• Is it possible to run a MIDP application under Android

  The Google Market offers an application purporting to run J2ME MIDP applications on the Nexus One. I have tried this application but it only appears to run MIDP applications that are downloaded from particular web sites; it does not seem capable of picking up a MIDP application that is stored on the SD card in the phone. I have suggested to the developers that they might like to add such functionality, but they have not been particularly responsive to my messages. So I would like to build my own MIDP runner for Android and would like to see if I can find a pointer as to where to start, or even whether this is possible. The MIDP application in question was supplied on CD along with a security camera system and permits remote viewing and remote control over the security system. Clearly it wasn't built with the Android platform in mind. However, if it is possible somehow to run MIDP applications on Android (perhaps by creating some kind of sandbox environment for example) then I'd be quite keen to develop it.

• iPhone application launch time guidelines

  Please point me to the iPhone application launch time guidelines. I see that there is a hard limit of ~24 seconds. OS kills application if it did not started in that time with the message: com.bundle.id failed to launch in time There is also a QA article on this. (24 seconds is the time until OS on my phone kills the app.) But I think that there should be a shorter soft limit somewhere in the docs. However, my google-fu failed me and I was not able to find it. Any help?

• How to have onSearchRequested not open a web browser.

  I have a button in my app. When it is pressed I call the onSearchRequested() method. When this is called the stock search box comes up so the user can type some junk in there. When they press "Go" I need the results returned back to my application but instead the stock browser is opened and a google search is performed. How can I tell it to return the results to my application instead. • How to build an interactive search engine web interface using python

  I have build a static web interface for searching data from some tables in my PostgreSQL database. The query website consists of a simple textfield for entering the search term, the result website presents the results as a simple html table. The server side code for searching the PostgreSQL database and returning the results is written in python using psycopg2. Now I would like to add some interactive "Ajax features" to my search engine. When entering the search term I would like to be able to see a list of possible search terms like Google does it. On the results page, I would like to be able to sort the table showing the results. What would be the easiest/recommended way to implement these features for my search engine web site? Do I need a full-fledged web framework like Django for that?

• Getting really weird long Contact Group names

  When looking at the Contact Groups on Google Contacts or in the People application of my HTC Legend phone, I get the groups names ok eg: Friends, Family, VIP, Favorite etc... But in my application I get really wrong names such as "Family" became "System Group: Family" "Friends" became "System Group: Friends" "Favorite" became "Favorite_5656100000000_3245664334564" I use the below code to read these values: public Cursor getFromSystem() { // Get the base URI for the People table in the Contacts content // provider. • What do you do when every possible business idea is already taken?

  I have a bit of free time and lots of enthusiasm for software and the web. I want to make a start-up, to sell kind of product or online service, but I'm having a hard time coming up with business ideas that haven't already been implemented. For example, I thought of making an e-ordering website for ordering food from restaurants online. Good thing I typed it into Google, because the market is already full of hundreds of websites doing the same thing and competing heavily. The same thing has happened with so many other business ideas I've become excited and passionate about - they're all taken. What's your response to this? Do you agree that all the good ideas seem to be taken? Or do you think there is room for new businesses, and that I'm just not thinking (or looking) hard enough? Have you ever tried idea after idea, only to find that it was already being done, and you had to move onto something else?

• Response.Redirect() will not redirect on Internet Explorer

  Hi, I am using Response.Redirect("someurl",true); in the page_preInit event to redirect all the requests that come to a page. It works fine on Firexox, but if i access the page from internet explorer 7/8, it says page can not be found and will not redirect to new URL. Any idea why this happens?? Update: I tried giving a radom URL in the redirect such as google.com and it works fine. Actually the URL I am trying to redirect is not accessible on my machine, it is on another VPN. I guess IE will not change the URL on the addressbar if it can not access the URL. Firefox on the other hand changes the address on the address bar.

  Ok so my new gig is high performance video (think Google streetview but movies) - the hard work is all embedded capture and image processing but: I was looking at the new MS video offerings to display content = Windows Media Foundation. Is anyone actually using this ? There are no books on the topic. The only documentation is a developer team blog with a single entry 9 months old. I thought we had got past having to learn an MS api by spying on the com control messages! Is it just another wrapper around the same old activeX control?

• How to do a pop-up window with textfields in Objective-C?

  In the iPhone Objective-C app, I want to pop-up a window (which is smaller than the main view, and the app does not stop running) when a button is tapped, with textField for the user to input text, and dismiss it when it is done. This is widely used but I really cannot google the relevant content out. What view should I use to connect it with the button? AlertView (which seems you cannot add dialogue in), ModalView?   Hello I just can't get this thing. How is ZeroClipboard supposed to work? Why does it need to move the flash-element over the copied text?   I've found the symbol :=: in some Clarion code and I can't seem to figure out exactly what it does. The code was written by a previous developer many years ago, so I can't ask him. I also have not been able to find any results for "colon equals colon" in Google.   I'm creating an iTunes clone in Cocoa (don't ask why, it's not evil) and I want to be able to sync my iPod with it. This means: music, photos, videos and podcasts. I couldn't really find anything, since Google only shows articles about iPod touch and iPhone programming, but I'm actually creating a desktop application for Mac OS X, and I also want to be able to sync click-wheel iPods.   I have a flash based game that has a high score system implemented with a SOAP service. There are prizes involved and I want to prevent someone from using FireBug or similar to discover the webservice path and submit fake scores. I considered using some kind of encryption on the data but am aware that someone could decompile the swf and work out how I did it. I also considered using an IP whitelist but since the incoming data will come from the users IP and not the servers that won't work. (I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here...) I know that there is a tried and tested solution for this, but I don't seem to be asking google the right questions to get to it. Any help and suggestions will be appreciated, thank you

  im sure you guys must have seen the shift happens video series. here's a link to them : http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=shift+happens&search_type=&aq=f also, the recent hungry beast video about google, which can be found here: (SO doesnt allow new users more than one hyperlink, so please search on youtube for this one) what i'd like to ask you guys is this: is there a program that enables such videos to be made quickly or is it really just the creative genius of the respective authors? i think vidoes like these are extremely useful when you want to make an impact and would find many uses for such a program in my line of work. im hoping somebody can point me in the right direction. ps. i DO know of animoto, so please dont suggest that :P the problem with animoto is that it doesnt allow text manipulation like these videos. to be fair, that is a great product in itself, but im sure if you take a look, you'll see the difference that im talking abuot.

  I am new to javascript and I just wanted to convert a string into a format that a person like me can read. Here is an example of what I am trying to do... string2size(string){ //some awesome coding I have no clue how to make return awesomeAnswer } now the return should give me something like 56 bytes or 12kb or 1mb depending how much the string is. so if the string is... string = "there was an old woman who lived in a shoe"; then string2size(string) should return something like 3kb. Now I know there has been a utf8 talk and I wouldn't object to and addition of that to the function. I have tried google and Yahoo searches but they talk of using php but I really need it for javascript. I do thank anyone for their time. -Teske

  Hi, I'm trying to control Windows Services that are installed in a remote computer. I'm using the ServiceController class. I have this: ServiceController svc = new ServiceController("MyWindowsService", "COMPUTER_NAME"); With this, I can get the status of the Windows Service like this: string status = svc.Status.ToString(); But I can't control the Windows Service (by doing svc.Start(); or svc.Stop();). I get the following exception: Cannot open Servicexxx service on computer 'COMPUTER_NAME' That's normal, I suppose there is something to do with access permissions. But how? I've looked into Google but didn't find what I was looking for. However I often read something related to impersonation, but I don't know what that means. NB: The local and remote computers are both running Win XP Pro. Thanks.

• Referencing Environment Variables in web.xml

  I'm pre-packaging a JSP web-app that relies on some file path settings found within web.xml. These settings are unknown at packaging time, because they reference a path the customer will set when deploying the entire application (of which the web-app is a management interface). It seems that the easiest way to avoid tokens and file modifications in my installer script, is to ask the user for an install location, set this location as an environment variable (e.g JAVA_HOME), and have web.xml always reference that variable. Is there a way to reference an environment variable value from within web.xml? Google searches lead to the J2EE method of SETTING environment variables from ejb xml files.
