• I studied electrical engineering. Can I work as a developer? [closed]

  A while ago I finished my Msc in Electrical Engineering and started working as an engineering consultant where I mostly do development work. I am good at picking up languages/technologies tools. I have fiddled with C/C++/C#/perl/ant/bash/html/css etc. Although I have never had a complain for my work, rather the contrary, I just feel that some day, someone will ask me a real hard task which would maybe seem rather trivial for a computer scientist but hard for me. Should I read/do something to become a better developer. Should I pick up a book about design patterns or algorithms for example? Is this normal that I have this kind of "fear"? Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this question. Please notify me so I can close it if this is the case.

• Is there a sequence to read through the Android Developer Site for a user new to Android?

  I keep seeing that I don't need to buy an android development book, that I should just read the Android Developer Site site because it has everything I need to know. I see it more as drinking from a fire hose. But I'm one of those people who likes to be walked thru the basics. I like to build up my knowledge, rather than being dropped into reference documentation. I also like to make sure I have see all/most of the topics covered. I'd hate to develop the wrong thing because I don't know about Fragments, Content Providers, or whatever. So, since it's a great resource, better than any book (we don't need no stinkin books), how do I traverse the site to get the information provide in the same way as a book would lay it out?

• Hard Copies VS Soft Copies

  Where do you draw the line and say, "OK, I'm actually going to print out this piece of code, spec, formula, or other info and carry it around but these pieces can stay on disk." Well, more importantly why do you draw the line there? I've encountered this a number of times and have some sort of vague conceptions beyond "oh now I'm REALLY stuck, better print this out." I've also found some quicksheets of basic specs to be handy. Really though, I have no particular logic behind what is useful to physically have available in the design and development process. I have a great pile of 'stuff' papers that seemed at least partially relevant at the time, but I only really use about a third of them ever and often end up wishing I had different info on hand. Edit: So this is what I'm hearing in a nutshell: Major parts of the design pattern Common, fairly static and prominently useful code (reference or specs) Some representation of data useful in collaborating or sharing with team Extreme cases of tough problem solving Overwhelmingly,almost never print anything.

• What types of programming require practical category theory?

  Category theory has applications in theoretical computer science and obviously is central to abstract mathematics. I have heard that it also has direct practical applications in programming and software development. What type of programming is practical category theory necessary for? What do programmers use category theory to accomplish? Please note my use of "necessary" and "require" in this post. I realize that in some sense most programmers will benefit from having experience in different types of theories, but I am looking for direct applications where the usage of category theory is essential, i.e. if you didn't know category theory, you probably couldn't do it. Also, I'd like to clarify that by "what type of programming," I am hoping less for a broad answer like "functional programming," and more for specific applications like "writing bank software" or "making operating systems."

• Working on a virtual machine as a developer

  In the company I'm currently working in, they decided that each developer will move to a VM desktop (Citrix/WinServer2012) an develop/test from there with restricted/no rights to install new software. The Server we will be working on are in a remote Datacenter. So i.e. if for some reason or another the internet brake down, we can't work till the connection is up again. As a developer I don't want to use windows as OS for my working/development environment as there is no need because we don't develop OS specific software. What good points could I raise in an argumentation against moving to the VMs beside the loss/restriction of freedom and the loss of connection to the internet?

• How much should I charge for a web app

  I am a freelance web developer and I am working on a PHP/MySQL/Javascript based project. It's a web app that uses a custom CMS with user types, followers system, search forms, blogs, social integration. It will take about 3 months to finish, according to a roadmap I make (based on current development stage) and about a month after that for bug fixing and testing. So I have to tell them a price. • 'Situations gone wrong' for web apps...

  Hi all I know there's some decent material floating around relating to more specific areas, but wanted to get some opinions from people who have had bad experiences in the past. I have a project where I can have a say on the design of a B2C web app, which has some external API interfaces. UX is crucial as is speed. Not sure what technology will be used at this stage. In designing this application, I want to make sure obvious features are not left out (i.e. ones that make maintenance/development easier). So can you guys tell me about 'situations gone wrong' that could have been avoided had more consideration taken place?   So we consider a server app development - heavily loaded with messing with big data streams.An app will be running on one powerful server. a server app shall be developed in form of crossplatform application - so to work on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. So same code many platforms for standing alone server architecture. We wonder what benefits does distributing applications not only over threads but over processes as wall would bring to programmers and to server end users and why? • Suggestions for Future or On-The-Edge Languages (2011)

  I'm just looking for some suggestions on newer languages and language implementations that are useful for string manipulation. It's now 2011 and a lot has changed over the years. Most of my work includes web development (which is mostly text-based) and command line scripting. I'm pretty language agnostic, although I've felt violated using PHP over the years. My only requirements are that the language be good at text manipulation, without a lot of 3rd party libraries (core libraries are okay, though), and that the language and/or standard implementation is very up to date or even "futuristic". For example, the two main languages I'm looking at right now are Python (Version 3.x) or Perl (Version 6.x). Research, Academic, and Experimental languages are okay with me. I don't mind functional languages although I'd like to have the option of programming in a procedural or even object oriented manner. Thanks!

• How do I get a get the left pane of my GUI app to talk to the right pane?

  I need help on developing a UI for a app. Basically this app will have do panels, left and right, lets say. On the left panel will be displayed customers and when I click on the customer name on the right will appear tabs with information, some kind of form with name, email, picture, etc. I already developed the left panel with DictionaryGrid which I could found on tutorials and so on, but no idea on the right panel which is the form side. • Is there a good tutorial/book for creating a quiz app for iOS 5? [closed]

  I am new to iOS development and looking to create a quiz application which will be for ipad, iphone and itouch. It will ask a question, text based, and have four possible answers. After you select an answer, the system tells you if you are right or wrong and provides an explanation. It provides the percentage of correct answers. • It's hard to judge your own product. Is there a name for this issue?

  I was just talking to my partner about how hard it is to personally judge how good your product is after a while because you use it so often. You literally spend hours on your computer doing nothing but work on this Consumer Facing application, and you start to feel a little fatigue of using it over and over and over, at least a hundred times a day. You get scared this fatigue may mean the product you are building may have the same effect on the users and might mean you are doing something wrong. Is there a name for this in product development? For the fact that as a designer+ programmer+everything else, your product might not suck as much as you think simply because you spend way too much time with it, or a variation of this?

• Is programming as a profession in a race to the bottom?

  It seems to me that the programming industry is in a race to the bottom. If we take the practices of: Not taking time to implement best practices Using other's people code as much as possible (custom code as a liability) Using increasingly higher level languages to improve productivity GUI based development "tools" that greatly simplify "programming" and do not require people to understand the plumbing behind the code These things imply to me that we are in a race to becoming like any other office worker. It is in the employer's interest for things to not require skill (easier to replace), for things to be prebuilt (less project time). My point here is that a) is there a misalignment between skill and the economic interests of the employer? and b) if there is, how do you mitigate it to enforce professional standards?

  I have begun doing a lot of javascript development recently, mostly front-end but also using node.js. As I am currently in the transition from large company to startup, they expect me as a front end developer to know how to produce semi decent designs (Which I cannot) I am looking for a book (or set of screencasts) to give me some good well rounded advice on design. I know CSS, but my design are always awful looking, I also know nothing about Photoshop (and am on Linux and have no access to it) What are your picks? I have learned Hadoop basics on my own and I am pretty comfortable with writing MapReduce Jobs, PIG, HIVE, Flume and other related projects. I am thinking of taking the exam for the Cloudera Hadoop Certification. Will this certification add value, considering that I have less than 1 year of experience? Many of the jobs I've seen relating to Hadoop require at least 3 years of experience. Should I invest more time in learning Hadoop and improving my skills to take this certification?

So here goes: Can an entry level software engineer directly get a job in a security engineering position? I am a graduate student in software engineering with a lot of course work in security as well, including web application, network and mobile security. • What web oriented language would work best with binary data?

  I want to create a service where people can upload files. However, since file storage costs money, I want to compress the files so they take less space. I would want to write my own compression algorithm, however, PHP doesn't have good ways to handle binary data (which is needed for many compression algorithms). So I wondered, what would be a better language to create such a website in? • Advice on how to understand in general and in practice IT Infrastructure

  My IT knowledge resides mainly in SW development. I have just some basic know how about networks. On the net I tried to get information and read books in order to better understand the overall IT infrastrcuture, but all the sources I found are too generic or, mainly, too detailed in just one aspect, making me lost. Could anyone suggest some books or web resources as good compromise in details? My goal would be able to understand the network issues and security threats when, for example, two remote system have to be setup and put in connection each other. Considering this scenario there are several aspects to consider: firewalls, intranet/internet interconnections, certificates for httpS, etc. The argument is quite wide, therefore I was looking for something that might help to start to understand this subject without going too deep in details (Computer Networks from A.Tanenbaum is a wonderful milestone, but way too specific for my scope). • What can I use to set up a 100% cloud based python IDE + Hosting environment?

  I'm working a side project and I can't always be on "my" machine to code/deploy the web application. I am aware of various cloud IDEs (e.g., Cloud 9 IDE) and independent Django/Flask etc., hosting services (e.g., Heroku). What is the best way to completely shift my development/deployment environment to the cloud so that I can code/deploy from anywhere? I don't mind using paid services but I'm not sure which cloud IDEs play nice with which hosting services. Has anyone tried this setup before? What has or hasn't worked? I want to minimize the manual intervention in 'connecting the two services' as much as possible. I'm going to be using Django, MySQL and Redis for the web-app
