  • Linux: cat /dev/video0 TS into some kind of ring puffer

    I want to cat a /dev/video0 device output (Transport Stream) into a temporary ring buffer. In fact i do not want that the file is growing over the time. Simultaneously access is not possible. So the purpose is to have a file (buffer, Fifo, whatever) to be accessed by more than one consumer (example: tail -f, mencoder, VLC, ....). Some kind of scenario: 1# cat /dev/video0 > mybuffer.ts And then multiple access 2# tail -f mybuffer.ts > extract1.ts 2# tail -f mybuffer.ts > extract2.ts 3# ffmpeg ... Does someone have an idea how to do something like this?

  • Going from dev to sysadmin advice [on hold]

    I've seen the threads on here about transitions to/from sysadmin. My story is I am a dev (technology is irrelevant), but in learning that technology it required a lot of server infrastructure. In the last few years, I thus had to setup a lot of infrastructure (AD, DNS, SQL etc) to learn said technology. I've noticed that I've enjoyed doing sysadmin and got quite good at it, and find it even engrossing (e.g. I am amazed by how decievingly complicated AD is, under the hood). I'm now thinking of moving into IT infrastructure after about 4 years in various dev (.NET) roles. Any advice? My concern is that I don't have any experience with hardware load balancers and firewalls like F5 etc, which some jobs require. How could I compensate for that? Also, I'm rubbish with my hands, would this be a factor? (i.e. maintaining physical kit)? Thanks

  • How to find the /dev name of my USB device

    I am running Ubuntu 11 on VmWare on Windows XP. I want to format an SD card in Ubuntu. But, I can't figure out which /dev/xxx device the SD card is. I plug the card into the built-in socket of my laptop. I "safely remove" the device in Windows. Then, I "connect" the PCMCIA reader in VmWare. Now, I was supposing to see a new device like /dev/sdx. But, it doesn't appear :( How can I find what the name of my USB device's name and mount it? /var/log/message is empty.   • Darik's Boot And Nuke - ERROR /dev/sda

    I'm trying to wipe the drive of an old company computer with DBAN so I can install Redhat Enterprise and learn Linux (it's a Dell Inspiron 1210, if that matters). I burnt DBAN to a CD and boot from that CD (running on an external USB CD drive). Whenever I try to run the utility--whether it's Autonuke, or any of manual wiping methods-- it spits on the errors: ERROR /dev/sdb ERROR /dev/sda From what I've read on some other forums, there are some issues with other drives or removable media interfering however I've disabled all other drives in bios, leaving just CD/DVD and the Hard Disk but still no luck. Any advice on how I can reconcile these errors and wipe the disk?

    I am connecting a USB to serial driver port to my system and I get about halfway to where I need to go. PL2303 Serial Port Bus 2 Device 1: ID 0000:0000 Bus 1 Device 1: ID 0000:0000 I get a series of usbdev2.4 (usbdev2.4, usbdev2.4_ep00, etc) devices in dev but no ttyUSB0 or anything that I can open with minicom.     I am using Ubuntu 11.04 and attached a Garmin data cable. The device gets recognized [17718.502138] USB Serial support registered for pl2303 [17718.502181] pl2303 2-1:1.0: pl2303 converter detected [17718.513416] usb 2-1: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0 [17718.513443] usbcore: registered new interface driver pl2303 [17718.513446] pl2303: Prolific PL2303 USB to serial adaptor driver ... but when I do a strace cat /dev/ttyUSB0 it hangs on the open part and does not continue any more open("/dev/ttyUSB0", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILEC If I do the same on Ubuntu 12.04 it stops on fread(" ... ") which is okay, as there is currently no data comming in at this port. I am not sure if it is just a different configuration of the system or an driver related problem. How can I track this down further? Unfortunately I can not update the old Ubuntu 11.04 system for different reasons at the moment.

  • Virtual hosts and subdomains, need configuring on live, not on dev

    I have a query about subdomains and virtual hosts. On my dev server, I ca nset up a new virtual hosts and point it to a subdomain, ie: newdomain.mydevserver.com All is fine and I can access 'newdomain/mydevserver/com' I can also do 'host newdomain.mydevserver.com' However, when I do the same with my main server I get the server couldn't be contacted error - I'm guessing that's because i need a cname or a record for the DNS. My question is, why does it seem that i can create subdomains on my dev but not on my live server? Help appreciated, many thanks!

    I am trying to set up a ZFS pool using 4 bare drives which I have attached to my Ubuntu system via a SATA hot swap backplane. These are Hitachi SATA drives. The serial number for the first one, for example, is YNG0ZJ7C. Why are there two entries here for each drive? More to the point, when I create my ZFS pool which one should I use; the scsi- one or the ata- one?

  • How do I redirect my website from non-www to WWW using Apache2?

    I'm currently trying to set up my personal webpage. I am using a VPS and have manually installed Wordpress, and everything seems to work... except if I go to the non-www version of my website, it comes up with a page not found. www.andrewrockefeller.com <-- Works andrewrockefeller.com <-- Does not (and I want to redirect it to www.andrewrockefeller.com) I have tried adding RewriteEngine functionality to my .htaccess, and that isn't working. I have also tried adding the 'most-voted' method of adding to my default file (which apache2.conf pulls from: <VirtualHost *> ServerName andrewrockefeller.com Redirect 301 / http://www.andrewrockefeller.com/ </VirtualHost> Seeing how many people are able to get the above working, is there something else I may be missing to allow that to function?   • HTTP request hangs for for exactly 150 seconds, then gives incomplete response. How do I find out wh

    I am hosting a Wordpress blog, and having a strange problem. When I connect to the server (http://71.65.199.125/ at the time of this writing) it displays the Title correctly, and half of a download bar, indicating it has received some of the page, then it hangs for exactly 150 seconds (timed it twice), then it sends the rest of the page, but without the stylesheet. after that it hangs indefinitely, continuing to say "connecting..." without making any progress. If you have any clues as to what might be happening, or how I could print debug logs of PHP or something to see what it is looking for during that hang time that would probably help. recent changed I have made: switched wordpress themes, however I did see it work once with the new theme. moved the server to another building, with an identical ISP, and linksys router forwarding setup. I have also added a favicon.gif file to /var/www but without linking to it from any of the wordpress pages. I have also had a unanticipated power interruption. System info: Ubuntu debian 9.04 Apache2 PHP 5 Wordpress 2.9.2 Thank you

  • Browser detection Plugin?

    Hi I have a website that I made and I am planning to redo it. The current version of the site used a jquery callout plugin that did not fully work in IE6. This got me thinking about browser detection. At first I was just going to put the supported browsers on the home page but then today on Digg I saw some post about some jquery plugins and wordpress and in the article there was a plugin for detecting IE. So I started to look around for some browser detection plugins. I found a few of them but they where over the top like this one sevenup Its nice but it makes a huge popup and tells them to update. This one is better then another one I found where they basically forced the user to update or they could not continue on the site. So I found this one jquery plugin This one is pretty nice since it looks at the major browsers and does detection on them too expect for chrome which I noticed triggers and an outdated browser with this plugin. So I started to look at the jquery documentation to see if they had a browser detection for chrome this is when I saw that they "Deprecated" and now recommend "Support". So now I am just confused like "Support" seems to be good and I read many posts on this site saying you should use it. But then it does not support stuff like .png detection that might have been useful to me since of that plugin(however I probably will not be using the plugin anymore since I think the author just gave up on it). Plus I don't know if this is something I am looking for at this time. Like I am guessing with "Support" you use it to detect something that is not supported and then do some alternative thing for that browser? For me I am more looking for something to tell the user "Hey look I tested this browser in the these versions of Firefox(3.5+), IE(8+), Opera(9.5+),Chrome(Something), Safari(Something). If your not using these versions you may not being seeing the site how it was intended" Of course I would try to have something shorter then that message but that the gyst. I am also assuming that the site would work in future versions of these browsers. I still check to see if my site works(they usually do) and is half decent in IE 6 but I won't spend hours fixing stuff that might be off in older browsers like IE 6. I won't test my site in older version of other browsers like firefox since I would think the user have to the sense to update so no point testing firefox 2.0 or whatever. So is there a plugin that fits this description? Or can "Support" do what I want? Thanks
