• Grid based collision - How many cells?

  The game I'm creating is a bullet hell game, so there can be quite a few objects on the screen at any given time. It probably maxes out at about 40 enemies and 200 or so bullets. That being said, I'm splitting up the playing field into a grid for my collision checking. Right now, it's only 8 cells. How many would be optimal? I'm worried that if I use too many, I'll be wasting CPU power. My main concern is processing power, to make the game run smoothly. RAM is not a big concern for me.

• Ubuntu 12.04 wont install on Macbook

  I've installed Ubuntu on my Macbook before but something went wrong with the updater. So, I had to backup my HDD and format it and reinstall OS X Lion. But here's the thing: Ever since I re-installed my OS I've been trying to get Ubuntu back on the HDD. I partitioned it to 40 GB and set the file system to Ext4. I also recently created a swap partition too and it seems to install correctly. After i installed rEFIt it just has this cute little penguin sitting there. I rebooted and tried to go back to Ubuntu and the penguin still shows up but this time a black screen pops up and it asks me to insert a bootable device and press any key. I'm not sure why this is happening. This is probably the 5th time I've tried to install it. I've even used a different Ubuntu ISO but it still won't boot after the installation.

  I've been having numerous problems with connectivity through WiFi. It had been working for a few days and now it doesn't. On top of that around 40% of every time I turn on the laptop it shows "System running in low-graphics" error and I'm unable to view the desktop (sometimes not even able to access terminal), therefore having to manually power-down until it finally works.   I'm the admin assistant of the CTO and our organization has recently experienced a lot of growth. Within six months, we have merged with another organization and our Dev team has grown from 8 to 16, with another 8 people in QA. What we're dealing with now is a highly technical individual, with little patience, managing a much larger team than he's accustomed to, 40% of which is junior as well as an increase in the number of projects. Needless to say, my boss is being pulled in too many directions at once. How can I help him manage his workload and his team so that the team feels they're getting enough help and support and remain effective?   I have been having problems with wireless on Ubuntu 10 and above, Mint 11 and above. The problem is in the driver for the wireless... I can see that there is no driver installed and yet it works but reduced a lot, for example: on windows 7 ultimate 100% on distance of 1 meter (currently running) Mint Cinnamon 15 on same distance 70% when it goes under the 40 % it simply disconnects and than takes a lot of time to connect again I am new to Linux and I don't know anything about programming, yet I love the interface and look of the OS but don't want to reject it for couple of problems. There is, however, a problem with brightness control on laptop, it shows the notification and slider but with no effect The question is: Can somebody explain to me where to download and how to install the ar9285 driver for atheros wireless card laptop acer emachines eme529? or can someone explain this to me only for the LINUX MINT 15 http://www.jrhenkelmann.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=34 because the synaptic's interface is different than of mint 15 I KNOW this is Ubuntu community but the problems persist in all Linux versions

• Splitting Logic, Data, Layout and "Hacks"

  Sure, we all heard of programming patterns such as MVVM, MVC and such. But that isn't really what I'm looking into as Layout, Data and Logic is already pretty much split up (XML-Layout markup, Database, insert your language of choice here). The platform I am developing for is hard to maintain over the updated versions and older OSes. The project significantly grew up over the last few months and dealing with different platform versions really is a pain. For example simply disabling an user interface control for all existing versions took me around 40 lines of code in the logic layer, wrangling around with invocation, delegation, singletons that provide UI handling and so on. Is there a clean way to keep track of those "hacks" by maybe excluding it into separate classes or even packages? Should I overwrite existing framework code in order to handle my requirements correctly? If so, does that concept have a name?

• Slow Resume After suspend having chrome running with many tabs

  I usually use chrome and Firefox for browsing. I also open many tabs (around 40 in both some times). The problem I have occurs when I resume the PC after having suspended it: It takes from 2 to 5 minutes sometimes to just get back normally. Does this have to do with memory usage not properly resuming? Is it a bug in Chrome/Firefox or Ubuntu itself? Note that I just upgraded from 10.10 to 11.10 and I was having the problem on both releases, which makes me guess that it has to do with Ubuntu not resuming well if some memory-heavy apps were running before the suspend occured.

• Cable connection takes a lot to establish

  I've just installed Xubuntu on my computer. It's all OK, but I have a problem with the internet connection: when I boot the PC and I login into Xubuntu it says to me "Cable connection disconnected" or "No cable connection". After a while (like 40 seconds) it connects to the internet and then I'm able to surf the net. I was wondering: why it takes so long to establish a connection?   My computer freezes after some minutes while watching dvb tv from kaffeine but only when i use the cpu scaling utilities to enter cpu on performance mode. It freezes completely repeating a small sound loop from tv. cant go to terminal etc. I have a phenom II 3,40 ghz dualcore cpu , but i unlocked the other two cores so now its quadcore. On Windows i don't have any problems and i use the performance mode all the time and never breaks. I'm really dissapointed....

  I am NOT doing test driven development and I write my test classes after the actual code is written. In my current project I have a test coverage of(Line coverage) %70 for 3000 lines of Java code.(Using JUnit, Mockito and Sonar for testing) But while I feel actually I am not covering and catching %70 of the problems that can occur. So my question is in theory is that possible to have a %100 Line coverage but in reality it is meaningless because of low quality of the test code and maybe a %40 well written test code is much better than a bad %100 coverage? or we can always say line coverage more or less gives the percentage of all covered issues?

  Hardware: Intel i7 AMD Radeon HD 6970 SSD with plenty of space 6 GB RAM Software OpenJDK 6, 7, and Oracle Java 7 (reproducible with all three) AMD Catalyst 12.8 and open source driver (reproducible with both) Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 and older Minecraft 1.3.2 vanilla and older On this setup I am getting rubbish frame rates after a short while of playing, dropping from about 45-55 to 15 in a couple of minutes. CPU use is 40-45 even when rendering the opening screen at 1920x1280, and gameRenderer is using about 90% CPU when playing. Rather than trying to eke out a few more FPS out of an obviously broken rendering pipeline, I really hope to find a solution to make the GPU render Minecraft.

• SSD becomes hot, disk failure warning

  I have a two weeks old SSD (Kingston SSDnow 64GB). Yesterday, the computer shutdown twice and after rebooting I was bombarded with disk failure warnings. I usually take such warnings serious (and backed up), but skeptical. After cooling down, the laptop boots again and the only red Smart value was the temperature (Ubuntu did not show the temperature of failure, but the at that time 29°). After refreshing the Smart status and doing a "self test", everything is green. Before contacting Kingston support, I would like to know whether it could be due to a software issue: Is it possible that it is false alarm, and how can I check? I installed Ubuntu 12.04 32bit and took care of alignment. I supposed Ubuntu set up with optimal settings for SSDs, how can I check that there was no mistake?   I Have tried two things in three places to see if it works please do help me out. Two methords: 1) replacing @ with %40 2) replacing @ with \@ Three places: 1) export with the .bashrc file 2) editing /etc/apt/apt.conf and setting acquires there 3) using gconf editor and setting the values in /system/http_proxy and setting authentication name and password and checking the use_authentication checkbox. still there is no success and i still get 407 error when trying wget or apt-get update. please do help me, been stuck with this for three hours now. also, i read somewhere that creating a file in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d and then creating a 01proxy file with acquire might work. I tried that also, but it doesnt work. Please help.
