• Ruby: would using Fibers increase my DB insert throughput?

  Currently I am using Ruby 1.9.1 and the 'ruby-mysql' gem, which unlike the 'mysql' gem is written in ruby only. This is pretty slow actually, as it seems to insert at a rate of almost 1 per second (SLOOOOOWWWWWW). And I have a lot of inserts to make too, its pretty much what this script does ultamitely. I am using just 1 connection (since I am using just one thread). I am hoping to speed things up by creating a fiber that will create a new DB connection insert 1-3 records close the DB connection I would imagine launching 20-50 of these would greatly increase DB throughput. Am I correct to go along this route? I feel that this is the best option, as opposed to refactoring all of my DB code :(

• javascript disabling a div or a link? (for a 5-star rating system)

  Basically, I've created a 5-star rating system. Pretty typical. It shows how many stars other people have given the item, and then when a user hovers over the stars, it lights up x number of stars based on how many they're over. It's all run by AJAX. They click 5 stars it automatically adds their 5-star rating to the group. The problem is that after they rate it I want to turn the system off, but I can't seem to be able to do that. I've tried everything I can think of. I've tried using element.disable for the a hrefs and for the div, but it still lets them vote away, over and over again, at least in firefox.... Can anyone help me out with a method to simply "freeze" the stars on what the user voted?? If I need to add code that's cool! I figured it probably wasn't necessary in this situation!

• Using SMO to call Database.ExecuteNonQuery() concurrently?

  I have been banging my head against the wall trying to figure out how I can run update scripts concurrently against multiple databases in a single SQL Server instance using SMO. Our environments have an ever-increasing number of databases which need updating, and iterating through one at a time is becoming a problem (too slow). From what I understand SMO does not support concurrent operations, and my tests have bore that out. There seems to be shared memory at the Server object level, for things like DataReader context, keeps throwing exceptions such as "reader is already open." I apologize for not having the exact exceptions I am getting. I will try to get them and update this post. I am no expert on SMO and just feeling my way through to be honest. Not really sure I am approaching it the right way, but it's something that has to be done, or our productivity will slow to a crawl. So how would you guys do something like this? Am I using the wrong technology with SMO? All I am wanting to do is execute sql scripts against databases in a single sql server instance in parallel. Thanks for any help you can give, Daniel

• PHP APC - Why is loading cached array op codes slow?

  I'm using APC to reduce my loading time for my PHP files. My files load very fast, except for one file where I define more than 100 arrays. This 270 kb file takes 200 ms to load. The rest of the files are full of objects, methods, and functions. I'm wondering: does OP code caching not work as well for arrays? My APC cache should be big enough to handle all of my classes. Currently 40% of my cache is free. My hit rate is 99%. apc.shm_size=32 M apc.max_file_size = 1M apc.shm_segments= 1 APC 3.1.6 I'm using PHP 5.2, Apache 2, and Windows Vista.

• What to do when you are a programmer and have a cold?

  If you have a cold that isn't too bad, does it make sense to still go into the office and get some coding done? Assume a private office, no meetings for the day, and you have some documentation and coding tasks that need to get done. Also assume that you operate on a PTO system, where all days off are "vacation" or PTO. To clarify, should one just not code at all when under the weather? That's what I'm getting at. Will you just kick yourself in your own rear when you go back to deal with code you wrote when you are sick? What is the error defect rate of sick vs non-sick programming hours?

• Looking for a file database

  A few years ago there was a PHP script around called paFileDB. Essentially it created a database of files that end users could download and rate. It would keep track of the number of downloads as well. I am looking for a replacement of this coded in ASP.net C#. For the last week I have been searching around for "asp.net C# file database" and have just gotten how to upload files to a database. I have also search with some other terms. I do not need a full blown CMS like DotNetNuke or SharePoint. All I have been looking for is a system I could easily add to my existing .net C# site. I have thought about coding one myself, but with me being rather busy at work and this being a personal project, I simply do not have the time to code this myself. I hope that you guys can help. • Plotting a graph with GD

  Here it goes. I have been thinking about this for a long time, and havent really been able to put up a proper way to do it yet. I havent implemented anything yet, as im still designing the thing. The idea is that i crawl a website for internal links, i got this settled, its easy, but after the crawling, i end up with an array with lots of links, and how many times those particular link appears on the site that i crawled (and how they're connected). With this huge array, i want to draw a graph somehow. Assuming i can handle the data correctly, the real question here is how i can draw this in a image by the use of the GD library. I figured if theres less than 12 elements, i can align them up on a unit circle spacing them up as a circle and then connecting them accordingly, so anything up to 12 elements shouldn't be a problem, but if theres more than 12, it could be awesome getting them lined up like this Or well, thats just a rough drawing, but i guess its just to prove a point. So i'm here looking for guidance or tips towards getting the math down to getting the stuff lined up in a good way. I have previously made bar-graphs, so i have little experience doing math with GD. If possible, id prefer not using some plotter-library - in the end, it gives me a better understanding on how things are supposed to be.

  Hi guys, I'd like to create a website with similar concept as 'Hot or Not' where users need to sign up to the website and then upload photos. Each photo can be given a description and some additional fields. Other users may comment and rate the photo entries. On top of that, users may favourite/bookmark (and remove) any photo entries and they're accessible via their profile page That's generally how the website will be. Can't decide on a CMS to use Somehow I'm at a crossroad here. I've done some research and found that Joomla has an extension that is able to pull this website off but the thing is I'm not that comfortable with using Joomla. I work with WordPress most of the time, but I can't seem to figure out how would I build this website with WordPress. Would using BuddyPress make it work? Would hiring a plugin developer to customize some plugins work? What do you guys think?

  I'm having trouble locating BlackBerry techical specifications and their website is a mess. They also don't have a number that I can use to easily contact them. This isn't exactly a coding question, but what does the BlackBerry audio API look like, and where can I get technical specifications on audio? Specifically, I'm trying to find out more information on Audio-In, specifically, through the Mic-In on the 3.5 mm jack. • Database indexes - what should they be

  Most of my database tables have a clear unique index through which lookups are done 90% of the time but I am a bit unsure on this one - I have a table which keeps track of user rating totals for items in my database, I now want to add another table, to track individual ratings with an ip address column to make sure no one can rate something twice. Since I can see this becoming a big, high use table it is important to optimize it correctly. (MYSQL table) This table will have the following fields: rating_id(always - unique), item_id (always - not unique), user_id (optional - not unique), ip_address (always - not unique), rating_value(always - not unique), has_review(bool) Now I envisions 90% the queries going something like this: When a user rates something - select where item_id = x and ip_address = y, (if rows = 0) insert rating When in user account pages - select where ip_address = x or username = y Now none of the fields searched on are unique, can I still use them as indexes (for example item _id and ip_address), can I have two indexes and will this still improve performance over a non indexed table?

  I'm planning to develop a city info site. The web pages will display contents from a constantly updating MySQL database- most probably using a CMS. I am planning to share the same database for a Mobile app related to this. In the pages there are options for using geolocation, rate and comment for the user. I think, this mobile app should work while it's offline too. So how should i deal with data for mobile? Should i use a connection between MySQL and IndexedDB? (I'm not quite sure about this part). • producing a typewriter-like effect

  Android newb here. Please use small words :-) I'd like to simulate typewriter output on my Android. The output being displayed is generated by a game and is somewhat freeform. The effect I want to see individual characters appear at a rate of about 6 characters a second. When a 'carriage return' is seen, I'd like to insert a delay then resume typing on the left. What are some suggestions on views? Would the view of choice for this be a TextView? Even that seems like overkill for this read-only coarsely scrolling output. I saw something on this thread about an AsyncTask. That looks useful. Perhaps my game will write to some manner of buffer, and a subclass of AsyncTask will pull characters out every .15 seconds or so, add them to the TextView, then invalidate() the TextView? Sound like a plan?

• audio error in vmware running mac os x

  simple synchronous loading of an audio file (.mp3) in a cocos2d app makes my vmware disconnect the sound. the error is display bottom right, saying 'error in creating sound stream; sound is disconnected' i read that it might be cause of my vmware's version (mine is 8) but I'm looking for a fix, not to downgrade to another version. before i get that error, the sound on the system works just fine (youtube, etc) the exact code im calling is..   Has anyone used Dabo lately? How does it rate vs Boa Constructor, etc? I'm writing a new Python database app and Dabo looks promising, but what's the real-world scoop on it? • Errors in Decimal Calcs within def clean method?

  I'm attempting a few simple calculations in a def clean method following validation (basically spitting out a euro conversion of retrieved uk product price on the fly). I keep getting a TypeError. Full error reads: Cannot convert {'product': , 'invoice': , 'order_discount': Decimal("0.00"), 'order_price': {...}, 'order_adjust': None, 'order_value': None, 'DELETE': False, 'id': 92, 'quantity': 8} to Decimal so I guess django is passing through the entire cleaned_data form to Decimal method.   So my situation is: I have a 2 modules that have the same structure like that: module Module1 class Config def fee_rate 2 end end end So, say, Module2 would have class Config with the method fee_rate, just with a different value (those are actually implemented in a rails engine, but it shouldn't matter) and then my model can use either Module1 or Module2 to get the fee rate value like that: def config @config ||= "#{module_name.titleize}::Config".constantize.new @config end def get_value config.get_fee * some_other_value end What I'm trying to test is if get_fee function was called on the correct class: "#{model.module_name.titleize}::Config".constantize.any_instance.expects(:get_fee).at_least_once model.get_value and on the line when I call get_value I get the following error - undefined method `*' for nil:NilClass. I'm completely lost now, so I'd appreciate any help and ideas.

• Options for header in raw byte file.

  I have a large raw data file (up to 1GB) which contains raw samples from a USB data logger. I need to store extra information relating to the file (sample rate, description, trigger point, last seek position etc) and was looking into adding this as a some sort of header. The header file should ideally be human readable and flexible so I've so far ruled out some sort of binary serialization into a header. I also want to avoid two separate files as they could end up separated when copied or backed up. I remembered somebody telling me that newer *.*x Microsoft Office documents are actually a number of files in a zip. Is there a simple way to achieve this? Could I still keep the quick seek times to the raw file?

• Is the last digit of a phone number random?

  I have a telephony app which has a prompt which requires user choice. I made the app select one of 10 different phone prompts based on the last digit of the caller's phone number. Then I measure whether the user responds to the prompt (accept) or decides to skip to the next step (reject). I thought this would work well enough as a random selection, but I think I may be wrong. What I'm finding is that the exact same prompt has a dramatically different response rate (25% vs 35%) for two different last digits. Now I'm curious why this is. Does anyone know how phone numbers are assigned and why the last digit would be significant?

• Send data to webserver from C#, what's the most efficient way?

  I am sending gps coordinates from a windows mobile phone to a webserver using a basic program I wrote in C#. The problem is the data plan on the phone only allows 4 MB per month. I was planning on updating the location every 10 seconds. Currently I am just creating a webrequest every 10 seconds to a php page on the server and the coordinates are passed over in the url, the php page saves them to the database. This generates about 1K of data per request, at this rate I will hit my data limit in less than a day. Is there a more efficient way to do this?

• Wordpress paths issue

  I have set a crawler up in wordpress which grabs stocks data and writes to file which when a user enters a symbol/ticker the variable is read and if it matches the data of a previous crawl for that particular companies data will echo the text file on page, if no data is found the crawler then sets off grabs it and writes to file to save for the next time that symbol is used. The problem im having is that everything works groovey apart from one thing, when the content is written to file it saves it in the WP root and not inside a subfolder of the theme, basicaly this means that root becomes untidy very quickly and also should the theme be used on another site then its not practical as some important info is missing. I have tried bloginfo and absolute both return the same failure. • How many bits can be transfered through Ethernet at each time?

  I am writing a networking application. It has some unxpected lags. I need to calculate some figures but I cant find an information - how many bits can be transferes through Ethernet connection at each tick. I know that the resulting transfer rate is 100Mbps/1Gbps. But ethernet should use hardware ticks to sync both ends I suppose. So it moves data in ticks. So the question is how many ticks per second or how many bits per one tick used in ethernet. The actual connection is 100 Mbps full-duplex.
