• ASP.NET MVC - Alternative to Role Provider?

  Hey there, I'm trying to avoid the use of the Role Provider and Membership Provider since its way too clumsy in my opinion, and therefore I'm trying to making my own "version" which is less clumsy and more manageable/flexible. Now is my question.. is there an alternative to the Role Provider which is decent? (I know that I can do custom Role provier, membership provider etc.) By more manageable/flexible I mean that I'm limited to use the Roles static class and not implement directly into my service layer which interact with the database context, instead I'm bound to use the Roles static class which has its own database context etc, also the table names is awful.. • Access Rules created by WSAT are not enforced

  Hi, I'm trying to implement roles in my site. There are several projects in the solution, one of which is a web application. In that web application, I'm trying to use WSAT to create three roles. There are many folders for the application. I've used WSAT to define role based access rules for each folder. However, when I debug and navigate to those pages, they do not redirect to a login and show me the protected page. There are web.config files in each folder. Why would the system not enforce these rules? My web.config file has: I've tested the connections in WSAT and they work. Any ideas?

• How to force programs out of swap file when a resources-intensive batch finishes?

  We use employees' desktops for CPU-intensive simulation during the night. Desktops run Windows - usually Windows XP. Employees don't log off, they just lock the desktops, switch off their monitors and go. Every employee has a configuration file which he can edit to specify when he is most likely out of office. When that time comes a background program grabs data for simulation from the server, spawns worker processes, watches them, gets results and sends them to the server. When the time specified by the employee elapses simulation stops so that normal desktop usage is not interfered. The problem is that simuation consumes a lot of memory, so when the worker processes run they force other programs into the swap file. So when the employee comes all the programs he left are luggish and slow until he opens them one by one so that they are unswapped. Is there a way the program can force other programs out of swap file when it stops simulation so that they again run smoothly?

• Any way to have delayed_job execute some run-once code at startup and use across all jobs?

  So I've got a delayed_job task that pushes some info to an XMPP server. Ideally you create a connection to XMPP once and then constantly push data to it, rather than creating a new connection every time you have some data to send. Is there any kind of facility in delayed_job for running a sort of 'setup' method when a worker starts, have it set some instance variables (like the XMPP connection object) that can then be used by all the jobs that come up? It's okay if each worker runs its own setup method. I just don't want every job (thousands per day) connecting to the XMPP server from scratch every time. Thanks for any help!

• MPI C fprintf() output not showing up if the process hangs on MPI_Recv

  I'm writing an MPI C program. I have troubles debugging it, because whenever I use fprintf, like this: fprintf(stdout, "worker: %d", worker); if the program hangs, because of some blocking MPI_Recv, I can't see any output. I'm sure the line of code is reached, because I can put a return statement after the fprintf statement, in which case the process finishes execution and the output is printed. Any ideas, on how to print (see the output) even though the process gets blocked later by Recv? I hope this makes sense.

• Django User "per project" group assignation

  Hi, Here's my problem : my site has users, which can create projects, and access other user's projects. Each project can assign different rights to users. So, i could have Project A : user "John" is in group "manager" , and Project "B" user "John" is in group "worker". How could I use the Django User authentication model to do that ? From a SQL point a view, what i would like is to be able to add "project_id" in the primary key for the "auth_user_groups" table. I don't think profile is of any help here. Any advice ? UPDATE : "worker" and "manager" are just two examples of the permission group (or "roles") that my application defines. There will be more in the future. Eg : i will probably also have "admin", "reporting", etc...

  Hello all this is my first post. I'm working on a homework assignment with the following parameters. Piecework Workers are paid by the piece. Often worker who produce a greater quantity of output are paid at a higher rate. 1 - 199 pieces completed $0.50 each 200 - 399 $0.55 each (for all pieces) 400 - 599 $0.60 each 600 or more $0.65 each Input: For each worker, input the name and number of pieces completed. • How to generate a user role grid

  I have the following tables: users (id, username, ... ) roles (id, name) roles_users (user_id, role_id) I am wondering how I can create a nice sort of user-role-grid from that which an admin can use to administer roles to users in a clear way. What I would like is basically a table full of checkboxes sort of like this: Login Editor Admin Alice ¦ ¦ ¦ Bob ¦ ? ? Carol ¦ ¦ ? [Apply] Generating the table isn't too much of a deal, but I am very unsure how to handle it when it comes to how to name all the checkboxes and especially how to read and update the database in a not too clumsy way. Does anyone have any good advice or pointers on how to do this in a mostly clean way? I'm using the Kohana 3 framework, if there is anything there that can make this even easier, but I of course welcome any answer.

How to implement callback (or receive a message) in supervisor that will be called when child exit normally? • Browser gets blocked, workers to the rescue?

  Hello, I use JavaScript for rendering 20 tables of 100 rows each. The data for each table is provided by controller as JSON. Each table is split into section that have "totals" and have some other JavaScript logic code. Some totals are outside of the table itself. As a result JavaScript blocks browser for a couple of seconds (especially in IE6) :( I was consideting to use http://code.google.com/p/jsworker/, however Google Gears Workers (I guess workers in general) will not allow me to make changes to DOM at the worker code, and also it seems to me that I can not use jQuery inside jsworker worker code. (Maybe I am wrong here?). This issue seems to be fundamental to the JavaScript coding practice, can you share with me your thoughts how to approach it?

• NHibernate, each property is filled with a different select statement

  I'm retrieving a list of nhibernate entites which have relationships to other tables/entities. I've noticed instead of NHibernate performing JOINS and populating the properties, it retrieves the entity and then calls a select for each property. For example if a user can have many roles and I retrieve a user from the DB, Nhibernate retrieves the user and then populates the roles with another select statement. The problem is that I want to retrieve oh let's say a list of products which have various many-to-many relationships and relationships to items which have their own relationships. In the end I'm left with over a thousand DB calls to retrieve a list of 30 products. Thanks. I've also set default lazy loading to false because whenever I save the list of entities to a session, I get an error when trying to retrieve it on another page: LazyInitializationException: could not initialize proxy If anybody could shed any light I would truly appreciate it. • What does MySqlDataAdapter.Fill return when the results are empty?

  I have a 'worker' function that will be processing any and all sql queries in my program. I will need to execute queries that return result sets and ones that just execute stored procedures without any results. Is this possible with MySqlDataAdapter.Fill or do I need to use the MySqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() method?   I’m building a site that needs users created with different roles and permissions to access different areas of the site. I using mvc 2 but I can’t find much clear guidance on using the Membership tool with mvc to create accounts and roles etc. I tried the web configuration tool which works but I would like to administrate the site remotely. I used the aspnet_regsql tool so I can access the SqlMembershipProvider Schema in my Database. I also need to add more information to a user like profile info and a picture, would I add these to the membership tables or create separate tables for this? • Win32 Thread Exits Unexpectedly

  Hello, I'm writing a C++ application. I realized that one of my worker threads may terminate unexpectedly. The (VS 2005) debug log says: The thread 'Win32 Thread' (0x5d98) has exited with code -858993460 (0xcccccccc). I surrounded all the worker thread code with a try/catch block. So, if the reason was an exception, I would catch it. But I can't: try{ ... Connection* conn = connectionPool->getConnection(); // unexpected exit occurs here ... } catch(exception& e) { ... } I have ten threads running concurrently, and only one of them gets crashed after some time, while the others continue running (and getting new [OCCI] connections). Is there an exception type that is not caught by "exception"? Or what do I not know about threads/exceptions? Thanks.

• Relogging a user in with different Spring Security Authorities programmatically

  PreReq: User logs in and is given roles got from the database using a custom implementation of userService. i.e. authentication-provider user-service-ref="securityPolicyService" The implemented method loadUserByUsername gets called and the roles are load for the user for the particular club they are logging into, Default one is loaded first time in. The user then click on a different club from the UI and I call a method on a service that gets the new list of authorities for this club.   If I had, for example, a Many-to-Many mapping table called "RolesToUsers" between a Users and an Roles table, here is how I do it: // DataContext is db, usr is a User entity // newUserRolesMappings is a collection with the desired new mappings, probably // derived by looking at selections in a checkbox list of Roles on a User Edit page db.RolesToUsers.DeleteAllOnSubmit(usr.RolesToUsers); usr.RolesToUsers.Clear(); usr.RolesToUsers.AddRange(newUserRolesMappings); I used the SQL profiler once, and this seems to generate very intelligent SQL - it will only drop the rows which are no longer in the mapping relationship, and only add rows which did not already exist in the relationship. It doesn't blindly do a complete clearing and re-construction of the relationship, as I thought it would. The internet is surprisingly quiet on the subject, and the query "LinqToSQL many-to-many" mostly just turns up articles about how the LinqToSQL data mapper doesn't "support" it very well. How does everyone else update many-to-many with LinqToSQL?

• Is Amazon SQS the right choice here? Rails performance issue.

  I'm close to releasing a rails app with the common networking features (messaging, wall, etc.). I want to use some kind of background processing (most likely Bj) for off-loading tasks from the request/response cycle. This would happen when users invite friends via email to join and for email notifications. I'm not sure if I should just drop these invites and notifications in my Database, using a model and then just process it with a worker process every x minutes or if I should go for Amazon SQS, storing the messages and invites there and let my worker retrieve it from Amazon SQS for processing (sending the invites / notifications). The Amazon approach would get load off my Database but I guess it is slower to retrieve messages from there. What do you think?

• Unable to debug ASP.NET Applicatation using VS 2008 on IIS 7 running on Windows 7 x64

  Hi, I've been trying to debug an existing asp.net web application that requires me to debug against an IIS website. I've installed the app and can navigate to it on localhost. However, when I start VS 2008 as an Administrator and try to debug it, I get a message "Unable to start debugging on the web server. The IIS worker process for the launched URL is not currently running." I've looked through some of the help file contents and can't seem to figure out what is going on. Clearly, the IIS worker process IS running, since I can navigate to the site locally without VS open. My boss has suggested that it might be because my OS is 64 bit. Any ideas?

• Is there a way to query if array field contains a certain value in Doctrine2?

  Starting out with Symfony2 + Doctrine. I have a table with User objects (fos_user), for which my schema contains a roles column of an 'array' type. Doctrine saves fields of this type by serializing them from php 'array' to 'longtext' (in mysql's case). So let's say I have the following users saved into DB: **User1**: array(ROLE_ADMIN, ROLE_CUSTOM1) **User2**: array(ROLE_ADMIN, ROLE_CUSTOM2) **User3**: array(ROLE_CUSTOM2) Now in my controller I want to select all users with ROLE_ADMIN set. Is there a way to write a DQL query which would directly return me User1 and User2? Or do I need to fetch all users to have Doctrine to unserialize roles column and then for each of them do in_array('ROLE_ADMIN', $user-getRoles())? I have searched the DQL part of the manual, but so far did not find anything similar to my needs...
