• Story of success: MySQL Enterprise Backup (MEB) was successfully integrated with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) via System Backup to Tape (SBT) interface.

  Since version 3.6 MEB supports backups to tape through the SBT interface.The officially supported tool for such backups to tape is Oracle Secure Backup (OSB).But there are a lot of other Storage Managers. MEB allows to use them through the SBT interface. Since version 3.7 it also has option --sbt-environment which allows to pass environment variables, not needed by OSB, to third-party managers. At the same time MEB can not guarantee it would work with all of them.This month we were contacted by a customer who wanted to use IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) with MEB. We could only say them same thing I wrote in previous paragraph: this solution is supposed to work, but you have to be pioneers of this technology. And they agreed. They agreed to be the pioneers and so the story begins.MEB requires following options to be specified by those who want to connect it to SBT interface:--sbt-database-name: a name which should be handed over to SBT interface. This can be any name. Default, MySQL, works for most cases, so user is not required to specify this option.--sbt-lib-path: path to SBT library. For TSM this library comes with "Data Protection for Oracle", which, in its turn, interfaces with Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN), which uses SBT interface. So you need to install it even if you don't use Oracle.--sbt-environment: environment for third-party manager. This option is not needed when you use OSB, but almost always necessary for third-party SBT managers. TSM requires variable TDPO_OPTFILE to be set and point to the TSM configuration file.--backup-image=sbt:: path to the image. • Working with Timelines with LINQ to Twitter

  When first working with the Twitter API, I thought that using SinceID would be an effective way to page through timelines. In practice it doesn’t work well for various reasons. To explain why, Twitter published an excellent document that is a must-read for anyone working with timelines: Twitter Documentation: Working with Timelines This post shows how to implement the recommended strategies in that document by using LINQ to Twitter. You should read the document in it’s entirety before moving on because my explanation will start at the bottom and work back up to the top in relation to the Twitter document. What follows is an explanation of SinceID, MaxID, and how they come together to help you efficiently work with Twitter timelines. The Role of SinceID Specifying SinceID says to Twitter, “Don’t return tweets earlier than this”. What you want to do is store this value after every timeline query set so that it can be reused on the next set of queries.  The next section will explain what I mean by query set, but a quick explanation is that it’s a loop that gets all new tweets. The SinceID is a backstop to avoid retrieving tweets that you already have. Here’s some initialization code that includes a variable named sinceID that will be used to populate the SinceID property in subsequent queries: // last tweet processed on previous query set ulong sinceID = 210024053698867204; ulong maxID; const int Count = 10; var statusList = new List<status>(); Here, I’ve hard-coded the sinceID variable, but this is where you would initialize sinceID from whatever storage you choose (i.e. a database). The first time you ever run this code, you won’t have a value from a previous query set. Initially setting it to 0 might sound like a good idea, but what if you’re querying a timeline with lots of tweets? Because of the number of tweets and rate limits, your query set might take a very long time to run. A caveat might be that Twitter won’t return an entire timeline back to Tweet #0, but rather only go back a certain period of time, the limits of which are documented for individual Twitter timeline API resources. So, to initialize SinceID at too low of a number can result in a lot of initial tweets, yet there is a limit to how far you can go back. What you’re trying to accomplish in your application should guide you in how to initially set SinceID. I have more to say about SinceID later in this post. The other variables initialized above include the declaration for MaxID, Count, and statusList. The statusList variable is a holder for all the timeline tweets collected during this query set. You can set Count to any value you want as the largest number of tweets to retrieve, as defined by individual Twitter timeline API resources. To effectively page results, you’ll use the maxID variable to set the MaxID property in queries, which I’ll discuss next. Initializing MaxID On your first query of a query set, MaxID will be whatever the most recent tweet is that you get back. Further, you don’t know what MaxID is until after the initial query. The technique used in this post is to do an initial query and then use the results to figure out what the next MaxID will be.  Here’s the code for the initial query: var userStatusResponse = (from tweet in twitterCtx.Status where tweet.Type == StatusType.User && tweet.ScreenName == "JoeMayo" && tweet.SinceID == sinceID && tweet.Count == Count select tweet) .ToList(); statusList.AddRange(userStatusResponse); // first tweet processed on current query maxID = userStatusResponse.Min( status => ulong.Parse(status.StatusID)) - 1; The query above sets both SinceID and Count properties. As explained earlier, Count is the largest number of tweets to return, but the number can be less. A couple reasons why the number of tweets that are returned could be less than Count include the fact that the user, specified by ScreenName, might not have tweeted Count times yet or might not have tweeted at least Count times within the maximum number of tweets that can be returned by the Twitter timeline API resource. Another reason could be because there aren’t Count tweets between now and the tweet ID specified by sinceID. Setting SinceID constrains the results to only those tweets that occurred after the specified Tweet ID, assigned via the sinceID variable in the query above. The statusList is an accumulator of all tweets receive during this query set. To simplify the code, I left out some logic to check whether there were no tweets returned. If  the query above doesn’t return any tweets, you’ll receive an exception when trying to perform operations on an empty list. Yeah, I cheated again. Besides querying initial tweets, what’s important about this code is the final line that sets maxID. It retrieves the lowest numbered status ID in the results. Since the lowest numbered status ID is for a tweet we already have, the code decrements the result by one to keep from asking for that tweet again. Remember, SinceID is not inclusive, but MaxID is. The maxID variable is now set to the highest possible tweet ID that can be returned in the next query. The next section explains how to use MaxID to help get the remaining tweets in the query set. Retrieving Remaining Tweets Earlier in this post, I defined a term that I called a query set. Essentially, this is a group of requests to Twitter that you perform to get all new tweets. A single query might not be enough to get all new tweets, so you’ll have to start at the top of the list that Twitter returns and keep making requests until you have all new tweets. The previous section showed the first query of the query set. The SinceID property prevents reading tweets that we’ve already read and Count specifies the largest number of tweets to return. Earlier, I mentioned how it was important to check how many tweets were returned because failing to do so will result in an exception when subsequent code runs on an empty list. The code above protects against this problem by only working with the results if Twitter actually returns tweets. Reasons why there wouldn’t be results include: if the first query got all the new tweets there wouldn’t be more to get and there might not have been any new tweets between the SinceID and MaxID settings of the most recent query. The code for loading the returned tweets into statusList and getting the maxID are the same as previously explained. The important point here is that MaxID is being reset, not SinceID. As explained in the Twitter documentation, paging occurs from the newest tweets to oldest, so setting MaxID lets us move from the most recent tweets down to the oldest as specified by SinceID. The two loop conditions cause the loop to continue as long as tweets are being read or a max number of tweets have been read.  Logically, you want to stop reading when you’ve read all the tweets and that’s indicated by the fact that the most recent query did not return results. I put the check to stop after 30 tweets are reached to keep the demo from running too long – in the console the response scrolls past available buffer and I wanted you to be able to see the complete output. Yet, there’s another point to be made about constraining the number of items you return at one time. The Twitter API has rate limits and making too many queries per minute will result in an error from twitter that LINQ to Twitter raises as an exception. To use the API properly, you’ll have to ensure you don’t exceed this threshold. Looking at the statusList.Count as done above is rather primitive, but you can implement your own logic to properly manage your rate limit. Yeah, I cheated again. Summary Now you know how to use LINQ to Twitter to work with Twitter timelines. After reading this post, you have a better idea of the role of SinceID - the oldest tweet already received. You also know that MaxID is the largest tweet ID to retrieve in a query. Together, these settings allow you to page through results via one or more queries. You also understand what factors affect the number of tweets returned and considerations for potential error handling logic. Evrything is working fine but, only issue is coming when we are trying to apply custom formatter to column. This issue comes only when we are dynamically assign "colModel" to jqgrid. • IE8 losing session cookies in popup windows.

  We have an ASP.NET application that uses Forms Auth. When users log in, a session ID cookie and a Forms Auth ticket (stored as a cookie) are generated. These are session cookies, not permanent cookies. It is intentional and desirable that when the browser closes, the user is effectively logged out. Once a user logs in, a new window is popped up using window.open('location here');. The page that is opened is effectively the workspace the user works in throughout the rest of their session. From this page, other pop-ups are also used. Lately, we've had a number of customers (all using latest versions of IE8) complaining that the when they log in, the initial pop-up takes them back to the log in screen rather than their homepage. Alternately, users can sometimes log in, get to the homepage (which again, is in a new pop up window), and it all seems fine, until any additional pop-ups are created, where it starts redirecting them to the log in screen again. In attempting to troubleshoot the issue, I've used good old Fiddler. When the problem starts manifesting, I've noticed that the browser is not sending up the ASP.NET session ID session cookie OR the Forms Auth ticket session cookie, even though the response to the log in POST clearly pushes down those cookies. What's more strange is if I CTRL+N to open a new window from the popped-up window that is missing the session cookies, then manually type in the URL to the home page, those cookies magically appear again. However, subsequent window.open(); calls will continue to be broken, not sending the session cookies and taking the user to the log in screen. It's important to note that sometimes, for seemingly no good reason, those same users can suddenly log in and work normally for a while, then it goes back to broken. Now, I've ensured that there are no browser add-ons, plug-ins, toolbars, etc. are running. I've added our site as a trusted site and dropped the security settings to Low, I've modified the Cookie Privacy policy to "accept all" and even disabled automatic policy settings, manually forcing it to accept everything and include session cookies. Nothing appears to affect it. Also note the web application resides on a single server. There is no load balancing, web gardens, server farms, clusters, etc. The server does reside behind an ISA server, but other than that it's pretty straight forward. I've been searching around for days and haven't found anything actionable. Heck, sometimes I can't even reproduce it reliably. I have found a few references to people having this same problem, but they seem to be referencing an issue that was allegedly fixed in a beta or RC release (example: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/179260/ie8-loses-cookies-when-opening-a-new-window-after-a-redirect). These are release versions of IE, with up-to-date patches. I'm aware that I can try to set permanent cookies instead of session cookies. However, this has drastic security implications for our application. Update It seems that the problem automagically goes away when the user is added as a Local Administrator on the machine. Only time will tell if this change permanently (and positively) affects this problem. Time to bust out ProcMon and see if there is a resource access problem.

• Overriding the save() method of a model that uses django-mptt

  I've been using django-mptt in my project for a while now, it's fabulous. Recently, I've found a need to override a model's save() method that uses mptt, and I'm getting an error when I try to save a new instance of that model: Exception Type: ValueError at /admin/scrivener/page/add/ Exception Value: Cannot use None as a query value I'm assuming that this is a result of the fact that the instance hasn't been stuck into a tree yet, but I'm not sure how to go about fixing this. • Loop through values and display in a pdf file

  Hello all! i have written the following code: As you can see there is a for loop to go through some values and display them in the generated pdf. The problem is that all the values are being written at the same place. I have tried to insert a new line but it does not seem to work. Can anyone suggest me how i can do it? • Resolving html entities with NSXMLParse on iPhone

  Hi all, i think i read every single web page relating to this problem but i still cannot find a solution to it, so here i am. I have an HTML web page wich is not under my control and i need to parse it from my iPhone application. It calls foundCharacters: for "Bye Bye" and then it calls resolveExternalEntityName:systemID:: with an entityName of "egrave". In this method i'm just returning the character "è" trasformed in an NSData, the foundCharacters is called again adding the string "è" to the previous one "Bye Bye " and then the parser raise the NSXMLParserUndeclaredEntityError error.   I am having an impossible time getting asp.net 4.0 to work in any fashion at all. In fact, I completely wiped my server, reinstalled with Server 2008 R2 Standard (running on a VMWare ESXi box, not that it should matter), and cannot even get a test .aspx page to work. Here is exactly what I did: Installed 2008 R2 Standard Activated windows and enabled Remote Desktop Installed the Web Server Role with the necessary role services(common http, asp.net, logging, tracing, management service and FTP) Enabled the management service Installed .Net Framework 4.0 via web executable Added FTP publishing to the default web site Switched default web site application pool to asp.net 4.0 (integrated) Added a 'test.aspx' file to the inetpub\wwwroot folder (contents below) Opened a browser to http://localhost/test.aspx and received a 500.0 error (also below) What am I missing? • Using ASP.NET MVC 2 with Ninject 2 from scratch

  I just did File - New Project last night on a new project. Ah, the smell of green fields. I am using the just released ASP.NET MVC 2 (i.e. no preview or release candidate, the real thing), and thought I'd get off to a good start using Ninject 2 (also released version) with the MVC extensions. I downloaded the MVC extensions project, opened it in VS2008Sp1, built it in release mode, and then went into the mvc2\build\release folder and copied Ninject.dll and Ninject.Web.Mvc.dll from there to the Libraries folder on my project (so that I can lug them around in source control and always have the right version everywhere). I didn't include the corresponding .xml files - should I? Do they just provide intellisense, or some other function? Not a big deal I believe. Anyhoo, I followed the most up-to-date advice I could find; I referenced the DLLs in my MVC2 project, then went to work on Global.asax.cs. First I made it inherit from NinjectHttpApplication. I removed the Application_Start() method, and overrode OnApplicationStarted() instead. Here is that method: protected override void OnApplicationStarted() { base.OnApplicationStarted(); AreaRegistration.RegisterAllAreas(); RegisterRoutes(RouteTable.Routes); // RegisterAllControllersIn(Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly()); } And I also followed the advice of VS and implemented the CreateKernel method: protected override Ninject.IKernel CreateKernel() { // RegisterAllControllersIn(Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly()); return new StandardKernel(); } That is all. No other modifications to the project. You'll notice that the RegisterAllControllersIn() method is commented out in two places above. I've figured I can run it in three different combinations, all with their funky side effects; Running it like above. I am then presented with the standard "Welcome to ASP.NET MVC" page in all its' glory. However, after this page is displayed correctly in the browser, VS shows me an exception that was thrown. It throws in NinjectControllerFactory.GetControllerInstance(), which was called with a NULL value in the controllerType parameter. Notice that this happens after the /Home page is rendered - I have no idea why it is called again, and by using breakpoints I've already determined that GetControllerInstance() has been successfully called for the HomeController. Why this new call with controllerType as null? I really have no idea. Pressing F5 at this time takes me back to the browser, no complaints there. Uncommenting the RegisterAllControllersIn() method in CreateKernel() This is where stuff is really starting to get funky. Now I get a 404 error. Some times I have also gotten an ArgumentNullException on the RegisterAllControllersIn() line, but that is pretty rare, and I have not been able to reproduce it. Uncommenting the RegisterAllControllers() method in OnApplicationStarted() (And putting the comment back on the one in CreateKernel()) Results in behavior that seems exactly like that in point 1. So to keep from going on forever - is there an exact step-by-step guide on how to set up an MVC 2 project with Ninject 2 (both non-beta release versions) to get the controllers provided by Ninject? Of course I will then start providing some actual stuff for injection (like ISession objects and repositories, loggers etc), but I thought I'd get this working first.   Hello, I'm in the progress of learning Django at the moment but I can't figure out how to solve this problem on my own. I'm reading the book Developers Library - Python Web Development With Django and in one chapter you build a simple CMS system with two models (Story and Category), some generic and custom views together with templates for the views. The book only contains code for listing stories, story details and search. I wanted to expand on that and build a page with nested lists for categories and stories. - Category1 -- Story1 -- Story2 - Category2 - Story3 etc. I managed to figure out how to add my own generic object_list view for the category listing. My problem is that the Story model have STATUS_CHOICES if the Story is public or not and a custom manager that'll only fetch the public Stories per default. I can't figure out how to tell my generic Category list view to also use a custom manager and only fetch the public Stories. Everything works except that small problem. I'm able to create a list for all categories with a sub list for all stories in that category on a single page, the only problem is that the list contains non public Stories. I don't know if I'm on the right track here. My urls.py contains a generic view that fetches all Category objects and in my template I'm using the *category.story_set.all* to get all Story objects for that category, wich I then loop over. I think it would be possible to add a if statement in the template and use the VIEWABLE_STATUS from my model file to check if it should be listed or not. The problem with that solution is that it's not very DRY compatible. Is it possible to add some kind of manager for the Category model too that only will fetch in public Story objects when using the story_set on a category? Or is this the wrong way to attack my problem? • Using dispatchertimer in combination with an asynchroneous call

We have an issue in our Silverlight application which uses WCF and Entity Framework, where we need to trap the event whenever a user shuts down the application by closing the web page or the browser instead of closing the silverlight application. This is in order to verify if any changes have been made, in which case we would ask the user if he wants to save before leaving. We were able to accomplish the part which consists in trapping the closing of the web page: we wrote some code in the application object that have the web page call a method in the silverlight application object. The problem starts when in this method, we do an asynchroneous call to the Web Service to verify if changes have occured (IsDirty). We are using a DispatcherTimer to check for the return of the asynchroneous call. The problem is that the asynchroneous call never completes (in debug mode, it never ends up stepping into the _BfrServ_Customer_IsDirtyCompleted method), while it used to work fine before we added this new functionality. You will find belowthe code we are using. I am new to writing timers in combination with asynchroneous call so I may be doing something wrong but I cannot figure out what. I have some training sessions being listed out on a page, each calling an employeeSearch Web User Controller so people can search for employees to add to the training session. I have the Employee Names and Employee IDs listed out in JS on the page and using the jQuery autocomplete i have them search for the employee and populate a hidden field in the User controller. Once the process is done they have the option of adding yet another employee. So i had Autocompelte 'work' in all the employee search boxes, but one i do the initial search (postback) autocomplete won't work again. I can't move the jQuery into the page calling all the controllers because i have no way of referencing the specific *tb_EmployeeName* textbox AND *hf_EmployeeID* hidden field. • Code that Worked with MultiView fails with Wizard ASP.NET

  I originally created a process that occurred by transitioning between views in a multiview and it worked fine. Now, I've moved this same code into a ASP.NET Wizard and it keeps throwing an error at the second step. The error is: Method 'System.Object AndObject(System.Object, System.Object)' has no supported translation to SQL. Any ideas why this would occur when moving the code into the wizard?   I wanna take a rect from CGPDFPage (the portion of image around the user's touch point(x,y)) and scale it by a scaleFactor (ie 2x). Below the code I've used to get CGPDFPage's rect. The problem with it is the scaleFactor support. The idea is: 1) pageRect size is pageRect.size *2 2) myThumbRect (the region to zoom) become resultImageSize/scaleFactor (because the final output will be scaleFactor times bigger) 3) pointOfClick (x,y) become pointOfClick(2x,2y) 4) scale up the context by factor CGContextScaleCTM(ctx, scaleFactor, -scaleFactor); 5) grab the rect However the result is an empty image. Looking inside page source code I see that the following div is outside forms tag: <div class="ui-widget-overlay" style="z-index: 1001; width: 1280px; height: 65089px;" jQuery1267345392312="20"/> If I set modal to false, the error doesn't happen. I think the problem is that the div working as modal is outside the form. What do you think?

  I'm trying to add custom paging to my site using the ObjectDataSource paging. I believe I've correctly added the stored procedures I need, and brought them up through the DAL and BLL. There's code in code file to put the value of the GetMessagesCount call in the lblCount, and that always has a sensible value in it. I've tried breaking in the BLL and stepping through, and the backend is getting called, and it is returning what looks like the right information and data, but somehow between the ODS and the GridView it's vanishing. I created a mock data source which returned numbered rows of random numbers and attached it to this form, and the custom paging worked so I think my understanding of the technique is good. I just can't see why it fails here! Any help really appreciated.
