• How can I be sure that the motherboard is dead and it's not another issue?

  So I have and old computer with and Intel D101GGC motherboard and a pentium 4 cpu and award bios, with a long repeating beep and not passing POST. I tried: RAM checking, they are good and working on other computers Replacing the PSU with a tested one, and still having the same issue I assumed that the CPU is dead and tested 2 others they are both Celeron D processors I also tested the CPU of this computer on another one and it's working fine I also tried it without RAM and still have the same long beep I did all this after disconnecting all the other hardware like HDD and DVD drives. The only time I didn't get any beeps is after removing the CPU I don't know if the processor is needed for the beeps to work. So My questions are: is it normal to not get any beeps if we don't have a CPU installed ? am I missing something or is the motherboard dead ? and thanks in advance.

• Does it mean video card is broken?

  Hello, I've just installed some sort of relatively old video card and now computer freezes while playing certain video games (Civilization 4, HOMM V). Some other video games with far better graphics works well (Dawn of War I). Note that "freezing" games runs nicely and smoothly for about 10-15 mins, no lag or any other indication that video card may be not good enough. And then PC suddenly freezes, nothing works but rebooting. The question is, is this a normal behavior of a video card which is simply "not good enough" for the games in question, or is there something broken? Card itself or motherboard or whatever? OS is Windows 7 if that matters, and I don't know exact videocard specs but that probably doesn't matter for this sort of question... thanks in advance!

• Second video card (PCI) under Windows 7

  I'm trying to get an old PCI video card (Diamond Stealth 2500) along with a normal PCI-E video card. In BIOS, there is a setting to switch between PEG/PCI or PCI/PEG on startup (PEG is PCI-E Graphics). When I use PCI/PEG only the old PCI card works, when I use the other one, only the new PEG card works. In PEG/PCI mode, Windows 7 recognizes the card and shows it in Device Manager as Standard VGA adapter, but it shows a warning for the device ("This device cannot start. (Code 10)").

• Makefile fails to install file correctly, installing HPL

  I started installing HPL a while ago, and had a related question. I've been following along with this guide from Intel. I figure this warrants a whole new one. When I try to make the archive, the output seems fine until the end, where it gives an error. make[2]: Entering directory `/hpl-2.0/src/auxil/intel64' Makefile:47: Make.inc: No such file or directory make[2]: *** No rule to make target `Make.inc'. Stop. make[2]: Leaving directory `/hpl-2.0/src/auxil/intel64' make[1]: *** [build_src] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/hpl-2.0' make: *** [build] Error 2 Going to the directory /hpl-2.0/src/auxil/intel64 shows a file, "Make.inc", but it's highlighted red, and the white text blinks. Is there a way to manually make that file? What do I need to do to get the makefile to do this for me?

Microsoft's Hyper-V Standalone would be very good solution, but it's impossible to access virtual machine from computer, where the Hyper-V is the host(isn't it?).   I have a machine to which I need to connect a second monitor. This machine currently hosts a ATI Radeon HD 4770 with two DVI adapters. The second monitor to be hooked to this machine is a VGA monitor. Until I find a DVI-VGA adpater, I'm thinking installing a second graphics card which does have a VGA adapter, an NVidia card. Can I successfully run both AMD and NVidia cards on this machine? Any specifics I must be aware of, like how to ensure the ATI card to be the main card? Operating system is Windows 7

• Should USB controller drivers be updated?

  Should USB controller drivers be updated? In Windows 7, many of the core system devices/buses/controllers still use stock Microsoft drivers dating back to 2006 -- things such as USB controllers and the PCI bus (and subsequent devices in the tree). Should these be getting updated? I would think that surely there would have been improvements/fixes/updates to some or any of these drivers by now, now over 7 years old. Does Windows know "best" in this case, updating these respective drivers when it's needed, or should the user be keeping an eye out for drivers in this "vein" of devices (meaning integrated/core/non-pluggable system devices that are built into the motherboard)?

  I am running Windows 7 in my Dell Studio 1555 Laptop. I have ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics card inside. When I try to watch a video, I can see only some disturbed texture. I can hear the audio and no prob with that. The I can see the video frames peeking sometimes but is pretty slower. I have DirectX (directx_feb2010_redist) and Win7 codecs installed.   I'm in the process of building a PC intended mostly for gaming and I've got a few questions. Currently, I only have the motherboard and CPU: Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z68AP-D3 CPU: Intel Core i3-2120 My main question is about memory compatibility. I have 4 Hynix 2GB HMT125U7BFR8C-G7 with light-moderate use laying around and I'd love to save a few bucks if I can. I've read that this is server memory... a) Will that be a problem for PC use? b) Is it compatible with the motherboard? I've emailed Hynix and checked Crucial to no avail. If incompatible, what memory would be a good fit given the components I have? The motherboard has 4 sockets and supports up to 32GB, but I don't know that I have the budget for that at the moment. • How can I get my Sapphire Radeon 7850 to output in "1080p"?

  I have a Radeon 7850 connected to a Vizio 3D compatible TV. The TV has a function to parse and display SBS encoded content. On my old graphics card (a Radeon 5770) I just had to select the 1080p option in the catalyst control center. In this mode my TV reported the output mode as "1080p", with the new card the TV reports "1920x1080". I cannot figure out what the difference in between the 2 signals but the "1920x1080" cannot be switched into 3D mode by the TV. Weirdly, before windows starts the (in the Bios and so forth) the computer outputs in "1080p" so I know the card is capable of it. As soon as the blue login screen comes up though it changes back to the "1920x1080". I've tried everthing I can think of. Updated my drivers from 13.3b3 to 13.4, then even tried the 13.5 beta (Which I'm still on this moment). Tried all the "optimized" HD settings in catalyst, even the 720p modes show the resolution from the TV and not the "720p" (which it used to do on the old card when I had to lower the resolution of games)

• Moving data to lower sectors on an SSD without defragging

  I bought an Intel SSD drive a while back and now I want to dual-boot with it. But for some reason there are sectors near the end of the drive filled and I can’t seem to find a way to remove the data so that I can safely shrink the partition. I know I have sectors near the end full because I am using Defraggler to analyze my drive (not to defrag it). I can see what files need to be moved/deleted but short of actually deleting some drivers and/or other necessary files, I am completely stuck. This the diskmap: I am only able to shave off that last 1.72GB of space from the drive which isn’t even enough for the most minimal Linux install.

  i have acer al1702w lcd monitor in my office.. somehow i restarted the system using the reset button as the os stoped responding.. since then the 1440x900 resolution option in the display settings is not appearing.. the intel graphocs is 82945G... and as always the h/w guys at the office are of no help.. they start blurting out their theories that this the best resolution... even though i show them that the max resolution for the monitor is indeed 1440x900.. and its not that the 82945g cant handle it... as it was working before.. i installed the latest drivers for this graphics but still im not finding that option... how to force 1440x900 resolution... oh tes the os ix xp pro sp2 Thanks..

  I'm currently trying to figure out why a European chain retailer is delaying a dv7 [remaining code number is not same with american]; it is listed in their site for several days and while ordered on Monday they still don't have it in their central storage. In an earlier call I was advised that since Intel announces the processor now it may start dispatching from the 6th. Is that true? Is HP obligated not to dispatch it before the 6th? (normally/legally or as a 'deal between gentlemen'). Does anyone know if HP dispatches normally dv7s now? Did they intentionally not dispatch them to retailers before the CES?

  We are using a Meru enterprise wireless network with 180 APs. Recently, many users connections are dropping frequently. After much troubleshooting, we have determined much of the trouble is due to some settings in the advanced properties of the wireless nic on our notebooks. Now we want to send out the changes in a Zenworks bundle, but I cannot find these settings in the registry or anywhere we might be able to send out as a remote package. Does anyone know where to find these settings for an Intel wifilink 5100 card other that the NIC properties itself? We really do not want to manually configure 600 notebooks.

• How do I hookup a dual video card Crossfire rig to a single monitor?

  I just received a new Alienware box preinstalled with two nice shiny ATI 6950 graphics cards. My goal is to use both of them to give me really good resolution and frame rate on my single monitor. There's zero documentation with the Alienware box and nothing I can find online. Do I just plug the monitor into one of the cards, and expect the two cards to do magic internally? The ATI Crossfire website indicates a need for an "external crossfirex connection cable". Do I need to buy one of these? If so, what kind of cable is it? The AMD Catalyst Control Center shows the second card as "Linked" but when I go to the AMD Overdrive section, the second card is at zero temperature, and clock, suggesting it's not actually doing anything. What do I need to do to make use of both cards? Is it something that doesn't kick in until I do something graphically intensive?

• Visual Studio 2010 Graphic Artifacts

  This problem started happening to me once I installed SP1 onto my Windows 7 Ultimate install. When changing between tabs, or even just hovering my mouse over buttons, VS2010 starts artifacting. It's bad enough where I often times can't see any of the code I'm working on. Sometimes just the button the mouse is over will go black, and other times the entire code panel will turn a black and grey pattern. This problem only happens with Visual Studio 2010 (2008 works fine). The problem remained when I upgraded Visual Studio to SP1. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled Visual Studio and the graphics drivers several times now, and I'm about ready to reinstall Windows 7, but I figured I'd ask for suggestions first. Google, as well as searching through Stack Exchange, did not turn up anything useful.

  Since I moved my computer there's no display when I plug my screen in the video card but works fine in the mother board. I tried reseting the cmos, but I still have the same problem. The fans are spining and there's a light from the card. I tried the DVI ports and the HDMI Here's my build. I have it for 2 months and everything was working fine. Do you think it's the video card? • Explorer.exe - No such interface supported and other issues

  The problem started when I uninstalled my ATI graphics driver and i used a driver cleaner. After i restarted win7 and it got to POST the screen just went completely blank. So i Used system restore from the repair menu to get back on. I found out that if I ran chkdsk the display just goes black after restart on startup and i have to use system restore to get back on windows7 not sure why this is. When i right click desktop and choose 'Screen Resolution' it says No such interface supported. Also when I click items such as device manager in the windows explorer it does not do anything. I have tried re-registering the DLLS but that did not do anything.

  I have a PNY NVIDIA Quadro FX 580 graphics card with 1x DVI and 2x DisplayPorts. The DVI port works fine with both my Viewsonic monitors but I cannot get either of the DPs to work using the supplied DP to DVI adapter; all I get is a "no signal" on either monitor when connected to either DP port. The NVIDIA Control Panel shows that the second monitor is not connected when in fact it is. How do I get the second monitor to work?   I recently quit gaming so I took out my (GeForce GTX 550 Ti) video card and switched back to the (cheap) integrated card because I don't want the dedicated card using up power & making unnecessary heat/noise. But now I get lag when I watch high-res movies, or when I open several videos at the same time, but I don't want to go back to my (big/expensive) video card because that seems like overkill. • Video has become blurred and smoothed out?!

  Hi, Since yesterday video and graphics on my Windows 7 desktop seem to have become smoothed out and blurred slightly and I'm not sure why. The last thing I did on the machine was play Fallout New Vegas for the first time. An example can be seen in the picture here screenshot - note how smoothed out the character on the right seems, lots of definition looks lost. It's really annoying and happening regardless of what I watch. We're shooting for an AutoCAD/SolidWorks/YouTube 1080p capable environment. I can't see how such a small and low profile card could possibly have the horsepower to handle such GPU computations for a big environment like that. We're going to have up to 64 VDIs per server, and are a 500-1000 employee count sized company. Someone enlighten me please! Determining which route to go (between RemoteFX and VMware View/PCoIP) and the hardware (NVIDIA 4GB non-Quadro/Tesla GPUs vs Teradici card). Servers have three 4x, three 8x, and one 16x PCI-E lane. Two of the 8x lanes will be occupied by SAS RAID cards.

• Ubuntu 9.10 freezes when HDMI port is connected

  I have a Sony Vaio FW350 with a HDMI output. I'm trying to use it under Ubuntu 9.10 with a LG LCD monitor 21,5'. The laptop has a Intel 4500 video card. I've tried two approaches: Boot the laptop with the HDMI cable connected and monitor turned on. Result: LCD Monitor keeps turned on but the whole screen is black and Ubuntu do not seem to be initializing. Boot Ubuntu until the end. I then connect the HDMI cable into the Laptop. The mouse and the whole system freezes. In both cases the only way to turn off the laptop is holding the power button. I've looked around the internet for similar problems, but only found workarounds for the same problem with VGA input, not HDMI. I also tried to use metacity before connecting the cable, but still got the same result. Any hints?

• After turning my monitor off and on, it will display only a white screen

  About a month after installing a new graphics card, I started encountering a rather frustrating problem. Namely, if I turn my monitor off for any significant length of time, then turn it back on, it displays only a white screen. Previously, restarting could fix the problem. However, after leaving the computer off last night, the problem persists. An internet search turned up this site; however, the monitor cable is not loose. As for the insides of the monitor - Well, I could poke around, but I risk making it worse if it's not the monitor. Any such instructions should be clear, detailed and include pictures. Further updates as events warrant.
