  • Proper way to validate model in ASP.NET MVC 2 and ViewModel apporach

    I am writing an ASP.NET MVC 2 application using NHibernate and repository pattern. I have an assembly that contains my model (business entities), moreover in my web project I want to use flattened objects (possibly with additional properties/logic) as ViewModels. These VMs contain UI-specific metadata (eg. DisplayAttribute used by Html.LabelFor() method). The problem is that I don't know how to implement validation so that I don't repeat myself throughout various tiers (specifically validation rules are written once in Model and propagated to ViewModel). I am using DataAnnotations on my ViewModel but this means no validation rules are imposed on the Model itself. One approach I am considering is deriving ViewModel objects from business entities adding new properties/overriding old ones, thus preserving validation metadata between the two however this is an ugly workaround. I have seen Automapper project which helps to map properties, but I am not sure if it can handle ASP.NET MVC 2 validation metadata properly. Is it difficult to use custom validation framework in asp.net mvc 2? Do you have any patterns that help to preserve DRY in regard to validation?

  • Aspect-Oriented Programming in OOP world - breaking rules ?

    Hi 2 all! When I worked on asp.net mvc web site project, I investigated different approaches for validation. Some of them were DataAnotation validation and Validation Block. They use attributes for setting up rules for validation. Like this: [Required] public string Name {get;set;} I was confused how this approach combines with SRP (single responsibilty principle) from OOP world. Also I don't like any business logic in business objects, I prefer "poor business objects" model, but when I decorate my business objects with validation attributes for real requirements, they become ugly (Has a lot of attributes / with localization logic and so on). Idea with attributes realy simple, but in my opinion the validation decoration should be separated from object. I'm not sure is the approach to separate validation rules to xml files or to another objects, maybe it is a solution. Another bad side of AOP - problems with unit testin such code. When I decorated some controller actions with custom attributes for example to import/export TempData between actions or initialize some required services I can't to write proper unit test for testing this actions. Do you think that attributes don't break srp or you just disregard this and think that it's simplest , is not worst way ? P.S. I read some likes articles and discussions and I just want to put things in proper order. P.P.S. sorry for my "fluent" english :=)

    I was wondering is there anyway to change the namespace prefix for the WCF SOAP request? As you can see in the example below, The Envelope has namespace "http://www.w3.org/2005/08/addressing" with prefix 'a'. I want to change this to 'foo'. How can I do that.     I have a map in BizTalk 2009 that is converting some data into an XML document to be sent on to another system. The target schema includes some elements with xml:lang attributes. BizTalk generates those as ns1:lang. The target system requires that the prefix xml be used.   • SVG <image> doesn't work in <defs> on Chrome

    I want to use image in a group definded in defs tag. But on Chrome nothing works. In Firefox only the .png file is displayd. Only Rectangle apears but with strange bug in Chrome.     I need to sign my soap request to a 3rd party. The provided an example what the call should look like. And I am trying, rather unsuccessfully to make this call with wcf. I need to make a wcf soap call where the header contains BinarySecurityToken, Signature, and SecurityTokenReference.   • WordPress not resizing images with Nginx + php-fpm and other issues

    Recently i setup a Ubuntu 12.04 VPS with 512mb/1ghz CPU, Nginx + php-fpm + Varnish + APC + Percona's MySQL server + CloudFlare Pro for our Ubuntu LoCo Team's WordPress blog. The blog get about 3~4k daily hits, use about 180MB and 8~20% CPU. Everything seems to be working insanely fast... page load is really good and is about 16x faster than any of our competitors... but there is one problem. When we upload a image, WordPress don't resize it, so all we can do it insert the full image in the post. If the imagem have, let's say, 30kb, it resize fine... but if the image have 100kb+, it won't... In nginx error logs i see this: upstream timed out (110: Connection timed out) while reading response header from upstream, client: 150.162.216.64, server: www.ubuntubrsc.com, request: "POST /wp-admin/async-upload.php HTTP/1.1", upstream: "fastcgi://unix:/var/run/php5-fpm.sock:", host: "www.ubuntubrsc.com", referrer: "http://www.ubuntubrsc.com/wp-admin/media-upload.php?post_id=2668&" It seems to be related with the issue, but i dunno.   • Instance validation error: '2' is not a valid value for QueryType. (web service)

    I have a web service that I am passing an enum public enum QueryType { Inquiry = 1 Maintainence = 2 } When I pass an object that has a Parameter of QueryType on it, I get the error back from the web service saying that '2' is not a valid value for QueryType, when you can clearly see from the declaration of the enum that it is. I cannot change the values of the enum because legacy applications use the values, but I would rather not have to insert a "default" value just to push the index of the enum to make it work with my web service. It acts like the web service is using the index of the values rather than the values themselves. Does anybody have a suggestion of what I can do to make it work, is there something I can change in my WSDL?

I have been told time and time again to check if form input is a number if you are expecting a number or escape it in case (unless you use proper mysqli formatting) to avoid injection. 1.After the safety checks are done, should I do additional logic checks? For example, if the user is sending a friend request to them-self for example even if my user interface will not show the form if the user is looking at their own page.

  • How to ignore/prevent javadoc folder from validation during Eclipse Build?

    In my war is a huge javadoc folder. There is no point in validating it since javadocs are produced by Sun(Oracle) javadoc utility. I have forgotten how I did it the last time. I need to tell Eclipse build not to validate that particular folder. Reasons why I need it: 1. the html produced by Sun javadoc generation utility does not meet the requirement that Eclipse uses - there is a bug report in Eclipse but Eclipse responds that Sun javadoc generator non-compliance is not their fault and that Eclipse intends to stick to their strict compliance. Which results in lots of html errors listed in the problems tab. 2. the javadoc folder is a remote link and high activity on that link is using up my cpu resource, and because it is a link to a remote location, that cpu high activity is sustained for long time until it finishes scanning the whole 35MB javadocs. Thanks - need help.

  • How to avoid piracy in iPhone apps by server side validation?

    As par my app requirement, there is a couple of scenarios that I need to handle. Scenario 1: To avoid piracy, I want to include some piece of code, whose job is sending both IMEI and Serial number of IPhone. Scenario 2: At server side, I've a database, which has a list of both IMEI and Serial No info. Here I wanna validate both IMEI and Serial numbers. If both are not matched then I can make sure that the app is pirated. Idea seems good. But I don't know how to handle these two scenarios in my app. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Asp MVC - "The Id field is required" validation message on Create; Id not set to [Required]

    This is happening when I try to create the entity using a Create style action in Asp.Net MVC 2. The POCO has the following properties: public int Id {get;set;} [Required] public string Message {get; set} On the creation of the entity, the Id is set automatically, so there is no need for it on the Create action. The ModelState says that "The Id field is required", but I haven't set that to be so. Is there something automatic going on here? EDIT - Reason Revealed The reason for the issue is answered by Brad Wilson via Paul Speranza in one of the comments below where he says (cheers Paul): You're providing a value for ID, you just didn't know you were. It's in the route data of the default route ("{controller}/{action}/{id}"), and its default value is the empty string, which isn't valid for an int. Use the [Bind] attribute on your action parameter to exclude ID. My default route was: new { controller = "Customer", action = "Edit", id = " " } // Parameter defaults EDIT - Update Model technique I actually changed the way I did this again by using TryUpdateModel and the exclude parameter array asscoiated with that.   • align WMD editor's preview HTML with server-side HTML validation (e.g. no embedded javascript)

    There are many SO questions (e.g. here and here) about how to do server-side scrubbing of Markdown produced by the WMD editor to ensure the HTML generated doesn't contain malicious script, like this: <img onload="alert('haha');" src="http://www.google.com/intl/en_ALL/images/srpr/logo1w.png" /> This doesn't affect the WMD client's preview box. I doubt this is a big deal since if you're scrubbing the HTML on the server, an attacker can't save the bad HTML so no one else will be able to see it later and have their cookies stolen or sessions hijacked by the bad script. But it's still kinda odd to allow an attacker to run any script in the context of your site, and it's probably a bad idea to allow the client preview window to allow different HTML than your server will allow. StackOverflow has clearly plugged this hole. How did they do it? [NOTE: I already figured this out but it required some tricky javascript debugging, so I'm answering my own question here to help others who may want to do ths same thing]
