  • How can I run a (16-bit) .COM executable that has been renamed to .COS?

    I'm trying to run a couple of 16-bit legacy DOS programs from a standard windows XP dos prompt. The problem is that the file extensions have been renamed from .COM to .COS and they are stored on read-only media and I can't copy them (special environment). Any tips on how to invoke such files despite the weird extension? If they had been 32-bit EXEs, it wouldn't have been an issue running them even without their proper extensions, but with these COM files, I'm unable to find a way to run them.

And I want to know if there could be any trouble with hardware? I mean if all the ports should work fine, keyboard special buttons, lights on keyboard, this fast boot technology (wake from hibernation in few seconds), etc. Thank you for attention and forgive me if this question sounds weird for some of you.

  • Copy all text in a LibreOffice Draw drawing

    I have a large flowchart, created in LibreOffice Draw (3.3.1), that I would like to copy all of the text from. I do not need, nor care about the order or structure, I just need all of the text from within the blocks. I can't seem to find any way to export without turning it into an image, and none of the "Paste Special" options allow me to get unformatted text. Is there a way to do this without retyping everything?

  • Difference to connect to LDAP by BindDn or by username

    We have an application which can only connect to a LDAP (AD) by using the BindDn. When I try to connect from the server which host the application using a simple LDAP client (LDAPAdmin) it connects sucessfully. Recently the sysadmin change the AD (probably to a new machine and new version) but we cannot connect to it using the BindDn anymore, we did not change anything on the settings (BindDn string) except the ldap url pointing to the new server. Is there a special setting on the LDAP server side to enable to connect using BindDn?

  • Script to restart server when no user is remotely connected

    I'm looking for something special : here is a windows server that is used for development by 4/5 people remotely working on it through remote control. I'm installing Visual Studio 2010 on it, and the installation won't continue until the server has been restarted. I'm looking for a way to reboot when the server is idle (when nobody is connected through remote desktop on it) so that the reboot doesn't bug anyone. Is there some software that can do that ?     Following on from this question: Can Apple Macintosh computers boot from a USB volume? Can I use any USB 2.0 DVD drive to boot a Mac from? I had a look around my local PC World today and only the more expensive drives explicitly state on the packaging that they were Mac compatible. Is this just because these products have been through Apple's hardware approval/testing programme, or do Mac's have some special requirement?

  • Can I combine two LANs into one to get double speed?

    Hey guys, I have 2 LANs in my own PC & 2 Routers (TP-Link WR941N each) with 2 internet accounts (512Kbps each) connected to the same ISP signal & company using NanoStation 5 from ubnt. As you know the connections work separately by default! (I use Windows 7 64bit) Can I merge them to get double speed (download/upload simultaneously) using regedit or special software or any other method?   • How to send Ctrl+Alt+F1 to window (to switch terminal remotely, not locally)?

    when I press Ctrl+Alt+F{1..12}, it switches me to other virtual terminal. When I have VNC/rdesktop client (and there it is VMWare/Virtualbox with other Linux) I want to switch virtual terminal remotely, but just pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 switches things locally. VirtualBox/VMWare often provides special means to send Ctrl+Alt+Del, but not Ctrl+Alt+F1. (I already know that I can log in over ssh and chvt)

  • PowerPoint Paste HTML Loss of Color

    I am trying to paste HTML into powerpoint 2007. Everything works ok except that I lose the color of the text and the font. I am using the paste special method selecting html. Now I have read that some people have fixed the color loss problem by setting a color printer as their default. But that does not seem to be working for me nor would it fix the font.     When viewing a particular text file in vim or less on Linux or OS X, all the en dashes show up as highlighted "<97" characters. What control-sequence do I need to type in order to substitute the hyphens back? For example, the following doesn't work in vim: % s/<97>/--/g Typing bracket nine seven bracket is not the same as typing the actual special character.

I would like to run the computer as a box that boots, displays no bios or boot information, then moves immediately to run one program full-screen without allowing the user to interact. It seems like there should be some base configurations that allow this or a special version of Windows that is configured to minimize extraneous display and control.

    I need to rewrite a URL that contains one or more strings of characters incling a % character (for instance %123) into another string of characters including a % character (for instance %234). I am able to do this using the special THE_REQUEST attribute with something like this: RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /(.*)\%123(.*)\ HTTP RewriteRule .* /%1\%234%2 [R,NE] However, this does not work for URLs that contain more than one "%123" strings... The N option has no efect as it seems that the value of THE_REQUEST is not changed. Any ideas?

    Is there any (possibly free or open-source) virtual WDM audio driver for Windows, with additional processing plugins, which would add one more layer between windows applications and actual sound card's WDM audio driver, allowing to: Add software DSPs to general audio output. I would like to be able to use custom effects, like compressor, or stereophonic-to-binaural converter for listening online's streaming media on headphones, etc. Connect its output to some custom buffer instead of the sound card. For example, to be able to record audio, or to send audio via wireless connection to some other wireless source? Virtual audio driver was just my idea how to solve these issues - if you know other way, please share your knowledge. I need this for Windows 7 and/or Windows XP.

  • Win7 glass-like Aero feature - unable to enable

    I have a 4 months old PC with Win7 Home Premium x64. Windows Experience Index is 5.4. Intel i5 processor 6GB memory nVidia GT220 video card. During games, Windows reported shortage of system resources, so switched the desktop back to "Windows 7 Basic" desktop theme. After game-over, I could switch back to the normal theme and enjoy all Aero eye-candies. However, lately the glass-like window transparency feature got disabled, and I found no ways to enable it again. There is a Troubleshouting option in Control Panel saying: "Find and fix problems with transparency and other visual effects". If I launch that, it does not find anything. Event viewer is full with the following warnings: The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention. Scenario : The Desktop Window Manager responsiveness has degraded. Taskbar, window borders, etc, none of the other transparent features work, and I cannot turn them on. Any thoughts?

  • Will increasing RAM improve Lightroom 3 large tiff loading times

    Set up: mid 2009 17" unibody MacBook Pro 4GB RAM 2.66 Core 2 Duo Snow Leopard 10.6.6 Lightroom 3 When working with 12 MegaPixel RAW files from a Nikon D700, no problem. Lightroom is fine. Recently I've been scanning film and they result in large tiff files, about 130mb each. The tiff files themselves are good, and I'm happy with my scanning workflow. Working with these files in Lightroom is perfectly fine, except for one step. When I choose one of these photos in the Develop module, Lightroom displays the "Loading" on the image for about a minute or two, which is quite long. Once the image is loaded, then everything is fine again, and applying effects is instant. So my only issue is reducing that "loading" time in the develop module (the library module is fine too). Will increasing my RAM to 8GB help? I'm worried about spending the money and it not making any difference. thanks andy

  • Slab uses 88Gb of 128Gb available. What could cause this?

    We run a debian 2.6.26-2-amd64 x86_64 GNU/Linux on a server with 128 Gb. Recently it our available memory became rather low. Looking at the /proc/meminfo showed that the Slab was using 88Gb, which is counted in the used memory off course. Is this a problem? I suspect that memory will be freed when necessary, but I don't know if that could have unwanted side effects. Why would Slab need that much memory? Is there a clear cause for that? can we avoid this to happen in the future?   • Windows 7 Audio tracks messed up

    I'm not an audio guy so it might not be the most articulate description of the problem I'm having but it seems like ever since I went to Windows 7 some video (netflix and some youtube) the background track (music sound effects etc) plays appropriately but the foreground track (i.e. the actors and/or narrator) barely comes in at all Right now I have just a simple set of PC speakers and some times a pair of headphones that plug into the PC speakers (no fancy 5.1) I've looked at every setting I can think of but I can't find anything that could be causing this Ive uninstalled the driver and reinstalled and I still get the same results so I think its a software issue any ideas?

    Using Apache, I'd like to be able to start and stop a service on the same server. Essentially, I'm looking for a way to allow Apache (or some script called by Apache) to call sudo service XXXX start. I realize there are severe security implications with this, and I'm looking to minimize the possible effects. There is only a single service that I need to do this for. I've seen some solutions that involve "hacking" the setuid (C/Perl wrapper), others involved editing the /etc/sudoers file. Is there a better way? many thanks, S.

  • Server 2008 R2 How to Change Windows 7 Basic Theme Color

    We're deploying thin clients connecting to a terminal server farm. The computers have high visibility to the public and I would like them to at least look presentable and not like something out of 1995. So I installed the Desktop Experience feature and enabled the Theme service. The server will not support Aero because it has no 3D graphics, but we can enable the Windows 7 Basic theme, which has the Aero look without the 3D effects. The problem with that theme is that you can select any window color you want, as long as it's baby boy blue. Is there a way to make those windows another color? The window color controls do nothing.
