• Upgrading NAS hard drives

  I was thinking of buying a NAS for home-usage. I've never used a NAS or had HDDs set up in Raids. Before I commit myself to moving all my data to a NAS I need to find out how difficult it is to upgrade and replace the NAS' hard drives. Suppose I set up a Raid 1 NAS with two 1TB hdds. At some point in the future I will use up all the space and will have to install two new 2TB hdds. Now I'll need to migrate the data from the old disks to the new ones. Will I have to hook up one of the old disks in a computer and copy all the data back in the NAS? Or can the migration be done using only the NAS? I realize the answer to the question might depend on the NAS model. Being a simple for-home solution I was thinking of getting something along the lines of D-link's 323.

• How to track down a file descriptor leak?

  I have a java process (Glassfish) which is leaking file descriptors. I know this because I get the helpful java.io.IOException: Too many open files exception. I can look in /proc/PID#/fd and see all the open file descriptors. When I use lsof I get a very large number of entries like this: java 18510 root 8811u sock 0,4 1576079 can't identify protocol java 18510 root 8812u sock 0,4 1576111 can't identify protocol java 18510 root 8813u sock 0,4 1576150 can't identify protocol I see 12 new ones created per minute. What options can I use on lsof or what other tools are available to me to help track down socket file descriptors where the protocol can't be identified? thanks, chuck

• Roundcube can't connect to PostgreSQL database

  I'm trying to install Roundcube on a CentOS 5.5 server, with a PostgreSQL 8.1.22 database. The first page of the installer script, that checks for the presence of php libraries and such, gives me green OKs across the board. I even went out of my way to install the optional ones. Page two generates me two configuration files (main.inc.php and db.inc.php) which I put into place. Page three is where things go wrong: Check DB config DSN (write): NOT OK(MDB2 Error: connect failed) Make sure that the configured database exists and that the user has write privileges DSN: pgsql://roundcube:password@localhost/roundcubemail The info you see there (user roundcube, password password, server localhost and database roundcubemail) is all correct. The database roundcubemail belongs to the user roundcube and it has write permissions. I have no clue why it can't connect to that database. I'm managing it with phpPgAdmin, which is running on the very same Apache, on the same server!

• One of my apache processes is huge - how can I find out why?

  I'm running Apache 2.2.12 with mod_wsgi, hosting a Django site. Most of the apache child processes weigh in at about 125MB RSS, but occasionally I see one child balloon to 1GB RSS. At this point there's usually 1 huge process (1GB), a couple of large ones (500MB) and the rest are still ~125MB. These are the mod_wsgi daemon processes. I've tried using memory leak tracing in Python to see if it's the Django code, and I see no leaks. Looking in the logs doesn't show any particularly strange requests. I'm stumped on how to figure out what's causing this - any ideas? Also, any workaround ways to kill the large apache process when it gets too big, without bringing apache down?   i came across a apache httpd 2.2 configuration recently in which multiple ServerRoot-directives were defined, each followed by individual prefork Settings. Sort of like this: ServerRoot root1 <IfModule prefork.c> StartServers 5 MinSpareServers 5 MaxSpareServers 10 MaxClients 150 MaxRequestsPerChild 0 </IfModule> [vhost-configs] ServerRoot root2 <IfModule prefork.c> StartServers 10 MinSpareServers 10 MaxSpareServers 20 MaxClients 250 MaxRequestsPerChild 0 </IfModule> [vhost-configs] In my understanding these are global settings one overriding the other. But is that true and is it still true with the second ServerRoot directive between the prefork blocks? Thank you in advance EDIT They are not in different conditional blocks and both server roots are used in that way that files with relative paths to both are correctly included. I just wondered if a <ServerRoot> would initiate a new scope in which all global statements would not override the configuration of previous ones.

• Use all 5.1 speakers with a 2.1 audio source

  Hi! I just bought a 5.1 surround sound speaker set for my computer in my bedroom. The rear speakers are next to me in bed while the front speakers are at the other end of the bed at my feet. While I enjoy the surround sound during movies that support 5.1 sound, I would like to have my rear speakers working when listening to podcasts, or other 2.1 channel sound. How can I do this? When I enable "Speaker Fill" in the Realtek Hd Audio manager the sound only comes out of the front and center speakers with a few background noises that come out the rear ones. But since my ears are closer to the rear speakers, I'd rather have the sound come out of them. Let me know of any ideas! Hmm seems like the only option is to set the rear speakers to "Front Speakers" and change it to stereo in the Realtek HD audio. But still that take alot of steps and it doesnt not use the center speaker Thanks

  If been using "dbForge Query Builder" lately and I'm gotten used to the ease of building and testing a query, specially for those complex ones with inner joins, aliases and multiple conditionals. The expiry date of the trial is about to come, and while wanting to remain on the legal side for this I'd rather not pay the 50USD it costs (although I must say it's pretty cheap for what it does). So my question would be: Are there any free alternatives to replace this visual query builder? I've failed to find any and fear that my only two options are paying for it, or going to the dark side.

• scheduled chkdsk on Windows 7 blinking the hard disk light every 5 seconds, what can I do?

  PG&E (the local electricity company) came and took out the old power meters and put in a new ones by brute force and with no advance notice in our neighborhood, so my computer went down in power. So I went to Windows 7's drive C and schedule a Disk Cleanup (chkdsk) on the next boot up. When it boots up, it says A disk check has been scheduled To skip disk checking, press any key within __ second(s). and then after it shows To skip disk checking, press any key within 1 second(s). it just sits there, with no further message. the hard disc light blinks every 5 seconds. So what is to be done now? I certainly don't want to brute force power off again.

• Director .app (Mac application) files won't copy to a PC

  Hi there I have a few Mac applications that I would like to transfer to a Windows computer. One was created using Adobe Director 11.0 and the rest were created using Adobe Flash CS4. The one created by Flash has no troubles whatsoever. The ones created using Director can't be copied to a Windows machine. I am using Snow Leopard and I tried to copy to Windows XP from CD, which was burned on the Mac. Development took place on the Mac as well.

• Dual Screens with Widescreen monitors?

  I want to build a new computer and purchase new monitor(s). At my old job I had two 20" 4:3 and I absolutely loved this setup. However, the stores in my country only seem to have widescreen monitors nowadays, and the only 4:3 LCDs i have been able to find are 17". My question is: Do widescreens suck for using them as dual monitors? Can anyone with this setup comment on their experience with having multiple widescreen monitors? Would it be better to get three 17" 4:3 LCDs instead of two widescreens? If i go with widescreens, should i go with the smallest ones i can find? Purchasing a single big widescreen monitor is not an option for me, since being able to maximize an app on a specific area of the screen is a must have for me and im not willing to use "hacky" apps for this purpose that do a crappy job. • iPod Nano 5th gen Album Artwork

  I am an album artwork fan. I just got all of these brand new alternate artwork covers for my albums and singles. Eventually, i got bored of them, and i wanted the original ones back. So i got on iTunes, and changed the original album covers to the primary covers. I synced my ipod, but it still showed the new covers on it, not the originals. I figured a temporary way to fix it, by deleting the new covers i got, making the originals the default. There has to be an easier way, though. p.s. this also works in vice-versa. I will add the new covers, but before i exit, i change the primary cover to the original. When i change it back to the new one, my iPod will still only show the original Thanks for helping!

• dhcpd won't let go of old leases

  We have DHCP setup to hand out leases in the following range: 192.168.10.190 - 192.168.10.254 (roughly 65 leases) Our small business network only has about 30 computers that use DHCP. We noticed that dhcpd stopped handing out new dynamic leases to the computers, even though there are definitely not 65 computers on the network. Why has it stopped handing out leases? Is it not releasing old un-used leases? How do we tell dhcpd to let go of old leases and start handing out fresh ones again?

• How to recover Virtual Machines in Virtualbox?

  For some reason, all of a sudden, all virtual machines are gone from the User Interface in virtual box. I suspect CCleaner has something to do with it, but that's not the point. Both the virtual hardisks and the .xml files for the machines are still in their respective folders. How can I use them to get my virtual machines back into virtualbox? I tried simply creating a new machine from the old virtual hardisks, and it worked with the ubuntu guest, but not with the windows one. Plus, it'd be nice to get my old machines back instead of having to create new ones, that would keep me from having to fix some shortcuts as well as reconfigure shared folders and other stuff. • Can't see attachments in OWA but can in Outlook

  Hi, I have several users, including myself, that cannot see attached images (.jpg) in OWA. I can see them in Outlook but in OWA the attachments, the link to see them, are not included. I see the line for attachments in the message. But it's just empty. I have other messages that have been sent to me from outside of the domain and I can see them. Just not internally sent ones. Was hoping for help. Thank you. I did not see anything in the file levels of the registry to prohibit .jpg files. Exchange 2003 Server, Outlook 2003, OWA for 2003.

• sql and web encoding problem

  Guys, I've got an encoding problem I believe. I have upgraded from phpBB2 to phpBB3. The old databases were in latin1, the new ones have utf8 encoding. Already during the upgrade process some rows of the DB were only read partly into the new version, because of strange characters as it turned out. When I use PHP's mb_convert_encoding() function to convert those strings to UTF8 they end up e.g. as 0x0093, i.e. they must have been some kind of double quotes. Even after doing this conversion, they still show up as 0x0093 in the browser (the squares with 0093 in them when the browser does not know what to display). Can someone explain the problem here? I'm a little confused and afraid I don't see all the dependencies that need to work to have the correct encodings and the correct display thereof...

• ssh-agent key timeout with screen or tmux on bastion host

  Normally I have ssh-agent running, I ssh to my bastion host then open a tmux session and connect to other boxes through that. Key forwarding works for any sessions that I open from that point forward. If I resume my tmux session after closing terminal, sleeping my laptop, whatever, my key forwarding on my bastion sessions still work, as does forwarding on any new sessions. Existing ones don't work, though. I have a little thing in my bashrc that keeps key forwarding working when I resume tmux, but I am having trouble figuring out how to get it to keep working for sessions open within tmux. For example, I have bastion01, dbhost01, dbhost02, webhost01, and webhost02. If I open a connection to bastion01, start tmux there, and then connect to dbhost01 and webhost01 forwarding works. If I close that connection, reconnect and attach my existing tmux session, then add connections to dbhost02 and webhost02, key forwarding works on the 02 boxes, but does not on the 01. Please help!

I started testing, creating Runtime [Runtime.getRuntime (). exec (...)] with all possible methods [addShutdownHook (...);] and now I'm trying to ProcessBuilder [new ProcessBuilder (...);] and the famous BufferedReader [new BufferedReader (new InputStreamReader (proceso.getInputStream ()));] but I could not find the way to do it. • Windows 7: Open File - Security Warning box appears for every app on the desktop

  Whenever I double-click to open an executable on the desktop (.exe, .bat, etc.), or a shortcut on the desktop that points to an executable, the "Security Warning" pops up and asks me "Are you really sure you want to open that? Stuff from the Internet is dangerous!" I don't usually mind this warning and don't want to disable it globally, but now I'm getting it for any executable on the desktop, even ones that I didn't download from the Web and don't have the Mark of the Web alternate data stream. (That is, streams -d * shouldn't and doesn't help.) This started fairly recently, but I can't really point to anything I did that triggered it. It only occurs in one user account on the machine; the other account doesn't have this problem. Running System Restore didn't help. How can I fix the problem and make the pop-up warning appear only when it's supposed to?

  I am trying to write a script that will allow me to replace the user associated with certain permissions with another username. For example say I have a user Administrators and a user Administrator. Using icacls.exe I want to be able to replace all of the permissions given to Administrators and give them to Administrator. I also want to remove all instances of Administrators. So far I have used the following commands: icacls File1.txt /save acls.bin icacls . /substitute Administrator Administrators /restore acls.bin But when I run icacls File1.txt I get: User-PC\Administrator:(F) NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(I)(F) BUILTIN\Administrators:(I)(F) User-PC\User:(I)(F) I have read that icacls has trouble dealing with inherited permissions but I was wondering if there was a method that allowed you to edit all of the permissions including the inherited ones.

I saw in vim's help (:help 'statusline) that one can set a fixed width of some items. How would you go about fixing the above items in a way, that if one item is missing, or no matter of its width, that it doesn't affect the other ones ? (i.e. so I can always look at a known position and know what is there ... not move my eyes left and right searching for the thing I need).

• How to extend Wi-Fi signal across rooms?

  I moved into a new place and my old Wi-Fi router just doesn't have the range to get into all the rooms. I've been investigating a lot of options and I'm wondering what other folks have done here. Moving the current location of my primary Wi-Fi router is not an option thanks to our cable provider and our landlord. Buy a bigger, beefier router (seems expensive). If so, should I go for one of those draft 802.11n ones to avoid microwave/other Wi-Fi router interference? Set up a router with DD-WRT as a repeater Leech the neighbors' open Wi-Fi access point. Alright, I was kidding about the last one but I'm genuinely curious as to what my best option is.

• IMAP and Folder Subscriptions

  Hey guys I'm trying to figure out how folder subscriptions work with IMAP Clients and, in my case, in an Exchange 2007 environment. I have managed to deduce, I think correctly, that the folder subscription settings for individuals are stored centrally on the mailbox (At least, having configured 2 profiles on thunderbird, on 2 different machines, they subscribe to the exact same folders and dont display the exact same ones). The point of this being that I have had 2 or 3 different people in the past day report to me that they are having problems subscribing to certain folders, and having certain folder subscriptions remembered (particularly sub-folders). This is across both Thunderbird 2 and 3. can anyone suggest anything? Tom

  Hi, I was suggested when I have some further questions on my older ones, to create newer Question and reffer to old one. So, this is the original question: CPU I/O communication OK, I have just 2 more questions. 1, How is MMIO set? I mean, lets say I have developed some extension card with PCI interface. How do you say to memory controller to redirect desired memory space to my card´s RAM? I mean, I think standart text-mode VGA MMIO adress is 0x8000. Is this HW set (every motherboard automatically redirects 0x8000 adress to PCI-E) or its just standart and can be changed (VGA says to motherboard: give me memory mapped IO at 0x8000) 2, Can one expansion card have more MMIO connections? I mean, lets say I have card with 10 Bytes of RAM. Can Bytes 0-4 be mapped to 0x0 and bytes 5-9 to 0x5000? Please, if you know about some good article about this, please post link. Thanks.

• ajaxterm: cannot type some characters (j, b, u for sure)

  I googled and came up empty. Anyone have experience with ajaxterm? Given my login name is "jae", just as on this site, this inability to enter "j" kills ajaxterm for my purposes. It looked so good. Damn. EDIT: Dammit, it was just Firemacs with its idiotic keybindings. Removed all the ones which are really "emacsy", and all's fine now. And the disappearing window was due to me changing the rows/columns, which requires a restart (of a daemon that doesn't show up in pstree, weird).
