• Thoughts on iPhone, Flash, IE

  It’s interesting to see the debate caused by the iPhone debate over Flash.  In the new version of the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement, Apple bans Flash and Monotouch: 3.3.1 — Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited). • How do I configure OpenVPN for accessing the internet with one NIC?

  I've been trying to get OpenVPN to work for three days. After reading many questions, the HOWTO, the FAQ and even parts of a guide to Linux networking, I cannot get my an Internet connection to the Internet. I'm trying to set up a OpenVPN server on a VPS, which will be used for: secure access to the Internet bypassing port restrictions (directadmin/2222 for example) an IPv6 connection (my client does only have IPv4 connectivity, while the VPS has both IPv4 and native IPv6 connectivity) (if possible) I can connect to my server and access the machine (HTTP), but Internet connectivity fails completely. I'm using ping 8.8.8.8 for testing whether my connection works or not. Using tcpdump and iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -j LOG, I can confirm that the packets reach my server. If I ping to 8.8.8.8 on the VPS, I get an echo-reply from 8.8.8.8 as expected. When pinging from the client, I do not get an echo-reply. The VPS has only one NIC: etho. It runs on Xen. Summary: I want to have a secure connection between my laptop and the Internet using OpenVPN. If that works, I want to have IPv6 connectivity as well. Network setup and software: Home laptop (eth0: 192.168.2.10) (tap0: 10.8.0.2) | | (running Kubuntu 10.10; OpenVPN 2.1.0-3ubuntu1) | wifi | router/gateway (gateway 192.168.2.1) | INTERNET | VPS (eth0:1.2.3.4) (gateway, tap0: 10.8.0.1) (running Debian 6; OpenVPN 2.1.3-2) wifi and my home router should not cause problems since all traffic goes encrypted over UDP port 1194. • How difficult is it to setup a mailserver?

  I want a secure mail solution, as I am looking to move away from Google and other parties looking into my private data. How much of a PITA is it to setup my own mailserver? Should I go for an external provider with a good privacy policy and encrypted data instead? I have a VPS running Debian (with a dedicated IP + reverse DNS), and I'm a fairly capable Linux administrator, having setup a couple of webservers, home networks, and looking over the shoulder of sysadmins at work. The security I currently have on the VPS is limited to iptables and installing/running the bare minimum of what I need (currently basically irssi and lighttpd). When setting up a mail server, is there a lot of stuff to take into consideration? Will my outgoing mail be marked as spam on other servers if I don't implement a number of solutions? Will reliable spam filtering be difficult to setup? Can I easily encrypt the stored mail?

• How have you saved green by going green?

  For the purpose of this question, I am interested in server/datacenter related hardware. Have you had any measureable amount of ROI by swapping existing hardware to more "green" or energy efficient hardware? For example, VMWare says you can reduce energy consumption by up to 80% by using virtualization. I have also heard of a cooling solution from HP which is suppose to reduce a small amount of engery usage (<25% I think). Google has also done something by integrating a UPS into their power supplies to reduce energy consumption. Any real world experiences would be great, but if you have any details on initial cost, savings and pay off time about what changes were make that would fantastic. I am not only interested in virtualization, I am interested in anything.

  SmartAssembly, formerly {smartassembly}, version 5 is now available as an Early Access Build. You can get it here: http://www.red-gate.com/MessageBoard/viewforum.php?f=116 We're having second thoughts about the name change though. It isn't that we like the curly brackets, far from it. The trouble is that the first rule of product naming is to name a product by what it does. SmartAssembly may make an assembly smarter, but that's not something people really google for. The trouble is, I can't think of a better name for it. That's because SmartAssembly really does two completely separate things: Obfuscates Sets up your assembly for the awesome exception reports which get sent to you whenever your application crashes. You may have been (un?)lucky enough to see one in reflector if you use it. This is what those exception reports look like when they arrive back with the developer: Look at all those local variables! If you ask me, this is much cooler than the obfuscation. So obviously we don't want to call it just "Red Gate Obfuscator" or something, because it doesn't do justice to the exception reporting. What would you call it?

  I'm trying to compile using the llvm-3.1 package. I'm running 12.04 x64 (3.2.0-26 kernel) && 12.10 (3.5.0-4) x64 backported llvm-3.1 from quantal, then debian experimental. • IKE2 VPN Server Certificate expired. How do I issue a new one

  This is a completely new area for me. We are getting "13801: IKE Auth Credentials are unacceptable" messages when connecting to our VPN service on a small Windows 2008R2 domain. Doing a google search has lead me to investigate the Certificate Authority. I've looked in the Certificate Authority | Issued Certificates And the one for the VPN Reconnect is marked as expired since a couple of hours a ago. Can some one tell me what the step I need to take to regen/reissue a simillar cert please? FYI:The client certs are not expiring for a number of years so they are fine.

  I have two operating systems installed on my notebook computer, Windows Vista and Ubuntu Linux. When I boot up, I'm presented with a bootloader which allows me to choose which one I want to load. I'm interested in sharing each operating system's file system with the other, such that I could access my Windows files from Linux and vice-versa.   An in-depth look at the interaction of people, processes, and technologies in the transition to a service-oriented architecture. Author's Note This article presents a profile of a fictitious organization, NOPERU. The story of NOPERU as told in this article is actually a collage of the events at some dozen organizations that I have been involved with over the past few years. None of these organizations sport all the characteristics of NOPERU - but all of them have gone through or are going through a similar transition as described here and all aspects of this article were taken from real life at one or usually many of these organizations. Background NOPERU (National Organization for Permits for Emissions and Resource Usage) is a public organization that continues to transform in terms of its business, organization and technology. Changing business requirements; new interaction channels; and increasing demands for more flexibility, faster throughput and lower costs drive these transformations, while technological evolution and new architecture patterns enable the change. NOPERU chose Oracle Fusion Middleware as the technology platform to implement the new architecture and required applications. This article takes a close look at NOPERU's journey from its origins in the early 1990s as a largely paper-based entity with regional databases and client-server Oracle Forms applications. Its upcoming business objectives are introduced: what is required of the organization and what the higher goals behind these requirements are. The architecture roadmap is described at a high level as well as drilled down to a service oriented design. Based on the architecture roadmap and the business requirements and NOPERU went through a technology selection to determine the technology stack with which the future would be realized in terms of IT. The article discusses that selection and details the projects subsequently planned (and executed to date). The new architecture and technology as well as the introduction of an Agile development method have had substantial consequences for the IT organization, the processes and individual staff members. The approach NOPERU has adopted with regard to the people and the organization is portrayed. Finally, the article discusses many conclusions that NOPERU has drawn that may benefit itself and other organizations. Introducing NOPERU NOPERU is a national organization charged with issuing permits for excessive emissions (i.e., carbon dioxide) and disproportionate usage of such resources as energy or water. Anyone-whether a commercial enterprise, government agency or private person--who emits or consumes more than what is considered "fair usage" requires such a permit. When someone builds an outdoor heated swimming pool, for example, or open-air terrace heating, such a permit needs to be obtained. When a company installs new, energy-intensive equipment, such as water boilers or deep freezers, it too needs to get a NOPERU permit. Government-sponsored projects at every level that involve consumption of large quantities of fresh water or production of high volumes of emissions must turn to NOPERU for a permit. • First Look - Oracle Data Mining

  In his blog, JT on EDM, James Taylor shares his analysis of Oracle Data Mining, including its new GUI and Exadata integration. While Oracle Data Mining has been available for a while, it is now easier to access and try via the Amazon Cloud. Using the Oracle 11gR2 Data Mining Amazon Machine Image (AMI), you can launch an Oracle Data Mining-enabled instance directly through Amazon Web Services (AWS) and connect to it using the Oracle Data Miner graphical user interface. The new Oracle Data Mining GUI, which will be available to beta customers soon, provides more graphics, the ability to define, save and share analytical "work flows" to solve business problems, and provides more automation and simplicity. Taylor comments that, "the UI looks to have a nice look and feel including graphical model development flows, easy access to the data, nice little micro graphs when browsing data records and more." On using Oracle Data Mining with Exadata, Taylor writes, "Oracle says that the use of the ODM routines in the Exadata kernel is faster than running a native ODM model in the database by a factor of 2 and that this increases as more joins are used. This could mean that ODM outperforms even third party in-database analytics." Taylor concludes his blog with a positive overall review, stating that "ODM is a nice product for Oracle database customers and well worth looking into. The new UI will only make it more so." • Configuring a Genius GW-7200 Access Point

  I came across an access point we had a few years ago. I'm now trying to get it set up to work on our network. here are a couple of pictures: http://twitpic.com/194u06/full http://twitpic.com/194u0v/full I have plugged this into our network via the network port on the back. I set up a DHCP reservation, based on the MAC address on the back of the access point, however I cannot ping it, nor access the web interface. I've held down the reset button for 10 seconds, to see if that would do anything. Google doesn't come up with anything on the matter :-(

I searched it on google and they said it had something to do with ubuntu. So i deleted the partition. After restarting my laptop i get the: unknown filesystem grub rescue error. • how do i set index priorty on nginx in order to load index.html before wordpress' .php files

  hello there, gents. I'm an absolute beginner in linux, the CLI, as well as nginx and wordpress. i'm trying to make a 'coming soon' landing page that will take priority over the main wordpress installation i just set up. I want to make .html load before php, or get information on the Best Practices approach to this. I just now realized i could easily use the wordpress' generic "under construction" page and modify it. I'm sure it has one; i'm sure there's a plugin. Stats linode 1024 ubuntu 12.04 nginx 1.6.1 single wordpress installation (for now) set up using easyengine, but going to restart and configure nginx for my linode specifically probably. I managed to find one piece of instruction on how to change the httpd file to specify priority for apache 2, but did not find the same documentation for nginx. If it's not on the first page of google, then serverfault needs the question answered! Viva la Server Fault first page results!

• Vmware sphere setting up external network

  I've just setup vmware vsphere 5 on a remote server (rented dedicated server). I've added my first VPS (centos 5.8) barebones. It's not finding any IP (internal or external) on boot. I've had an extra external IP assigned to my server that I wanted to use on the VPS. I tried editing the eth0 config and adding the IP in there and turning off the DHCP, but it can't find any IP or ping google or do any networking type things. How do I route the IP to my VPS so I can access it remotely?

• How is my ISP DNS hijacking AFTER all these precautions?

  In IE9 when I search for anything my ISP hijacks google search and I get this result. To add complication to this I've already changed the default DNS servers (OpenDNS) months ago. This only happens in IE9; even after machine reboots and cache flushing. I even have my router (dd-wrt) intercepting all requests for DNS and I am still getting this result. I have all extensions disabled and there are no toolbars. This is IE9 from M$. This is not malware; it happens all machines with IE installed (even IE7/8).

• Apache localhost problem

  I have set up Apache on my Windows 7 PC. Now I have it working fine on the PC, by going to localhost or the IP (192.168.1.71). However when I go to my Mac I try to connect to it via its IP and it doesn't connect. I have also tried this on another computer. Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to 192.168.1.71 Now is there something wrong with the code in the Apache httpd file? EDIT: I have also tried to ping the IP address and it works fine.

• Project Corndog: Viva el caliente perro!

  During one of my last semesters in college we were required to take a class call Computer Graphics which tried (quite unsuccessfully) to teach us a combination of mathematics, OpenGL, and 3D rendering techniques.  The class itself was horrible, but one little gem of an idea came out of it.  See, the final project in the class was to team up and create some kind of demo or game using techniques we learned in class.  My friend Paul and I teamed up and developed a top down shooter that, given the stringent timeline, was much less of a game and much more of 3D objects floating around a screen. The idea itself however I found clever and unique and decided it was time to spend some time developing a proper version of our idea.  Project Corndog as it is tentatively named, pits you as a freshly fried corndog who broke free from the shackles of fair food slavery in a quest to escape the state fair you were born in.  Obviously it's quite a serious game with undertones of racial prejudice, immoral practices, and cheap food sold at high prices. The game itself is a top down shooter in the style of 1942 (NES).  As a delicious corndog you will have to fight through numerous enemies including hungry babies, carnies, and the corndog serial-killer himself the corndog eating champion!  Other more engaging and frighteningly realistic enemies await as the only thing between you and freedom. Project Corndog is being developed in Visual Studio 2008 with XNA Game Studio 3.1.  It is currently being hosted on Google code and will be made available as an open source engine in the coming months.

• How to install compiler and binutils on FreeNAS?

  I'd like to run a backup tool, duplicity, that apparently requires a cc compiler and binutils. I'm able to locate and install the required BSD packages for python, gcc, and dependencies from ftp2.freebsd.org. However, I can't find binutils. How are binutils installed on a system like FreeNAS? I'm working with FreeNAS 0.70 (based on FreeBSD 7.2). I see several packages with binutils in the name, but it's not clear any of them are for my i386 platform. e.g. I see i386-rtems-binutils-2.19.1, but I can't find any info that suggests this is correct for my platform. Google results mention it's for realtime systems.

• How to fix steam issues when playing games

  So I got call of duty black Ops on my PC (Windows 7, 64bit, 8gig ram, 3.0ghz processor) but when I want to start the game I get this error message. Steam must be running to play this game. I did a quick Google search for what steam was and it turns out its a game software technology for copy protection, patents, game-play and this like that. I don't know how to fix this. I have tried reinstalling over and over but no success at all. Is it like direct X you could just download and install or what...Any ideas will be GREATLY appreciated.

• SO-overflow induced passivity - how to cope?

  After not really working on my pet project for a while, I discovered Stackoverflow and upon perusing it more intensely I was quite amazed. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so when I found eye-openers here highlighting many of the mistakes I made, I first wanted to fix everything. However, it's a pet project for a reason: I'm self-taught and I'm studying psychology, so programming skills can never become priority one (though it often helps, even in this field). Issues that stuck out were numerous security issues (e.g. CSRF-prevention and bcrypt eluded me) not object-oriented (at least the PHP part, the JS-part mostly is) no PHP framework used, so many of my DIY takes on commonly-tackled components (auth, ...) are either bad or inefficient really poor MySQL usage (no prepared statements, mysql extension, heard about setting proper indices two days ago) using mootools even though JQuery seems to be fashionable, so there's more probably always going to be better integration with services I'd like to use (like google visualization) So, my SO-induced frenzy turned into passivity. I can't do it all (soon) in the rather small amount of spare time I can spend on working on my project. I can leave some of the issues be in good conscience (speed stuff: an unfinished & unpublished project will never become popular, right?). No clear conscience without good security though and if I don't use a framework for auth and other complex stuff I'll regret having to do it myself. One obvious answer would probably be going open-source, but I think the project would need to become more impressive before others would commit to it. I can't afford to employ someone either. I do think the project deserves being worked on, though. How should I tackle it anyway? What's the best practice for little-practice people?

  One of the main new features being touted in Office 2010 is the ability to upload documents to the Web for sharing and collaboration. Today we look at using Office Upload Center to help manage your uploaded documents. Microsoft Office Upload Center  When you upload an Office 2010 document to the web, a handy tool to manage them is the Office Upload Center. It’s a way to see what is being uploaded or what might have failed to reach the servers. It lets you know if a document failed to upload for some reason. In this case it looks like the incorrect credentials were entered when signing into Windows Live. Click on the Resolve button to get a list of actions you can take to get things corrected.   You can access the Upload Center from the icon which appears on the System Tray when uploading documents. Right-click the icon to control notifications, pause uploads, and access its settings. In the Settings section you can choose how Upload Center displays notifications, select the number of days to keep files in Cache, and delete currently cached files. If you find yourself uploading several documents to the web during the day, the Office Upload Center is a nice feature for managing them. • Are there any good apps for managing vCard vcf files?

  I've just got an Android handset and the import of the SIM contacts from my old phone has left them in a mess; lack of capitalisation, funny character substitutions, odd delimiters etc. I have exported the contacts list as a vcf and while I could manually edit this file, I was really after a desktop app that could do formatting, search & replace etc. There are Android apps that do this but, as much as I like the phone's UI, the prospect of sorting hundreds of contacts via it doesn't exactly fill me with joy. A quick Google just threw up lots of questionable download sites, hoping someone can suggest a lightweight alternative
