  • Out of memory when creating a lot of objects C#

    - by Bas
    I'm processing 1 million records in my application, which I retrieve from a MySQL database. To do so I'm using Linq to get the records and use .Skip() and .Take() to process 250 records at a time. For each retrieved record I need to create 0 to 4 Items, which I then add to the database. So the average amount of total Items that has to be created is around 2 million. while (objects.Count != 0) { using (dataContext = new LinqToSqlContext(new DataContext())) { foreach (Object objectRecord in objects) { // Create a list of 0 - 4 Random Items and add each Item to the Object for (int i = 0; i < Random.Next(0, 4); i++) { Item item = new Item(); item.Id = Guid.NewGuid(); item.Object = objectRecord.Id; item.Created = DateTime.Now; item.Changed = DateTime.Now; dataContext.InsertOnSubmit(item); } } dataContext.SubmitChanges(); } amountToSkip += 250; objects = objectCollection.Skip(amountToSkip).Take(250).ToList(); } Now the problem arises when creating the Items. When running the application (and not even using dataContext) the memory increases consistently. It's like the items are never getting disposed. Does anyone notice what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance!

  • The question about the basics of LINQ to SQL working

    - by Alex
    I just started learning LINQ to SQL, and so far I'm impressed with the easy of use and good performance. I used to think that when doing LINQ queries like from Customer in DB.Customers where Customer.Age > 30 select Customer Get all customers from the database ("SELECT * FROM Customers"), move them to the Customers array and then make a search in that Array using .NET methods. This is very inefficient, what if there are hundreds of thousands of customers in the database? Making such big SELECT queries would kill the web application. Now after experiencing how actually fast LINQ to SQL is, I start to suspect that when doing that query I just wrote, LINQ somehow converts it to a SQL Query string SELECT * FROM Customers WHERE Age > 30 And only when necessary it will run the query. So my question is: am I right? And when is the query actually run? The reason why I'm asking is not only because I want to understand how it works in order to build good optimized applications, but because I came across the following problem. I have 2 tables, one of them is Books, the other has information on how many books were sold on certain days. My goal is to select books that had at least 50 sales/day in past 10 days. It's done with this simple query: from Book in DB.Books where (from Sale in DB.Sales where Sale.SalesAmount >= 50 and Sale.DateOfSale >= DateTime.Now.AddDays(-10) select Sale.BookID).Contains(Book.ID) select Book The point is, I have to use the checking part in several queries and I decided to create an array with IDs of all popular books: var popularBooksIDs = from Sale in DB.Sales where Sale.SalesAmount >= 50 and Sale.DateOfSale >= DateTime.Now.AddDays(-10) select Sale.BookID; BUT when I try to do the query now: from Book in DB.Books where popularBooksIDs.Contains(Book.ID) select Book It doesn't work! That's why I think that we can't use thins kinds of shortcuts in LINQ to SQL queries, like we can't use them in real SQL. We have to create straightforward queries, am I right?

  • .NET, ASHX, "Server cannot append header after HTTP headers have been sent" after sending PDF Streem

    - by Inturbidus
    I visit my ASHX file, and it outputs a PDF perfectly. If I visit the very same ASHX with a different query string (I append DateTime.Now.Ticks to the end each visit), and I get this error: Server cannot append hader after HTTP headers have been sent. My code is below: copy.CloseStream = false; document.Close(); var r = context.Response; r.ExpiresAbsolute = DateTime.Now; r.BufferOutput = true; r.ContentType = "application/pdf"; r.AppendHeader("Content-Type", r.ContentType); r.AppendHeader("Content-disposition", "inline; filename=" + context.Server.UrlEncode(formType.File_Name)); r.BinaryWrite(copyStream.ToArray()); r.StatusCode = 200; r.End(); originalReader.Close(); copy.CloseStream = true; copy.Close(); There is no other place in this code that headers are sent. You are seeing the entire interaction with the Response object. I've tried to use r.Flush(); and r.End(); I've also tried not sending them if they are already there, but this causes other issues.

  • URL-Encoded post parameters don't Bind to model

    - by Steven Klein
    I have the following Model namespace ClientAPI.Models { public class Internal { public class ReportRequest { public DateTime StartTime; public DateTime EndTime; public string FileName; public string UserName; public string Password; } } } with the following method: [HttpPost] public HttpResponseMessage GetQuickbooksOFXService(Internal.ReportRequest Request){ return GetQuickbooksOFXService(Request.UserName, Request.Password, Request.StartTime, Request.EndTime, Request.FileName); } My webform looks like this: <form method="POST" action="http://localhost:56772/Internal/GetQuickbooksOFXService" target="_blank"> <input type="text" name="StartTime" value="2013-04-03T00:00:00"> <input type="text" name="EndTime" value="2013-05-04T00:00:00"> <input type="text" name="FileName" value="Export_2013-04-03_to_2013-05-03.qbo"> <input type="text" name="UserName" value="UserName"> <input type="text" name="Password" value="*****"> <input type="submit" value="Submit"></form> My question is: I get into the GetQuickbooksOFXService function but my model has all nulls in it instead something useful. Am I doing something wrong?

  • Is it necessary to mysql real escape when using alter table?

    - by cgwebprojects
    I noticed the other day that I cannot bind variables when using PDO with ALTER TABLE for example the following example will not work, $q = $dbc -> prepare("ALTER TABLE emblems ADD ? TINYINT(1) UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT '0', ADD ? DATETIME NOT NULL"); $q -> execute(array($emblemDB, $emblemDB . 'Date')); So is it necessary to use mysql_real_escape string and do it like below, // ESCAPE NAME FOR MYSQL INSERTION $emblemDB = mysql_real_escape_string($emblemDB); // INSERT EMBLEM DETAILS INTO DATABASE $q = $dbc -> prepare("ALTER TABLE emblems ADD " . $emblemDB . " TINYINT(1) UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT '0', ADD " . $emblemDB . "Date DATETIME NOT NULL"); $q -> execute(); Or do I not need to add in mysql_real_escape_string? As the only thing the query can do is ADD columns? Thanks

  • Avoiding repeated subqueries when 'WITH' is unavailable

    - by EloquentGeek
    MySQL v5.0.58. Tables, with foreign key constraints etc and other non-relevant details omitted for brevity: CREATE TABLE `fixture` ( `id` int(11) NOT NULL auto_increment, `competition_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `name` varchar(50) NOT NULL, `scheduled` datetime default NULL, `played` datetime default NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`) ); CREATE TABLE `result` ( `id` int(11) NOT NULL auto_increment, `fixture_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `team_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `score` int(11) NOT NULL, `place` int(11) NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`) ); CREATE TABLE `team` ( `id` int(11) NOT NULL auto_increment, `name` varchar(50) NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`) ); Where: A draw will set result.place to 0 result.place will otherwise contain an integer representing first place, second place, and so on The task is to return a string describing the most recently played result in a given competition for a given team. The format should be "def Team X,Team Y" if the given team was victorious, "lost to Team X" if the given team lost, and "drew with Team X" if there was a draw. And yes, in theory there could be more than two teams per fixture (though 1 v 1 will be the most common case). This works, but feels really inefficient: SELECT CONCAT( (SELECT CASE `result`.`place` WHEN 0 THEN "drew with" WHEN 1 THEN "def" ELSE "lost to" END FROM `result` WHERE `result`.`fixture_id` = (SELECT `fixture`.`id` FROM `fixture` LEFT JOIN `result` ON `result`.`fixture_id` = `fixture`.`id` WHERE `fixture`.`competition_id` = 2 AND `result`.`team_id` = 1 ORDER BY `fixture`.`played` DESC LIMIT 1) AND `result`.`team_id` = 1), ' ', (SELECT GROUP_CONCAT(`team`.`name`) FROM `fixture` LEFT JOIN `result` ON `result`.`fixture_id` = `fixture`.`id` LEFT JOIN `team` ON `result`.`team_id` = `team`.`id` WHERE `fixture`.`id` = (SELECT `fixture`.`id` FROM `fixture` LEFT JOIN `result` ON `result`.`fixture_id` = `fixture`.`id` WHERE `fixture`.`competition_id` = 2 AND `result`.`team_id` = 1 ORDER BY `fixture`.`played` DESC LIMIT 1) AND `team`.`id` != 1) ) Have I missed something really obvious, or should I simply not try to do this in one query? Or does the current difficulty reflect a poor table design?

  • Static Logger in seperate thread?

    - by SirLenz0rlot
    Hi all, I've made my Logger, that logs a string, a static class with a static so I can call it from my entire project without having to make an instance of it. quite nice, but I want to make it run in a seperate thread, since accessing the file costs time is that possible somehow and what's the best way to do it? Its a bit of a short discription, but I hope the idea is clear. if not, please let me know. Thanks in advance! btw: any other improvements on my code are welcome as well, i have the feeling not everthing is as efficient as it can be: internal static class MainLogger { internal static void LogStringToFile(string logText) { DateTime timestamp = DateTime.Now; string str = timestamp.ToString("dd-MM-yy HH:mm:ss ", CultureInfo.InvariantCulture) + "\t" + logText + "\n"; const string filename = Constants.LOG_FILENAME; FileInfo fileInfo = new FileInfo(filename); if (fileInfo.Exists) { if (fileInfo.Length > Constants.LOG_FILESIZE) { File.Create(filename).Dispose(); } } else { File.Create(filename).Dispose(); } int i = 0; while(true) { try { using (StreamWriter writer = File.AppendText(filename)) { writer.WriteLine(str); } break; } catch (IOException) { Thread.Sleep(10); i++; if (i >= 8) { throw new IOException("Log file \"" + Constants.LOG_FILENAME + "\" not accessible after 5 tries"); } } } } } enter code here

  • Query Parameter Value Is Null When Enum Item 0 is Cast with Int32

    - by Timothy
    When I use the first item in a zero-based Enum cast to Int32 as a query parameter, the parameter value is null. I've worked around it by simply setting the first item to a value of 1, but I was wondering though what's really going on here? This one has me scratching my head. Why is the parameter value regarded as null, instead of 0? Enum LogEventType : int { SignIn, SignInFailure, SignOut, ... } private static DataTable QueryEventLogSession(DateTime start, DateTime stop) { DataTable entries = new DataTable(); using (FbConnection conn = new FbConnection(DSN)) { using (FbDataAdapter adapter = new FbDataAdapter( "SELECT event_type, event_timestamp, event_details FROM event_log " + "WHERE event_timestamp BETWEEN @start AND @stop " + "AND event_type IN (@signIn, @signInFailure, @signOut) " + "ORDER BY event_timestamp ASC", conn)) { adapter.SelectCommand.Parameters.AddRange(new Object[] { new FbParameter("@start", start), new FbParameter("@stop", stop), new FbParameter("@signIn", (Int32)LogEventType.SignIn), new FbParameter("@signInFailure", (Int32)LogEventType.SignInFailure), new FbParameter("@signOut", (Int32)LogEventType.SignOut)}); Trace.WriteLine(adapter.SelectCommand.CommandText); foreach (FbParameter p in adapter.SelectCommand.Parameters) { Trace.WriteLine(p.Value.ToString()); } adapter.Fill(entries); } } return entries; }

  • Copy only files that are newer

    - by ErocM
    I am currently using this code: if (!Directory.Exists(command2)) Directory.CreateDirectory(command2); if (Directory.Exists(vmdaydir)) Directory.Delete(vmdaydir,true); if (!Directory.Exists(vmdaydir)) Directory.CreateDirectory(vmdaydir); var dir = Path.GetDirectoryName(args[0]); sb.AppendLine("Backing Up VM: " + DateTime.Now.ToString(CultureInfo.InvariantCulture)); Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileIO.FileSystem.CopyDirectory(dir, vmdaydir); sb.AppendLine("VM Backed Up: " + DateTime.Now.ToString(CultureInfo.InvariantCulture)); As you can see, I am deleting the directory, then I am copying the folder back. This is taking way to long since the directory is ~80gb in size. I realized that I do not need to copy all the files, only the ones that have changed. How would I copy the files from one folder to another but only copying the files that are newer? Anyone have any suggestions? ==== edit ==== I assume I can just do a file compare of each file and then copy it to the new directory, iterating through each folder/file? Is there a simpler way to do this?

  • Can't store UTF-8 in RDS despite setting up new Parameter Group using Rails on Heroku

    - by Lail
    I'm setting up a new instance of a Rails(2.3.5) app on Heroku using Amazon RDS as the database. I'd like to use UTF-8 for everything. Since RDS isn't UTF-8 by default, I set up a new Parameter Group and switched the database to use that one, basically per this. Seems to have worked: SHOW VARIABLES LIKE '%character%'; character_set_client utf8 character_set_connection utf8 character_set_database utf8 character_set_filesystem binary character_set_results utf8 character_set_server utf8 character_set_system utf8 character_sets_dir /rdsdbbin/mysql-5.1.50.R3/share/mysql/charsets/ Furthermore, I've successfully setup Heroku to use the RDS database. After rake db:migrate, everything looks good: CREATE TABLE `comments` ( `id` int(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `commentable_id` int(11) DEFAULT NULL, `parent_id` int(11) DEFAULT NULL, `content` text COLLATE utf8_unicode_ci, `child_count` int(11) DEFAULT '0', `created_at` datetime DEFAULT NULL, `updated_at` datetime DEFAULT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`), KEY `commentable_id` (`commentable_id`), KEY `index_comments_on_community_id` (`community_id`), KEY `parent_id` (`parent_id`) ) ENGINE=InnoDB AUTO_INCREMENT=4 DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8 COLLATE=utf8_unicode_ci; In the markup, I've included: <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> Also, I've set: production: encoding: utf8 collation: utf8_general_ci ...in the database.yml, though I'm not very confident that anything is being done to honor any of those settings in this case, as Heroku seems to be doing its own config when connecting to RDS. Now, I enter a comment through the form in the app: "Úbe® ƒåiL", but in the database I've got "Úbe® Æ’Ã¥iL" It looks fine when Rails loads it back out of the database and it is rendered to the page, so whatever it is doing one way, it's undoing the other way. If I look at the RDS database in Sequel Pro, it looks fine if I set the encoding to "UTF-8 Unicode via Latin 1". So it seems Latin-1 is sneaking in there somewhere. Somebody must have done this before, right? What am I missing?

  • Select rows from table1 and all the children from table2 into an object

    - by Patrick
    I want to pull data from table "Province_Notifiers" and also fetch all corresponding items from table "Province_Notifier_Datas". The table "Province_Notifier" has a guid to identify it (PK), table "Province_Notifier_Datas" has a column called BelongsToProvinceID witch is a foreign key to the "Province_Notifier" tables guid. I tried something like this: var records = from data in ctx.Province_Notifiers where DateTime.Now >= data.SendTime && data.Sent == false join data2 in ctx.Province_Notifier_Datas on data.Province_ID equals data2.BelongsToProvince_ID select new Province_Notifier { Email = data.Email, Province_ID = data.Province_ID, ProvinceName = data.ProvinceName, Sent = data.Sent, UserName = data.UserName, User_ID = data.User_ID, Province_Notifier_Datas = (new List<Province_Notifier_Data>().AddRange(data2)) }; This line is not working and i am trying to figure out how topull the data from table2 into that Province_Notifier_Datas variable. Province_Notifier_Datas = (new List<Province_Notifier_Data>().AddRange(data2)) I can add a record easily by adding the second table row into the Province_Notifier_Datas but i can't fetch it back. Province_Notifier dbNotifier = new Province_Notifier(); // set some values for dbNotifier dbNotifier.Province_Notifier_Datas.Add( new Province_Notifier_Data { BelongsToProvince_ID = userInput.Value.ProvinceId, EventText = GenerateNotificationDetail(notifierDetail) }); This works and inserts the data correctly into both tables. Edit: These error messages is thrown: Cannot convert from 'Province_Notifier_Data' to 'System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable' If i look in Visual Studio, the variable "Province_Notifier_Datas" is of type System.Data.Linq.EntitySet The best overloaded method match for 'System.Collections.Generic.List.AddRange(System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable)' has some invalid arguments Edit: var records = from data in ctx.Province_Notifiers where DateTime.Now >= data.SendTime && data.Sent == false join data2 in ctx.Province_Notifier_Datas on data.Province_ID equals data2.BelongsToProvince_ID into data2list select new Province_Notifier { Email = data.Email, Province_ID = data.Province_ID, ProvinceName = data.ProvinceName, Sent = data.Sent, UserName = data.UserName, User_ID = data.User_ID, Province_Notifier_Datas = new EntitySet<Province_Notifier_Data>().AddRange(data2List) }; Error 3 The name 'data2List' does not exist in the current context.

  • Serialization of Queue type not working

    - by Soham
    Consider this piece of code: private Queue Date=new Queue(); //other declarations public DateTime _Date { get { return (DateTime)Date.Peek();} set { Date.Enqueue(value); } } //other properties and stuff.... public void UpdatePosition(...) { //other code IFormatter formatter = new BinaryFormatter(); Stream Datestream = new MemoryStream(); formatter.Serialize(Datestream, Date); byte[] Datebin = new byte[2048]; Datestream.Read(Datebin,0,2048); //Debug-Bug Console.WriteLine(Convert.ToString(this._Date)); Console.WriteLine(BitConverter.ToString(Datebin, 0, 3)); //other code } The output of the first WriteLine is perfect. I.e to check if really the Queue is initialised or not. It is. The right variables are stored etc. (I inserted a value in that Queue, that part of the code is not shown.) But the second WriteLine is not giving the right expected answer: It serializes the entire Queue to 00-00-00.

  • Efficiently select top row for each category in the set

    - by VladV
    I need to select a top row for each category from a known set (somewhat similar to this question). The problem is, how to make this query efficient on the large number of rows. For example, let's create a table that stores temperature recording in several places. CREATE TABLE #t ( placeId int, ts datetime, temp int, PRIMARY KEY (ts, placeId) ) -- insert some sample data SET NOCOUNT ON DECLARE @n int, @ts datetime SELECT @n = 1000, @ts = '2000-01-01' WHILE (@n>0) BEGIN INSERT INTO #t VALUES (@n % 10, @ts, @n % 37) IF (@n % 10 = 0) SET @ts = DATEADD(hour, 1, @ts) SET @n = @n - 1 END Now I need to get the latest recording for each of the places 1, 2, 3. This way is efficient, but doesn't scale well (and looks dirty). SELECT * FROM ( SELECT TOP 1 placeId, temp FROM #t WHERE placeId = 1 ORDER BY ts DESC ) t1 UNION ALL SELECT * FROM ( SELECT TOP 1 placeId, temp FROM #t WHERE placeId = 2 ORDER BY ts DESC ) t2 UNION ALL SELECT * FROM ( SELECT TOP 1 placeId, temp FROM #t WHERE placeId = 3 ORDER BY ts DESC ) t3 The following looks better but works much less efficiently (30% vs 70% according to the optimizer). SELECT placeId, ts, temp FROM ( SELECT placeId, ts, temp, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY placeId ORDER BY ts DESC) rownum FROM #t WHERE placeId IN (1, 2, 3) ) t WHERE rownum = 1 The problem is, during the latter query execution plan a clustered index scan is performed on #t and 300 rows are retrieved, sorted, numbered, and then filtered, leaving only 3 rows. For the former query three times one row is fetched. Is there a way to perform the query efficiently without lots of unions?

  • SQL Group by Minute- Expanded

    - by Barnie
    I am working on something similar to this post here: TS SQL - group by minute However mine is pulling from an message queue, and I need to see an accurate count of the amount of traffic the Message Queue is creating/ sending, and at what time Select * From MessageQueue mq My expanded version of this though is the following: A) User defines a start time and an end time (Easy enough using Declare's @StartTime and @EndTime B) Give the user the option of choosing the "grouping". Will it be broken out by 1 minutes, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, or 30 minutes (Max). (I had thought to do this with a CASE statement, but my test problems fall apart on me.) C) Display the data to accurately show a count of what happened during the interval (Grouping) selected. This is where I am at so far SQL Blob: DECLARE @StartTime datetime DECLARE @EndTime datetime SELECT DATEPART(n, mq.cre_date)/5 as Time --Trying to just sort by 5 minute intervals ,CONVERT(VARCHAR(10),mq.Cre_Date,101) ,COUNT(*) as results FROM dbo.MessageQueue mq WHERE mq.cre_date BETWEEN @StartDate AND @EndDate GROUP BY DATEPART(n, mq.cre_date)/5 --Trying to just sort by 5 minute intervals , eq.Cre_Date This is the output I would like to achieve: [Time] [Date] [Message Count] 1300 06/26/2012 5 1305 06/26/2012 1 1310 06/26/2012 100

I have long list of columns in SELECT and around 12+ columns in Sub Query. In my From clause there are around 8 tables. To fetch 2000 records full query take 21 seconds and if I remove Subquiries it just take 4 seconds. I have tried to optimize query using 'Database Engine Tuning Advisor' and on adding new advised indexes and statistics but these changes make query time even bad. Note: As I have mentioned that this is test data to explain my question the real data has lot of tables joins columns but without Sub-Query the results us fine. Any help thanks.

  • MySQL left outer join is slow

    - by Ryan Doherty
    Hi, hoping to get some help with this query, I've worked at it for a while now and can't get it any faster: SELECT date, count(id) as 'visits' FROM dates LEFT OUTER JOIN visits ON (dates.date = DATE(visits.start) and account_id = 40 ) WHERE date >= '2010-12-13' AND date <= '2011-1-13' GROUP BY date ORDER BY date ASC That query takes about 8 seconds to run. I've added indexes on dates.date, visits.start, visits.account_id and visits.start+visits.account_id and can't get it to run any faster. Table structure (only showing relevant columns in visit table): create table visits ( `id` int(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `account_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `start` DATETIME NOT NULL, `end` DATETIME NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`) ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8; CREATE TABLE `dates` ( `date` date NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`date`) ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1; dates table contains all days from 2010-1-1 to 2020-1-1 (~3k rows). visits table contains about 400k rows dating from 2010-6-1 to yesterday. I'm using the date table so the join will return 0 visits for days there were no visits. Results I want for reference: +------------+--------+ | date | visits | +------------+--------+ | 2010-12-13 | 301 | | 2010-12-14 | 356 | | 2010-12-15 | 423 | | 2010-12-16 | 332 | | 2010-12-17 | 346 | | 2010-12-18 | 226 | | 2010-12-19 | 213 | | 2010-12-20 | 311 | | 2010-12-21 | 273 | | 2010-12-22 | 286 | | 2010-12-23 | 241 | | 2010-12-24 | 149 | | 2010-12-25 | 102 | | 2010-12-26 | 174 | | 2010-12-27 | 258 | | 2010-12-28 | 348 | | 2010-12-29 | 392 | | 2010-12-30 | 395 | | 2010-12-31 | 278 | | 2011-01-01 | 241 | | 2011-01-02 | 295 | | 2011-01-03 | 369 | | 2011-01-04 | 438 | | 2011-01-05 | 393 | | 2011-01-06 | 368 | | 2011-01-07 | 435 | | 2011-01-08 | 313 | | 2011-01-09 | 250 | | 2011-01-10 | 345 | | 2011-01-11 | 387 | | 2011-01-12 | 0 | | 2011-01-13 | 0 | +------------+--------+ Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Why do we need Audit Columns in Database Tables?

    - by Software Enthusiastic
    Hi I have seen many database designs having following audit columns on all the tables... Created By Create DateTime Updated By Upldated DateTime From one perspective I see tables from the following view... Entity Tables: Good candidate for Audit columns) Reference Tables: Audit columns may or may not required. In some case last update information is not at all required because record is never going to be modified.) Reference Data Tables Like Country Names, Entity State etc... Audit columns may not required because these information is created only during system installation time, and never going to be changed. I have seen many designers blindly put all audit columns to all tables, is this practice good, if yes what could be the reason... I just want to know because to me it seems illogical. It is difficult for me to figure out why do they design their db this way? I am not saying they are wrong or right, just want to know the WHY? You can also suggest me, if there is an alternative auditing patter or solution available... Thanks and Regards

  • UpdateModelFromDatabaseException when trying to add a table to Entity Framework model

    - by Agent_9191
    I'm running into a weird issue with Entity Framework in .NET 3.5 SP1 within Visual Studio 2008. I created a database with a few tables in SQL Server and then created the associated .edmx Entity Framework model and had no issues. I then created a new table in the database that has a foreign key to an existing table and needed to be added to the .edmx. So I opened the .edmx in Visual Studio and in the models right-clicked and chose "Update Model From Database...". I saw the new table in the "add" tab, so I checked it and clicked finish. However I get an error message with the following text: --------------------------- Microsoft Visual Studio --------------------------- An exception of type 'Microsoft.Data.Entity.Design.Model.Commands.UpdateModelFromDatabaseException' occurred while attempting to update from the database. The exception message is: 'Cannot update from the database. Cannot resolve the Name Target for ScalarProperty 'ID <==> CustomerID'.'. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- For reference, here's the tables seem to be the most pertinent to the error. CustomerPreferences already exists in the .edmx. Diets is the table that was added afterwards and trying to add to the .edmx. CREATE TABLE [dbo].[CustomerPreferences]( [ID] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL, [LastUpdatedTime] [datetime] NOT NULL, [LastUpdatedBy] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ( [ID] ASC )WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY] ) ON [PRIMARY] CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Diets]( [ID] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL, [CustomerID] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL, [Description] [nvarchar](50) NOT NULL, [LastUpdatedTime] [datetime] NOT NULL, [LastUpdatedBy] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ( [ID] ASC )WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY] ) ON [PRIMARY] GO ALTER TABLE [dbo].[Diets] WITH CHECK ADD CONSTRAINT [FK_Diets_CustomerPreferences] FOREIGN KEY([CustomerID]) REFERENCES [dbo].[CustomerPreferences] ([ID]) GO ALTER TABLE [dbo].[Diets] CHECK CONSTRAINT [FK_Diets_CustomerPreferences] GO This seems like a fairly common use case, so I'm not sure where I'm going wrong.

  • Query Parameter Value Is Null When Enum Item 0 is Cast to Int32

    - by Timothy
    When I use the first item in a zero-based Enum cast to Int32 as a query parameter, the parameter value is null. I've worked around it by simply setting the first item to a value of 1, but I was wondering though what's really going on here? This one has me scratching my head. Why does the parameter regarded the value as null, instead of 0? Enum LogEventType : int { SignIn, SignInFailure, SignOut, ... } private static DataTable QueryEventLogSession(DateTime start, DateTime stop) { DataTable entries = new DataTable(); using (FbConnection conn = new FbConnection(DSN)) { using (FbDataAdapter adapter = new FbDataAdapter( "SELECT event_type, event_timestamp, event_details FROM event_log " + "WHERE event_timestamp BETWEEN @start AND @stop " + "AND event_type IN (@signIn, @signInFailure, @signOut) " + "ORDER BY event_timestamp ASC", conn)) { adapter.SelectCommand.Parameters.AddRange(new Object[] { new FbParameter("@start", start), new FbParameter("@stop", stop), new FbParameter("@signIn", (Int32)LogEventType.SignIn), new FbParameter("@signInFailure", (Int32)LogEventType.SignInFailure), new FbParameter("@signOut", (Int32)LogEventType.SignOut)}); Trace.WriteLine(adapter.SelectCommand.CommandText); foreach (FbParameter p in adapter.SelectCommand.Parameters) { Trace.WriteLine(p.Value.ToString()); } adapter.Fill(entries); } } return entries; }

  • MySQL Datefields: duplicate or calculate?

    - by Konerak
    We are using a table with a structure imposed upon us more than 10 years ago. We are allowed to add columns, but urged not to change existing columns. Certain columns are meant to represent dates, but are put in different format. Amongst others: * CHAR(6): YYMMDD * CHAR(6): DDMMYY * CHAR(8): YYYYMMDD * CHAR(8): DDMMYYYY * DATE * DATETIME Since we now would like to do some more complex queries, using advanced date functions, my manager proposed to d*uplicate those problem columns* to a proper FORMATTED_OLDCOLUMNNAME column using a DATE or DATETIME format. Is this the way to go? Couldn't we just use the STR_TO_DATE function each time we accessed the columns? To avoid every query having to copy-paste the function, I could still work with a view or a stored procedure, but duplicating data to avoid recalculation sounds wrong. Solutions I see (I guess I prefer 2.2.1) 1. Physically duplicate columns 1.1 In the same table 1.1.1 Added by each script that does a modification (INSERT/UPDATE/REPLACE/...) 1.1.2 Maintained by a trigger on each modification 1.2 In a separate table 1.2.1 Added by each script that does a modification (INSERT/UPDATE/REPLACE/...) 1.2.2 Maintained by a trigger on each modification 2. On-demand transformation 2.1 Each query has to perform the transformation 2.1.1 Using copy-paste in the source code 2.1.2 Using a library 2.1.3 Using a STORED PROCEDURE 2.2 A view performs the transformation 2.2.1 A separate table replacing the entire table 2.2.2 A separate table just adding the date-fields for the primary keys Am I right to say it's better to recalculate than to store? And would a view be a good solution?
