• PASS: Board Q&amp;A at the Summit

  The last two years we’ve put the Board in front of the members and taken questions.  We’re going to do that again this year.  It will be in Room 307/308 from 12:15 to 1:30 on Friday. Yes, this time overlaps with the Birds of a Feather Lunch and the start of afternoon sessions – but only partially.  You can attend the Q&A and still get to parts of both of those.  There just isn’t a great time to do this.  Every time overlaps with something. We can’t do it after the last session on Friday.  We can’t fit it between the last session and the evening events on Wednesday or Thursday.  We had some discussion around breakfast time but I didn’t think that was realistic.  This is the least bad time we could come up with. Last year we had 60-70 people attend.  These are the items that were specific things that I could work on: The first question was whether to increase transparency around individual votes of Board members.  We approved this at the Board meeting the following day.  The only caveat was that if the Board is given confidential information as a basis for their vote then we may not be able to disclose individual votes.  Putting a Director in a position where they can’t publicly defend the reason for their vote is a difficult situation.  Thanks Kendal! Can we have a Board member discretionary fund?  As background, I took a couple of people to lunch so we could have a quiet place to talk.  I bought lunch but wasn’t able to expense it back to PASS.  We just don’t have a budget item for things like this.  I think we should.  I would guess the entire Board would like it also.  It was in an earlier version of the budget but came out as part of a cost-cutting move to balance the budget.  I’d like to see it added back in but we’ll have to see. I know there were a comments about the elections.  At this point we had created the Election Review Committee.  I’ve already written at length about this process. Where does IT work go?  PASS started to publish our internal management reports starting in December 2010.  You can find them on our Governance page.  These aren’t filtered at all and include a variety of information about IT projects.  The most recent update had roughly a page of updates related to IT.  Lots of the work was related to Summit and the Orator tool that we use to manage speaker submissions. There were numerous requests that Tina Turner not be repeated.  Done.  I don’t think we’ll do anything quite like that again.  We had a request for a payment plan for Summit.  We looked into this briefly but didn’t take any action.  We didn’t think the effort was worth the small number of people that would use it.  If you disagree, submit this on our Summit Feedback site and get some votes. There were lots of suggestions around the first-timers events – especially from first timers.  You can find all our current activities related to first-timers at the First Timers page on the Summit web site.  Plus links to 34 (!) blog posts on suggestions for first-timers.  And a big THANK YOU to Confio and Red Gate for sponsoring this. I hope you get the chance to attend.  These events are very helpful to me as a Board member.  I like being able to look around the room as comments are being made and see the audience reaction.  It helps me gauge the interest in an idea. • Could my 64-bit server be somehow identifying itself as a 32-bit server?

  Has anyone ever heard of a 64-bit OS identifying itself as a 32-bit OS? We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 development server. We've been trying to activate it with a product key from MSDN, but it keeps telling us the the key is invalid. I've opened a ticket with MSDN for this. Then something odd happened -- I tried to install a 64-bit version of SQL Server 2005. After it extracted, we got this message: This version of hotfix.exe is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program... Now, we're pretty sure this is a 64-bit OS. Computer Properties says: System Type: 64-bit Operating System Also, we have both a "Program Files" and a "Program Files (x64)" directory. I don't know how the product key activator or the SQL install program attempts to divine the type of OS, but could it be...wrong?

• How to import in BIDS more than one SSIS package in one shot!

  Have you ever wanted to add more than one Integration Services existing package (e.g. 20 packages) in a SSIS project? Well, you may suppose that an Open Dialog supports multiple files selection to import more than one file at a time ... BIDS Open Dialog doesn’t allow this, you can just select a single file! Hence the loss of valuable time spent to import the packages one at a time. Few days ago I learned a trick that solves the problem, thanks to this post by Matt Masson. Just copy all the packages to import from Windows Explorer (Ctrl + C): Then just right click on the SSIS Packages folder of the Integration Services project and make a simple Past (CTRL + V): So “auto-magically” you’ll have all those packages imported in your Integration Services project!! What can I say... this feature was well hidden!

• Run database checks but omit large tables or filegroups - New option in Ola Hallengren's Scripts

  One of the things I've always wanted in DBCC CHECKDB is the option to omit particular tables from the check. The situation that I often see is that companies with large databases often have only one or two very large tables. They want to run a DBCC CHECKDB on the database to check everything except those couple of tables due to time constraints. I posted a request on the Connect site about time some time ago: https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/611164/dbcc-checkdb-omit-tables-option The workaround from the product team was that you could script out the checks that you did want to carry out, rather than omitting the ones that you didn't. I didn't overly like this as a workaround as clients often had a very large number of objects that they did want to check and only one or two that they didn't. I've always been impressed with the work that our buddy Ola Hallengren has done on his maintenance scripts. He pinged me recently about my old Connect item and said he was going to implement something similar. The good news is that it's available now. • Providing a public Web-Hosting service on MS Windows - advice and resources

  Are there any resources offering advice on how to setup a microsoft based web-hosting service? I currently offer LAMP hosting with cPanel, but there is some demand for IIS & SQL Server. As far as I can tell MS Windows Web Server 2008 R2 edition allows unlimited IIS connections. And a per-processor license for MS SQL Server Web Edition 2008 also permits unlimited connections. Where I am falling down is that I can't figure out how to get "unlimited" Active Directory users. I can't use 2008R2 Web Server edition for AD, so I will need the 2008R2 standard edition, I think. Does Microsoft have a provision for using AD in an ISP scenario? I am looking at using the cPanel Enkompas system to manage the Windows software, and Enkompas requires AD for user authentication. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

• Building a Redundant / Distrubuted Application

  This is more of a "point me in the right direction" question. I (and my team of 3) have built a hosted web app that queues and routes customer chat requests to available customer service agents (It does other things as well, but this is enough background to illustrate the issue). The basic dev architecture today is: a single page ajax web UI (ASP.NET MVC) with floating chat windows (think Gmail) a backend Windows service to queue and route the chat requests this service also logs the chats, calculates service levels, etc a Comet server product that routes data between the web frontend and the backend Windows service this also helps us detect which Agents are still connected (online) And our hardware architecture today is: 2 servers to host the web UI portion of the application a load balancer to route requests to the 2 different web app servers a third server to host the SQL Server DB and the backend Windows service responsible for queuing / delivering chats So as it stands today, one of the web app servers could go down and we would be ok. However, if something would happen to the SQL Server / Windows Service server we would be boned. My question - how can I make this backend Windows service logic be able to be spread across multiple machines (distributed)? The Windows service is written to accept requests from the Comet server, check for available Agents, and route the chat to those agents. How can I make this more distributed? How can I make it so that I can distribute the work of the backend Windows service can be spread across multiple machines for redundancy and uptime purposes? Will I need to re-write it with distributed computing in mind? I should also note that I am hosting all of this on Rackspace Cloud instances - so maybe it is something I should be less concerned about? Thanks in advance for any help!

• Observable Adapter

  .NET 4.0 introduced a pair of interfaces, IObservable<T> and IObserver<T>, supporting subscriptions to and notifications for push-based sequences. In combination with Reactive Extensions (Rx), these interfaces provide a convenient and uniform way of describing event sources and sinks in .NET. The StreamInsight CTP refresh in November 2009 included an Observable adapter supporting “reactive” event inputs and outputs.   While we continue to believe it enables an important programming model, the Observable adapter was not included in the final (RTM) release of Microsoft StreamInsight 1.0. The release takes a dependency on .NET 3.5 but for timing reasons could not take a dependency on .NET 4.0. Shipping a separate copy of the observable interfaces in StreamInsight – as we did in the CTP refresh – was not a viable option in the RTM release.   Within the next months, we will be shipping another preview of the Observable adapter that targets .NET 4.0. • Accessing SSRS Report Manager on Windows 7 and Windows 2008 Server

    Here is a problem I was emailed last night   Problem   SSRS 2008 on Windows 7 or Windows 2008 Server is configured with a user account that is a member of the administrator's group that cannot access report Manager without running IE as Administrator and adding  the SSRS server into trusted sites. (The Builtin administrators account is by default made a member of the System Administrator and Content Manager SSRS roles).   As a result the OS limits the use of using elevated permissions by removing the administrator permissions when accessing applications such as SSRS     Resolution - Two options   Continue to run IE as administrator, you must still add the report server site to trusted sites Add the site to trusted sites and manually add the user to the system administrator and content manager role Open a browser window with Run as administrator permissions. From the Start menu, click All Programs, right-click Internet Explorer, and select Run as administrator. Click Allow to continue. In the URL address, enter the Report Manager URL. Click Tools. Click Internet Options. Click Security. Click Trusted Sites. Click Sites. Add http://<your-server-name>. Clear the check box Require server certification (https:) for all sites in this zone if you are not using HTTPS for the default site. Click Add. Click OK. In Report Manager, on the Home page, click Folder Settings. In the Folder Settings page, click Security. Click New Role Assignment. Type your Windows user account in this format: <domain>\<user>. Select Content Manager. Click OK. Click Site Settings in the upper corner of the Home page. Click security. Click New Role Assignment. Type your Windows user account in this format: <domain>\<user>. Select System Administrator. Click OK. Close Report Manager. • Windows Azure Emulators On Your Desktop

  Many people feel they have to set up a full Azure subscription online to try out and develop on Windows Azure. But you don’t have to do that right away. In fact, you can download the Windows Azure Compute Emulator – a “cloud development environment” – right on your desktop. No, it’s not for production use, and no, you won’t have other people using your system as a cloud provider, and yes, there are some differences with Production Windows Azure, but you’ll be able code, run, test, diagnose, watch, change and configure code without having any connection to the Internet at all. The best thing about this approach is that when you are ready to deploy the code you’ve been testing, a few clicks deploys it to your subscription when you make one.   So what deep-magic does it take to run such a thing right on your laptop or even a Virtual PC? Well, it’s actually not all that difficult. You simply download and install the Windows Azure SDK (you can even get a free version of Visual Studio for it to run on – you’re welcome) from here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsazure/cc974146.aspx   This SDK will also install the Windows Azure Compute Emulator and the Windows Azure Storage Emulator – and then you’re all set. Right-click the icon for Visual Studio and select “Run as Administrator”:    Now open a new “Cloud” type of project:   Add your Web and Worker Roles that you want to code:   And when you’re done with your design, press F5 to start the desktop version of Azure:   Want to learn more about what’s happening underneath? Right-click the tray icon with the Azure logo, and select the two emulators to see what they are doing:          In the configuration files, you’ll see a “Use Development Storage” setting. You can call the BLOB, Table or Queue storage and it will all run on your desktop. • Bash script for mysql backup - error handling

  I'm trying to backup a bunch of MyISAM tables in a way that would allow me to rsync/rdiff the backup directory to a remote location. I've came up with a script that dumps only the recently changed tables and sets the date of the file so that rsync can pick up only the changed ones, but now I don't know how to do the error handling - I would like the script to exit with a non 0 value if there are errors. • Restore database to the point of disaster

  This is really basic, but so often overlooked and misunderstood. Basically, we have a database, and something goes south. Can we restore all the way up to that point?
