusCode.OK); result.Content = new ByteArrayContent(imageData); result.Content.Headers.ContentType = new MediaTypeHeaderValue("image/jpeg"); return result; } The image retrieval from Amazon is contrived, but it shows how to return binary data using ByteArrayContent. It also demonstrates that you can easily return multiple types of content from a single controller method, which is actually quite common. If an error occurs - such as a resource can’t be found or a validation error – you can return an error response to the client that’s very specific to the error. In GetAlbumArt(), if the album can’t be found, we want to return a 404 Not Found status (and realistically no error, as it’s an image). Note that if you are not using HTTP Verb-based routing or not accessing a method that starts with Get/Post etc., you have to specify one or more HTTP Verb attributes on the method explicitly. Here, I used the [HttpGet] attribute to serve the image. Another option to handle the error could be to return a fixed placeholder image if no album could be matched or the album doesn’t have an image. When returning an error code, you can also return a strongly typed response to the client. For example, you can set the 404 status code and also return a custom error object (ApiMessageError is a class I defined) like this:return Request.CreateResponse<ApiMessageError>( HttpStatusCode.NotFound, new ApiMessageError("Album not found") );   If the album can be found, the image will be returned. The image is downloaded into a byte[] array, and then assigned to the result’s Content property. I created a new ByteArrayContent instance and assigned the image’s bytes and the content type so that it displays properly in the browser. There are other content classes available: StringContent, StreamContent, ByteArrayContent, MultipartContent, and ObjectContent are at your disposal to return just about any kind of content. You can create your own Content classes if you frequently return custom types and handle the default formatter assignments that should be used to send the data out . Although HttpResponseMessage results require more code than returning a plain .NET value from a method, it allows much more control over the actual HTTP processing than automatic processing. It also makes it much easier to test your controller methods as you get a response object that you can check for specific status codes and output messages rather than just a result value. Routing Again Ok, let’s get back to the image example. Using the original routing we have setup using HTTP Verb routing there's no good way to serve the image. In order to return my album art image I’d like to use a URL like this: http://localhost/aspnetWebApi/albums/Dirty%20Deeds/image In order to create a URL like this, I have to create a new Controller because my earlier routes pointed to the AlbumApiController using HTTP Verb routing. HTTP Verb based routing is great for representing a single set of resources such as albums. You can map operations like add, delete, update and read easily using HTTP Verbs. But you cannot mix action based routing into a an HTTP Verb routing controller - you can only map HTTP Verbs and each method has to be unique based on parameter signature. You can't have multiple GET operations to methods with the same signature. So GetImage(string id) and GetAlbum(string title) are in conflict in an HTTP GET routing scenario. In fact, I was unable to make the above Image URL work with any combination of HTTP Verb plus Custom routing using the single Albums controller. There are number of ways around this, but all involve additional controllers.  Personally, I think it’s easier to use explicit Action routing and then add custom routes if you need to simplify your URLs further. So in order to accommodate some of the other examples, I created another controller – AlbumRpcApiController – to handle all requests that are explicitly routed via actions (/albums/rpc/AlbumArt) or are custom routed with explicit routes defined in the HttpConfiguration. I added the AlbumArt() method to this new AlbumRpcApiController class. For the image URL to work with the new AlbumRpcApiController, you need a custom route placed before the default route from Listing 1.RouteTable.Routes.MapHttpRoute( name: "AlbumRpcApiAction", routeTemplate: "albums/rpc/{action}/{title}", defaults: new { title = RouteParameter.Optional, controller = "AlbumRpcApi", action = "GetAblums" } ); Now I can use either of the following URLs to access the image: Custom route: (/albums/rpc/{title}/image)http://localhost/aspnetWebApi/albums/PowerAge/image Action route: (/albums/rpc/action/{title})http://localhost/aspnetWebAPI/albums/rpc/albumart/PowerAge Sending Data to the Server To send data to the server and add a new album, you can use an HTTP POST operation. Since I’m using HTTP Verb-based routing in the original AlbumApiController, I can implement a method called PostAlbum()to accept a new album from the client. Listing 6 shows the Web API code to add a new album.public HttpResponseMessage PostAlbum(Album album) { if (!this.ModelState.IsValid) { // my custom error class var error = new ApiMessageError() { message = "Model is invalid" }; // add errors into our client error model for client foreach (var prop in ModelState.Values) { var modelError = prop.Errors.FirstOrDefault(); if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(modelError.ErrorMessage)) error.errors.Add(modelError.ErrorMessage); else error.errors.Add(modelError.Exception.Message); } return Request.CreateResponse<ApiMessageError>(HttpStatusCode.Conflict, error); } // update song id which isn't provided foreach (var song in album.Songs) song.AlbumId = album.Id; // see if album exists already var matchedAlbum = AlbumData.Current .SingleOrDefault(alb => alb.Id == album.Id || alb.AlbumName == album.AlbumName); if (matchedAlbum == null) AlbumData.Current.Add(album); else matchedAlbum = album; // return a string to show that the value got here var resp = Request.CreateResponse(HttpStatusCode.OK, string.Empty); resp.Content = new StringContent(album.AlbumName + " " + album.Entered.ToString(), Encoding.UTF8, "text/plain"); return resp; } The PostAlbum() method receives an album parameter, which is automatically deserialized from the POST buffer the client sent. The data passed from the client can be either XML or JSON. Web API automatically figures out what format it needs to deserialize based on the content type and binds the content to the album object. Web API uses model binding to bind the request content to the parameter(s) of controller methods. Like MVC you can check the model by looking at ModelState.IsValid. If it’s not valid, you can run through the ModelState.Values collection and check each binding for errors. Here I collect the error messages into a string array that gets passed back to the client via the result ApiErrorMessage object. When a binding error occurs, you’ll want to return an HTTP error response and it’s best to do that with an HttpResponseMessage result. In Listing 6, I used a custom error class that holds a message and an array of detailed error messages for each binding error. I used this object as the content to return to the client along with my Conflict HTTP Status Code response. If binding succeeds, the example returns a string with the name and date entered to demonstrate that you captured the data. Normally, a method like this should return a Boolean or no response at all (HttpStatusCode.NoConent). The sample uses a simple static list to hold albums, so once you’ve added the album using the Post operation, you can hit the /albums/ URL to see that the new album was added. The client jQuery code to call the POST operation from the client with jQuery is shown in Listing 7. var id = new Date().getTime().toString(); var album = { "Id": id, "AlbumName": "Power Age", "Artist": "AC/DC", "YearReleased": 1977, "Entered": "2002-03-11T18:24:43.5580794-10:00", "AlbumImageUrl": http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/…, "AmazonUrl": http://www.amazon.com/…, "Songs": [ { "SongName": "Rock 'n Roll Damnation", "SongLength": 3.12}, { "SongName": "Downpayment Blues", "SongLength": 4.22 }, { "SongName": "Riff Raff", "SongLength": 2.42 } ] } $.ajax( { url: "albums/", type: "POST", contentType: "application/json", data: JSON.stringify(album), processData: false, beforeSend: function (xhr) { // not required since JSON is default output xhr.setRequestHeader("Accept", "application/json"); }, success: function (result) { // reload list of albums page.loadAlbums(); }, error: function (xhr, status, p3, p4) { var err = "Error"; if (xhr.responseText && xhr.responseText[0] == "{") err = JSON.parse(xhr.responseText).message; alert(err); } }); The code in Listing 7 creates an album object in JavaScript to match the structure of the .NET Album class. This object is passed to the $.ajax() function to send to the server as POST. The data is turned into JSON and the content type set to application/json so that the server knows what to convert when deserializing in the Album instance. The jQuery code hooks up success and failure events. Success returns the result data, which is a string that’s echoed back with an alert box. If an error occurs, jQuery returns the XHR instance and status code. You can check the XHR to see if a JSON object is embedded and if it is, you can extract it by de-serializing it and accessing the .message property. REST standards suggest that updates to existing resources should use PUT operations. REST standards aside, I’m not a big fan of separating out inserts and updates so I tend to have a single method that handles both. But if you want to follow REST suggestions, you can create a PUT method that handles updates by forwarding the PUT operation to the POST method:public HttpResponseMessage PutAlbum(Album album) { return PostAlbum(album); } To make the corresponding $.ajax() call, all you have to change from Listing 7 is the type: from POST to PUT. Model Binding with UrlEncoded POST Variables In the example in Listing 7 I used JSON objects to post a serialized object to a server method that accepted an strongly typed object with the same structure, which is a common way to send data to the server. However, Web API supports a number of different ways that data can be received by server methods. For example, another common way is to use plain UrlEncoded POST  values to send to the server. Web API supports Model Binding that works similar (but not the same) as MVC's model binding where POST variables are mapped to properties of object parameters of the target method. This is actually quite common for AJAX calls that want to avoid serialization and the potential requirement of a JSON parser on older browsers. For example, using jQUery you might use the $.post() method to send a new album to the server (albeit one without songs) using code like the following:$.post("albums/",{AlbumName: "Dirty Deeds", YearReleased: 1976 … },albumPostCallback); Although the code looks very similar to the client code we used before passing JSON, here the data passed is URL encoded values (AlbumName=Dirty+Deeds&YearReleased=1976 etc.). Web API then takes this POST data and maps each of the POST values to the properties of the Album object in the method's parameter. Although the client code is different the server can both handle the JSON object, or the UrlEncoded POST values. Dynamic Access to POST Data There are also a few options available to dynamically access POST data, if you know what type of data you're dealing with. If you have POST UrlEncoded values, you can dynamically using a FormsDataCollection:[HttpPost] public string PostAlbum(FormDataCollection form) { return string.Format("{0} - released {1}", form.Get("AlbumName"),form.Get("RearReleased")); } The FormDataCollection is a very simple object, that essentially provides the same functionality as Request.Form[] in ASP.NET. Request.Form[] still works if you're running hosted in an ASP.NET application. However as a general rule, while ASP.NET's functionality is always available when running Web API hosted inside of an  ASP.NET application, using the built in classes specific to Web API makes it possible to run Web API applications in a self hosted environment outside of ASP.NET. If your client is sending JSON to your server, and you don't want to map the JSON to a strongly typed object because you only want to retrieve a few simple values, you can also accept a JObject parameter in your API methods:[HttpPost] public string PostAlbum(JObject jsonData) { dynamic json = jsonData; JObject jalbum = json.Album; JObject juser = json.User; string token = json.UserToken; var album = jalbum.ToObject<Album>(); var user = juser.ToObject<User>(); return String.Format("{0} {1} {2}", album.AlbumName, user.Name, token); } There quite a few options available to you to receive data with Web API, which gives you more choices for the right tool for the job. Unfortunately one shortcoming of Web API is that POST data is always mapped to a single parameter. This means you can't pass multiple POST parameters to methods that receive POST data. It's possible to accept multiple parameters, but only one can map to the POST content - the others have to come from the query string or route values. I have a couple of Blog POSTs that explain what works and what doesn't here: Passing multiple POST parameters to Web API Controller Methods Mapping UrlEncoded POST Values in ASP.NET Web API   Handling Delete Operations Finally, to round out the server API code of the album example we've been discussin, here’s the DELETE verb controller method that allows removal of an album by its title:public HttpResponseMessage DeleteAlbum(string title) { var matchedAlbum = AlbumData.Current.Where(alb => alb.AlbumName == title) .SingleOrDefault(); if (matchedAlbum == null) return new HttpResponseMessage(HttpStatusCode.NotFound); AlbumData.Current.Remove(matchedAlbum); return new HttpResponseMessage(HttpStatusCode.NoContent); } To call this action method using jQuery, you can use:$(".removeimage").live("click", function () { var $el = $(this).parent(".album"); var txt = $el.find("a").text(); $.ajax({ url: "albums/" + encodeURIComponent(txt), type: "Delete", success: function (result) { $el.fadeOut().remove(); }, error: jqError }); }   Note the use of the DELETE verb in the $.ajax() call, which routes to DeleteAlbum on the server. DELETE is a non-content operation, so you supply a resource ID (the title) via route value or the querystring. Routing Conflicts In all requests with the exception of the AlbumArt image example shown so far, I used HTTP Verb routing that I set up in Listing 1. HTTP Verb Routing is a recommendation that is in line with typical REST access to HTTP resources. However, it takes quite a bit of effort to create REST-compliant API implementations based only on HTTP Verb routing only. You saw one example that didn’t really fit – the return of an image where I created a custom route albums/{title}/image that required creation of a second controller and a custom route to work. HTTP Verb routing to a controller does not mix with custom or action routing to the same controller because of the limited mapping of HTTP verbs imposed by HTTP Verb routing. To understand some of the problems with verb routing, let’s look at another example. Let’s say you create a GetSortableAlbums() method like this and add it to the original AlbumApiController accessed via HTTP Verb routing:[HttpGet] public IQueryable<Album> SortableAlbums() { var albums = AlbumData.Current; // generally should be done only on actual queryable results (EF etc.) // Done here because we're running with a static list but otherwise might be slow return albums.AsQueryable(); } If you compile this code and try to now access the /albums/ link, you get an error: Multiple Actions were found that match the request. HTTP Verb routing only allows access to one GET operation per parameter/route value match. If more than one method exists with the same parameter signature, it doesn’t work. As I mentioned earlier for the image display, the only solution to get this method to work is to throw it into another controller. Because I already set up the AlbumRpcApiController I can add the method there. First, I should rename the method to SortableAlbums() so I’m not using a Get prefix for the method. This also makes the action parameter look cleaner in the URL - it looks less like a method and more like a noun. I can then create a new route that handles direct-action mapping:RouteTable.Routes.MapHttpRoute( name: "AlbumRpcApiAction", routeTemplate: "albums/rpc/{action}/{title}", defaults: new { title = RouteParameter.Optional, controller = "AlbumRpcApi", action = "GetAblums" } ); As I am explicitly adding a route segment – rpc – into the route template, I can now reference explicit methods in the Web API controller using URLs like this: http://localhost/AspNetWebApi/rpc/SortableAlbums Error Handling I’ve already done some minimal error handling in the examples. For example in Listing 6, I detected some known-error scenarios like model validation failing or a resource not being found and returning an appropriate HttpResponseMessage result. But what happens if your code just blows up or causes an exception? If you have a controller method, like this:[HttpGet] public void ThrowException() { throw new UnauthorizedAccessException("Unauthorized Access Sucka"); } You can call it with this: http://localhost/AspNetWebApi/albums/rpc/ThrowException The default exception handling displays a 500-status response with the serialized exception on the local computer only. When you connect from a remote computer, Web API throws back a 500  HTTP Error with no data returned (IIS then adds its HTML error page). The behavior is configurable in the GlobalConfiguration:GlobalConfiguration .Configuration .IncludeErrorDetailPolicy = IncludeErrorDetailPolicy.Never; If you want more control over your error responses sent from code, you can throw explicit error responses yourself using HttpResponseException. When you throw an HttpResponseException the response parameter is used to generate the output for the Controller action. [HttpGet] public void ThrowError() { var resp = Request.CreateResponse<ApiMessageError>( HttpStatusCode.BadRequest, new ApiMessageError("Your code stinks!")); throw new HttpResponseException(resp); } Throwing an HttpResponseException stops the processing of the controller method and immediately returns the response you passed to the exception. Unlike other Exceptions fired inside of WebAPI, HttpResponseException bypasses the Exception Filters installed and instead just outputs the response you provide. In this case, the serialized ApiMessageError result string is returned in the default serialization format – XML or JSON. You can pass any content to HttpResponseMessage, which includes creating your own exception objects and consistently returning error messages to the client. Here’s a small helper method on the controller that you might use to send exception info back to the client consistently:private void ThrowSafeException(string message, HttpStatusCode statusCode = HttpStatusCode.BadRequest) { var errResponse = Request.CreateResponse<ApiMessageError>(statusCode, new ApiMessageError() { message = message }); throw new HttpResponseException(errResponse); } You can then use it to output any captured errors from code:[HttpGet] public void ThrowErrorSafe() { try { List<string> list = null; list.Add("Rick"); } catch (Exception ex) { ThrowSafeException(ex.Message); } }   Exception Filters Another more global solution is to create an Exception Filter. Filters in Web API provide the ability to pre- and post-process controller method operations. An exception filter looks at all exceptions fired and then optionally creates an HttpResponseMessage result. Listing 8 shows an example of a basic Exception filter implementation.public class UnhandledExceptionFilter : ExceptionFilterAttribute { public override void OnException(HttpActionExecutedContext context) { HttpStatusCode status = HttpStatusCode.InternalServerError; var exType = context.Exception.GetType(); if (exType == typeof(UnauthorizedAccessException)) status = HttpStatusCode.Unauthorized; else if (exType == typeof(ArgumentException)) status = HttpStatusCode.NotFound; var apiError = new ApiMessageError() { message = context.Exception.Message }; // create a new response and attach our ApiError object // which now gets returned on ANY exception result var errorResponse = context.Request.CreateResponse<ApiMessageError>(status, apiError); context.Response = errorResponse; base.OnException(context); } } Exception Filter Attributes can be assigned to an ApiController class like this:[UnhandledExceptionFilter] public class AlbumRpcApiController : ApiController or you can globally assign it to all controllers by adding it to the HTTP Configuration's Filters collection:GlobalConfiguration.Configuration.Filters.Add(new UnhandledExceptionFilter()); The latter is a great way to get global error trapping so that all errors (short of hard IIS errors and explicit HttpResponseException errors) return a valid error response that includes error information in the form of a known-error object. Using a filter like this allows you to throw an exception as you normally would and have your filter create a response in the appropriate output format that the client expects. For example, an AJAX application can on failure expect to see a JSON error result that corresponds to the real error that occurred rather than a 500 error along with HTML error page that IIS throws up. You can even create some custom exceptions so you can differentiate your own exceptions from unhandled system exceptions - you often don't want to display error information from 'unknown' exceptions as they may contain sensitive system information or info that's not generally useful to users of your application/site. This is just one example of how ASP.NET Web API is configurable and extensible. Exception filters are just one example of how you can plug-in into the Web API request flow to modify output. Many more hooks exist and I’ll take a closer look at extensibility in Part 2 of this article in the future. Summary Web API is a big improvement over previous Microsoft REST and AJAX toolkits. The key features to its usefulness are its ease of use with simple controller based logic, familiar MVC-style routing, low configuration impact, extensibility at all levels and tight attention to exposing and making HTTP semantics easily discoverable and easy to use. Although none of the concepts used in Web API are new or radical, Web API combines the best of previous platforms into a single framework that’s highly functional, easy to work with, and extensible to boot. I think that Microsoft has hit a home run with Web API. Related Resources Where does ASP.NET Web API fit? I am having difficulty getting the Ubuntu installer (and gparted) to recognize the partitions on my MBR type disk. Other operating systems and disk tools read the disk structure and the files on it fine. I have used fixparts to write a new MBR but the issue persists. • Some VS 2010 RC Updates (including patches for Intellisense and Web Designer fixes)

    - by ScottGu
    [In addition to blogging, I am also now using Twitter for quick updates and to share links. Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu] We are continuing to make progress on shipping Visual Studio 2010.  I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has downloaded and tried out the VS 2010 Release Candidate, and especially to those who have sent us feedback or reported issues with it. This data has been invaluable in helping us find and fix remaining bugs before we ship the final release. Last month I blogged about a patch we released for the VS 2010 RC that fixed a bad intellisense crash issue.  This past week we released two additional patches that you can download and apply to the VS 2010 RC to immediately fix two other common issues we’ve seen people run into: Patch that fixes crashes with Tooltip invocation and when hovering over identifiers The Visual Studio team recently released a second patch that fixes some crashes we’ve seen when tooltips are displayed – most commonly when hovering over an identifier to view a QuickInfo tooltip. You can learn more about this issue from this blog post, and download and apply the patch here. Patch that fixes issues with the Web Forms designer not correctly adding controls to the auto-generated designer files The Visual Web Developer team recently released a patch that fixes issues where web controls are not correctly added to the .designer.cs file associated with the .aspx file – which means they can’t be programmed against in the code-behind file.  This issue is most commonly described as “controls are not being recognized in the code-behind” or “editing existing .aspx files regenerates the .aspx.designer.(vb or cs) file and controls are now missing” or “I can’t embed controls within the Ajax Control Toolkit TabContainer or the <asp:createuserwizard> control”. You can learn more about the issue here, and download the patch that fixes it here. Common Cause of Intellisense and IDE sluggishness on Windows XP, Vista, Win Server 2003/2008 systems Over the last few months we’ve occasionally seen reports of people seeing tremendous slowness when typing and using intellisense within VS 2010 despite running on decent machines.  It took us awhile to track down the cause – but we have found that the common culprit seems to be that these machines don’t have the latest versions of the UIA (Windows Automation) component installed. UIA 3 ships with Windows 7, and is a recommended Windows Update patch on XP and Vista (which is why we didn’t see the problem in our tests – since our machines are patched with all recommended updates).  Many systems (especially on XP) don’t automatically install recommended updates, though, and are running with older versions of UIA. This can cause significant performance slow-downs within the VS 2010 editor when large lists are displayed (for example: with intellisense). If you are running on Windows XP, Vista, or Windows Server 2003 or 2008 and are seeing any performance issues with the editor or IDE, please install the free UIA 3 update that can be downloaded from this page.  If you scroll down the page you’ll find direct links to versions for each OS. Note that we are making improvements to the final release of VS 2010 so that we don’t have big perf issues when UIA 3 isn’t installed – and we are also adding a message within the IDE that will warn you if you don’t have UIA 3 installed and accessibility is activated. Improved Text Rendering with WPF 4 and VS 2010 We recently made some nice changes to WPF 4 which improve the text clarity and text crispness over what was in the VS 2010/.NET 4 Release Candidate.  In particular these changes improve scenarios where you have a dark background with light text. You can learn more about these improvements in this WPF Team blog post.  These changes will be in the final release of VS 2010 and .NET 4. Hope this helps, Scott

  • Naming PowerPoint Components With A VSTO Add-In

    - by Tim Murphy
    Note: Cross posted from Coding The Document. Permalink Sometimes in order to work with Open XML we need a little help from other tools.  In this post I am going to describe  a fairly simple solution for marking up PowerPoint presentations so that they can be used as templates and processed using the Open XML SDK. Add-ins are tools which it can be hard to find information on.  I am going to up the obscurity by adding a Ribbon button.  For my example I am using Visual Studio 2008 and creating a PowerPoint 2007 Add-in project.  To that add a Ribbon Visual Designer.  The new ribbon by default will show up on the Add-in tab. Add a button to the ribbon.  Also add a WinForm to collect a new name for the object selected.  Make sure to set the OK button’s DialogResult to OK. In the ribbon button click event add the following code. ObjectNameForm dialog = new ObjectNameForm(); Selection selection = Globals.ThisAddIn.Application.ActiveWindow.Selection;   dialog.objectName = selection.ShapeRange.Name;   if (dialog.ShowDialog() == DialogResult.OK) { selection.ShapeRange.Name = dialog.objectName; } This code will first read the current Name attribute of the Shape object.  If the user clicks OK on the dialog it save the string value back to the same place. Once it is done you can retrieve identify the control through Open XML via the NonVisualDisplayProperties objects.  The only problem is that this object is a child of several different classes.  This means that there isn’t just one way to retrieve the value.  Below are a couple of pieces of code to identify the container that you have named. The first example is if you are naming placeholders in a layout slide. foreach(var slideMasterPart in slideMasterParts) { var layoutParts = slideMasterPart.SlideLayoutParts; foreach(SlideLayoutPart slideLayoutPart in layoutParts) { foreach (assmPresentation.Shape shape in slideLayoutPart.SlideLayout.CommonSlideData.ShapeTree.Descendants<assmPresentation.Shape>()) { var slideMasterProperties = from p in shape.Descendants<assmPresentation.NonVisualDrawingProperties>() where p.Name == TokenText.Text select p;   if (slideMasterProperties.Count() > 0) tokenFound = true; } } } The second example allows you to find charts that you have named with the add-in. foreach(var slidePart in slideParts) { foreach(assmPresentation.Shape slideShape in slidePart.Slide.CommonSlideData.ShapeTree.Descendants<assmPresentation.Shape>()) { var slideProperties = from g in slidePart.Slide.Descendants<GraphicFrame>() where g.NonVisualGraphicFrameProperties.NonVisualDrawingProperties.Name == TokenText.Text select g;   if(slideProperties.Count() > 0) { tokenFound = true; } } } Together the combination of Open XML and VSTO add-ins make a powerful combination in creating a process for maintaining a template and generating documents from the template.

  • Looking into ASP.Net MVC 4.0 Mobile Development - part 1

    - by nikolaosk
    In this post I will be looking how ASP.Net MVC 4.0 helps us to create web solutions that target mobile devices.We all experience the magic that is the World Wide Web through mobile devices. Millions of people around the world, use tablets and smartphones to view the contents of websites,e-shops and portals.ASP.Net MVC 4.0 includes a new mobile project template and the ability to render a different set of views for different types of devices.There is a new feature that is called browser overriding which allows us to control exactly what a user is going to see from your web application regardless of what type of device he is using.In order to follow along this post you must have Visual Studio 2012 and .Net Framework 4.5 installed in your machine.Download and install VS 2012 using this link.My machine runs on Windows 8 and Visual Studio 2012 works just fine.It will work fine in Windows 7 as well so do not worry if you do not have the latest Microsoft operating system.1) Launch VS 2012 and create a new Web Forms application by going to File - >New Project - > ASP.Net MVC 4 Web Application and then click OKHave a look at the picture below  2) From the available templates select Mobile Application and then click OK.Have a look at the picture below 3) When I run the application I get the mobile view of the page. I would like to show you what a typical ASP.Net MVC 4.0 application looks like. So I will create a new simple ASP.Net MVC 4.0 Web Application. When I run the application I get the normal page view.Have a look at the picture below.On the left is the mobile view and on the right the normal view. As you can see we have more or less the same content in our mobile application (log in,register) compared with the normal ASP.Net MVC 4.0 application but it is optimised for mobile devices. 4) Let me explain how and when the mobile view is selected and finally rendered.There is a feature in MVC 4.0 that is called Display Modes and with this feature the runtime will select a view.If we have 2 views e.g contact.mobile.cshtml and contact.cshtml in our application the Controller at some point will instruct the runtime to select and render a view named contact.The runtime will look at the browser making the request and will determine if it is a mobile browser or a desktop browser. So if there is a request from my IPhone Safari browser for a particular site, if there is a mobile view the MVC 4.0 will select it and render it. If there is not a mobile view, the normal view will be rendered.5) In the  ASP.Net MVC 4.0 (Internet application) I created earlier (not the first project which was a mobile one) I can run it once more and see how it looks on the browser. If I want to view it with a mobile browser I must download one emulator like Opera Mobile.You can download Opera Mobile hereWhen I run the application I get the same view in both the desktop and the mobile browser. That was to be expected. Have a look at the picture below 6) Then I create another version of the _Layout.mobile.cshtml view in the Shared folder.I simply copy and paste the _Layout.cshtml  into the same folder and then rename it to _Layout.mobile.cshtml and then just alter the contents of the _Layout.mobile.cshtml.When I run again the application I get a different view on the desktop browser and a different one on the Opera mobile browser.Have a look at the picture below ?he Controller will instruct the ASP.Net runtime to select and render a view named _Layout.mobile.cshtml when the request will come from a mobile browser.?he runtime knows that a browser is a mobile one through the ASP.Net browser capability provider. Hope it helps!!!
