• Executing NUnit Tests using the Visual Studio 2012 Test Runner

  At a recent Visual Studio 2012 event at the Calgary .NET User Group, I was told that I could run my NUnit tests directly in the Visual Studio 2012 without any special plugins.  Naturally, I was very excited and I immediately tried running my NUnit tests. I was somewhat disappointed to see that the Test Runner did not discover any of my NUnit tests.  Apparently, you do still need to install an extension that supports NUnit.  Microsoft has completely re-written the Test Runner in Visual Studio 2012 and opened it up for anyone to write Test Adapters for any unit test framework (not just MSTest).  Once the correct test adapters are installed, everything works great.  Luckily, there are a good number of adapters already written. Here are some Test Adapters that you might find useful: NUnit Test Adapter – This one is still in beta, but tit does work with the official Visual Studio 2012 release xUnit.net Test Adapter Silverlight Unit Test Adapter Chutzpah Test Adapter Overall, I still prefer the unit test runner in ReSharper, but this is a great new feature for those who might not have a ReSharper license.

• Blue screen - BCCode: 7F

  I've recently bought a refurbished Toshiba Satellite A660 11M and I get the blue screen of death appearing fairly frequently now, and I can't seem to work out why or how to prevent/cure it. Firstly I thought it was due to Zone Alarm from what I read on the net, but then I thought it was a memory issue after it crashed whilst I was running Memtest. But after I ran Memtest a second time, it completed without any errors... • Windows 7 systeminfo reporting incorrect System Boot Time?

  I work 9-5 and switch my PC off when I leave the office each day. When doing timesheets I need to know what time I got to work, so I usually use cmd systeminfo for finding the System Boot Time. Since upgrading to Windows 7 however, it's started reporting bizarre numbers between 11pm-2am instead of 8-9am. Today it says it booted at 11:34pm last night! I checked the event log and there is no entries between when I shutdown at 5:30pm yesterday and booted around 8am this morning. Has anyone else encountered this?

• Concurrency with listeners and upload: is this solution sound?

  I'm working on an Android app. We have listeners for position data and camera capture which is timed on a background thread (not a service). The timer thread dictates when the image is captured and also when the data is cached in a local sqlite db. So, my question is how to properly store the location data as it comes in based on the listeners and pull that data so that the database can be updated as the camera capture is executed. I can't put the location data into the database as it arrives because it is processed more frequently than the camera images and the camera images are what dominates the architecture at the moment. (Location data is supplement). However I need the location data to get a rough location of the where the image is captured. My first thought was to have singleton store the location data. And have a semaphore on the getInstance method so if the database update is happening (after an image is captured) we don't have an error. The location data can wait for the database update or it can be lost for that particular event it doesn't really matter. What are you thoughts? Am I on the right track? (And is this the right sub-site or would this be better on stackoverflow?)

• Shared FC LVM VG with LVs for each KVM VM. Clvm required?

  I have 2 virtual machine hosts running Ubuntu 12.04 and KVM managed with libvirt. They are both connected to the same VG which is a LUN on my SAN over FC. I provision LVs on this shared VG for each VM. I don't think I need HA or failover, but I do want live migration between the hosts. Do I need clvm in this case? As long as I don't try to start the same VM on each host should this work? Clvm requires lots of overhead with clustering tools that I don't think I need. I can deal with manually restarting VMs on other hosts in the event of a hardware failure.

  I am working on a game, in which you can create mazes. You place blocks on a 16x16 grid, while choosing from a variety of block to make the level with. I tried shelving it to a .bin file, but it returns some error dealing with surfaces. How can I go about saving and loading levels? • Wheel rotation, to change velocity of vehicle

This is done in my update method in my world class. Is there anyway to change the code I have above, so that movement on the wheel is recognised instantly and updates the velocity of v instantly too?

• Screen flicker -> Severe System Slowdown?

  I'm using a Dell D830 laptop, and over the last few weeks it's been developing a very irritating screen flicker problem that leads to the system slowing down almost to the point of unusability. At seemingly random times (no commonality between how long the system has been running, what I was doing, what applications were open, etc.) my screen (I use two external LCD's with the laptop closed in a dock) flickers for a moment, then the system becomes incredibly slow. The screen redraws painfully slowly--almost like what you might expect to see with generic graphics drivers installed--and the entire system is maddeningly unresponsive. The only thing that seems to be able to correct the issue is a restart. I've checked the event logs and nothing out of the ordinary is there, and definitely nothing that's common to all of the events. I'm running XP Pro SP2. Any ideas?

• Mobile App Notifications in the Enterprise Space: UX Considerations

  Here is a really super website of UX patterns for Android: Android Patterns. I was particularly interested in the event-driven notification patterns (aka status bar notifications to developers). Android - unlike iOS (i.e., the iPhone) - offers a superior centralized notifications system for users.   (Figure copyright Android Patterns)   Research in the enterprise applications space shows how users on-the-go, prefer this approach, as: Users can manage their notification alerts centrally, across all media, apps and for device activity, and decide the order in which to deal with them, and when. Notifications, unlike messages in a dialog or information message in the UI, do not block a task flow (and we need to keep task completion to under three minutes). See the Anti-Patterns slideshare presentation on this blocking point too. These notifications must never interrupt a task flow by launching an activity from the background. Instead, the user can launch an activity from the notification. What users do need is the ability to filter this centralized approach, and to personalize the experience of which notifications are added, what the reminder is, ability to turn off, and so on. A related point concerning notifications is when used to provide users with a record of actions then you can lighten up on lengthy confirmation messages that pop up (toasts in the Android world) used when transactions or actions are sent for processing or into a workflow. Pretty much all the confirmation needs to say is the action is successful along with key data such as dollar amount, customer name, or whatever. I am a user of Android (Nexus S), BlackBerry (Curve), and iOS devices (iPhone 3GS and 4). In my opinion, the best notifications user experience for the enterprise user is offered by Android. Blackberry is good, but not as polished and way clunkier than Android’s. What you get on the iPhone, out of the box, is useless in the enterprise. • How to get Windows Server 2008 VM to use multiple cores

  I have a Windows Server 2008 machine running in VirtualBox. On initial installation, only one processor was made available, but now I want to run it as a multiprocessor machine. I have made all four cores available in the VirtualBox settings (as well as enabling VT-x/AMD-V and Nested Paging), but Task Manager still only shows one CPU. However, the four CPU cores are visible in Device Manager under Processors. • Change a Foreign Action's Display Text

  I want the display text on an Action on a Node to show something about the underlying object. But the Action is registered somewhere in the layer (i.e., in the registry), i.e., I have no control over it. How do I change the display text in this scenario? Here's how.   Business Continuity Governance In order to ensure data continuity for an organization, they need to ensure they know how to handle a data or network emergency because all systems have the potential to fail. Data Continuity Checklist: Disaster Recovery Plan/Policy Backups Redundancy Trained Staff Business Continuity Policies In order to protect data in case of any emergency a company needs to put in place a Disaster recovery plan and policies that can be executed by IT staff to ensure the continuity of the existing data and/or limit the amount of data that is not contiguous.  A disaster recovery plan is a comprehensive statement of consistent actions to be taken before, during and after a disaster, according to Geoffrey H. Wold. He also states that the primary objective of disaster recovery planning is to protect the organization in the event that all or parts of its operations and/or computer services are rendered unusable. Furthermore, companies can mandate through policies that IT must maintain redundant hardware in case of any hardware failures and redundant network connectivity incase the primary internet service provider goes down.  Additionally, they can require that all staff be trained in regards to the Disaster recovery policy to ensure that all parties evolved are knowledgeable to execute the recovery plan. • Events 1030 and 1006 in Windows 2003

  I've got a computer running Windows 2003 R2 Standard Edition Service Pack 2 and periodically (every 5 minutes) the systems generates 2 errors that can be seen in the event viewer. The codes of the events are 1030, 1006 that seems to be related to group policies... I don´t know if these events are realted to the perfomance of the system but anyway i would like to fix them. I've googled around and seems to be a common problem but i haven't found a solution for these events. Do you know how can be fix it? Thanks in advance

• Do I need to create my own or use a commercial server for the features and matchmaking options I want my game to support?

  So I'm developing an indie turn-based game for iOS and, in coding up a Game Center matchmaking class, I'm starting to question whether Game Center is even the best choice for what I want this game to do. I need to figure out whether I need to create my own server, invest in a preexisting client or server service, or if I even need to use a server at all. If I do need to use a ready-made service other than Game Center, which server would accomodate my game's needs best? I have limited resources and funds. Here is the list of features I want my game to support, ideally: Turn-based gameplay (a la "with Friends" and "with Buddies" games) Smart matchmaking (matching users up with other players of comparable skill/achievements) Random matchmaking Facebook matchmaking Specific username matchmaking Contact list matchmaking A way to select what "type" of match you want to challenge an opponent to. (In random, smart, and Facebook matchmaking, there will be different "wagers" the player can make. [e.g. "I wanna play a random opponent for 1000 points. Now, I wanna play my Facebook buddy for 1,000,000 points."] There will be a predetermined range of amounts you can play for. It won't be customizable.) Buddies list capability (Game-buddies, as opposed to contacts and Facebook) A higher concurrent game cap than Game Center offers (which I still can't really find a straight answer on) Scalability (it should support 2 or 20,000,000 players) Objective-C compatibility Flexibility (for all the stuff I haven't thought of yet) Am I dreaming, here? Is there even a service that can handle all of these features? Do I need to invest months in learning a networking language to build my own? If so, how much would I need to spend on hardware? I've been looking around all morning and, so far, the only seemingly viable option is SmartFox. I was experimenting with how many concurrent games I could get going and my ADHD kicked in at about 80 games. 80 concurrent games would be great for my game, but again, I need the other features I mentioned too. • Subterranean IL: Exception handling 1

  Today, I'll be starting a look at the Structured Exception Handling mechanism within the CLR. Exception handling is quite a complicated business, and, as a result, the rules governing exception handling clauses in IL are quite strict; you need to be careful when writing exception clauses in IL. Exception handlers Exception handlers are specified using a .try clause within a method definition. .try <TryStartLabel> to <TryEndLabel> <HandlerType> handler <HandlerStartLabel> to <HandlerEndLabel> As an example, a basic try/catch block would be specified like so: TryBlockStart: // ... leave.s CatchBlockEndTryBlockEnd:CatchBlockStart: // at the start of a catch block, the exception thrown is on the stack callvirt instance string [mscorlib]System.Object::ToString() call void [mscorlib]System.Console::WriteLine(string) leave.s CatchBlockEnd CatchBlockEnd: // method code continues... .try TryBlockStart to TryBlockEnd catch [mscorlib]System.Exception handler CatchBlockStart to CatchBlockEnd There are four different types of handler that can be specified: catch <TypeToken> This is the standard exception catch clause; you specify the object type that you want to catch (for example, [mscorlib]System.ArgumentException). Any object can be thrown as an exception, although Microsoft recommend that only classes derived from System.Exception are thrown as exceptions. filter <FilterLabel> A filter block allows you to provide custom logic to determine if a handler block should be run. This functionality is exposed in VB, but not in C#. finally A finally block executes when the try block exits, regardless of whether an exception was thrown or not. fault This is similar to a finally block, but a fault block executes only if an exception was thrown. This is not exposed in VB or C#. You can specify multiple catch or filter handling blocks in each .try, but fault and finally handlers must have their own .try clause. We'll look into why this is in later posts. Scoped exception handlers The .try syntax is quite tricky to use; it requires multiple labels, and you've got to be careful to keep separate the different exception handling sections. However, starting from .NET 2, IL allows you to use scope blocks to specify exception handlers instead. Using this syntax, the example above can be written like so: .try { // ... leave.s EndSEH}catch [mscorlib]System.Exception { callvirt instance string [mscorlib]System.Object::ToString() call void [mscorlib]System.Console::WriteLine(string) leave.s EndSEH}EndSEH:// method code continues... As you can see, this is much easier to write (and read!) than a stand-alone .try clause. Next time, I'll be looking at some of the restrictions imposed by SEH on control flow, and how the C# compiler generated exception handling clauses.

• Checking if an Unloaded Collection Contains Elements

  If you want to know if an unloaded collection in an entity contains elements, or count them, without actually loading them, you need to use a custom query; that is because the Count property (if the collection is not mapped with lazy=”extra”) and the LINQ Count() and Any() methods force the whole collection to be loaded. • RemoteApp: Logging in as user x disconnects user y

  I'm having a pretty bizarre problem with a Terminal Services server used for RemoteApp. In our network the server works as it should, but at a client's office if two users log in simultaneously, the first one gets disconnected as the other one connects. The users belong to the same group but have individual users. The similar configuration works fine for all other clients. About the server, it's Windows 2008 R2 x64, no AD, SSL encrypted connections. Event viewer shows no useful information. Any hints where to start debugging? Do you need more info about the setup?

• Logging off does not kill process in Windows Server 2003

  I have a Windows Server 2003(Enterprise, SP2). My understanding was that any process created by a user will be terminated when the user loggs off the account. But its not happening. I login via Administrator account. Start a simple java process and logoff. But the process is not killed. Is there any configuration for this or something? I am mostly a software programmer and not much in to servers and so I am stuck. I found out that while logging off, 1) Win32 is supposed to send a CTRL_LOGOFF_EVENT to all processes started by that user. 2) JVM is supposed to handle this event and terminate the VM. But I can't understand why my java process is not killed when i logoff. Any idea!!!

• What triggered the popularity of lambda functions in modern mainstream programming languages?

  In the last few years anonymous functions (AKA lambda functions) have become a very popular language construct and almost every major / mainstream programming language has introduced them or is planned to introduce them in an upcoming revision of the standard. Yet, anonymous functions are a very old and very well-known concept in Mathematics and Computer Science (invented by the mathematician Alonzo Church around 1936, and used by the Lisp programming language since 1958, see e.g. here). So why didn't today's mainstream programming languages (many of which originated 15 to 20 years ago) support lambda functions from the very beginning and only introduced them later? And what triggered the massive adoption of anonymous functions in the last few years? Is there some specific event, new requirement or programming technique that started this phenomenon? IMPORTANT NOTE The focus of this question is the introduction of anonymous functions in modern, main-stream (and therefore, maybe with a few exceptions, non functional) languages. Also, note that anonymous functions (blocks) are present in Smalltalk, which is not a functional language, and that normal named functions have been present even in procedural languages like C and Pascal for a long time. Please do not overgeneralize your answers by speaking about "the adoption of the functional paradigm and its benefits", because this is not the topic of the question.
