• Core Data iPhone how often should I call [managedObjectContext save:&error] when doing 50k record in

  I will be doing an occiasional import from XML into core data. I have around 50k entities that will be added. My question is how often should I call [managedObjectContext save:&error]. For every new entity added, or every x entities, or just at the end of the 50k import? I currently am calling it for each entity and tried only doing it for around every 10k and import speed went up drastically but after the first 30k it would crash with: *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSGenericException', reason: '*** Collection <NSCFSet: 0x13e760> was mutated while being enumerated.' Before I spend too much time trying to diagnose what is going on there I figured I'd check if its ok to not call save on every entity? Is the # of entities before calling save limited by the amount of memory those entities are using?

  I tried to find the answer of my question on the internet, but I could not. I have a simple entity in Core data that has a Value attribute (that is integer) and a Date attribute. I want to define two methods in my .m file. First method is the ADD method. It takes two arguments: an integer value (entered by user in UI) and a date (current date by default). and then insert a record into the entity based on the arguments. Second method is like an increment method. It uses the Date as a key to find a record and then increment the integer value of that record. I don't know how to write these methods. (assume that we have an Array Controller for the table in the xib file)

• Core Data iPad/iPhone BLOBS vs File system for 20k PDFs

  I'm designing an iPad/iPhone app using core data. The main focus of the app is sorting and viewing up to 20,000 PDFs They are ~200KB each. Typically its best to not store BLOBS in a DB, but for desktop systems I've typically seen it said that if the blobs are < 1 MB then its fine to use the DB. Any considerations I should take into count? If I store them in the file system can I store them all in one directory and not have performance issues (I won't need to ever get a directory list since I'd store each's path in the DB)? Should I divide them among a handful of directories? If so is there a good rule on # of files per dir?

• Return data from subroutine while the subroutine is still processing

  Is there any way to have a subroutine send data back while still processing? For instance (this example used simply to illustrate) - a subroutine reads a file. While it is reading through the file, if some condition is met, then "return" that line and keep processing. I know there are those that will answer - why would you want to do that? and why don't you just ...?, but I really would like to know if this is possible. Thank you so much in advance.

  Working on an app where I have a large collections of managed objects against which I want to fetch a few random instances. My question is, is there any way I can use NSPredicate and NSFetchRequest to return several objects at random. I saw that you could actually add a NSFetchRequest into the entity using the data modeler, any way to do the random fetch using this? Also what would be the best method for determining the "count" of a table so I can set the bounds of the random number generator. let me know if you need more details. Thanks! Nick

However, what if I only want to update some of the fields? For example, let's say I have an Account entity with 20 fields, but I only want to update Username and Password? ModelState.IsValid validates against all the properties, regardless of whether they are referenced in the submitted form. How can I get it to validate only the fields that are referenced in the form?

  Hi, I'm trying to get to know Core Data (I'm a noob at iPhone development) and in order to do this I'm trying to get an object from the fetchedresultscontroller and NSlog it's name (a property of the object). I tried to do it like this: NSArray *ar = [NSArray arrayWithArray:[fetchedResultsController sections]]; Task *t = [ar objectAtIndex:0]; NSLog(@"%@", t.taskName); However, the app crashed with this error: the app crashes with the error Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '* -[_NSDefaultSectionInfo taskName]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x3d1f670' I have since learned that you need to use the fetched objects property for this, but then what is sections for? Thanks for any help, sorry if this is a supremely stupid question. I've looked over the documentation but still don't understand.

• Where to put data management rules for complex data validation in ASP.NET MVC?

  Hello, I am currently working on an ASP.NET MVC2 project. This is the first time I am working on a real MVC web application. The ASP.NET MVC website really helped me to get started really fast, but I still have some obscure knowledge concerning datamodel validation. My problem is that I do not really know where to manage my filled datamodel when it comes to complex validation rules. For example, validating a string field with a Regex is quite easy and I know that I just have to decorate my field with a specific attribute, so data management rules are implemented in the model. But if I have multiple fields that I need to validate which each other, for example multiple datetime that need to be correctly set following a specific time rule, where do I need to validate them? I know that I could create my own validation attributes, but sometimes validation ask a specific validation path which is to complex to be validated using attributes. This first question also leads me to a related question which is, is it right to validate a model in the controller? Because for the moment that is the only way I found for complex validation. But I find this a bit dirty and I feel it does not really fit a the controller role and much harder to test (multiple code path). Thanks.

I use one form to add and edit (AddContForm). Add button on the frmStart works fine, however I experience some problems with the edit button as when I press it and enter new data they are added as new entry however the previous entry is still there. • Binding Many-to-Many Core Data relationships in UI

  Basically my setup is this. I have a many-to-many relationship in Core Data where a student entity can have multiple courses, and a course entity can have multiple students. My problem is in trying to figure out how to bind this relationship to the UI in Interface Builder. I want to be able to add courses to a course array controller, then have those courses displayed in a popup menu in a NSTableView in the Edit Student window where you can add courses to a student. • ListView adapter data change without ListView being notified

  I've written a ListActivity that has a custom list adapter. The list is being updated from a ContentProvider when onCreate is run. I also have a service that gets started when I run the app and it first updates the ContentProvider, then sends a Broadcast that the content has been updated. My ListActivity recieves the broadcast and tries to update my ListView. My problem is, I'm getting intermittent errors about the ListView adapter data changing without the ListView being notified. I call the notifyDataSetChanged() method on my list adapter right after I update it. What it seems like is happening is the list is still in the process of being updated after first call in onCreate when it recieves the broadcast from the service to update, so it tries to update my ListView before it's finished updating from it's first run. Does this make sense? Here is some of my code.   Hello...I am new to PHP (never really used it before tonight) and I need to use a PHP script to read the contents of a file on my website (http://kylemills.net/Geocaching/BadgeGen/MacroFiles/BadgeGenBeta.gsk) and then take some specific varying data and output it. I have a feeling it could be to do with the while loop? it could be looping around in there and not letting anything else run?

• Core data setReturnsDistinctResult not working

  So i'm building a small application, it uses core data database of ~25mb size with 4 entities. It's for bus timetables. In one table named "Stop" there are have ~1300 entries of bus stops with atributes "name", "id", "longitude", "latitude" and couple relationships. Now there are many stops with same name but different coordinates and id. Search is implemented using NSPredicate. So I want to show all distinct stop names in table view, i'm using setReturnsDistinctResults with NSDictionaryResultType and setPropertiesToFetch. But setReturnsDistinctResult is not working and I'm still getting all entries.   hello guys! i have a table with hierarchical structure. like this: and table data shown here: this strategy gives me the ability to have unbounded categories and sub-categories. i use ASP.net 3.5 SP1 and LINQ and MSSQL Server2005. How to convert it to XML? I can Do it with Dataset Object and ".GetXML()" method. but how to implement it with LINQtoSQL or LINQtoXML??? or if there is another simpler way to perform that? what is your suggestion? the best way? I searched the web but found nothing for .net 3.5 featuers.
