• VirtualBox Ubuntu Server with DNS

  I just want to have a local server inside my VirtualBox that offers dns functionality like www.example.local = 127.0.0.1 . Host: Ubuntu 11.10, Guest: Ubuntu 10.10 On my server I can already ping www.example.local - so I configured my virtual host correctly. Question is, how can I address www.example.local from outside my VirtualBox? I searched Google and askubuntu and found dnsmasq. I installed dnsmasq on my server and followed all steps on help.ubuntu. On my host system I've set 192.168.178.91 to the list of dns servers (192.168.178.91 is the IP address of my local server which uses a bridged network adapter). Thing is, I still cannot ping (or connect to) my example.local virtual host. It gives me an unknown host response. How can I set up my DNS server correctly?

• Networking Client Server Packet logic (How they communicate)

  I want to know what is the logic behind server client communication through packets for a real time game. for example the server sends x packets then the client receives x packets and processes them.. Basically what is the process to keep the client and server in sync and able to receive and send packets. more in depth example of what I want to know: client step 1 wait for a packet step 2 read x packets step 3 process x packets step 4 send x packets and so on... I need to know the very basic outline of the communication. Big questions are: 1) do I send and read packets all at one time? i.e for loop though the incoming packets array list and read them all or one every server loop or what... 2) what order should I do things i.e first receive then read then process then send etc.. 3) what I asked above a step by step of what the server / client should do.. What is the fastest and easiest technology stack for database and server in this case? I am open to use Ruby, Nodejs and anything that do the job fast and easy. • Basic Ubuntu FTP Server

  I would like to setup a basic FTP server on my Ubuntu Server install. I have been playing with VSFTPD, but am having issues getting the server to allow me to create directories and copy files. I have set the system to allow local users, but it appears that doesn't mean I get access to create directories. This may be an instance where I need to be better grounded in Unbuntu server setup in order to configure this FTP server adequately. The end goal is to be able to move files from my local dev folder into my www folder for deployment. Directories need to be able to move as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• sell applications that run only on a GPL v2 Server

  I have been testing Pentaho BI server community edition, and after reading their licensing terms I found out that the community edition is under GPLv2. As you may know the server is intended to host different types of files and applications (like reports, olap cubes,etc...) My question is : are we allowed to sell applications that run on the GPLv2 server ? (we will maybe modify the server source code a bit but we won't charge it to our clients. thus the modified GPL server will be just an execution environment or a container for the reports and applications that we intend to sell) ? this suggests that our clients must install the GPL v2 edition first and then buy from us the reports that work on it but not their source code. • Problem with connect to server using FTP(with login)

  I am unable connect to my remote account using Ubuntu's "Connect to Server" option after moving on to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. In Ubuntu 10.10 I used to connect to my FTP server by going to Places-Connect to server-FTP (with login) After giving the userid and password the remote folder would mount immediately but now it is showing a busy icon at top until I close the window after some time. I have also tried to connect using Ctrl + L from a Nautilus window using sftp://user@server but result is the same. Even though I could connect to my FTP server using gFTP, the default one from Nautilus is a better option to me.

• SSL Certificate error: verify error:num=20:unable to get local issuer certificate

  I've been trying to get an SSL connection to an LDAPS server (Active Directory) to work, but keep having problems. I tried using this: openssl s_client -connect the.server.edu:3269 With the following result: verify error:num=20:unable to get local issuer certificate I thought, OK, well server's an old production server a few years old. Maybe the CA isn't present. I then pulled the certificate from the output into a pem file and tried: openssl s_client -CAfile mycert.pem -connect the.server.edu:3269 And that didn't work either. What am I missing? Shouldn't that ALWAYS work?

• Windows Server task manager displays much higher memory use than sum of all processes' working set s

  I have a 16 GB Windows Server 2008 x64 machine mostly running SQL Server 2008. The free memory as seen in Task Manager is very low (128 MB at the moment), i.e. about 15.7 GB are used. So far, so good. Now when I try to narrow down the process(es) using the most memory I get confused: None of the processes have more than 200MB Working Set Size as displayed in the 'Processes' tab of Task Manager. Well, maybe the Working Set Size isn't the relevant counter? To figure that out I used a PowerShell command [1] to sum up each individual property of the process object in sort of a brute force approach - surely one of them must add up to the 15.7 GB, right? Turns out none of them does, with the closest being VirtualMemorySize (around 12.7 GB) and PeakVirtualMemorySize (around 14.7 GB). WTF? To put it another way: Which of the numerous memory related process information is the "correct" one, i.e. counts towards the server's physical memory as displayed in the Task Manager's 'Performance' tab? • "This computer has dynamically assigned IP addresses" error when installing Active Directory Domain Controller

  This is a working Windows Server 2008 that I should install Active Directory on it. I found http://www.howtogeek.com/99323/ and followed the steps. After Additional Domain Controller Options, I'm asked the question "This computer has dynamically assigned IP addresses". As I see, the message states that Dynamic IP addressing has been used for the server, while this is wrong. When I come to Network And Sharing Center, and click on Local Area Connections - Properties - Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) - Properties, I see that the main IP address (as well as DNS Server) and also all other IP addresses are assigned statically. So it should be OK. I cannot believe any server using dynamic IP(s)! Note: No IPv6 has been set for the server. Please tell me why the error is given and which of the options available, should I choose? Note that it's a production server and is working with many users in WORKGROUP. No change should be affected nor to the IPs, neither to users connecting to the server.
