• 12.10 Wireless networking

  I downloaded ubuntu 12.10 using WUBI and cannot connect to the internet. I removed it and downloaded ubuntu 12.04 still cannot connect. This I assume rules out the program being the problem. I reinstalled 12.10. When loaded I get the same message W/red (x) stating Internet not connected. I went to the Settings drop down box and it does not reveal the network list but (enable networking has a ck mark). Am running a HP Laptop with a w/7/64 OS that has a kill switch that indicates (orangeno connection) I downloaded 12.10 on my desktop (on the same network) and everything OK. I tried to follow the instructions in the help menu but got lost and confused . Sincerely Dan Additional Info per request Broadcom 802.11b/g Wlan Internal pc [hp laptop] P.S. I've been out of town for about a month. TKS for your gitback I did install 12.10 via cd and everything ok,but retried alongside 7 and unable to connect to internet,also took laptop and hard wired using ethernet cable and everything ok. stumped again and running out of ideas!!!

• For a large website developed in PHP, is it necessary to have a framework?

  I am wondering if it is necessary to have a framework or if it is a must-have if I plan to make a large website. Large website could mean a lot of things: in other words, multiple dynamic web pages (40-50 dynamic pages, mysql content) and a lot of visitors (+- a million hits per month). The site will be hosted in a dedicated server environment. I know that it could simplify coding for a developer team, that it includes libraries and a lot of advantages. But I just feel that I don't need that. I think that learning how it works, managing it and installing it would take more time and I could use that time to code. I write PHP the simplest way I could (with performance in mind) and I try to reuse my code/functions/classes most of the time and I make sure that if another developer joins the team, that he won't be lost in the code. I am also planning to use MemCached or another Cache for PHP. As I said, the site will be hosted in a dedicated server environment but will be entirely managed by the hosting company. I am pretty sure the control panel for me to control the basic stuff will be Cpanel. For a developer like me that only knows PHP, Javascript, HTML, CSS, MYSQL and really basic server management, I feel that it seems to complicated to have a framework. Am I wrong? Is it worth the time to learn all about it? Thank you for your opinions and suggestions.

• Nifty default controls prevent the rest of my game from rendering

  I've been trying to add a basic HUD to my 2D LWJGL game using nifty gui, and while I've been successful in rendering panels and static text on top of the game, using the built-in nifty controls (e.g. an editable text field) causes the rest of my game to not render. The strange part is that I don't even have to render the gui control, merely declaring it appears to cause this problem. • Win7 no longer available after installing 12.04

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 but my Windows 7 partition seems to have been lost. It is in sda2. Can anyone help me how to get this Windows 7 partition back without having to reinstall Windows 7? • Can T520+Bumblebee run an external monitor via DisplayPort?

  Using 64-bit Ubuntu 11.10 and integrated (Intel) graphics, I can run the 1600x900 laptop display plus a 1600x1200 external monitor connected to the VGA adapter. But my external monitor is 1920x1200 so I have black stripes on each side. I believe the resolution is limited like this as the maximum resolution available from the Intel GPU is 2560x1600 = 4,096,000 pixels and I'm asking for a 3520x1200 = 4,224,000 display (with 1200x300 lost above the laptop screen). At 3200x1200 = 3,840,000 pixels, the Intel GPU seems happy. Under Windows, the same limit exists when using the VGA adapter, but if I turn Optimus on then I can connect the external monitor to the DisplayPort and get its full resolution and an extended desktop. I've seen that Bumblebee can run apps on the DisplayPort using the 'optirun' command. My question is: can Bumblebee run the DisplayPort in concert with the Intel card running the laptop screen creating a large virtual desktop (as on Windows)? If so, are there any pointers to how to do this? I tried once, failed, and dropped back to Integrated Graphics (and black stripes) as I could find no reports of this configuration working.

  Hello, This question is focused on extracting the advantages and disadvantages of using Web based Frameworks: such as Cake PHP, Zend, jQuery, ASP.NET). This question is completely language agnostic. Let me start with the notion of "Standing on the shoulders of Giants". Advantages: Empowers Developers - by taking features that would have previously have taken 100's of lines of code and compressing them into one simple function call empowers developers to integrate more complex features into their Web Sites. Allow for Quicker development of applications - this is very relevant for people that need websites created in a very small window (has anyone any examples of this?) Lower Costs - allows programmers to pass cost savings onto the customer, a whole new range of customers generated that wanted a website but previously could not afford the higher development costs. Disadvantages: Lost Understanding - by relying on the features of a framework a developer is in danger of loosing understanding on how things work (underneath the hood). The configuration cliff - once you go further than the configuration of your framework your productivity drops right off, it can be difficult to implement features outside of a frameworks configuration. Developer tramlines - you (the developer) has to do things the way that the developer want you to do things. Security issues - giving people these tools to develop professional looking websites fast is a potential risk, people can quickly create professional looking websites for fraudulent companies. • How should an undergraduate programmer organize his time learning the maximum possible?

  I started programming lately(pre-final year of a CS degree) and now feel like there's a sea of uncovered treasure for me out there. So, I decided to cover as much as is possible before I look out for a job after graduation. So, I started to read books (The C++ Programming Language, Introduction to Algorithms, Cracking the Coding Interview, Programming Pearls,etc ) participate in StackExchange sites, solving problems (InterviewStreet and ProjectEuler), coding for open source, chatting to fellow programmers/mentors and try to learn more and more. Good,then what's the problem?? The problem is I am trying to do many things, but I am doubtful that I am still utilizing my time properly. I am reading many books and sometimes I just leave a book halfway (jumping from one book to another), sometimes I spend way too much time on chatting and also in getting lost somewhere in the huge internet world, and lastly the wasteful burden of attending classes (I don't think my teachers know good enough or I prefer learning on my own) May be some of you had similar situation. • Branding/Restricting a Software by License/Serial

  I have made a POS System for a client of mine using MS Access Server-Client approach. He asked me to brand his software to allow only a certain "number" of users (cashiers) to access the POS System, and must be determined to the license his client will buy. EX: 10 User License = 10 Cashiers ( not necessarily 10 users, it can be 30 users, shifting) = it means 10 PCs will be installed with the client software I made. How and where do I put the logic that will determine if it is licensed or not. What I have done: I have created a serial key generator using Name. Problem is it can be duplicated once you give than name+serial combination, it would still work. I am counting the number of users logged at a time. This could be problematic as I am using MSAccess and not MSSQL. I have scrapped this idea, He also asked me if I could just put serial+mac address combination. That I could do but he will have a hard time implementing it and selling it if he needs the mac address of every computers to be installed with my POS. I am at lost on what can I do. Would like to ask for tips and suggestions. Thank you.

• Is my client correct that I cannot take a vacation as a subcontractor? [closed]

  I have 2 clients who I do ongoing work for as a subcontractor. Both are sporadic and part-time. Company A sent me to a 3 day certification course out of state. The following week I was scheduled for a 3 day vacation. I warned company B three weeks prior to these events. During my training that Company A was paying for, Company B asked me to leave the training to workon something for them that needed immediate attention. I declined. However I made arrangements to work on it in the evening and in the early mornings after they threatened to take the work and all subsequent work for this client to someone else. I lost all networking and fun from that trip... The following week I was in Florida and was again asked to do more work on the project after the feedback from the client. The integrated product personnel would not cooperate/return any of our calls so I did the best I could. I turned in the work, explained the issue and then was gone for 3 hours. When I returned, all my access to the project had been revoked and after a week of my calls and emails I found out they replaced me. I sent an invoice 3 weeks ago and they tell me they owe me nothing because I did not do the whole project and they cannot bill the client for what I did, because they are billing for the second contractor who started over. I was told that they realize I was on vacation but as a subcontractor I lose the ability to just disappear. I was gone 3 hours! Is this normal, correct, legal?? Not only did they ruin my class and my vacation, but now they expect me to not demand payment? They ended our relationship and I was in the middle of another project of theirs too. They told me to immediately cease all work for them. How do I get paid for the work I have yet to invoice this month?

• Dynamic quadrees

  recently I come out writing Quadtree for creatures culling in Opendungeons game. Thing is those are moving points and bounding hierarchy will quickly get lost if the quadtree is not rebuild very often. I have several variants, first is to upgrade the leaf position , every time creature move is requested. ( note if I would need collision detection anyway, so this might be necessery anyway). Second would be making leafs enough large , that the creature would sure stay inside it's bounding box ( due to its speed limit). The partition of a plane in quadtree is always fixed ( modulo the hierarchical unions of some parts) . For creatures close to the center of the plane , there would be no way of keeping it but inside one big leaf, besides this brokes the invariant that each point can be put into any small area as desired. So on the second thought could I use several quadrees ? Each would have its "coordinate axis XY" somwhere shifted ? • I can't get grub menu to show up during boot

  After trying (and failing) to install better ATI drivers in 11.10, I've somehow lost my grub menu at boot time. The screen does change to the familiar purple colour, but instead of a list of boot options it's just blank solid colour, and then disappears quickly and boots into the default entry normally. How can I get the bootloader back? I've tried sudo update-grub and also various different combinations of resolutions and colour depths in startupmanager application with no success (640x480, 1024x768, 1600x1200, 16 bits, 8 bits, 10 second delay, 7 second delay, 2 second delay...) edit: I have already tried holding down Shift during bootup and it does not seem to change the behaviour. I get the message "GRUB Loading" in the terminal, but then the place where the grub menu normally appears I get a solid blank magenta screen for a while. • Grub problem - Command prompt

  Update: Thanks to all who helped. I gave up and am going to re-install. Not the end of the world, no files will be lost :-) This time will be backing up grub haha. Thanks again, I really appreciate the community's help on this. I was going along fine when the new pae kernel came down, and it had some bug where the sound was all messed up. So I used startup manager to choose the older pae kernel and rebooted. But startupmanager must have fuXXored my grub. When I re-booted, I get thrown directly into memtest and thats it. I tried to re-install grub using the live disc method that I found in many places. That changed something so I get a prompt and the message: "GNU grub version 1.99 ubuntu. Minimal BASH-like editing is supported. Type help for complete list." But then I tried the live CD fix again and now am back at the memtest... What can I do to get my system running again? UPDATE: Just to be clear,when I start up I get a blinking cursor in the top left, and the word 'ON' in the middle of the screen. Then, after a good minute or two, the memtest starts.

• Webmatrix The Site has Stopped Fix

  I just got started with AzureWebSites by creating a website by choosing the Wordpress template. Next I tried to install WebMatrix so that I could run the website locally. Every time I tried to run my website from WebMatrix I hit the message “The following site has stopped ‘xxx’” Step 00 – Analysis It took a bit of time to figure out that WebMatrix makes use of IISExpress. But it was easy to figure out that IISExpress was not showing up in the system tray when I started WebMatrix. This was a good indication that IISExpress is having some trouble starting up. So, I opened CMD prompt and tried to run IISExpress.exe this resulted in the below error message So, I ran IISExpress.exe /trace:Error this gave more detailed reason for failure Step 1 – Fixing “The following site has stopped ‘xxx’” Further analysis revealed that the IIS Express config file had been corrupted. So, I navigated to C:\Users\<UserName>\Documents\IISExpress\config and deleted the files applicationhost.config, aspnet.config and redirection.config (please take a backup of these files before deleting them). Come back to CMD and run IISExpress /trace:Error IIS Express successfully started and parked itself in the system tray icon. I opened up WebMatrix and clicked Run, this time the default site successfully loaded up in the browser without any failures. Step 2 – Download WordPress Azure WebSite using WebMatrix Because the config files ‘applicationhost.config’, ‘aspnet.config’ and ‘redirection.config’ were deleted I lost the settings of my Azure based WordPress site that I had downloaded to run from WebMatrix. This was simple to sort out… Open up WebMatrix and go to the Remote tab, click on Download Export the PublishSettings file from Azure Management Portal and upload it on the pop up you get when you had clicked Download in the previous step Now you should have your Azure WordPress website all set up & running from WebMatrix. • Blocking popups and ads

  I'm having a fight with ads, popups and tracking cookies. But i'm having some issues. Software used: Chromium 18.0.1025.168 Extensions used: Adblock Plus (Beta)1.2 AdBlock+ Element Hiding Helper1.1.9.18 Better Pop Up Blocker2.1.6 Ghostery3.0.0 With this configuration, i'm always getting this error: Warning: This extension failed to modify a network request because the modification conflicted with another extension. I know if i disable "better popup", this goes away. It's perfectly normal, due to those extensions trying to block the same things. Problem is, i can't live without all of them! Can anyone advise me about some good configuration? Can't live without adblock plus, because i hate ads. Betterpopup blocker is essential too (believe me, chrome doesn't block a lot of popups, and i have a website or 2 that can proove that.) And ghostery is a must... i can't bare the idea of being tracked all the time by some companies. So i'm kinda lost here! everything is needed, but they conflict with each other. i mean, it has to exist a perfect combination out there, i know i'm not the only one hating the privacy issues nowadays! really thankful for any tips guys

• Suggestion: ALLFILES option for RESTORE

  The default action when performing a backup is to append to the backup file yet the default action when restoring a backup is to restore just the first file.I constantly come across customer situations where they are puzzled that they seem to have lost data after they have completed a restore. Invariably, it's just that they haven't restored all the backups contained within a single OS file. This happens most commonly with log backups but also happens when they have not restored the most recent database backup file.It is not trivial to achieve this within simple T-SQL scripts, when the number of backup files within the OS file is unknown. It really should be.I'd like to see a FILES=ALLFILES option on the RESTORE command. For RESTORE DATABASE, it should restore the most recent database backup plus any subsequent log files. • MS Marketing Strategy

  I found this week’s Windows Phone 8 event interesting.  Not just because it looks like some fantastic new features in the new OS but because of the wait for release.  If I were a Nokia shareholder (which I am not) I’d be very unhappy with MS announcing that Windows Phone 8 will NOT work with current hardware.  So, there are some very nice Lumia devices that are now end-of-life that have arrived relatively recently at carriers and retailers. I understand that MS needs to demonstrate progress against iOS and Android and that there is some Windows 8 tie-in that they are trying to capitalize (and MS IS still all about Windows).  However, it’s a bit of a kick to partners that have invested in the platform with pretty decent devices (Samsung, HTC and of course Nokia). Personally, I’m still using a Samsung Foucs.  I was seriously considering upgrading to a Lumia 900 (we just got Lync mobile available) but will now wait it out until new devices arrive with Windows 8.  If MS had waited to announce, I would happily have upgraded to the Lumia and when I found out it couldn’t be upgraded then that would be a gamble I took and lost and I’d live with it.  Now, however, I can see the future and know that waiting is the better option for me so that is 1 sale Nokia will miss out on.  Based on some chats I’ve seen on mobile forums I’m certainly far from the only one. • Is there a formula for this?

  TL/DR: Any way to work out if known numbers between a known start and ending figure should be positive or negative numbers? I am developing an application in PHP which can import and read PDFs. The PDFs are financial ones such as bank statements with records of transactions in and out of a bank account. I only have PDFs to work with, no other formats such as CSV unfortunately. I convert the PDF to HTML using pdftohtml and start parsing the data, the intended end result is an array of transactions. So far I have it working smoothly collecting dates, descriptions and balance. Converting the XML instead doesn't help. There are other pieces of transcriptional data such as debit or credit amounts. In the PDF, the credit amount is in one column and the debit amount is in another column so it is quite clear in the PDF. However, when converted to HTML, the formatting is lost and therefor I don't know if the amount was a credit or debit amount. So, my question is, given a starting balance and an ending balance and several known figures in between, is it possible for a programme to work out if those known figures in between are credit or debit amounts? I imagine there could potentially be several combinations of those known values to reach the ending balance so I'd like to apply a formula to return the correct credit/debit sequence only if its the only possible solution. If there are several ways of adding/subtracting the known values to reach the end balance, I can ask the user to look at it manually but I'd like to keep this to a minimum if possible. Possible to do, do you think? Thank you in advance for any help.

• Need Directions to become a programmer [closed]

  Before youguys go on about how there are many types of programmers, please read through the post. Long term goal: Develop my own software (company) Short term goal: Get a job that involves coding/programming Current status: Support Analyst (at a software company but does not involve any programming) with 40k salary, 3rd year computer engineering student I had everything figured out. I'm going to develop a 2D scrolling game for iphone or android, publish the app, sell a bunch, and then apply at a studios as a software developer. And then something hit me. I think I need to get a job that involes programming to learn as much as I can in the shortest time possible. So I got a phone interview at a fast growing start up software company, passed that no problem, but then had to take an online technical assessment. That failed miserably. I thought that if I could just present myself, show that I am hard working, positive attitude, eager to make self improvements, type of a guy, I could get the job. I was wrong. And now, I am lost. Im thinking of staying with my job until I find a new one as a programmer. I will be working, self studying, and trying to make this happen without finishing university. I forgot to mention that the online technical assessment was based on data structures/algorithms, OO design, runtime complexity. I was hoping that I could get some guidence. • How to debug a fatal system crash - [graphical loop DOTA2]?

  Whilst playing DOTA2, I occasionally and apparently randomly seem to be experiencing a fatal crash where the display freezes fixed and the audio loops over approx the last .5 of a second. Now, I'm interested in resolving this - but my trouble is I don't know where to start. The error appears non-reproducible (I've tried returning to games and deploying the same combination of events in hopes of pinning to to a certain shader etc), and I don't know which part of 'the stack' it might be coming from. Variables that occur to me: I custom build this system, did I do something wrong - is my PSU not providing enough power to the graphics card? I am running Steam and DOTA under Linux, could this new software have a bug Might it be something to do with my ATI Catalyst graphics drivers Is some other background process interfering I'm usually mid game when this occurs, so i quickly kill the power and reboot (when i'm lucky i can get back in with only 1-2 mins lost!). So my question here relates to logs. Where should I start to look or how might I set up logs to help me pin down a fatal crash of this kind by recording moments up to / before a crash and is this likely to be something I should push Steam to do, or is there something at a system level? Then perhaps I can return with a more specific question and perhaps even a bug report :) Many thanks in advance.

• Why not XHTML5?

  So, HTML5 is the Big Step Forward, I'm told. The last step forward we took that I'm aware of was the introduction of XHTML. The advantages were obvious: simplicity, strictness, the ability to use standard XML parsers and generators to work with web pages, and so on. How strange and frustrating, then, that HTML5 rolls all that back: once again we're working with a non-standard syntax; once again, we have to deal with historical baggage and parsing complexity; once again we can't use our standard XML libraries, parsers, generators, or transformers; and all the advantages introduced by XML (extensibility, namespaces, standardization, and so on), that the W3C spent a decade pushing for good reasons, are lost. Fine, we have XHTML5, but it seems like it has not gained popularity like the HTML5 encoding has. See this SO question, for example. Even the HTML5 specification says that HTML5, not XHTML5, "is the format suggested for most authors." Do I have my facts wrong? Otherwise, why am I the only one that feels this way? Why are people choosing HTML5 over XHTML5?

• Trouble installing gnome-shell-extensions-user-theme, dependency/PPA conflict?

  I installed gnome tweak tool, and am trying to set up custom themes and whatnot. So, trying to install gnome-shell-extensions-user-theme. me@computer:~$ sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-extensions-user-theme [sudo] password for me: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. • Can't start system due to mdadm failing

  I used to have a 5-disk RAID5 partition, all working very well. I have then decided to add 3 more disks on it, totaling 8 equal disks. I've opened Webmin and just asked to add the disks. Then I've realized the three disks had NTFS partitions, wich mdadm didn't complain, so I tried to stop the growing to remove the Windows partitions. I've tried to remove a disk using the same Webmin, but (as you might guess and call me fool...), the system became unstable. By restarting the system, I've started receiving these messages: "udev[126]: timeout: killing '/sbin/mdadm --incremental /dev/sdh1' [311]" "udev[124]: timeout: killing '/sbin/mdadm --detail --export /dev/md0' [316]" I've formated the system disk, hoping to get a system up and running. I did that with all RAID disks disconected, so everything was fine. I then reconnected the disks, wich was also ok. And finally installed mdadm using apt-get. By reboot, the system has found the mdadm intention of growing the system, so the same messages appear again. I other words: I can't even reach a command prompt to do something. Any ideas of what to do? I believe I could turn off the system, disconnect the disks and look for the mdadm.conf file. Would that be a good idead? I'm no Linux expert, so I'm really lost here.

• X crashes and GNOME loses all its configuration

  About every 3 days on my desktop (always on), X crashes, gdm restarts and it dumps me at a login screen. When I log in Gnome appears to have lost a lot of its settings: it plays sounds in weird places, UI elements look like they're from the 90s (GTK+ defaults) and it's generally pretty hideous. Note everything works fine. It's not like my profile doesn't exist because I can browse the internet fine (Firefox knows my bookmarks, history, passwords, etc) and my desktop is unscathed (apart from the icon theme). Manually restarting gdm doesn't fix this. I have to do a full reboot. Now I'm almost certain that this is a nvidia issue causing X to baulk (I've seen similarish threads on nvnews) and I'm happy with that (my fault for running their latest drivers all the time). What I'm concerned about is why Gnome looks so fugly. Is there anything I can do to force it to reload its settings without restarting the whole computer. Restarting is an issue for me as I run several daemons that other computers on the network depend upon. This is what I mean by ugly/fugly... Look at that scroll bar!
