  • University Assignment: Datacenter/Networking Infrastructure for Hosting Company [closed]

    - by TCB13
My university assigned me to theorizing a data center for an Web Hosting company. The company should provide the following services: Shared WebHosting; Dedicated Servers; VPS (Virtual Private Server); The bandwith (as resquested) is limited to 10 Gbps. Is there any good book / other info I can read (max 100 pages) about how to design a good data center for hosting, what are the best practices and what should be done from a (logical) network perspective, what security policies should be implemented and how the data center should be built (physically)? Thank you ;)

  • Virtual Machine Network Services causes networking problems in Vista Enterprise 64 bit install

    - by Bill
I have a Quad-core/8GB Vista Enterprise 64-bit (SP2) installation on which I installed Virtual PC 2007. I have a problem that is opposite of all that I found searching around the Internet--everybody has problems making network connections from their guest VM. When Virtual Machine Network Services is enabled in the protocol stack for my network card across a reboot, it causes access problems to the network. The amount of time to login in using a domain credentialed account is upwards of 3 minutes, then after reaching the desktop the network and sharing center shows that my connection to the domain is unauthenticated. Disabling and re-enabling the Virtual Machine Network Services (uncheck in network properties/apply/recheck/apply) fixes the problem. And as long as I have the VMNS disabled when I shutdown the restart runs smoothly. I just have to remember to enable after login and disable before shutdown. I have un-installed and re-installed Virtual PC 2007 multiple times with restarts between. The install consists of the SP1 + a KB patch for guest resolution fix. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Some additional information... At one point during my hairpulling and teethgnashing with this, I tried to ping my primary DC and observed some weird responses: (Our DC is 10.10.10.25, my dynamic IP was 10.10.10.203) Reply from 10.10.10.203, Destination host unreachable. Request timed out. Reply from 10.10.10.25: ... This is not consistently repeatable, but thought it might strike a chord with someone.

  • Ubuntu "No space left on device" for /home, df shows 100% full, ds shows much, much less

    - by Jon Cram
    On an Ubuntu 12.04 server, normal users can no longer create or add to files in /home, encountering a "No space left on device" error. The /home directory has a capacity of 1.7 terabytes and as far as I can tell is nowhere near full in terms of actual data stored or inodes used. df -h shows: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/md2 1.0T 18G 955G 2% / udev 7.7G 4.0K 7.7G 1% /dev tmpfs 3.1G 320K 3.1G 1% /run none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock none 7.7G 0 7.7G 0% /run/shm cgroup 7.7G 0 7.7G 0% /sys/fs/cgroup /dev/md3 1.7T 1.7T 0 100% /home /dev/md1 496M 45M 426M 10% /boot /home indeed looks rather full. du -hs /home suggests otherwise: 1.4G /home There appears no inode issue - df -i: Filesystem Inodes IUsed IFree IUse% Mounted on /dev/md2 67108864 75334 67033530 1% / udev 2013497 527 2012970 1% /dev tmpfs 2015816 440 2015376 1% /run none 2015816 2 2015814 1% /run/lock none 2015816 1 2015815 1% /run/shm cgroup 2015816 9 2015807 1% /sys/fs/cgroup /dev/md3 113909760 105981 113803779 1% /home /dev/md1 131072 239 130833 1% /boot I recently deleted a many gigabytes of application cache and log data from /home, however this was in the tens of gigabytes at best and nowhere near the capcity of /home. • vmware workstation - virtual network adapters missing from ipconfig, still show in networking (XP host)

    - by Adam
Hi Folks - here's a new one for me, and my first time posting here: I installed VMWare workstation 7.1 on a new PC. VMWare properly installs the virtual network adapters under the Network Connections control panel, however for some reason they do not show up under ipconfig, which is very weird. They also don't appear anywhere in "route print". I don't have network connectivity to the VM. My guesses are perhaps some conflict with Symantec AntiVirus or Symantec Client Firewall. Tried the following things: enabling TCP/IP in the virtual network adapters (they often get installed with it disabled for some reason) Restoring defualts in the VMnetcfg gui tool (this causes an uninstall and reinstall of the virtual network adapters on the host) Re-installing vmware workstation Uninstalling checkpoint secureremote and then reinstalling vmware Just to be clear, this problem is totally on the host. In my searching for stuff about (non-vmware) adapters missing from ipconfig, I see some posts about resetting the TCP/IP stack using netsh. Looking into that next... Thanks!

  • Is there a way to automate testing for a GNS3 network topology?

    - by Chedy2149
I'm working on an MPLS backbone topology using GNS3, this topology includes configuration of several networking technologies such as IPv6, BGP, OSPF, IPv6 to IPv4 dynamic tunneling, MPLS based VPNs, MPLS based traffic engineering... So I'm a beginner with basic knowledge in networking (Ipv4 addressing, basic routing and switching) and I can't just easly test if my topology works or not, moreover fiddling with configuration I've noticed that sometimes when getting MPLS config right and missing BGP config all my topology is messed up. Given that I use Cisco 7200 series routers, is there any way to build a test harness for my topology in order to guarentee correctness with a single push button automated process?

  • LXC Container Networking

    - by digitaladdictions
I just started to experiment with LXC containers. I was able to create a container and start it up but I cannot get dhcp to assign the container an IP address. If I assign a static address the container can ping the host IP but not outside the host IP. The host is CentOS 6.5 and the guest is Ubuntu 14.04LTS. I used the template downloaded by lxc-create -t download -n cn-01 command. If I am trying to get an IP address on the same subnet as the host I don't believe I should need the IP tables rule for masquerading but I added it anyways. Same with IP forwarding. I compiled LXC by hand from the following source https://linuxcontainers.org/downloads/lxc-1.0.4.tar.gz Host Operating System Version #> cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 6.5 (Final) #> uname -a Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.32-431.20.3.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Jun 19 21:14:45 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Container Config #> cat /usr/local/var/lib/lxc/cn-01/config # Template used to create this container: /usr/local/share/lxc/templates/lxc-download # Parameters passed to the template: # For additional config options, please look at lxc.container.conf(5) # Distribution configuration lxc.include = /usr/local/share/lxc/config/ubuntu.common.conf lxc.arch = x86_64 # Container specific configuration lxc.rootfs = /usr/local/var/lib/lxc/cn-01/rootfs lxc.utsname = cn-01 # Network configuration lxc.network.type = veth lxc.network.flags = up lxc.network.link = br0 LXC default.confu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP qlen 1000 link/ether 00:0c:29:12:30:f2 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:f #> cat /usr/local/etc/lxc/default.conf lxc.network.type = veth lxc.network.link = br0 lxc.network.flags = up #> lxc-checkconfig Kernel configuration not found at /proc/config.gz; searching... • Networking is broken in my VMware 10.0 VMs after upgrading to Windows 8.1

    - by Michael Geary
I have a VMware Workstation 10.0 installation with several virtual networks including the default host-only and NAT networks. After upgrading to Windows 8.1, the NAT network was not working. I booted an Ubuntu VM with the default network setup that was previously working, and it sat for a long time during startup saying it was waiting for the network. After it finally started up, an ifconfig showed no IP address for eth0. How can I fix the broken network?

  • Problems bringing up a second virtual network interface

Below is my /etc/networking/interfaces # The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback #eth0 is our main IP address auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 198.58.103.* netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 198.58.103.1 #eth0:0 is our private address auto eth0:0 iface eth0:0 inet static address 192.168.129.134 netmask 255.255.128.0 #eth0:1 is for www.site.com auto eth0:1 iface eth0:1 inet static address 198.58.104.* netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 198.58.104.1 When I run /etc/init.d/networking restart, I get a fail error about bringing up eth0:1: RTNETLINK answers: File exists Failed to bring up eth0:1. Any reason this would be? I didn't have any problems with I first set up eth0 and eth0:0.

  • Why just splitting an Ethernet cable does not work?

    - by Sin Jeong-hun
I thought the Ethernet is logically one-line communication bus (for argument's sake, I am excluding hubs). All machines attached in the bus hears the same signals and the machines themselves try to avoid collisions by randomly backing off. http://computer.howstuffworks.com/ethernet6.htm If so, why splitting one Ethernet line from my home router into two and connecting two computers would not work? Why do I have to add a switch to it? *What the Internet said would not work. [4 port home router] ------[one Ethernet cable]-----[simple splitter]======[two computers] *What the Internet said I should do [4 port home router] ------[one Ethernet cable]-----[switch]======[two computers] Is this because of the signal degradation (reduced electric current)? Thank you for all the answers! The reason why I did not just use the two ports of my home router is... The 4-port gigabit router is in my room and I had put a computer in another room (also my room, though). Since wired network is far more reliable and secure, I had bought a long Ethernet cable and and connected the computer to the router. Now I was thinking about adding another computer to that room. I could buy another long Ethernet cable, but then there will be two cables between the rooms. The one line already is a minor annoyance, so I thought if I could share the one line between the two computers in that room. A switch would work, but it requires power and is a little bit pricey. That is why I wondered why it would not work to simply split the physical Ethernet cable. Apparently I do not completely understand how Ethernet and a switch work. I just have some bit of knowledge I heard in my college class.

  • (Windows 7) Dial Up Connection Locks up the Networking Service

    - by Nick
I connect to the internet by using my cell phone as a dial up modem. (shh, don't tell my service provider) The connection is usually seamless and the speed is good (150kbps) but occasionally, the connection will get terminated by either the phone or the network, I'm not sure which and then Windows7 stubbornly doesn't acknowledge that the connection is dead so I can re-dial. I have tried to manually kill the connection, but then anything related to the network service refuses to open and the connection is still there. No "Network and Sharing Center", "Network Devices" and often the tray menu will refuse to pop open. The only way I have found to clear the problem is a full restart which. Logging off doesn't work and I haven't been able to find the service that is frozen. If anyone knows how to fix this or prevent this from happening or even how to go about troubleshooting I would be very grateful. ps. This problem is non-existant when tethering in linux on the same machine. (Ubunutu 9 and JoliOS)

  • Citrix Xen VM's lose networking

    - by Ash
    My client has a XenServer 6.0.2 installation with 2 Window Server 2008 R2 virtual machines. Whenever the virtual machines are rebooted they lose their IP settings (IP address, subnet, gateway). Each time after a reboot I need to login to each VM via XenCenter and re-apply the required static IP settings. This causes issues with connected iSCSI drives within each VM - drives need to be reconnected after each reboot. For example, a network adapter has the following settings pre-reboot: Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Citrix PV Ethernet Adapter #0 Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : C6-FB-A2-4F-2C-F3 IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 10.101.0.101(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.101.0.10 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.101.0.100 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled Post-reboot: Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Citrix PV Ethernet Adapter #0 Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : C6-FB-A2-4F-2C-F3 Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.153.174(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.101.0.100 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled Under XenCenter -- Virtual Network Interfaces, each adapter is set to a static MAC address (i.e. "Use this MAC address"). I have tried the following commands within one VM but this had no effect: netsh winsock reset catalog netsh int ip reset Can someone please help?

  • Ubuntu 11.04 Static IP doesn't take

    - by mrduclaw
I'm trying to set a static IP address in Ubuntu 11.04. I did a server install. I edited my /etc/network/interfaces file to include: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 10.0.0.100 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 10.0.0.1 When I do a /etc/init.d/networking restart this appears to take. After awhile though, that 10.0.0.100 will turn into something dished out by the DHCP server. My problem appears to be similar to this: Ubuntu intrepid - static IP networking keeps restarting with DHCP But I don't have Gnome installed. Is there anything else that's running in the background that could be doing this? And if so, how do I disable it?

  • Route a specific user's traffic via VPN but still allow local networking

    - by wbg
So, I want to route certain traffic via a VPN connection and the rest via my normal Internet connection. I want to run several different programs and most of them don't support binding to a specific network interface (tun0 in my case). I've managed to send a specific user's traffic via the VPN following the answers given here: iptables - Target to route packet to specific interface? But unfortunately, when I run a server that connects to the Internet and has a web interface running on a local IP (127.0.0.1/192.168.0.*), all the Internet traffic correctly goes via tun0, but I'm unable to connect to the web interface from a local IP as a different user. When I log in as the VPN-ified user, I can access services running on local IPs, but other users/machines can't access any servers I start. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

  • Isn't ethernet used for LAN?

    - by Alraxite
I'm not really knowledgeable about networking stuff, hence the stupid question. I read that ethernet was used for LAN connections but I'm pretty sure what I'm currently using to connect to the internet is 'ethernet'. The only knowledge that I have about networking is that there are two types of internet connections: Dial-up and broadband. And broadband can be either DSL or cable. So where does ethernet come from? The only thing I can tell is that I have a DSL model and there is an ethernet port at the back of it, a cable from which runs to a port in the back of my CPU. So, can ethernet be used to connect to the internet? Is it a subtype of DSL? I'm really confused about this, so I would really appreciate if someone could explain this to me. Also, I will apologize if this isn't the right place to ask.

  • Can a Cisco 3550 be used as router?

    - by kubiej21
I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask such a question, but I'll give it a shot anyway. If it isn't, let me know, and I'll remove this post. Anyway, very recently I picked up a Cisco 3550 just to play around with networking and to familiarize myself with Cisco's command line configuration due to the fact that I will be working an electrical engineering internship in which I will have to deal with various networking issues (yes, I agree that a CSNA would be much better suited for this task, but since its part of the job requirements, I'm willing to learn about it). What I was wondering, is whether or not my 3550 can act as a router. I know its a L3 switch, but does that mean it can take the place of a router?

  • I can't get an IP address from a VirtualBox VM on OSX from some routers (ie Internet cafes)

    - by ezrock
On OSX 10.7.3, VirtualBox, using bridged adapter. Everything on the networking side works perfectly as expected in some networking environments, like my home router and some cafes. In others, I can't get an IP address over DHCP, and I don't know why. I suspect there is some setting on the router that is preventing me, or I have some issue with my MAC adress. When it's not working, in syslog, I'll see a few DHCPDISCOVER messages as my VM tries to find a DHCP server, and after a while, "No DHCPOFFERS received" And when I go to a "good" router, a simple "service network restart" is all I need to get an IP. Any ideas?

  • Hack Your Lights for Remote Control

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
This clever hack combines a modified wall switch with unused buttons on a universal remote to create one-touch wireless control of the lighting in a media room. Andrew, the tinker behind this home theater hack, writes: I really liked the idea of controlling my “Home Theater” lights with a remote (TV or other), this would save me the exhausting task of heaving myself off the couch to turn the lights on or off. I found one of my remotes has a spare power button, its one of those stupid “universal” remotes that comes with DVD players or TVs but only work if you have all the same brand equipment, I don’t so this made a good option for a light switch. • How can I detect and delete all lost configuration folders?

    - by Takkat
Over the time there is an increasing number of hidden .configuration folders in my home folder. Many of these come from applications I only installed for testing or from applications that I don't use any more. I would not mind really but these folders do clutter my home, and worse than that sum up to as much as 80 GBytes by now. As there are also applications I never heard of (at least I can't remember I had installed them) I hesitate to delete them. Is there a way to find out which folders came from purged applications? May there even be a way to auto-remove a configuration folder when purging (not removing) the application that created it?

So my question is - was the problem just something in my old Home folder? - also - can most issues that occur like this be solved by making a new account and backing up the "Home" folder?

  • /dev/sda2 contains a filesystem with error after partitioning

    - by Private
I just wanted to create a separate home partition on my Ubuntu 12.10 system. I booted the liveDVD, resized the sda2 partition (28gb of data resized to 30gb based on MiB [originally on a 100gb partition]) and made a new ext4 partition for the home folder. The drive is an SSD drive. I had changed the settings (noatime etc.) for SSD succesfully a week ago. On reboot I get the following error: /dev/sda2 contains a filesystem with errors Inode 74669 has an invalid extent node (blk 6881289) fsd / [953] terminated with status 4 What would you suggest me to do? If I can avoid a clean install that would save me a lot of time (I had just done all the config). I was following this HOWTO, but I did not get to changing any of the files or configs other than those with gparted. I have a (two-week old) SSD Samsung drive which is functioning just fine (other specs see bottom of this question). Other specs: 64bit 12.10, i7, 8gb ram, nvidia.
