• OpenGL - Cascaded shadow mapping - Texture lookup

  I'm trying to implement cascaded shadow mapping in my engine, but I'm somewhat stuck at the last step. For testing purposes I've made sure all cascades encompass my entire scene. The result is currently this: The different intensity of the cascades is not on purpose, it's actually the problem. This is how I do the texture lookup for the shadow maps inside the fragment shader: layout(std140) uniform CSM { vec4 csmFard; // far distances for each cascade mat4 csmVP[4]; // View-Projection Matrix int numCascades; // Number of cascades to use. That explains the different intensity of the cascades, since I'm grabbing the depth value directly from the texture. • Upload to PPA succeeded but packages doesn't appear

  I'm trying to upload packages to my PPA for the first time. I want to use the PPA for customized versions of the OpenStack Compute (nova) project, so I tried to do a test by uploading packages corresponding to the bexar release of this project (lp:nova/bexar), with a new version number and changelog entry. I signed the source packages using my OpenGPG key, which has been uploaded to the ubuntu keyserver: $ dch -v 2011.1-0ubuntu2-isi1 -D lucid "ISI bexar build #1" $ dpkg-buildpackage -s -rfakeroot -tc -D -k4C8A14AB When I tried to upload the files to the repository, it seemed to work (real email obscured): $ dput ppa:lorinh/ppa nova_2011.2~bzr663-1isi1_source.changes Checking signature on .changes gpg: Signature made Fri 11 Feb 2011 03:52:50 PM EST using RSA key ID 4C8A14AB gpg: Good signature from "Lorin Hochstein <lorin@...>" Good signature on /home/lorin/packaging/nova_2011.2~bzr663-1isi1_source.changes. • What do you do when a client requires Rich Text Editing on their website?

  As we all know by now, XSS attacks are dangerous and really easy to pull off. Various frameworks make it easy to encode HTML, like ASP.NET MVC does: <%= Html.Encode("string"); %> But what happens when your client requires that they be able to upload their content directly from a Microsoft Word document? Here's the scenario: People can copy and paste content from Microsoft word into a WYSIWYG editor (in this case tinyMCE), and then that information is posted to a web page. The website is public, but only members of that organization will have access to post information to a webpage. What is the best way to handle this requirement? Currently there is no checking done on what the client posts (since only 'trusted' users can post), but I'm not particularly happy with that and would like to lock it down further in case an account is hacked. The platform in question is ASP.NET MVC. The only conceptual method that I'm aware of that meets these requirements is to whitelist HTML tags and let those pass through. Is there another way? If not, is the best way to let them store it in the Database in any form, but only display it properly encoded and stripped of bad tags? NB: The questions differ in that he only assumes there's one way. I'm also asking the following questions: 1. Is there a better way that doesn't rely on HTML Whitelists? 2. Is there a better way that relies on a different view engine? 3. Is there a WYSIWYG editor that includes the ability to whitelist on the fly? 4. Should I even worry about this since it will only be for 'private posting' (Much in the same way that a private blog allows HTML From the author, but since only he can post, it's not an issue)? Edit #2: If suggesting a WYSIWYG editor, it must be free (as in speech, or as in beer). Update: All of the suggestions thus far revolve around a specific Rich Text Editor to use: Only provide an editor as a suggestion if it allows for sanitization of HTML tags; and it fulfills the requirement of accepting pasted documents from a WYSIWYG Editor like Microsoft Word. There are three methods that I know of: 1. Not allow HTML. 2. Allow HTML, but sanitize it 3. Find a Rich Text Editor that sanitizes and allows HTML. The previous questions remain (1-4 above). • What is the most time-effective way to monitor & manage threats from bots and/or humans?

  I'm usually overwhelmed by the amount of tools that hosting companies provide to track & quantify traffic data and statistics. I'm equally overwhelmed by the countless flavors of malicious 'attacks' that target any and every web site known to man. The security methods used to protect both the back and front end of a website are documented well and are straight-forward in terms of ease of implementation and application, but the army of autonomous bots knows no boundaries and will always find a niche of a website to infest. So what can be done to handle the inevitable swarm of bots that pound your domain with brute force? Whenever I look at error logs for my domains, there are always thousands of entries that look like bots trying to sneak sql code into the database by tricking the variables in the url into giving them schema information or private data within the database. My barbaric and time-consuming plan of defense is just to monitor visitor statistics for those obvious patterns of abuse and either ban the ips or range of ips accordingly. Aside from that, I don't know much else I could do to prevent all of the ping pong going on all day. Are there any good tools that automatically monitor this background activity (specifically activity that throws errors on the web & db server) and proactively deal with these source(s) of mayhem?

• Explaining the difference between OData & RDF by way of analogy

  A couple of months back I wrote a blog post entitled Microsoft, OData and RDF where I gave a high level view of the OData protocol and how it compares to RDF. I talked about linked data, triples and such like which may have been somewhat useful however jargon-heavy. Earlier today Dr Michael Hausenblas (blog | twitter) offered an analogy which I think is probably more useful and with Michael's permission I'm re-posting it here:Imagine a Web (a Web of Documents, if you wish), which is not based on HTML and hyperlinks, but on MS Word documents. The documents are all available on the Internet, so you can download them and consume the content. But after you’re done with a certain document that talks about a book, how do you learn more about it? For example, reviews about the book or where you can purchase it? Maybe the original document mentions that there is some more related information on another server. So you’d need to go there and look for the related bit of information yourself. You see? That’s what the Web is great at – you just click on a hyperlink and it takes you to the document (or section) you’re interested in. All the legwork is taken care of for you through HTML, URIs and HTTP.Hm, right, but how is this related to OData? Well, OData feels a bit like the above mentioned scenario, just concerning data. • Improving SpriteBatch performance for tiles

  I realize this is a variation on what has got to be a common question, but after reading several (good answers) I'm no closer to a solution here. So here's my situation: I'm making a 2D game which has (among some other things) a tiled world, and so, drawing this world implies drawing a jillion tiles each frame (depending on resolution: it's roughly a 64x32 tile with some transparency). Now I want the user to be able to maximize the game (or fullscreen mode, actually, as its a bit more efficient) and instead of scaling textures (bleagh) this will just allow lots and lots of tiles to be shown at once. Which is great! But it turns out this makes upward of 2000 tiles on the screen each time, and this is framerate-limiting (I've commented out enough other parts of the game to make sure this is the bottleneck). It gets worse if I use multiple source rectangles on the same texture (I use a tilesheet; I believe changing textures entirely makes things worse), or if you tint the tiles, or whatever. So, the general question is this: What are some general methods for improving the drawing of thousands of repetitive sprites? Answers pertaining to XNA's SpriteBatch would be helpful but I'm equally happy with general theory. Also, any tricks pertaining to this situation in particular (drawing a tiled world efficiently) are also welcome. I really do want to draw all of them, though, and I need the SpriteMode.BackToFront to be active, because

• Changing ID3 tags of music in iTunes with read-only attributes

  When I add an mp3 file with read-only attributes to iTunes, iTunes does not allow me to change the file's ID3 tags or delete the file later. Removing the read-only attributes after adding the file doesn't help. If I go to the source file and delete it manually, it shows up as "missing file" with a ! sign prefixed to it in the program, and it still can't be deleted. How can I get around this? I just want to change the ID3 tags.

• Voxel Face Crawling (Mesh simplification, possibly using greedy)

  This is in regards to a Minecraft-like terrain engine. I store blocks in chunks (16x256x16 blocks in a chunk). When I generate a chunk, I use multiple procedural techniques to set the terrain and to place objects. While generating, I keep one 1D array for the full chunk (solid or not) and a separate 1D array of solid blocks. After generation, I iterate through the solid blocks checking their neighbors so I only generate block faces that don't have solid neighbors. I store which faces to generate in their own list (that's 6 lists, one per possible face). When rendering a chunk, I render all lists in the camera's current chunk and only the lists facing the camera in all other chunks. Using a 2D atlas with this little shader trick Andrew Russell suggested, I want to merge similar faces together completely. That is, if they are in the same list (same normal), are adjacent to each other, have the same light level, etc. My assumption would be to have each of the 6 lists sorted by the axis they rest on, then by the other two axes (the list for the top of a block would be sorted by it's Y value, then X, then Z). With this alone, I could quite easily merge strips of faces, but I'm looking to merge more than just strips together when possible. I've read up on this greedy meshing algorithm, but I am having a lot of trouble understanding it. To even use it, I would think I'd need to perform a type of flood-fill per sorted list to get the groups of merge-able faces. Then, per group, perform the greedy algorithm. It all sounds awfully expensive if I would ever want dynamic terrain/lighting after initial generation. So, my question: To perform merging of faces as described (ignoring whether it's a bad idea for dynamic terrain/lighting), is there perhaps an algorithm that is simpler to implement? I would also quite happily accept an answer that walks me through the greedy algorithm in a much simpler way (a link or explanation). I don't mind a slight performance decrease if it's easier to implement or even if it's only a little better than just doing strips. I worry that most algorithms focus on triangles rather than quads and using a 2D atlas the way I am, I don't know that I could implement something triangle based with my current skills. PS: I already frustum cull per chunk and as described, I also cull faces between solid blocks. I don't occlusion cull yet and may never.

• Cannot install icaclient due to problem with ia32-libs

  I have a problem installing the package icaclient on 13.10 Saucy Salamander 64bit. It seems that there is a problem with ia32-libs and other dependencies. marc@PinballWizard:~$ sudo dpkg -i Downloads/icaclient_12.1.0_amd64.deb [sudo] password for marc: Selecting previously unselected package icaclient. (Reading database ... 179461 files and directories currently installed.) Unpacking icaclient (from .../icaclient_12.1.0_amd64.deb) ... dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of icaclient: icaclient depends on ia32-libs; however: Package ia32-libs is not installed. icaclient depends on lib32z1; however: Package lib32z1 is not installed. icaclient depends on lib32asound2; however: Package lib32asound2 is not installed. dpkg: error processing icaclient (--install): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Errors were encountered while processing: icaclient Hence, other workarounds seem not to work. I followed the instructions here - and for the last two Ubuntu releases it was surely no problem. • What about introduction to programming with C# via LINQPad?

  From different questions/answers/articles in this and some other sites, I got the idea that the introductory language for programming should be- High level Less verbose C# is one of the heavily used high level languages being used these days. It's also multi-paradigm and descendant of C, the lingua-franca of all programming languages. So, I think it has the potential to be the introductory programming language. But I felt it's a bit verbose for the novice learners. Then LINQPad came into my mind. With LINQPad, someone can start with C# without it's verbosity. Because you can just run one statement or few statements or a standalone function with LINQPad. Again you can run a full source file also. Another thing it provide is- using SQL.   I kind of screwed up the Apache "stuff" on my Mac. Usually when I visit http://localhost/, I would see the "It Works!" but now it just lists the directory and files inside /Library/WebServer/Documents. When I try to stop/start/restart the server with sudo apachectl stop, I get: httpd: Syntax error on line 68 of /etc/apache2/httpd.conf: Cannot load /usr/libexec/apache2/mod_disk_cache.so into server: dlopen(/usr/libexec/apache2/mod_disk_cache.so, 10): Symbol not found: _apr_file_info_get$INODE64\n Referenced from: /usr/libexec/apache2/mod_disk_cache.so\n Expected in: flat namespace\n in /usr/libexec/apache2/mod_disk_cache.so I don't want to do the MacPorts install, I tried it earlier but... I just want to do it via source code with the usual ./configure, make, make install. Any ideas on how to get this working? Is there a way to totally remove Apache and then reinstall a fresh version? • Excel Add-In not loading properly with 64-bit Excel 2013

  I have an Excel Add-In saved to an .xla file in %appdata%\Microsoft\Addins. In the subject version of Excel it is checked on the Add-Ins list. One thing this addin does is create a drop-down menu in ThisWorkbook's Workbook_Open sub. But the menu is not created and there is no Add-Ins tab on the ribbon. No error messages. This works fine in Excel 2010 and 2007 (at least), and worked fine on the 32-bit Excel 2013 that came preinstalled on this system before I nuked it. The really maddening thing is that if I get rid of this addin and open that same .xla file, either by double-clicking or using the Open command in Excel, the menu appears as expected. I get the same behavior if I instead open the source .xls file - it all works. I've also tried saving to a .xlam file instead of .xla, but get the same bad result. Any ideas?

  During the recent Multi Node to Single Node R12 Clone, Encountered an strange error. When doing the database portion of the clone. Below command 'adclonectx.pl' creates the Context file perl adclonectx.pl contextfile=$ORACLE_HOME/appsutil/SOURCE_CONTEXT_FILE.xml template=$ORACLE_HOME/appsutil/template/adxdbctx.tmp pairsfile=$ORACLE_HOME/appsutil/clone/pairsfile.txt initialnode   When running the same command, It dumped the below error,   file:/tmp/tmpCtxClone.xml<Line 1, Column 1>: XML-20108: (Fatal Error) Start of root element expected. AC-10006: Exception - org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: file:/tmp/tmpCtxClone.xml<Line 1, Column 1>: XML-20108: (Fatal Error) Start of root element expected. thrown while creating OAVars object for file: /tmp/tmpCtxClone.xml The new database context file has been created :   /opt/oracle/product/11.1.0_IOFT/appsutil/IOFT_frws35ta.xml   At first site, I suspected that the issue is with format of the source xml file. Hence compared with the working XML file. Result is clean. Below portion of the error struck me Thrown while creating OAVars object for file: /tmp//dummy.xml   Cause : The /tmp is 100% full.   Fix: Either remove the old files in /tmp  directory  OR  export TEMP=/new/location where there is plenty of free space.

• Using an extension to block a caller

  I have a couple of SIP phones and use callcentric. I get a lot of junk calls. I'd like to implement the following feature and would like some suggestions on how to do this: Once I get a junk call, I typically hang up. I think want to dial some number (like *23 or something) and I'd like the last number that was received to be put in a database. Any future call from that number will be directed to VM or a busy tone. I'd appreciate some pointers on how I'd go about doing this.. I prefer an open source solution.
