• Attach certificate to remote desktop connection - not gateway services

  I have a Windows server that I want to attach a 3rd party signed certificate for remote desktop connections. This is not a remote desktop services server, i.e. it is just remote desktop administration. There is lots of info on the internet about attaching a certificate to remote desktop services, but I want to attach mine to just plain remote desktop connection for administration purposes. If anyone know how to do this, please holler! I have imported the certificate into the Remote Desktop store in the certificates mmc snap in, and have tried running the wmic command in this question (Configure custom SSL certificate for RDP on Windows Server 2012 in Remote Administration mode?) but this fails. • How do I compare two Excel documents?

  The compare function in Word 2007 is very handy -- is there a similar capability in Excel 2007? I can't seem to find it... The documents I'm trying to compare are essentially two versions of the same content. Unfortunately, "Track Changes" has not been used. If file comparison not a built-in feature, what alternatives are out there for doing this?   DD-WRT, Open WRT , Tomato or Third-party firmware projects ? What are the compelling reasons to choose between these? I used to be a great DD-WRT fan until I realized that the author was deceiving users by publishing it as a OSS, but made it very cumbersome to download the source and change it (requires you to download GB’s of source files) .Also their bandwidth monitoring feature was part of the paid version, which IMHO is a killer. Having said that, DD-WRT just worked. And I think that’s great..

• Exclude path from Windows 7 search?

  It's really quite incredible how bad Windows 7's search seems to be. The latest problem I have with it is that I want to search for filenames including the string "user", so I go to the directory I want to search in (C:\Users\jez\testing), type *user* in the search box, and hit enter. It gives me... every single file. Because "user" is in the path of every file, with everything being under "C:\Users..." OK, this is useless. Is there a way to just search for the string within files rather than their paths, or do I need to download some decent 3rd party search software?

• Is there a way to snip part of the screen with a hotkey?

  I'm able to launch the snipping tool, select an option and then copy based on my selection. Is there a way to launch a default snipping option so that I can create partial screen screenshots without using a third-party tool? Essentially, I'm looking for winkey+S without having to use OneNote. Both OneNote and SnagIt implement this perfectly. If OneNote is running, pressing winkey+S allows me to click and drag any portion of the screen, including pop-out menus with selections that are active. SnagIt does almost the exact same thing, invoked by the prt screen key.

• ATI Radeon HD 5770 Cooling

  I have a Radeon HD 5770 manufactured by ATI. In the course of using compressed air to clean it the fan shattered. I put a case fan on the card to cool it, but it's not doing a great job; the temperature goes to nearly 100 sometimes. The card is not overclocked or anything, the PC itself is clean. I looked around for a third party cooling system but the only one I found was the Accelero L2 Pro. It's low on stock and I don't know how great it will be, some review say it may not fit on all 5770 cards. Does anyone know of another one that will work? Help is much appreciated.

• Is there any Mac Pro hardware parts that can ONLY be purchased thru Apple?

  I'd like to know if I need to be concerned about any hardware parts that I should include in a brand new Mac Pro purchase, instead of trying to hunt it down on 3rd party vendors (or whitelist vendors / hardware suppliers). The main components I'm interested for "upgradeability" are: Processors (If starting with Two 2.4GHz Quad-Core "Westmere"); RAM (If starting with the least possible, which seems to be 6 x 1GB); Video Cards (If starting with one ATI Radeon HD 5770, can a 2nd one be purchased elsewhere?) Hard-Drives (Since these are mounted in specialized trays [if I'm not mistaking], are they also sold elsewhere? And can they be bought as SSDs?) Power Supply (Do I need to be concerned about this at all, or does it auto-adjust depending on the new component upgrades?) I just want to be sure by choosing a Mac Pro with lower component specifications that I can in fact purchase upgrade parts cheaper elsewhere. Thanks!

• How do I configure Shrewsoft's VPN client to only route traffic to a certain IP address through the VPN?

  We're using Shrewsoft's VPN client to connect to a third party development server. However, it seems to be configured to send all or nothing through the VPN. The devs have to disconnect from the VPN to get email/internet access back. The server that needs to be accessed via the VPN is on a specific (local - 10.x.x.x) IP address and a specific ports. Can we configure the Shrewsoft client application to only route traffic to that one address and/or port through the VPN and to route anything else though the usual channels? If so, how is it done? I'm not a VPN specialist and the options are confusing. In the absence of any Shewsoft VPN client specific advice, what should I be search for? Split tunnels?

• Fixing Outlook 2010's notorious 'Disabled Search Indexer' Add-in problem

  I have been impressed with the improvements in search introduced in Outlook 2010. Unfortunately, in the last week search has stopped working for me. I have tried all the obvious repair tasks such as repairing office, disabling all add-ins, rebuilding the index, compacting the PST, but no luck. It appears that 'mssphtb.dll' (Used by search) keeps crashing and as a result Outlook Disables it. I have tried re-enabling it, but Outlook immediately disables it again. I have had a look in the Windows Event Log as well, but Outlook does not appear to log any errors that occur when loading add-ins. A lot of people appear to have the same problem, but no fixes so far. I am considering installing Xobni, but I prefer to make Outlook work the way it is supposed to and not rely on 3rd party applications.

• Microsoft secure downloader not finishing download

  I am downloading Windows 8 RTM using Microsoft's secure downloader provided by my school's DreamSpark account. The OS I'm currently on is Windows 8 preview. Once the download reaches 100%, it restarts to 0%. I open the download path folder, and find the en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.sdc file and the en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.scd.log file. The log file contains only one line : "Unpacking File: C:\Users\en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.sdc" I was unable to unpack the file using 3rd party software, and there seems to be no official software made for unpacking this type of file. What can I do to avoid downloading the OS illegally, even though I have my own product key?

• MySql calculate number of connections needed

  I am trying to figure my needs regarding web service hosting. After trying Azure I have realized that the default MySql they provide (through a third party) limits the account to 4 connections. You can then upgrade the account to 15, 30 or 40 connections (which is quite expensive). Their 15 connections plan is descirbed as: "Excellent choice for light test and staging apps that need a reliable MySQL database". I have 2 questions: if my application is a web service which needs to preform ~120k Queries a day (Normal/BELL distribution) and each query is ~150ms(duration)/~400ms(fetch), how many connection do I need? If instead of using cloud computing, I will choose a VPS, how many connections will I be able to handle on a 1GB 2 cores VPS? Thank you!

• Host a SSTP VPN Server on Windows 8

  I have a small server computer running Windows 8 at home. Currently it is hosting a PPTP VPN server using the build-in Windows 8 functionality for that. What I would want is something more secure, like an SSTP VPN server. However, I can't find any functionality of windows 8 or 3rd party software that can HOST a SSTP vpn server on Windows 8. I've only seen Client stuff and vpn pass trough services via google, all which i don't want/need. The only HOST stuff i find via google is the PPTP i set up currently. • How to put 1000 lightweight server applications in the cloud

  The company I work for sells a commercial desktop/server app that runs on any non dedicated Windows PC or server and uses Tomcat for all interactions with the application. Customers are asking that we host their instance of the application so they don't have to run it locally on their own servers. The app is lightweight and an average server, in theory, could handle 25-50 instances before users would notice a slowdown. However only 1 instance can run per Windows instance (because the application writes to a common registry branch) so we'd need something like VMWare to create 25-50 Windows instances. We know we eventually need to reprogram to make it truly cloud-worthy but what would you recommend for a server farm or whatever for this? We don't have the setup to purchase our own servers so we must use a 3rd party. We have budgeted $500 - $1000 per year per customer for this service. • Website hosted on IIS is not accessbile

  I have two sites set up in IIS on a remote machine RM; one on regular port 80, and the other on port 5773. From my local machine LM, I can access the site on 80, but I cannot access the one on 5773; I get a status code of 502 and an error code of 10060 (A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond) when I try to do this. I can access the 5773 site via IIS when I am logged into RM (i.e. by right clicking on a page on the site and going 'Browse'). I can also access pages on the 5773 site via a browser, again when I am logged into RM. I just can't do the same via a browser when I am logged into LM. I have ensured that port 5773 is open for outgoing traffic on LM. Could the problem be that I also need to ensure that port 5773 is open for inbound traffic on RM?

• Files turned into folders on external hard drive

  I have a networked hard drive where I like to store audio/video/software and all sorts of other files for my house. While the software files are all intact and working, many of my video and audio files have been turned into folders! Can anyone explain why this is happening, how I can prevent it, and if it is possible to revert these "folders" back into files. Thanks much! An example of what the folders are named: "Highschool Graduation.avi", "Birthday party.avi", "Somesong.mp3" The HDD is connected to a Linksys E4200 router (Firmware Version: 2.0.37). This is how the HDD is networked.

• Is Windows Media Player able to play DTS audio?

  I'm trying to play DTS audio with Windows Media Player 12 on Windows 7. For a MPEG-TS file with video and DTS audio, only video is played. A file containing only a DTS audio stream is rejected. But: WMP is able to play the DTS audio stream of a DVD. So, Is Windows Media Player able to play DTS audio, or not? And if: How do I make him play my DTS files? I did not find any good resources of the supported codecs. Just things like "WMP can play .mpg files, ..." VLC is able to play all of the above files. I do not want to install third party codec packs, thats not the question!

• Windows 7 connect to Lion file sharing

  Trying to access my Mac from a Windows 7 computer, I fail with the infamous error 86 incorrect password. Now this appears to be a well-known problem with countless threads on the internet giving as many "solutions" as there are discussion threads about it (mostly ranging from installing third-party commercial samba servers, to switching to some other protocol, to compiling a plain-vanilla Samba installation - the latter which I will probably do when I give up this :) ) I am stubborn, and I believe there must be some problem here that can be solved or worked around, but there is surprisingly little detail about this problem. It appears to have something to do with a mismatch of authentication methods.   I formatted the recovery partition right after installing Windows 8. I'm curious as to why File history only allow the use of external HDD. Instead of using the Recovery Partition. I can't find a way to use it. I decided to use it exclusively for Restore Points. Is there any way to make the Recovery Partition exclusively for the use of File History? Or should I use 3rd Party programs instead, (Easeus Todo Backup, Macrium Reflect, etc)?

  I need to improve our account management (using Active Directory) for a customer support site with 50+ computers. The default "AD"-way is to give each user their own account. This adds up with a lot of administration with adding/disabling/enabling user accounts. To avoid this supervisors have started to use shared "general" accounts like domain\callcenter2 etc and I don't like the idea of everyone knowing and sharing accounts and passwords. Our ideal solution would be to create a group with computers which requires no login by the user. I.e. the users just have to start the computer. Should I configure auto-logon with a single user account like domain\agentAccount? Is there anything else to consider if I use the same account for all users? How do I configure the actual auto-logon with a GPO on the group? Is there a "Microsoft way" without 3rd party plugins? Or is there a better solution?

This is primarily for virtual machine instances, but it would be helpful to also create instances on hardware. • Rename multiple files as "Modified Date/Time" using cmd or Powershell

  I have hundreds of JPG files in a folder. I want to rename each file so that the file name is replaced with "Modified Date/Time" of that file, namely DD.MM.RRRR.HH.MM.jpg. For example, Before After 001.jpg 11.01.2011.16.58.jpg 002.jpg 12.01.2011.09.32.jpg 003.jpg 14.01.2011.12.41.jpg ... ... Since colon (:) cannot be used in file names, the colon between HH and MM must be replaced with a period. I don't want to use a 3rd party tool. Can you provide me with the code to achieve this in Powershell or command line?

• Is there a way to have a working search bar in Explorer with Windows Search Service disabled?

  I had to disable Windows Search Service (turn it off in Windows Features) for the reason that it was constantly using the hard drive in an excessive way (maybe because I've got very large quantities of files on my PC), noticeably slowing down my computer, and the Windows.edb database file grew way too large, about 2.5 GB in size. But the side-effect of it is that now the search bar is gone from any Explorer window and I miss this useful feature. So my question is, is there a way to stop Windows Search Service torturing my hard drive and still being able to search for files and folders directly from Explorer, perhaps using some third-party software?

• Apache rewrite module, 404 not found

  I've been having some problems with rewriting directory styled addresses into query strings for my php scripts. Here's the code RewriteRule ^(\w+)/?(\w+)?/?(\w+)?/?$ /index.php?section=$1&category=$2&subcategory=$3 [QSA] This line works perfectly fine on both my local wamp and lamp server, and my friend's lamp server. However on the web hotel I've been using (freehostia) I only get a 404 error when trying to browse a "directory" that isn't really there (supposed to be generated by php). I've tried connecting their support but they only say 3rd party applications aren't their job. I know rewriteEngine is turned on because some basic redirect attempts have worked. Perhaps this line of code could be better written? It's quite important that extra queries are appended and would be nice (but not necessary) if the last slash could be left out. Any help is appreciated :)

• Multicasting Windows 7 Image

  I am trying to deploy some new machines with windows 7 for the first time in our computer labs. We used to use third party imaging software and then run sysprep after the image was copied(XP), but it seems you can't go that route with windows 7. We set up a new imaging server with the windows system image manager, but when we try to multicast the image it pretty much takes down our whole staff and faculty network. I heard you can turn on a multicast feature on our cisco switches to help with the issue, but that it also slows the switches to a crawl. Another idea we have tried was pulling the the computer lab switch off the main network and plugging the imaging server directly into the computer lab switch so the multicast doesn't take down our network, but it doesn't seem to work without being able to hit a domain controller. Is there a way to multicast without taking out the network? I feel like I am missing something... Thanks in advance

• How to install a "virtual" network card on a virtual server?

  Hi, We have purchased an unmanaged VPS windows hosting solution from one of the UK based companies. We have Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition. We need to install certain third party applications on that server. Unfortunatelly, one of the applications requires a MAC address to be present at all times - this is their way of making sure that software is not pirated (which it isn't). We have tried installing a virtual loopback network card, but this has brought the server down - i.e. we couldn't connect using remote desktop any longer. At the moment we are limited with what we can try. This is an unmanaged solution, therefore any support including restarts is rather costly. Are you aware of any low-risk solutions? Thank you
