• Tool to create unscaled call-out from a thumbnail image?

  I'm creating an online tutorial for some software and need to include screenshots. In particular, I want to highlight the position and appearance of a given control in a large screen. Given that I haven't got the space to show the screen at full resolution (at least, not alongside the tutorial text), I figured I would use a kind of call-out from a thumbnail. Here's my poor first effort, made in Paint.NET: Given how long this took me to craft, I'd really like to find a tool to speed things up (and make them look a little more professional!). Preferably a free one, too - or one that has a downloadable trial. The exact style it produces isn't that important, provided it achieves the desired effect. Can anyone help me out? Thanks, Mal. P.S.   I need to forward e-mails to different mail accounts by different conditions. The aim is to create mail notification scheme for my company. I'd like to setup server on dedicated mail domain for it. Is there any software that helps to get my aim (Linux)? Examples: 1) forward all e-mail sent to [email protected] to x@x, y@y, z@z (no conditions) 2) forward e-mail sent to [email protected] where subject contains '[finance]' to a@b and b@b 3) forward e-mail sent to [email protected] where subject contains '[fault]' to s@s and s2@s. Receivers' domains are different. P.S. Now we use Gmail filters to get this functionality, but it's unstable and hard to maintain.

Now i want a program which shows a prompt window when lock/logoff/shutdown, in this way i won't forget any more. Indeed i develop a program (some words and two buttons), and configure this program started when lock/logoff/shutdown in group policy, here is the question: how can i prevent my windows 7 shutdown/logoff/lock? it means i click the button "yes, i want" my pc still running and chrome or something showed up, if i click the button "no, thanks", my pc will shutdown/logoff/lock. please help, thx! i am looking forward to you. ps: i am not good in english, hope you understand. thx again!

• Amazon - install a complete server on EBS

  is it possible to install a full working OS with a webserver, db, and all needed stuff on an EBS storage? If so, would I immediatly gain benefits by mounting this EBS on a better instance? Otherwise (if I cannot install a complete image, or if you don't think it's reasonable) can I install the software so that I only need to mount the EBS on a new instance to have it working? I purchased a Medium Reserved Instance, but when there will be the need to get a better instance I'd like to move the whole db/website, I'd simply buy a better instance and then attach the EBS. Is it possibile? I'm imaging about it like an hard drive that would be mounted on a better server. Of course, more RAM would allow me to increase caching limits, and that's ok, but I don't want to reinstall anything (the main website is a magentocommerce and it's pretty painful to move it). P.S. is the Standard EBS (100 IOPS) valid or do I need to choose a Provisioned IOPS (up to 1000 IOPS)?

• Firefox addon to display all shortucts

  Is there a firefox addon that would display all shortcuts on a web page and also browser shortcuts. for eg: c is the keyboard shortcut for gmail compose. So either on a particular key combination or by hovering over the compose button it should show a "c" to indicate there is a shortcut for this operation. I guess If we keep on seeing the shortcuts popping each time when we do an action then we can start using and remembering more and more of it. Thanks. • How to efficiently restore Library folder partially deleted on OS X

  I am using OS X Lion, and trying to delete some files I did accidentally (from home directoy): rm -fr Library I realized about this some 15 seconds later and did killall rm Some folders have been deleted, of course, inside "Library". Now the system seems to be ok, but I fear what will happen in case of reboot. I have a Time Machine backup from 5 days ago. I wonder if it would be a good solution, just to copy whole "Library" folder from my home directory from backup and replace this one. Or, what do you think would be the best approach? PS: In order to restore just deleted directories inside "Library", in which order does "rm" start to delete directories, alphabetically?

• What would Stack Exchange's yearly expenses be if it were to be using a third party host?

  StackExchange manages it's own servers, as it should, but if SE were to be hosted on a 3rd party "cloud" hosting (like Amazon's), what would it's monthly / yearly expenses be(keeping everything else the same)? A detailed answer comparing it to the bills that Stackexchange boots currently (including power/property/staff) would help. (PS: I know that the blog is a good resource. I also understand that managing your own hosting is almost the same as setting up a hosting company and using it for your own needs. Plus is this a question for meta or does it fit within serverfault's purview?)

Essentially, I want to be able to do something like a ps -ef | grep <process_name> to get the PIDs and then run another command (if required) to identify the CPU... Is prstat able to do this? I'm making an assumption that as each database instance is started each one uses a different CPU. I'm not sure if I'm understanding this correctly... The reason I want to do this is because Sun hardware has slow CPU's, but lots of them. Therefore, to get the best performance out of it, I need to try and spread the load among CPU's... Thanks

• User cannot book a room resource

  Im having a problem with a specific user not being able to book a room resource. No error message is generated at all. The user attempts to add the room as a meeting resource and it simply doesnt register with the resources calendar. I have tested the resource with other accounts and other rooms for this user but it is only this room that is having issues for this user. This Exchange server was migrated from 2007 to 2010. All rooms except for the problem room were created back on Exchange 2007. This new room was created with Exchange 2010. Maybe this clue has something to do with the problem? • iPhone and Mac Twitter App Not Parsing HTML in Feeds

  I've come across this problem where my tweets on the iPhone and Mac Twitter app are not parsing the HTML properly. In any browser, the HTML is parsed fine. It only happens to the apostrophe character (') and on the iPhone and Mac Twitter app. Also, I'm using the dlvr.it service to push my Drupal blog posts to my Twitter feed. My initial guess was that it was the RSS generated by Drupal, but if that were the case, then the feed displayed on the browser would be affected too. Any ideas anyone? Any help would be very much appreciated. P.S: I apologize beforehand if this question already exists. I did search for it but based on what I queried, nothing came up.

• How can one create a bootable linux usb key that works on Mac (Intel 64 bit CPU) hardware ?

  Hi, I'm trying to create a bootable usb key with linux (debian) and that can be booted on Macintel hardware. I have read that MAC's EFI can only boot GPT GUID formatted disks. I'm desperately trying to find a good tutorial which explains how to create such a key. Here what I have done so far: create a GUID partition on te key using linux GNU parted create a HFS+ or ext3 partition on the key, with the boot flag on install a linux .iso with unetbootin While all steps were successfull and in some cases I could even boot on a PC, the step of booting on Macintel software failed (on a macbook). I need to precise that I holded the "alt" key while booting the mac and the only visible bootable disk was the hard disk. Thanks for any advice. PS: I have tried with rEFIt as well. In one case I had a "windows" icon but it then failed to boot with a message like "no system found"

  I'm using ~/.ssh/config for logging to the internal.local corporate server: Host internal.local ProxyCommand ssh -e none corporate.proxy nc %h %p But after closing session (typing exit), my sshd session on server stays still active (I see it through different connection). Hot do I close session or change my config in the appropriate way, to eleminate hang sessions? First check from the second, root session: ps -fu user_name user_name 861 855 0 16:58:16 pts/3 0:00 -bash user_name 855 854 0 16:58:13 ? 0:00 /usr/lib/ssh/sshd After logging out: user_name 855 854 0 16:58:13 ? 0:00 /usr/lib/ssh/sshd Just after scp files to/from the internal.local a new scp sessions still hangs on the server.

• Latexmk on OS X

  Does anyone use latexmk on OS X with either Preview or another PDF, dvi, or PS reader? I've recently switched from Linux and installed MacTex to use Latex. I am used to using Vim to edit the source file and having latex -pvc running so that it will update the preview on xdvi upon save. I am aware that I can run xdvi using XQuartz, but I have it setup to run fullscreen, so it is not very useful when I don't want to go into X11 mode altogether. The problem with using Preview is that it will only update from the PDF file when Preview receives focus. I could not figure out if there is a command to trigger Preview to reload the PDF file.

• How to set up an extended desktop on dual monitors in Kubuntu 9.04?

  I'm using my laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad T60) and I have a secondary monitor (which has a different resolution than my laptop screen) connected by VGA. Kubuntu recognizes the monitor and it functions but my desktop is mirrored (i.e. an identical copy) across the dual monitors (which is useless to me). How can I extend my desktop across both monitors? P.S. I googled it but the solutions I found weren't standard, they were hardware specific and you had to manually change system files, etc.. • Unable to connect to vrde virtualbox VM remotely

  So I've remotely created my first headless using ssh. Now I'm attempting to connect to this VM using RDP so I can install Ubuntu Server, but I cannot get connected at all. When starting the VM everything appears fine: $ vboxheadless -s WebTesting Oracle VM VirtualBox Headless Interface 4.0.16 (C) 2008-2012 Oracle Corporation All rights reserved. VRDE server is listening on port 4455. And showvminfo shows: VRDE: enabled (Address 0.0.0.0, Ports 4455, MultiConn: off, ReuseSingleConn: off, Authentication type: null) However I'm still prompted with the "enter your credentials" screen every time I attempt to connect. From reading the documentation null shouldn't prompt me with this screen at all... Any help with this is greatly appreciated. P.S. I am using ssh tunneling in putty to tunnel in to my network.

• Can i change the subnet on the vpn side of a server without having to change its whole lan (to avoid collission)

  Ohai, ive got a xp server with a client connecting via VPN. Problem (as we all know) is that sometimes the subnets clash. Instead of changing the whole server network every time this happens, cant i just have the server appear to have a different subnet to vpn clients? I have no interest in accessing other computers than the server on its LAN. I tried just turning off automatic dhcp in the servers vpn settings and changed it to 172.31.255.x. The client gets the address assigned alright and it can ping 172.31.255.1 but i cannot ping the server name (because the dns on the clients vpn connection points at 192.168.0.1?) wisdom? PS everything worked until the client hit a network with the same subnet as the server lan. thanks

  I'm struggling with some iptables rules. I'm a newbie in iptables. I found some resources where I get the following command related to iptables. This is stored in a file that will be executed. [0:0] -A PREROUTING -s 10.1.0.0/24 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 81 -j DNAT --to-destination 10.1.0.6:3128 Can anybody explain me what does [0:0] mean? • Vostro 1520 crash during bios update

  My Vostro 1520 (P8700 C2D) originally came with BIOS A02. This bios version have known problems with VT, so I had to upgrade to A05. During the upgrade, the notebook crashed. Needless to say, it won't boot anymore. The simple question is: is there a way to access the bios boot block to recover the bad flash with a crisis disk? I know that the MINI and the ALIENWARE models have this feature, but I can't seem to find anything about it in the Vostro machines. Any help will be much appreciated. PS: Dell's solution is to change the motherboard, but it will take several days, as the board isn't available in my country :( Regards, Deadmilkman

• Website is live but ping times out

  I have a client's website that is running on GoDaddy hosting and started behaving very strange recently. The site is up and running but when I try to ping it I get time out. The problem is PayPal doesn't work also Google Webmaster reported the site is down. The client spoke with support and they said there is no firewall or any other traffic filter on their side. The site itself is PHP. Any ideas are welcome. I've tried to send test IPN from PayPal to the payment URL and got: IPN delivery failed. Unable to connect to the specified URL. Please verify the URL and try again. Which makes me think that the website/server is inaccessible in some specific cases. • Enable group policy for everything but the SBS?

  I have created a new group policy to disable IPv6 on all machines. There is only the one default OU, no special configuration. However, this policy shall not apply to the SBS its self (nor the other DC at another location on a different subnet) because those machines do depend on IPv6. All the rest do not. I did see a recommendation to create a new OU and put that machine under it, but many other comments say that is extremely messy and not recommended - makes it high maintenance when it comes to changing other group policies. How can I apply this single group policy to every machine except for the domain controllers? PS - Yes, I understand IPv6 will soon be the new standard, but until then, we have no intention to implement it, and it in fact is causing us many issues when enabled.

• Error when trying to access Shared files from iMac [closed]

  I used to access all my Windows XP shared files on my Mac using Finder -- Window -- Connect to server. Now all of a sudden, an error crops up when I try to connect. I get the error "There was a problem connecting to the server "192.168.1.*" The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your internet connection and then try again. How can I remove this error and access my shared files from my Mac? P.S my network connections is fine.

• SQL Server 2005 transactional replication break before a configured number of retries

  We have a SQL Server 2000 Standard database with some tables being replicated (continuous transactional replication) to dozens of SQL Server 2005 Express and MSDE computers. The step 2 of the replication agent job (Run agent) is configured by default to retry every 1 minute for 10 times if some problem ocurr. Because the client machines get shut down at night (they are POS machines), we changed the number of retries to 5760 (4 days), so replication would not be broken at night and would not need to be restarted manually. But the problem is that every other day we have at least one machine with broken replication, with this error: The process could not connect to Subscriber 'POS986'. NOTE: The step was retried the requested number of times (5760) without succeeding. The step failed. It seems that SQL Server is not respecting the number of retries or the interval between retries as we configured. PS: I have restarted the replication job after changing the number of retries from 10 to 5760.
