• JRuby 1.7.0 will not install bundler given plenty of memory

  I installed jruby with rvm install jruby-1.7.0 and it ran out of memory when it tried to create the gemsets so I started by trying to install bundler with the new version and this is what I get ~>gem install bundler Error: Your application used more stack memory than the safety cap of 2048K. Specify -J-Xss####k to increase it (#### = cap size in KB). Specify -w for full StackOverflowError stack trace So I moved up the memory and I still got nothing with a huge chunk of memory ~>JRUBY_OPTS=-J-Xss1024m gem install bundler Error: Your application used more stack memory than the safety cap of 1024M. It's not a huge deal, but for some reason Ill be fixated on it because I'm anal like that.

• Folders-like URL with PHP?

  Hi, ever since I added this htaccess to my website, I noticed a HUGE slowdown, and my error logs are filled with errors such as PHP Warning: mysql_fetch_assoc(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in page.php on line 79. I've got up to four of these per second. Most of the time it works though. The htaccess consisted of two similar rules: one with two GET vars, another one with only one. RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^(.*)\/(.*)$ index.php?var1=$1&var2=$2 [L] Anyway, I just rewrote a PHP script that handles of all the strings and redirects where it should, and my website is now fast again. But is there a way to hide mypage.php?var1=la&var2=lu and still have URLs that look like folders? Thanks for your replies!

• How to deal with 'bad' decision forced on you regarding basic software for your product

  Here is my situation, our product used to support several of the major databases. Now management has decided to move all products to MaxDB (aka SapDB previously), and even if we keep supporting some of the previous dbs, all new installations are on MaxDB. I am sure MaxDB is a great db and can support huge SAP installations. But from the point of view of a software developper, its a nightmare. Every time you need to do something not trivial (write an stored procedure, some fancy trigger...) and you google for some info, you get like 0.1% of the hits you would with things like MySql, PostgreSql or MSSql. Mailing lists are nearly non existant. SAP does support it commercially but it is not clear wether we'll buy support. And the decision cannot be rolled back. The product works with MaxDB, but with lots of inefficiency on development and a lot of frustration, is there something one could do?

  I have a list representing products which are more or less the same. For instance, in the list below, they are all Seagate hard drives. Seagate Hard Drive 500Go Seagate Hard Drive 120Go for laptop Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500418AS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive New and shinny 500Go hard drive from Seagate Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 Seagate FreeAgent Desk 500GB External Hard Drive Silver 7200RPM USB2.0 Retail For a human being, the hard drives 3 and 5 are the same. We could go a little bit further and suppose that the products 1, 3, 4 and 5 are the same and put in other categories the product 2 and 6. We have a huge list of products that I would like to classify. Does anybody have an idea of what would be the best algorithm to do such thing. Any suggestions? I though of a Bayesian classifier but I am not sure if it is the best choice. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

• Subversion post-commit hook to sync rep with FTP server ( for a website )

  I've installed a repository on my computer locally. What I'm trying to do is be able to work on a website locally on my computer and see changes using something like MAMP. When I commit a change though I'd like it to sync my repo with the live website source files on a remote FTP server. I've done a bit of digging and I know that people keep saying to use a post-commit hook but I'm not sure how to configure it or even how to install it locally. Also i'm not sure if it's possible to do from my computer to an FTP. Could someone be a huge help and walk me through how to do this I've been trying for hours to figure out how to do it. thanks so much.

• Computer sending data while turned of

  I have a some what strange problem (which could have and easy and obvious solution for all I know). My problem is that when I've booted ubuntu (now 10.4 but same problem with 9.10) and turns it off it starts sending a HUGE amount of data via the ethernet cable, so much in fact that my router can't handle it and stops responding. As far as I can tell the computer is completely turned off with no fans spinning. I can add that if I boot windows I do not have this problem, just when exiting ubuntu. There are two "fixes" for my problem: Pull the ethernet cable until the next boot Turn off power to the PSU and wait for the capacitors to unload Is there anyone who knows what could be going on? I'd be happy to post some logs or conf-files. Currently I'm using the ethernet port on my motherboard which is a Asus P6T Deluxe V2 with an updated version of the BIOS (maybe not the latest but since it only happens when I've been in ubuntu I don't wanna mess with the BIOS too much). • Single Large v/s Multiple Small MySQL tables for storing Options

  Hi there, I'm aware of several question on this forum relating to this. But I'm not talking about splitting tables for the same entity (like user for example) Suppose I have a huge options table that stores list options like Gender, Marital Status, and many more domain specific groups with same structure. I plan to capture in a OPTIONS table. Another simple option is to have the field set as ENUM, but there are disadvantages of that as well. http://www.brandonsavage.net/why-you-should-replace-enum-with-something-else/ OPTIONS Table: option_id <will be referred instead of the name> name value group Query: select .. from options where group = '15' - Since this table is expected to be multi-tenant, the no of rows could grow drastically. - I believe splitting the tables instead of finding by the group would be easier to write & faster to execute. - or perhaps partitioning by the group or tenant? • WeakReferences are not freed in embedded OS

  I've got a strange behavior here: I get a massive memory leak in production running a WPF application that runs on a DLOG-Terminal (Windows Embedded Standard SP1) that behaves perfectly fine if I run it localy on a normal desktop (Win7 prof.) After many unsucessful attempts to find any problem I put one of those directly beside my monitor, installed the ANTs MemoryProfiler and did one hour test run simulating user operations on both the terminal and my development PC. Result is, that due to some strange reasons the embedded system piles up a huge amount of WeakReference and EffectiveValueEntry[] Objects. Here are are some pictures: Development (PC): And the terminal: Just look at the class list... Has anyone seen something like this before and are there known solutions to this? Where can I get help? (PS the terminals where installed with images prepared for .net4)

I was wondering if you could apply this to websites where payment is a huge issue. • Nested query to find details in table B for maximum value in table A

  I've got a huge bunch of flights travelling between airports. Each airport has an ID and (x,y) coordinates. For a given list of flights, I want to find the northernmost (highest x) airport visited. Here's the query I'm currently using: SELECT name,iata,icao,apid,x,y FROM airports WHERE y=(SELECT MAX(y) FROM airports AS a , flights AS f WHERE (f.src_apid=a.apid OR f.dst_apid=a.apid) ) This works beautifully and reasonably fast as long as y is unique, but fails once it isn't. What I'd want to do instead is find the MAX(y) in the subquery, but return the unique apid for the airport with the highest y. Any suggestions?

• How to verify a digital signature with openssl

  I'm using a thirdparty credit card processing service (Paybox) that, after a successful transaction, redirects back to the website with a signature in the URL as a security measure to prevent people from manipulating data. It's supposed to prove that the request originated from this service. So my success URL looks something like this: /success.php?signature=[HUGE HASH] I have no idea where to start with verifying this signature. This service does provide a public key, and I assume I need to create a private key, but I don't know much beyond that. I'm pretty good with linux, and I know I'll have to run some openssl commands. I'm writing the verification script in PHP, which also has native openssl() functions. If anyone could please push me in the right direction with some pseudo code, or even functional code, I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

• Visual Studio 2010 ClickOnce prerequisites from same location

  I'm using clickonce publishing and want to require .net 3.5 framework and others as prerequisites. I have selected the option to download the prerequisites from same folder as my app. I've also placed the .net 3.5 redistributable exe in the folder on the server where the app will be published. I publish by FTP over the internet to the server where the users are. However, VS will not let me publish saying it can't find the prerequisites on disk. Does this mean I have to have the prerequisites installed somewhere on my developer machine and that those files will all be uploaded by FTP to the server everytime I publish a new version to the server? That would be a huge amount of data to upload over my slow DSL upload link. Any insight?

  Whilst asking this question asp.net scheduling timed events user murph posted some insightful information: Point about this is that its very, very simple - you have an process for exchange that is performing a clearly defined task and you have a high frequency task that is not doing anything particularly complex, its a straightforward query (select from table where sent = false and send at < value) - probably into temporary table so that you can run a single query update after you've done the sends - that you can optimise the index for. You're not trying to queue up a huge pile of event triggers, just one that fires once a minute and processes things that are due. Is it possible to SELECT data from table X INTO table Y and have the UPDATES that are performed on table Y pushed into table X? I guess the alternative would be that the data gets updated in table Y then an update command can be run on table X based on the data in table Y. What would be the advantage of selecting into another table? Thank you,

• Can I embed video on external sites while still using tokens to protect the content?

  On our own website, it's easy to protect against direct links to our video content by grabbing a token through AJAX and verifying the token through PHP before the file download is started. However I'm also researching how I could provide an embed feature, like YouTube or vimeo etc., without compromising this security feature. The problem is that the embed code I want to provide should look something like <object>...<embed>...</embed></object> -- but I don't know how to grab and append the token to the filename. I mean, I guess I could attach a script that did some gnarly JNOP business, but that's too dirty. I'm using JW Player for the actual video container. Huge thanks to anyone who can help...

• Ajax security problem

  I want to create a browser based game and I have a huge problem, the game can be easily hacked. The problem is at a page where you can go to "work", I store in a file the work ending date and the amount of money what you will receive after finishing the work. There are 4 type of works. The problem is that I use ajax to send to a php file the necessary information. The URL looks like this x.php?date=....&pay=.... The javascript part of the page calculates the date and the pay but if you simply enter in your URL bar x.php?date=anynumber&pay=99999 you will receive that 99999 dollars. What should I do ? And sorry for my bad english :)

• How well does Solr scale over large number of facet values?

  I'm using Solr and I want to facet over a field "group". Since "group" is created by users, potentially there can be a huge number of values for "group". Would Solr be able to handle a use case like this? Or is Solr not really appropriate for facet fields with a large number of values? I understand that I can set facet.limit to restrict the number of values returned for a facet field. Would this help in my case? Say there are 100,000 matching values for "group" in a search, if I set facet.limit to 50. would that speed up the query, or would the query still be slow because Solr still needs to process and sort through all the facet values and return the top 50 ones? Any tips on how to tune Solr for large number of facet values? Thanks.

• What do you do before starting on a project?

  I'm still a pretty new project, and I haven't really worked on any large projects yet. However a few projects for school has shown me something I have never really thought of before. Pre-Project planning. One project we ran into a huge problem at the very last minute, and the other project was not divided up between partners very evenly, such that all the work was actually done at the end. So my question to everyone here is: How do you plan out the project beforehand? Please try to cover the following: Design (draw out UI by hand, UMLs, etc.) Division of Labor Timeline (especially how you estimate how much time is needed for certain things) and anything else you can think of.   I have google as much as I possible, checked stackoverflow several times, and yet I can not find a good html to pdf converter that can handle css. Is there a free and open source solution (even for commercial usage)? There are many solutions, with huge variety of price ranges, but I was looking for something open source and free. I have tried PISA for Python and it works fairly well, but is not free for commercial usage. Is there anything for .Net? I have not had success with iTextSharp.

• Working with multiple input and output files in Python

  I need to open multiple files (2 input and 2 output files), do complex manipulations on the lines from input files and then append results at the end of 2 output files. I am currently using the following approach: in_1 = open(input_1) in_2 = open(input_2) out_1 = open(output_1, "w") out_2 = open(output_2, "w") # Read one line from each 'in_' file # Do many operations on the DNA sequences included in the input files # Append one line to each 'out_' file in_1.close() in_2.close() out_1.close() out_2.close() The files are huge (each potentially approaching 1Go, that is why I am reading through these input files one at a time. I am guessing that this is not a very Pythonic way to do things. :) Would using the following form good? with open("file1") as f1: with open("file2") as f2: # etc. If yes, could I do it while avoiding the highly indented code that would result?
