• Is it possible to call Javascript's onsubmit event programatically on a form?

  In Ruby on Rails, I'm attempting to update the innerHTML of a div tag using the form_remote_tag helper. This update happens whenever an associated select tag receives an onchange event. The problem is, <select onchange="this.form.submit();">; doesn't work. Nor does document.forms[0].submit(). The only way to get the onsubmit code generated in the form_remote_tag to execute is to create a hidden submit button, and invoke the click method on the button from the select tag. There seems to be some confusion. So, let me explain. The basic problem is that submit() doesn't call the onsubmit() code rendered into the form. I'm not sure which is worse though, sending a phantom click to an invisible submit button or calling eval on the getAttribute('onsubmit') call after removing the return call with a javascript string replacement!

• Javascript Closures - What are the negatives?

  Question: There seem to be many benefits to Closures, but what are the negatives (memory leakage? obfuscation problems? bandwidth increasage?)? Additionally, is my understanding of Closures correct? Finally, once closures are created, can they be destroyed? I've been reading a little bit about Javascript Closures. I hope someone a little more knowledgeable will guide my assertions, correcting me where wrong. Benefits of Closures: Encapsulate the variables to a local scope, by using an internal function. The anonymity of the function is insignificant. This assignment seems to keep the outerFunc open, in what I would like to call a persistent state. Everytime myFunc is called, the return is executed. In this case, the return is the internal function. Something really interesting is the localization that occurs when defining local variables. Notice the difference in the first alert between global_num1 and global_num2, even before the variable is trying to be created, global_num1 is considered undefined because the 'var' was used to signify a local variable to that function. -- This has been talked about before, in the order of operation for the Javascript engine, it's just nice to see this put to work. Globals can still be used, but local variables will override them. Notice before the third myFunc call, a global variable called local_count is created, but it as no effect on the internal function, which has a variable that goes by the same name. Conversely, each function call has the ability to modify global variables, as noticed by global_var3. Post Thoughts: Even though the code is straightforward, it is cluttered by alerts for you guys, so you can plug and play. I know there are other examples of closures, many of which use anonymous functions in combination with looping structures, but I think this is good for a 101-starter course to see the effects. The one thing I'm concerned with is the negative impact closures will have on memory. Because it keeps the function environment open, it is also keeping those variables stored in memory, which may/may not have performance implications, especially regarding DOM traversals and garbage collection. I'm also not sure what kind of role this will play in terms of memory leakage and I'm not sure if the closure can be removed from memory by a simple "delete myFunc;." • Injection of an EJB into a web java class under JBoss 7.1.1

  I am trying to build a website using JBoss 7.1.1 and RESTeasy. I have managed to constructed and deploy and EAR with a both a WAR and an EJB-JAR contained within: voyager-app.ear META-INF/MANIFEST.MF META-INF/application.xml META-INF/jboss-app.xml lib/voyager-lib.jar voyager-adm.war voyager-ejb.jar voyager-web.war So far things are very simple. voyager-adm.war & voyager-lib.jar are empty (just the manifest file) but I know that I'm going to have code for them shortly. There is just one Stateful EJB - HarbourMasterBean (with just a local interface) and a few Database Entity Beans in the EJB jar file: voyager-ejb.jar META-INF/MANIFEST.MF META-INF/persistence.xml com/nutrastat/voyager/db/HarbourMasterBean.class com/nutrastat/voyager/db/HarbourMasterLocal.class com/nutrastat/voyager/db/PortEntity.class com/nutrastat/voyager/db/ShipEntity.class As far as I can tell the EJBs deploy correctly because the database units are created and the log shows that the publication of some HarbourMaster references: java:global/voyager-app/voyager-ejb/harbour-master!com.nutrastat.voyager.db.HarbourMasterLocal java:app/voyager-ejb/harbour-master!com.nutrastat.voyager.db.HarbourMasterLocal java:module/harbour-master!com.nutrastat.voyager.db.HarbourMasterLocal java:global/voyager-app/voyager-ejb/harbour-master java:app/voyager-ejb/harbour-master java:module/harbour-master The problem lies in getting the HarbourMaster EJB injected into my web bean. • Prevent lazy loading in nHibernate

  Hi, I'm storing some blobs in my database, so I have a Document table and a DocumentContent table. Document contains a filename, description etc and has a DocumentContent property. I have a Silverlight client, so I don't want to load up and send the DocumentContent to the client unless I explicity ask for it, but I'm having trouble doing this. I've read the blog post by Davy Brion. I have tried placing lazy=false in my config and removing the virtual access modifier but have had no luck with it as yet. Every time I do a Session.Get(id), the DocumentContent is retrieved via an outer join. I only want this property to be populated when I explicity join onto this table and ask for it. Any help is appreciated. • How do I pass session variables from one domain to another in PHP

  Hi everyone, I have encountered a situation where I need to pass $_SESSION variables from one domain to an iFrame page from another domain. I have spent the last 16 days trying various methods to no avail. I think that the only logical way would be to encode the variables in the url that calls the iFrame and decode them in th iFrame page. I am not sure how to go about this and I am looking for any samples, assistance etc that I can find. Thanks for any and all suggestions. Here is an example of what I am trying to do... • Update to Easy Slider 1.7 made all my JQuery code stop working.

  I'm pretty novice as a JQuery user goes. I've got some experience implementing different plugins but would be lost trying to customize my own. I can't share the exact site details with you due to a NDA, so I hope someone can give me a little help. I've got a project due today (Just HTML/CSS/JQuery). It has a lightbox, show/hide login menu and a slider is Easy Slider 1.5. Everything was working together, until I attempted to update to Easy Slider 1.7 (see link on same page, I'm too new to post more than 1 link). When I did so, JQuery stopped working for all the plugins. I've attempted to revert back to the original state, by undoing my work (didn't do much), ad JQuery remains broken. Firebug Error Console shared no errors. I can't find anything in the code no matter how hard I look at it. Can anyone help me troubleshoot this JQuery problem? Delivery is supposed to be tonight for the project. • Insert HTML into a page with AJAX

  Hi there, i'm currently developing a website and i need that the pages loads dinamicallly based on what actions the user does. Example: if the user clicks on the button 'Settings' an ajax funcion will load from an external page the code and will put into the div with tag 'settings'. • Passing unknown amounts of variables using through a string string and eval and multiple functions a

  I'm not sure how best to describe this problem... In short, I want to use object literal to allow me to pass a random amount of variables in any order to a function. Whilst this is not big deal in theory, in my code, this object literal is passed to a second function call on_change. on_change works comparing an element inner HTML to a string. if it is the same, it sets a time out of to call the function again (this is sort of/almost recursive, but the function dose actually get to end before it is called again). if the elements inner HTML is different from the string, then the third parameter is executed. this will either be a function or a string. either way it will execute. I have tested load_xml function it is able to call alert(param.xpos) and get the correct response. I can even added in a check for being undefined so that rest of the times I cam load_xml I don't get swamped with alerts. The load_xml function first set up the on_change function, then calls the function to load the content to a hidden div. Once the AJAX request has updated that DIV, the on_change function should now call the parse_xml function. This pulls out the information from the xml file. How ever... The idea of this object literal param is that it can tell this parse_xml function to ignore certain things. on_change("window_" + this.id + "_cont_buffer", "", "Window_manager.windows[" + this.id + "].parse_xml('" + param + "')"); this is part of load_xml. it works perfectly fine, even with the param bit in there. except, parse_xml dose not seem to be able to use that parameter. I have been able to get it to a point where parse_xml can alert(param) and give [object object] which I would of thought meant that the object litteral had been passed through, but when I try and call alert(param.xpos) I get undefined. I know this is a pig of a problem, and I could get around it by just having the function take a zillion boolean parameters, but its just not practical or elegant. I'm sure you will need to ask me plenty more questions before I can solve this. I will post more complete code, I just cut it down to what is actually going on. Thanks

• Help to restructure my Doc/View more correctly

  Edited by OP. My program is in need of a lot of cleanup and restructuring. In another post I asked about leaving the MFC DocView framework and going to the WinProc & Message Loop way (what is that called for short?). Well at present I am thinking that I should clean up what I have in Doc View and perhaps later convert to non-MFC it that even makes sense. My Document class currently has almost nothing useful in it. I think a place to start is the InitInstance() function (posted below). I only have one doc and one view. I feel like I am going about it backwards with GetNextDoc() and GetNextView(). I'm tired of feeling embarrassed about my code. I either need correction or reassurance, or both. :) Also, all the miscellaneous items are in no particular order. • Resizing Images In a Table Using JavaScript

  Hey, all. I apologize beforehand if none of this makes sense, or if I sound incompetent... I've been making webpages for a while, but don't know any JavaScript. I am trying to make a webpage for a friend, and he requested if I could write some code to resize the images in the page based on the user's screen resolution. I did some research on this question, and it's kind of similar to this, this, and this. Unfortunately, those articles didn't answer my question entirely because none of the methods described worked. Right now, I have a three-column webpage with 10 images in a table in the left sidebar, and when I use percentages for their sizes, they don't resize right between monitors. As such, I'm trying to write a JavaScript function that changes their sizes after detecting the screen resolution. The code is stripped from my post if I put it all, so I'll just say that each image links to a website and uses a separate image to change color when you hover over it. Would I have to address both images to change their sizes correctly? I use a JavaScript function to switch between them. Anyway, I tried both methods in this article and neither worked for me. If it helps, I'm using Google Chrome, but I'm trying to make this page as cross-browser as possible.   $15/hr. I know it's not much but... Hi. I'm looking for an ASP.NET tutor. I want to use a remote desktop application so we can see each others screens and use Skype or phone to communicate with. You won't need to come up with any lessons or anything like that. I was thinking we could spend an hour or two each time we logged in to build a decent sized website from scratch. That's basically it. I'm a beginner with about 2 months experience with ASP.NET so we won't have to start from the very beginning, but pretty close. I wanted this site to have a little complexity to it and not just a website for beginners, but something I could study for a while. I'll pay you through PayPal or some other method if you prefer. By the way, it doesn't have to be a website that we work on together. I'll listen to other suggestions too. Maybe we could use an open source site/app to walk-through and study and modify. I've looked at 'My Web Pages Starter Kit 1.30', 'SubText 2.1.2', 'nopCommerce 1.5', and some others. They were all beyond me, and I couldn't make sense of any of the source code. But if you use and are really familiar with an open source app/site that I can download, we could study that. Here are some technical specs about the site I'd like to build/study: ASP.NET 2.0+ (preferably 3.5+, but I don't really care) C# / VB.NET ( don't really care, I suck at both. This is more about ASP.NET and helping me understand the structure of an ASP.NET website and the .NET framework in general. ) SQL Server ( I have SQL Server 2008 express and would someday like to learn how to use this thing. ) JavaScript / AJAX ( at least some use of this ) XML ( basically, I'd like to spend some time in the web.config file, and have some sense of what's going on in there. ) ASP.NET Folders ( I'd like to work with all of the ASP.NET folders if possible: App_Code, App_GlobalResources, etc.. and understand what does/doesn't go in them. Hopefully we can build more than one theme too. ) Assemblies ( how do you create a .dll and use it across different websites? maybe you could suggest a third party .dll that we could use ) Web Service ( I read about this once but didn't really get it ) I can't think of anything else but the above will definitely keep me busy. Hopefully we could make use of a lot of the server controls too (the nav controls gave me a headache when I tried customizing them). Is someone willing to help?   What I am trying to do is inject through XML almost the same way that is done through A @PersistenceContext annotation. I am in need of this because of the fact I have different entity managers I need to inject into the same DAO. The databases mirror one another and I would rather have 1 base class and for instances of that base class then create multiple classes just so I can use the @PersistenceContext annotation. Here is my example. When a user starts writing a tag, a drop-down list should appear beneath the textarea with other tags that begin with the same string. Right now, I have it working where if a user types the hash key (#) the list will show up with the most popular #hashtags. When a tag is clicked, it is inserted at the end of the text in the textarea. I need the tag to be inserted at the cursor location instead. • Why do I get a segmentation fault while redirecting sys.stdout to Tkinter.Text widget in Python?

  I'm in the process of building a GUI-based application with Python/Tkinter that builds on top of the existing Python bdb module. In this application, I want to silence all stdout/stderr from the console and redirect it to my GUI. To accomplish this purpose, I've written a specialized Tkinter.Text object (code at the end of the post). The basic idea is that when something is written to sys.stdout, it shows up as a line in the "Text" with the color black. If something is written to sys.stderr, it shows up as a line in the "Text" with the color red. As soon as something is written, the Text always scrolls down to view the most recent line. I'm using Python 2.6.1 at the moment. On Mac OS X 10.5, this seems to work great. I have had zero problems with it. On RedHat Enterprise Linux 5, however, I pretty reliably get a segmentation fault during the run of a script. The segmentation fault doesn't always occur in the same place, but it pretty much always occurs. If I comment out the sys.stdout= and sys.stderr= lines from my code, the segmentation faults seem to go away. I'm sure there are other ways around this that I will probably have to resort to, but can anyone see anything I'm doing blatantly wrong here that could be causing these segmentation faults? It's driving me nuts. Thanks! PS - I realize redirecting sys.stderr to the GUI might not be a great idea, but I still get segmentation faults even when I only redirect sys.stdout and not sys.stderr.   Hi all, On my way in understanding the transaction-type attribute of persistence.xml, i came across an issue / discrepency between hibernate-core and JPA-hibernate which looks weird. I am not pretty sure whether it is a missing implementation with JPA of hibernate. Let me post the comparison between the outcome of JPA implementation and the hibernate implementation of the same concept.   I am having issue with the following: I can't seem to keep the link I am selecting in each repeated item. The word "this" is getting lost. the Var event_id works for each element, but the var $something is undefined? Why is that, Ideally I wanted to do a switch statement but same issue, can't seem to get it to know what link I click and the elements around it to do the action.
