• Career guidance/advice for Junior-level Software Engineer [closed]

  I have quite a few questions on my mind, so please bare with me. Please don't feel obligated to answer all of them, any as you choose will do. I'd appreciate if you could share some insight on any of these. Before I begin, some context: I currently have almost two years of professional experience as a Software Engineer, mainly developing software in Java. At this point, I feel that I have reached the peak in my career growth at the current company I am at and therefore I am looking for a new job, ideally again, as a Software Engineer. I have been interviewing for the past few months casually but have not had luck with companies I have a passion for. So, in no particular order - 1) In general, what are your thoughts on having graduate degrees in CS / Software Engineering. How much does it influence a salary increase, and do you think it's beneficial when working on real-world problems? I get the sense that a graduate degree in the field is trivial unless you really have a passion for research. 2) In general, in professional practice, how often had you have to write your own data structures and "complex" algorithms from scratch? In my own work, I have found myself relying mainly on third-party frameworks and the Java standard library to implement solutions as per business requirements. What are your thoughts on this? 3) In terms of resume, I feel the most ambivalent here. I want to be able to "blemish" my resume to a certain extent so that it stands out from others', but at the same time I do not want to over-exagerate my abilities. How do you strike a balance here? For example: I say that I am proficient in Java with data structures and algorithms. This is obviously a subjective and relative statement. I've taken the classes in my undergrad, and I've applied it in my work experience. What I feel as "prociency" can be seen as junior-level to others. How do you know what to say? Most of the time, recruiters (with no technical background) will be looking for keywords that stand out. This leads me to my next question (4). 4) Just from interviewing for the past few months (and getting plenty of rejections), I've come to realize that I may not be as proficient in data structures and algorithms as I thought I was. Do you think it's a good idea to remove the "proficient in java/data structure and algorithms"? I feel that being too hoenst on the resume will impede me from scoring opportunities to even have an interview with top-notch companies. What are your thoughts? 5) What is the absolute "must-have" knowledge going into a technical interview? I've been practicing several algorithmic and data sturcture problems now, and I feel that my abilities to solve arbitrary problems efficiently has not gotten significantly better. Do you think these abilities are something innate - it's either you have in you, or you don't? How can you teach yourself to learn, if you will? 6) How easy is it to go from industry/function to the next? I work mainly with backend technologies and I'm now interested in working with the frontend, i.e javascript,jquery,php or even mobile development. In your own experience, how did you not get pidgeon holed in your career? I feel that the choices you make now ultimately decide your future. As cliche as it sounds, I think it may be true. Here's what I mean: you've worked mainly as a backend engineer, people are interested in you doing the same thing since you've already accumulated experience in that function. How do get experience in a new function if people won't accept you because you don't already have it? It's a catch 22, you see... Are side projects the only real way to help you move from one function to another that you're truly interested in? For example: I could start writing my own mobile applications, even though I've worked mainly on the backend. Thanks so much for the long read. • svn vs git for the sole developer? [closed]

  If I am sole developer (I do not work in a team) working from my laptop (Windows OS and Linux VM) and backing up data to the cloud (Dropbox etc), then is git still better than svn for my version control needs? I was thinking not since I wont need any of git's distributed features. But is git such a better approach to version control that I should consider moving anyway? With so many articles saying how people are moving from svn to git? I was wondering, if they are talking about large or open projects with teams of developers vs the sole developer. What do you think?

• Changes in Language Punctuation [closed]

  More social curiosity than actual programming question... (I got shot for posting this on Stack Overflow. They sent me here. At least i hope here is where they meant.) Based on the few responses I got before the content police ran me off Stack Overflow, I should note that I am legally blind and neatness and consistency in programming are my best friends. A thousand years ago when I took my first programming class (Fortran 66) and a mere 500 years ago when I tokk my first C and C++ classes, there were some pretty standard punctuation practices across languages. I saw them in Basic (shudder), PL/1, PL/AS, Rexx even Pascal. Ok, APL2 is not part of this discussion. Each language has its own peculiar punctuation. Pascal's periods, Fortran's comma separated do loops, almost everybody else's semicolons. As I learned it, each language also has KEYWORDS (if, for, do, while, until, etc.) which are set off by whitespace (or the left margin) if, etc. Each language has function, subroutines of whatever they're called. Some built-in some user coded. They were set off by function_name( parameters );. As in sqrt( x ) or rand( y ); Lately, there seems to be a new set of punctuation rules. Especially in c++ where initializers get glued onto the end of variable declarations int x(0); or auto_ptr p(new gizmo); This usually, briefly fools me into thinking someone is declaring a function prototype or using a function as a integer. Then "if" and 'for' seems to have grown parens; if(true) for(;;), etc. Since when did keywords become functions. I realize some people think they ARE functions with iterators as parameters. But if "for" is a function, where did the arg separating commas go? And finally, functions seem to have shed their parens; sqrt (2) select (...) I know, I koow, loosening whitespace rules is good. Keep reading. Question: when did the old ways disappear and this new way come into vogue? Does anyone besides me find it irritating to read and that the information that the placement of punctuation used to convey is gone? I know full well that K&R put the { at the end of the "if" or "for" to save a byte here and there. Can't use that excuse here. Space as an excuse for loss of readability died as HDD space soared past 100 MiB. Your thoughts are solicited. If there is a good reason to do this, I'll gladly learn it and maybe in another 50 years I'll get used to it. Of course it's good that compilers recognize these (IMHO) typos and keep right on going, but just because you CAN code it that way doesn't mean you HAVE to, right?

• Cheapest way to to determine if a MySQL connection is still alive

  I have a pool of MySQL connections for a web-based data service. When it starts to service a request, it takes a connection from the pool to use. The problem is that if there has been a significant pause since that particular connection has been used, the server may have timed it out and closed its end. I'd like to be able to detect this in the pool management code. The trick is this: The environment in which I'm coding gives me only a very abstact API into the connection. I can basically only execute SQL statements. I don't have access to the actual socket or direct access to the MySQL client API. So, the question is: What is the cheapest MySQL statement I can execute on the connection to determine if it is working. For example SELECT 1; should work, but I'm wondering if there is something even cheaper? Perhaps something that doesn't even got across the wire, but is handled in the MySQL client lib and effectively answers the same question?

• Lightning fast forum based around metadata / tags? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What Forum Software should I use? I wonder if anything like this exists. I'd like to add a forum to my site, but instead of the usual forum/subforum/sub-subforum structure, I'd like to use a metadata/tag approach where everything exists as a single directory, and where there's a search field at the top which instantly (<0.5 sec) filters the threads to a particular keyword or keywords. Also, as the admin, I would be able to add highly visible buttons at the top, which can be clicked on for the main categories I choose for the forum (nevertheless, users can also add tags to their own threads outside of these default main tags I supply if they wish). This approach, if done properly, is more powerful, efficient, maintenance free, scalable and friendly than a standard forum, so I was hoping someone had the same idea and made something out of it. It couldn't be that hard. I'd want the speed to be up to (or near) the standard of this: http://forum.dlang.org/ Other forums (e.g.: phpBB) are orders of magnitude worse than that in terms of latency (posting or browsing), and I think that is wrong, even in principle ;)

• multiple godaddy domains to home router then reverse proxy to multiple internal servers [closed]

  I need someone to steer me correctly... advising on all required components. I have multiple domains with godaddy, say site1.com , site2.com, site3.net I have multiple home LAMP servers... one on say, lampsrv1 = 192.168.0.2:8080 (windows) and lampsrv2 = 192.168.0.3:9080 (linux srv2) I would like to have server1.site1.com point to lampsrv1 and server2.site1.com point to lampsrv2 . I may also want server1.site2.com also point to my lampsrv1 as an option. My thinking is - I have a dedicated linux srv1 with a reverse proxy server behind the router, ie Apache or NGINX or equivalent directing to appropriate LAMP server. It's the godaddy subdomains, cnames or redirections, etc I'm having a challenge with for starters... I have tested apache with virtual servers but can't get proxying to work based on host header info... seems to go to one address making me think its actually the apache reverse proxying that's not quite working. Finally to add to this, my router has a dynamic IP but does lease for quite a while but that would be my final piece. So, I'm sure this might be a popular question but can't seem to piece this together. I need someone who has actually configured this scenario to advise but will take other suggestions.... please indicate if you have successfully configured this.

• Screen corruption with 946G / 82945G/GZ [closed]

  Since version 10.04 I have problems with Ubuntu (I think) my graphics card. This problem arises especially when working with graphics or CPU usage much. The problem is that it breaks the GUI as you see in the image and the entire computer is very slow. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 and have a Intel graphics card 945G x86/MMX/SSE2. I used Unity and Gnome 3 with the same results. lspci returns 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

  Been trying to install openVPN on a VPS but come into a few problems when trying to start the openvpn server. So my question is, is it possible for me to update my modules on a VPS and if so how would I do this, or is this something I'll need to try get my host to do? Thanks in advance.

• Dealing with "I-am-cool-and-you-are-dumb" manager [closed]

  I have been working with a software company for about 6 months now. I like the projects I work on there and I really like all the people there except for 1 guy. That guy is technically smart, and he is a co-founder of the company. He is an okay guy in person (the kind you wouldn't want to care about much) but things get tricky when he is your manager. In general I am all okay but there are times when I feel I am not being treated fairly: He doesn't give much thought to when he makes mistakes and when I do something similar, he is super critical. Recently he went as far as to say "I am not sure if I can trust you with this feature". The detais of this specific case are this: I was working on this feature, and I was already a couple of hours over my normal working hours, and then I decided to stop and continue tomorrow. We use git, and I like to commit changes locally and only push when I feel they are ready. This manager insists that I push all the changes to the central repo (in case my hard drive crashes). So I push the change, and the ticket is marked as "to be tested". Next day I come in, he sits next to me and starts complaining and says that I posted above. I really didn't know what to say, I tried to explain to him that the ticket is still being worked upon but he didn't seem to listen. He interrupts me in-between when I am coding, which I do not mind, but when I do that same, his face turns like this :| and reacts as if his work was super important and I am just wasting his time. He asks me to accumulate all questions, and then ask him altogether which is not always possible, as you need a clarification before you can continue on a feature implementation. And when I am coding, he talks on the phone with his customers next to me (when he can go to the meeting room with his laptop) and doesn't care. He made me switch to a whole new IDE (from Netbeans to a commercial IDE costing a lot of money) for a really tiny feature (which I later found out was in Netbeans as well!). I didn't make a big deal out of it as I am equally comfortable working with this new IDE, but I couldn't get the science behind his obsession. He said this feature makes sure that if any method is updated by a programmer, the IDE will turn the method name to red in places where it is used. I told him that I do not have a problem since I always search for method usage in the project and make sure its updated. IDEs even have refactoring features for exactly that, but... I recently implemented a feature for a project, and I was happy about it and considering him a senior, I asked him his comments about the implementation quality.. he thought long and hard, made a few funny faces, and when he couldn't find anything, he said "ummm, your program will crash if JS is disabled" - he was wrong, since I had made sure it would work fine with default values even if JS was disabled. I told him that and then he said "oh okay". BUT, the funny thing is, a few days back, he implemented something and I objected with "But that would not run if JS is disabled" and his response was "We don't have to care about people who disable JS" :-/ Once he asked me to investigate if there was a way to modify a CMS generated menu programmatically by extending the CMS, I did my research and told him that the only was is to inject a menu item using JavaScript / jQuery and his reaction was "ah that's ugly, and hacky, not acceptable" and two days later, I see that feature implemented in the same way as I had suggested. The point is, his reaction was not respectful at all, even if what I proposed was hacky, he should be respectful, that I know what's hacky and if I am suggesting something hacky, there must be a reason for it. There are plenty of other reasons / examples where I feel I am not being treated fairly. I want your advice as to what is it that I am doing wrong and how to deal with such a situation. The other guys in the team are actually very good people, and I do not want to leave the job either (although I could, if I want to). All I want is respect and equal treatment. I have thought about talking to this guy in a face to face meeting, but that worries me that his attitude might get worse and make things more difficult for me (since he doesn't seem to be the guy who thinks he can be wrong too). I am also considering talking to the other co-founder but I am not sure how he will take it (as both founders have been friends forever). • Coding style advice? [closed]

  I'm a newly grad. I've got a lot of complaints from my supervisor at work during code-review sessions with regard to my coding style (Surprise!). I don't know if it's just him being cranky or my style is really that annoying to read. I come from the low-level language world (assembly, mostly), so I've been taught to use bitwise ops and all the cool tricks to do math whenever possible. I also have the habits of doing some other things that've been regarded as "too excessively dense to read". So I'm hoping to get some feedback from any experienced programmers! :) Also how should I justify between code performance and readability? Thanks!!

  As many others, I have been reading Uncle Bob Martins books. More specifically, clean code and then "the clean coder". Now, over the last year he has been producing "code casts" that you can buy for ~20USD a piece. I bought the first episode sometime in mid 2011 and wasnt that impressed, as I really learned nothing new after reading his books. Last night I bought the first episode of test driven development with more or less the same result as last time. Now tonight I gave it one more go and bought TDD part 2 and this one was, IMO, really good. With this post I would like to tip others about his videos and would also like to know what others think. If I only need to update Field1 of the Orders table for some rows based on a condition and Field2 for some other rows based on a different condition then what changes I need to do? 2.) • Which language meets my needs? [closed]

  I am a junior C# developer, working for half a year now. In my company I am working on some enterprise projects and after doing it for quite some time I understood that I dont like enterprise projects. I have my own browser-game written in PHP+MySql with some simple HTML+CSS and I have 300 active (those, who entered the game at least once per 5 days) players currently :) After thinking quite some time I understood that I am interested in: 1). Web-development AND 2). standalone programs (but not enterprise ones). 3). Development for mobile platforms is also nice, Android/iOs. 1st and 2nd categories are what I want the most. Android/iOs is good too. I am NOT interested in big systems which are hard to integrate, I am not interested in enterprise systems. In future I would like to start my own business/projects. I would like to create my own projects or/and create a small programmers company to create and release own products. Please tell me what programming language(s)/technologies would you advice me for it? Thanks alot! UPD: It's NOT a "which language is better" or any flame/holywar generating topic since I ask for language that suits my EXACT needs better. I believe C++ is better for low-level coding, while PHP is good for web-development and Object-C being made for iOs. I am still newbie at programming so dont hate me please.

• How to prevent forum spam [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Make your site anti-bot? I want to prevent spam from overrunning my website, but neither do I want to make the user type in captcha each time they make a post. Any suggestions? Context: My website allows anonymous users to make leave comments on the fly. Comments are randomly displayed, so the more spam = higher chance of it being shown. Need to prevent spam but don't want to have each comment require captcha input.

• Google indexes everything but homepage [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Homepage not showing on Google I own markasoftware.getenjoyment.net. I submitted a sitemap for it, but Google is still not indexing things right: It indexes everything but the homepage!!! I have a JavaScript game on the site and it is even indexing the components of the game, but not the homepage. I checked my homepage at validator.w3.org for HTML5 validation and it passed. I also have a Google webmaster account and it says no indexing errors. What is the problem?

But I'm kind of stunned by the Received: from 83.136.130.41 (IP may be forged by CGI script) part. After I searched a bit, it seems, that this is a special 'feature' of 1und1 Mail servers. Here are my questions: Is it possible that, if I get rid of the 'Ip maybe forged' part, that the Mail is not regarded as spam anymore? If so, Does anyone know, how I can get rid of it in drupal?

• Future of Hadoop? [closed]

  I am a software developer having 4 years experience and little bit of experience in Hadoop. Now I am getting new project and ill be working fully on Hadoop thingy. As Hadoop is still evolving, I would like to know whether Hadoop is really going to be the widely used technology in the future? Will it be something like JEE platform or will it die soon just like some of the other technologies? What do you guys think about Hadoop platform?
