    - by Steven

  • Which style is preferable when writing this boolean expression?

    - by Jeppe Stig Nielsen
I know this question is to some degree a matter of taste. I admit this is not something I don't understand, it's just something I want to hear others' opinion about. I need to write a method that takes two arguments, a boolean and a string. The boolean is in a sense (which will be obvious shortly) redundant, but it is part of a specification that the method must take in both arguments, and must raise an exception with a specific message text if the boolean has the "wrong" value. The bool must be true if and only if the string is not null or empty. So here are some different styles to write (hopefully!) the same thing. Which one do you find is the most readable, and compliant with good coding practice? // option A: Use two if, repeat throw statement and duplication of message string public void SomeMethod(bool useName, string name) { if (useName && string.IsNullOrEmpty(name)) throw new SomeException("..."); if (!useName && !string.IsNullOrEmpty(name)) throw new SomeException("..."); // rest of method } // option B: Long expression but using only && and || public void SomeMethod(bool useName, string name) { if (useName && string.IsNullOrEmpty(name) || !useName && !string.IsNullOrEmpty(name)) throw new SomeException("..."); // rest of method } // option C: With == operator between booleans public void SomeMethod(bool useName, string name) { if (useName == string.IsNullOrEmpty(name)) throw new SomeException("..."); // rest of method } // option D1: With XOR operator public void SomeMethod(bool useName, string name) { if (!(useName ^ string.IsNullOrEmpty(name))) throw new SomeException("..."); // rest of method } // option D2: With XOR operator public void SomeMethod(bool useName, string name) { if (useName ^ !string.IsNullOrEmpty(name)) throw new SomeException("..."); // rest of method } Of course you're welcome to suggest other possibilities too. Message text "..." would be something like "If 'useName' is true a name must be given, and if 'useName' is false no name is allowed".

  • Xpath expression to retrieve oldest/earliest node

    - by gkrogers
I have an XML snippet, so: <STATES> <STATE> <NAME>Alabama</NAME> <ABBREVIATION>AL</ABBREVIATION> <CAPITAL>Montgomery</CAPITAL> <POPULATION>4661900</POPULATION> <AREA>52419</AREA> <DATEOFSTATEHOOD>14 December 1819</DATEOFSTATEHOOD> </STATE> <STATE> <NAME>Alaska</NAME> <ABBREVIATION>AK</ABBREVIATION> <CAPITAL>Juneau</CAPITAL> <POPULATION>698473</POPULATION> <AREA>663268</AREA> <DATEOFSTATEHOOD>1 January 1959</DATEOFSTATEHOOD> </STATE> <STATE> <NAME>Delaware</NAME> <ABBREVIATION>DE</ABBREVIATION> <CAPITAL>Dover</CAPITAL> <POPULATION>885122</POPULATION> <AREA>2490</AREA> <DATEOFSTATEHOOD>7 December 1787</DATEOFSTATEHOOD> </STATE> </STATES> <etc, etc.> I want to retrieve (for example) the capital of the oldest state (i.e. "Dover"). I have managed to get this far: //STATES/STATE[DATEOFSTATEHOOD='7 December 1787']/CAPITAL/text() but can't figure out how to say 'DATEOFSTATEHOOD={the earliest DATEOFSTATEHOOD}'. Can anybody point me in the right direction, please? SOLUTION: Matt's solution is more or less spot on. I had to reformat the dates (I used YYYYMMDDD) because, as was pointed out, Xpath 1.0 doesn't support the date format I was using. Also, Microsoft's XML library (4.0 and 6.0) returned the whole node list with Matt's expression. Reversing the test fixed that problem, making it return just the earliest node. So: //STATES/STATE[(DATEOFSTATEHOOD < //STATES/STATE/DATEOFSTATEHOOD)]/CAPITAL/text()

  • Floated DIVs not flowing properly

    - by NightMICU
    Hi everyone, I am working on a photo gallery, each thumbnail is in its own DIV and floated to the left in a containing DIV. It has been displaying properly up until vertical thumbnails entered the equation. Now, when the next row should start, the first item of the following row is to the left of the last vertical DIV (thumbnail), rather than flush to the left of the containing DIV. Here is the CSS: #galleryBox { width: 650px; background: #fff; margin: auto; padding: 10px; text-align: center; overflow: auto; } .item { display: block; margin: 10px; padding: 20px 5px 5px 5px; float: left; background: url('/images/content_bottom.png') repeat-x scroll bottom #828282; } and the HTML: <div id="galleryBox" class="ui-corner-all"> <div id="file" class="ui-corner-all"> <form name="uploadPhoto" id="uploadPhoto" method="post" action="" enctype="multipart/form-data"> <p><label for="photo">Photo:</label><input type="file" name="photo" id="photo"/></p> <p><label for="caption">Caption: <small>Optional</small></label><input type="text" id="caption" name="caption"/></p> <p align="center"><input type="submit" value="Upload" name="send" id="send" class="addButton ui-state-default ui-corner-all"/></p> </form> <a name="thumbs"></a> </div> <div class="item ui-corner-all"> <a href="http://tapp-essexvfd.org/gallery/photos/201004211802.jpg" class="lightbox" title="test1"> <img src="http://tapp-essexvfd.org/gallery/photos/thumbs/201004211802_thumb.jpg" alt="test1"/></a><br/> <p><span class="label">test1</span></p> </div> <div class="item ui-corner-all"> <a href="http://tapp-essexvfd.org/gallery/photos/201004211803.jpg" class="lightbox" title="test3"> <img src="http://tapp-essexvfd.org/gallery/photos/thumbs/201004211803_thumb.jpg" alt="test3"/></a><br/> <p><span class="label">test3</span></p> </div> </div>

  • Easiest way to recursively find and replace?

    - by FarmBoy
I want to recursively search through a directory of text files and replace every occurrence of foo within the files with bar. What is the easiest way to accomplish this? I imagine that grep would do the job in one line, but I can't seem to find an example of this. I'm working in OS X.

  • Win32: edit control selection in dialog-based app

    - by Lars Kanto
I have a dialog-based app with an edit-control in it. When I minimize / restore the app, everything's ok. But when I hide all the windows with holding down that Windows-logo-key and pressing "D" and then I restore the app, the edit-control selects everything inside it. How to make it not to select the text on restore?

  • How to set header and footer in print layout

    - by Miraaj
I have a very simple requirement: I want to show a header and footer in print layout of a view. One approach I can use is to manipulate the height of the page and display some text fields at appropriate positions as header and footer, but I think there must be smarter way to do this in cocoa. Can any one tell me- is there any default method to achieve this in cocoa or some smarter way to do this?

  • SWT Global Menu bar items listener

    - by vigilant
Is it possible to attach a listener to all MenuItems in a Menu bar after creating the entire menu bar? Otherwise I need to call addListener on each MenuItem individually, which is a pain with hundreds of menu items (don't ask why). With a listener attached to each MenuItem, I would then be able to demultiplex using the text string of the MenuItem.

  • How to Load Dependent Files on Demand + Check if They're Loaded or Not?

    - by br4inwash3r
I'm trying to implement an assets/dependency loader that i've found from an old article at 24Ways.org. most of you might be familiar with it. it's from this article by Christian Heilmann: http://24ways.org/2007/keeping-javascript-dependencies-at-bay i've modified the script to load CSS files as well. and it's now quite close to what i want. but i still need to do some checking to see wether an asset have been completely loaded or not. just wondering if you guys have any ideas :) here's what my script currently looked like: var assetLoader = { assets: { products: { js: 'products.js', css: 'products.css', loaded: false }, articles: { js: 'articles.js', css: 'articles.css', loaded: false }, [...] cycle: { js: 'jquery.cycle.min.js', loaded: false }, swfobject: { js: 'jquery.swfobject.min.js', loaded: false } }, add: function(asset) { var comp = assetLoader.assets[asset]; var path = '/path/to/assets/'; if (comp && comp.loaded == false) { if (comp.js) { // load js var js = document.createElement('script'); js.src = path + 'js/' + comp.js; js.type = 'text/javascript'; js.charset = 'utf-8'; // append to document document.getElementsByTagName('body')[0].appendChild(js); } if (comp.css) { // load css var css = document.createElement('link'); css.rel = 'stylesheet'; css.href = path + 'css/' + comp.css; css.type = 'text/css'; css.media = 'screen, projection'; css.charset = 'utf-8'; // append to document document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(css); } } }, check: function(asset) { assetLoader.assets[asset].loaded = true; } } Christian explains this method in his article in great detail. I don't want to confuse you guys anymore with my bad english :P and here's an example of how i run the script: ... // load jquery cycle plugin if (page=='tvc' || page=='products') { if (!assetLoader.assets.cycle.loaded) { assetLoader.add('cycle'); } } // load products page assets if (!assetLoader.assets.products.loaded) { assetLoader.add('products'); } ... this kind of approach is very problematic though. coz assets loads asynchronously, which means some of the code inside products.js that depends on jquery.cycle.js might continue running before jquery.cycle.js is even loaded resulting in errors. while i'm quite aware that scripts can be attached with an onload event, i'm just not really sure how to implement it to my script. anyone care to help me? please... :P

  • loading javascript file after jquery.ready

    - by Spines
    I want to load a javascript file at the end of jquery.ready so that the code in my ready handler doesn't have to wait to execute until this large javascript file is loaded. My jquery.ready code doesn't rely on this javascript file at all. Would this be a good way to do that? $(function(){ ... ... $('head').append('<script type="text/javascript" src="/largejs.js"></script>'); });
