  • Is there an Emacs-analog for the VI '.' command to repeat-last-typed-text

    I've used emacs for decades and always wondered, but kept on coding, if there was a way to type in something, them move the cursor and insert the same text, like the VI . command. Instead what I do is to type the text, set the mark, backup, copy the region, go to the next spot (often just C-n, down one line) and then pre-arg yank, C-u C-y. It's the overhead of set mark, backup and copy region that makes me just go ahead and retype the thing.

    I have a zoo object oi.zoo with weekly data. I would like to sooth this with a 12-month moving average (easy enough), but I can't figure out how to anchor the right edge of the the moving average window at the end of the month (to correspond with the on which factors I am regressing).   • Why isn't my Ruby object deleted when the last reference goes out of scope?

    Hi gurus, I've found a weird effect when trying to track down a memory leak in a Rails app. Can anyone explain what's going on here? Save this script as a plain Ruby script (Rails not necessary): class Fnord def to_s 'fnord' end end def test f = Fnord.new end test GC.start sleep 2 ObjectSpace.each_object do |o| puts o if o.is_a? Fnord end When I run this via ruby 1.8.7 (2009-06-12 patchlevel 174) [i486-linux] I get the following: bash $ ruby var_test fnord Although the variable f is out of scope, there are no other references to the single Fnord object, and I've garbage collected, the object still seems to exist. Is this a nefarious memory leak of some sort, or am I completely missing something about Ruby? Further, if I change the test method to this: def test f = Fnord.new f = nil end I get no output. But surely this should not change the semantics here? Many thanks!

    I am running net share from a ruby script to delete a windows network share. If files on the share are in use, net share will ask the user if they want to go ahead with the deletion, so my script needs to inspect the output from the command, and write out Y if it detects that net share is asking it for input. In order to be able to write out to the process I open it with access flags "r+". When attempting to write to the process with IO#puts, I get an error: Errno::EPIPE: Broken pipe What am I doing wrong here?     I have a table of Users and a one to many UserSkills table. I need to be able to search for users based on skills. This query takes a list of desired skills and searches for users who have those skills. I want to sort the users based on the number of desired skills they posses. So if a users only has 1 of 3 desired skills he will be further down the list than the user who has 3 of 3 desired skills.     I have organized a menu. Its HTML is as follows: <ul class="topmenu"> <li><a href="sample.html">Text 1</a></li> <li><a href="sample.html">Text 2</a></li> <li><a href="sample.html">Text 3</a></li> <li><a href="sample.html">Text 4</a></li> <ul> This is a horizontal menu, so I have floated the list items to left to appear them in a horizontal line. I could have used display:inline to appear them in a single line, but since IE does not support it and I don't know any other way to do so, I used float:left;. It's css is: .topmenu { list-style:none; margin:0; padding:0; } .topmenu li { float:left; } This brings the menu in a perfect horizontal line, but the entire list is floated to the left. I want to bring the .topmenu to appear in the center of the document and keep the listitem inside it floated towards the left. I found that this is achievable by defining width property of the .topmenu, but I dont want to fix its width as the list-items are dynamically generated and thus could increase and decrease. Any one know of any solution?

Questions I have in my mind are : How does browser actually caches stuff, does it request for to see if the cached file has changed on the server or not, What is the Ideal way for a developer to make use of browser chaching to its full, but also to be able to push new changes on the site with no hassle at all. I think if browser somehow chaches my CSS and JS and Images, and then just makes a checks for their modification to the server everytime, this can sort the issue. but I am not sure how to do it, waiting for interesting answers :)

    Hi, Let's say I have a MySQL database with 3 tables: table 1: Persons, with 1 column ID (int) table 2: Newsletters, with 1 column ID (int) table 3: Subscriptions, with columns Person_ID (int), Newsletter_ID (int), Subscribed (bool), Updated (Datetime) Subscriptions.Person_ID points to a Person, and Subscription.Newsletter_ID points to a Newsletter. Thus, each person may have 0 or more subscriptions to 0 or more magazines at once. The table Subscriptions will also store the entire history of each person's subscriptions to each newsletter. If a particular Person_ID-Newsletter_ID pair doesn't have a row in the Subscriptions table, then it's equivalent to that pair having a subscription status of 'false'. Here is a sample dataset Persons ID 1 2 3 Newsletters ID 4 5 6 Subscriptions Person_ID Newsletter_ID Subscribed Updated 2 4 true 2010-05-01 3 4 true 2010-05-01 3 5 true 2010-05-10 3 4 false 2010-05-15 Thus, as of 2010-05-16, Person 1 has no subscription, Person 2 has a subscription to Newsletter 4, and Person 3 has a subscription to Newsletter 5. Person 3 had a subscription to Newsletter 4 for a while, but not anymore. I'm trying to do 2 kinds of query. A query that shows everyone's active subscriptions as of query time (we can assume that updated will never be in the future -- thus, this means returning the record with the latest 'updated' value for each Person_ID-Newsletter_ID pair, as long as Subscribed is true (if the latest record for a Person_ID-Newsletter_ID pair has a Subscribed status of false, then I don't want that record returned)). A query that returns all active subscriptions for a specific newsletter - same qualification as in 1. regarding records with 'false' in the Subscribed column. I don't use SQL/databases often enough to tell if this design is good, or if the SQL queries needed would be slow on a database with, say, 1M records in the Subscriptions table. I was using the Visual query builder tool in Visual Studio 2010 but I can't even get the query to return the latest updated record for each Person_ID-Newsletter_ID pair. Is it possible to come up with SQL queries that don't involve using subqueries (presumably because they would become too slow with a larger data set)? If not, would it be a better design to have a separate Subscriptions_History table, and every time a subscription status for a Person_ID-Newsletter-ID pair is added to Subscriptions, any existing record for that pair is moved to Subscriptions_History (that way the Subscriptions table only ever contains the latest status update for any Person_ID-Newsletter_ID pair)? I'm using .net on Windows, so would it be easier (or the same, or harder) to do this kind of queries using Linq? Entity Framework? Thanks!

    I have activities A and B. The A is the one with LAUNCHER intent-filter (i.e. the activity that is started when we click the app icon on home screen). A launches B using startActivity(new Intent(A.this, B.class)). When the user has the B activity open, and then put my application into the background, and later my application's process is killed, when the user starts my application again, B is opened instead of A. This caused a force close in my app, because A is the activity that initializes the resources my app needs, and when B tried to access the uninitialized resources, B crashes. Do you have any suggestions what should I do in this situation?

    I am using ASP.Net MVC but this probably applies to all MVC patterns in general. My problem, for example I have companies and in each company I have a list of contacts. When I have selected a company I can see its details and a list of the contacts for that company. When I want to add a new contact for that company, should the implementation of that action go into the company controller as an "AddContact" action or should it go into the contact controller into a "New" action and we pass the Company ID in the URL? What is the usual way of dealing with this sort of thing in ASP.Net MVC? Is there a better stategy?

    I have been given data which cannot be interpreted by my software unless it has a lowercase letter at the end. The data was delivered with an uppercase letter at the end. Somehow I need to first recursively loop through all folders and find whether the filename ends with a letter and then change it to lowercase. I think python could do this, but I don´t know how,.     A set of forms (using Zend_Form) that I have been working on were causing me some headaches trying to figure out what was wrong with my XML configuration, as I kept getting unexpected HTML output for a particular INPUT element. It was supposed to be getting a default value, but nothing appeared. It appears that the following 2 pieces of XML are not equal when used to instantiate Zend_Form: Snippet #1: <form> <elements> <test type="hidden"> <options ignore="true" value="foo"/> </test> </elements> </form> Snippet #2: <form> <elements> <test type="hidden"> <options ignore="true"> <value>foo</value> </options> </test> </elements> </form> The type of the element doesn't appear to make a difference, so it doesn't appear to be related to hidden fields. Is this expected or not?
