  • What performance indicators can I use to convince management that I need my development PC upgraded?

    At work, my PC is slow. I feel that I can be way more productive if I just wasn't waiting for Visual Studio and everything else to respond. My PC isn't bad (dual-core, 3GB of RAM), but there is a lot of corporate software and whatnot to slow everything down and sometimes lock it up. Now, some developers have begun getting Windows 7 machines with 8 GB of RAM. Of course, I start salivating at this. However, I was told that I "had to justify" why I should get a new machine. I can think of a lot of different things, but I am curious as to what every one else on SO would have to say. NOTE: Ideally, these reasons should be specifically related to .NET development in Visual Studio on a Windows machine. This isn't a "how can I make my machine faster" question.

  • PC reboots spontaenously: debugging tips [closed]

    I swapped my core 2 duo for a quad core recently, and generally things run fine, but every now and then my computer just restarts. I don't even get a blue screen (Vista 32). Core temp isn't a problem. My thinking is that my power supply is inadequate, but I haven't been able to test that (one idea was to under clock the cpu to see if that helped, but going up in speed was the only simple thing to do in the BIOS) Two cases where I semi-consistanly get problems: - Borderlands windowed after some period of time (and some other games, but Borderlands does it pretty regularly) - watching a video (e.g. quicktime/vlc) and having another video running Another thought is non-cpu heat? Maybe the graphics card? Any thoughts on how to track this down appreciated. Thanks!

    I've heard people say a few different things about the DefaultValue attribute including: "It sets the value of the property before anything else uses it." "It doesn't work for autoproperties." "It's only for decoration. You must manually set actual default values." Which (if any) is right? Does DefaultValue actually set default values? Are there cases where it doesn't work? Is it best just not to use it?

  • Magento products will not show in category

    I've recently been tasked with the build and deployment of a large Ecommerce site. In the past we've had to use the clients legacy X-cart installation for redevelopment (too far integrated with their existing work flow). We'd heard good things about Magento, so I've set up a test install to get to grips with it. After a couple of initial issues, there is a live development site which displays categories on the default theme. The problem we've hit now is that products don't display..! After a lot more in-depth research into this, all I've been able to discover is that quite a number of developers endorse using other solutions entirely, with the other 50% saying after the steep learning curve the platform is as wonderful as we'd initially been led to believe. Now, my test category is showing, so I know this is configured properly. I've set up three test products and associated them with this (all done following the Magento user guide), checked double checked and thrice checked the products are enabled and visible individually, yet still the front end says the category has no products in it. I've cleared the cache repeatedly, reset everything possible many times in index management - no products show up. I have to make a call tomorrow morning on whether we're going ahead with Magento. If I can't even get it to show products I'm going to have to go with something with a more established track record and more community support available. Can anybody advise what could possibly be wrong here?

    Hi i use wshttpbinding in my service Config and message security. my app works fine but after 10 or 20 min when client call any method of service, an exception throw cuz my security token will be expired, and connection cant be work. one solution is re_create connection to make new token (but i cant use this cuz my service contain datacontext and if i re_create service, datacontext will be new) other solution is change security type from message to transport (i try this solution but nothing change cuz other exception throw)

  • Using Nuxeo, how do I lock down a page so that it redirects to the login page if the user is unauthe

    I have been put on to a project using Nuxeo, late in it's lifecycle and need to change a few things before it goes live. I am having trouble finding out where I need to look to lock down a Nuxeo based application so that a user is redirected to the login page if they are unauthorised and access a restricted page. Can someone please shoot my some direction on where this sort of logic is kept or defined?

  • Creating an n tiered application

    I am researching architecture for a project that will be started next year. It is mainly a c# web app, but there will be a service layer so that it can talk to our facebook/iphone app. There are a few long running processes, which means that I will be creating a windows process that can handle those. I’m thinking of putting the entire app in the windows service instead of just the long running processes. Asp - wcf - bll Vs Asp - bll I know this will be more scalable. But it is probably overkill as everything will be running on the same box, even the database. This could change down the road if the server can’t handle the traffic like marketing says it will. I don’t have access to production hardware, just my crappy testing box and my local machine. Has anyone decided to go down this route? But mostly, what is the best way to test both methods to get some metrics?

  • Conditional themes in Visual Studio 2008

    Can I have different visual studio themes associated to different solutions? Here's my problem. I have two files with sames names that have almost identical contents from two different solutions, open simultaneously. Of course, I have the first solution open and the file from the second solution is opened from explorer and has no connection to the first solution what so ever. Is there any way I can distinguish the the file that belongs to the solution from the other file, just by a different tab color or something like that and without hovering over the tab to look up the path.   • How would you structure your entity model for storing arbitrary key/value data with different data t

    I keep coming across scenarios where it will be useful to store a set of arbitrary data in a table using a per-row key/value model, rather than a rigid column/field model. The problem is, I want to store the values with their correct data type rather than converting everything to a string. This means I have to choose either a single table with multiple nullable columns, one for each data type, or a set of value tables, one for each data type. I'm also unsure as to whether I should use full third normal form and separate the keys into a separate table, referencing them via a foreign key from the value table(s), or if it would be better to keep things simple and store the string keys in the value table(s) and accept the duplication of strings. Old/bad: This solution makes adding additional values a pain in a fluid environment because the table needs to be modified regularly. The querying code still needs to check for nulls to determine which data type the field is storing.   • Use CSS3 nth-child to alternate the float of images within DIV tags...

    Basically, what I'm trying to create is a page of div tags, each has an image inside them and I'm trying to use CSS3's nth-child to alternate the float of that specific image. But for the life of me, I can't get the nth-child to locate those images. Here is my code so far... When I have more than 4 elemets in my list, my headers gets repeated every 4 elements (see the image:) - I don't want this; once is enough.   • How can my application submit salesforce case with custom fields?

    I have an application that submits bugs for multiple customers to multiple destinations. I would like this application to include salesforce as a destination. I have web reference to the Enterprise WSDL and I am able to create cases for salesforce. This works great until I want to include user defined custom fields as part of the case. The custom fields are strongly typed with a __c prefix for my instance of salseforce. But I will not have the liberty of updating my web service with my customers instance of salesforce. How can I submit a salesforce case with custom fields that are not defined in the WSDL? Should I not be using the Enterprise WSDL?

    I recently had this problem on a test: given a set of points m (all on the x-axis) and a set n of lines with endpoints [l, r] (again on the x-axis), find the minimum subset of n such that all points are covered by a line. Prove that your solution always finds the minimum subset. The algorithm I wrote for it was something to the effect of: (say lines are stored as arrays with the left endpoint in position 0 and the right in position 1) algorithm coverPoints(set[] m, set[][] n): chosenLines = [] while m is not empty: minX = min(m) bestLine = n[0] for i=1 to length of n: if n[i][0] <= m and n[i][1] > bestLine[1] then bestLine = n[i] add bestLine to chosenLines for i=0 to length of m: if m <= bestLine[1] then delete m[i] from m return chosenLines I'm just not sure if this always finds the minimum solution. It's a simple greedy algorithm so my gut tells me it won't, but one of my friends who is much better than me at this says that for this problem a greedy algorithm like this always finds the minimal solution. For proving mine always finds the minimal solution I did a very hand wavy proof by contradiction where I made an assumption that probably isn't true at all. I forget exactly what I did. If this isn't a minimal solution, is there a way to do it in less than something like O(n!) time? Thanks
