Im guessing Something in my surfaceDestroyed(SurfaceHolder holder) is wrong, or maybe Im not ending the tread in the right place. Storage of leftover values in a situation of having to round down

I'm writing an app (client and server side) where the number of sales required by each employee must be kept track of in round-number form. Each month, the employees are required to sell a certain number, and this app needs to keep track of how many sales must be made for each 12 hour interval during the work week. Because I have to round the values down to a whole number, I must keep track of leftovers in the rounding process and ensure that they are always carried over. My method must ensure the storage of the leftover value even when client and server side crash, restart, close, etc. Right now, I'm working on doing this by storing the leftovers in a field in the user's account row in the database each time a value is rounded, reading the stored value, removing any portion that is used (when a whole number is reached, most of the leftover is used up), and storing the new value. This practice seems weird because while the leftovers are calculated on the client side, it's the same number for each employee, and every employee using the app is storing a copy of the same leftover data. Alternatively, I could have all clients store the data at once into the same data field on a general table, but this is just as weird. Is there a better way that this can be handled or is my method correct?

Getting error message when trying to start a virtual machine

I have been using VMWare on Windows for a long time. But after a long wait, I moved to VirtualBox on Ubuntu 11.10. I installed Ubuntu, 32 Bit, installed all available updates and installed Virtual Box. When I try to create a new Windows installation inside VirtualBox, I got the following error messages. 1st error dialogue VirtualBox - Error Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows XP. The virtual machine '**Windows XP**' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1. Details Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Component: Machine Interface: IMachine {5eaa9319-62fc-4b0a-843c-0cb1940f8a91} 2nd error dialogue **Virtualbox - Error in suplibOsinit** **Kernal driver not installed (rc--1908)** Please install the virtualbox-dkmbs package and execute 'modprobe vboxdrv' as root. Steps I tried I have already tried reinstalling VirtualBox. Google result seem to indicate the the problem happens due to Kernel updates. Is there anyway I can get this working? I need this for malware analysis and if VirtualBox is going to crash on me all the time, then I won't be able to use Ubuntu for work. Bad Performance With Games Under Wine in Ubuntu 12.04

I'm somewhat new to Linux. I've dabbled with it before but never more than just experimentation in a VM or dual boot where I almost always reverted back to Windows soon after (more due to a lack of commitment than a dislike for the OS). Anyway my problem is that in the two games (Guild Wars and Team Fortress 2) I've tried so far I get fairly bad performance. Despite both games having a "Platinum" rating I've still been forced to run both in DirectX 8, otherwise they either crash, have texture defects or the UI is missing. By "bad performance" I mean sub-30 FPS where there are some players and regular large framerate drops with video settings on low. Currently in my mind I believe the performance issues are just a problem with the drivers because my graphics card is a AMD 7850 which is virtually brand new and probably not properly supported yet but I'm unsure and would appreciate advice or tips to improve things. I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed and I am usually logged in a Gnome Classic session. I have installed AMD's proprietary drivers (Catalyst version 12.4) and have Wine 1.4 installed. I have used Winetricks to install DX9/DX10 dlls and other things.

Laptop, unable to install discrete graphics card GTX 880M

So I've bought the GT70 2PE Dominator Pro a few weeks ago and I installed Zorin OS 9 Ultimate on it. Today I tried to install the Nvidia drivers on my laptop since it has the GTX 880M, but my system became unbootable. Can anyone help me with this issue? I will write down what I've tried so far. This is what I've tried so far: Downloaded the newest Nvidia drivers from their website. Pressed CTRL+ALT+F2 to open the terminal page thingy. Logged in and got root access. Stopped the lightdm service. Ran the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-340.32.run installer. Pressed the accept button and right after that it told me the following message: The distribution-provided pre-install script failed! Continue installation anyway?. When I install anyway, it will crash my system and makes it unbootable, Does anyone know how to use my GTX 880M? Do I need to enable it on boot time somehow? Thanks for the support, Sapphire ~

Unable to start after 13.04 > 13.10 udate

At the end of the update process, clicking on the Restart button had no visible effect whatsoever. After waiting 5 to 10 minutes, I decided to reboot the computer manually. Since then, I rebooted a good dozen times (not with the hope that it would work but with the hope of reading the messages) with the same non-result and the same symptoms: I get the ASCII text-on-purple Ubuntu 13.10 . . . . splash screen with these messages: * Restoring resolver state... [OK] * Starting crash report submission daemon [OK] * Starting CUPS printing spooler/server [OK] Everything disappears. The whole process hangs at a purple screen with the mouse cursor right in the middle. At this point, I'm unable to use the mouse and the keyboard. Booting from a 12.04 CD works perfectly, Disk Utility says that all my disks are OK and I can mount my main partition without problems. Something obviously went wrong at the end of the upgrade but I have no idea what. I'd appreciate any pointer. This is the kind of moment where you really think "Next time, I'll separate my /home partition for sure". My machine is an aging but working Dell Inspiron 530 with an Intel Core Duo E2160 processor, 2 GHz of RAM and an ATI Radeon HD3650 video card. Thanks.

Installation on SSD with Windows preinstalled

I bought a laptop with this fancy SSD drive, fancy new UEFI aso. I figured at first Windows out Ubuntu in but after doing 3 DoA on 3 laptops in one day I realized that maybe keeping Windows could come in handy. So dual boot it is. And this is what I've got: Disk 1 - 500 Gb HD 300 Mb Windoze only says "Healthy" don't know what it's for. 600 Mb "Healthy (EFI partition)" 186.30 Gb NTFS "OS (C:)" "Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)" 258.45 Gb NTFS "Data (D:)" "Healthy" 20.00 Gb "Healthy (Recovery Partition)" Disk 2 - 24 Gb SSD 4.00 Gb "Healthy (OEM Partition)" 18.36 Gb "Healthy (Primary Partition)" So I'm not sure what the first partition on each drive does (the 300 Gb on the HD and the OEM Partition on the SSD. Nor do I know what Data (D:). I think the 2nd partition on the SSD is for some speedup of Windoze. I'm debating if I should shrink the OS (C:) drive to around 120 GB or so. Clear the Data (D:) and also use the whole SSD for Ubuntu. That would leave me 24 Gb for e.g. / on the SSD and some 320 Gb on the HD for /home and swap. Is this a reasonable setup? Do I need to configure fstab for the SSD differently to a HD?

Bad previous code. To fix or not to fix?

As a freelancer programmer I am often asked to edit part of an application source code in order to add functionalities, fix bugs etc. While I'm on my adventure journey to study the source to do what I'm asked correctly I run into code like: World::User* GetWorld() { map<DWORD,World*>::iterator it = mapWld.find( m_userWorldId ) if( it != mapWld.end() ) return &it->second; return NULL; } if( pUser->GetWorld()->GetId() == 250 ) If I investigate further I end up finding that the DWORD class member of User, userWorldId can be a value non-found in the map mapWld, which will lead to a casuality as also known as crash! The obviously valid way to do it is: World* pWorld = pUser->GetWorld(); if( pWorld && pWorld->GetId() == 250 )//... Sometimes when it's something just 'small' I end up sort of 'fixing' it. But sometimes when I'm on a 500 thousand line source code and this kind of code is everywhere there is no much can do. The question is if it's politically correct to fix some of these things. Think of it; You are not paid to fix it. Perhaps you think it's right, but it was necessarily done that way for some reason and you should not be messing with it. You do not have authorization, you do not own the source and none of the copyrights belong to you. You have authorization to edit issues accordingly to the owners but you're in a hurry, you have many other projects to do, it's the end of the month, you must pay the bills. Sincerely, I think of it as seeing an animal die from a disease in front of you, you have the cure in your hands but you do nothing. What is the best to do in this scenario?

How do I make cars on a one-dimensional track avoid collisions?

Using three.js, I use a simple spline to represent a road. Cars can only move forward on the spline. A car should be able to slow-down behind a slow moving car. I know how to calculate the distance between 2 cars, but how to calculate the proper speed in each game update? At the moment I simply do something like this: this.speed += (this.maxSpeed - this.speed) * 0.02; // linear interpolation to maxSpeed // the position on the spline (0.0 - 1.0) this.position += this.speed / this.road.spline.getLength(); This works. But how to implement the slow-down part? // transform from floats (0.0 - 1.0) into actual units var carInFrontPosition = carInFront.position * this.road.spline.getLength(); var myPosition = this.position * this.road.spline.getLength(); var distance = carInFrontPosition - myPosition; // WHAT TO DO HERE WITH THE DISTANCE? // HOW TO CALCULATE MY NEW SPEED? Obviously I have to somehow take current speed of the cars into account for calculation. Besides different maxSpeeds, I want each car to also have a different mass (causing it to accelerate slower/faster). But this mass has to be then also taken into account for braking (slowing down) so they don't crash into each other.

List of Asus U46 laptop troubles with Ubuntu 12.04

I've bought my ASUS U46 last february. I would like to make it work better with Ubuntu 12.04. Note taht I was forced to install Ubuntu 12.04 (before its publication) by ethernet. After a successfull install, several problem remain unfixed such as : USB 3 just does not work correctly. Can be fixed, but I didn't succeed yet. Nvidia Optimus (means that you can use Intel Chipset or the Nvidia GeForce) is possible to use thanks to BumbleBee project. It seems to work, though. But Nvidia tools still say they don't see any Nvidia driver installed. Battery duration can be optimised by using Laptop-tools. Any standby state lead to a X server crash. A good CTRL+ALT+F1 login and "shutdown -r" avoids a brutal power off. And since few weeks, I have some bug reports right after boot about "unattended-upgrade", and dpkg troubles after any apt-get install or update (Linux kernel doesn't compile anymore), ... Are there any ways to fix those troubles ? I would need a bit of assistance, in fact. Thank you for you help, Sincerly yours, Thibault

Observing MVC, can/should the Model be instantiated in the ViewController? Or where?

I'm writing an experimental iPhone app to learn about the MVC paradigm. I instantiate my Model class in the ViewController class. Is this stupid? I'm asking because storing the id of the Model class, and using it works where it's initialized, but referring to it later (in response to an interface action) crashes. Seemingly, the pointer address of my Model class instance changes, but how can that be? Weird internet connection issue on Ubuntu 14.04

I have an old Gateway PC with Windows 7 installed alongside the original (XP, I think?). A while ago my friend walked me through and helped me install Ubuntu 14.04 alongside the others because my Win7 was having issues with the display driver (it would unexpectedly crash while trying to watch videos on YouTube or other places). And I can't update it because the original computer settings are for XP or something, not Win7. :( We recently switched from AT&T U-Verse to Comcast. I would have stayed with Ethernet, but somehow the adapter I have wouldn't connect to Comcast's thing during their installation. So I was given a wireless USB adapter. It worked fine, up until the last few days. It's not a problem on Win7 (using it right now). Connection's strong, things load. On Ubuntu though, it SAYS it connects even before I login to my account, but when I login and bring up Firefox, it will load the homepage, and maybe one or two other pages I venture to before suddenly just... endlessly trying to load the page. I would normally go in and manually select 'disconnect' from the connections options menu to refresh/restart it like I've done a few times already. But lately, it won't respond, and then a little while later an error message comes up saying the request timed out/failed. Restarting my computer doesn't help it. The other weird thing is that I've noticed the signal (when it's actually working properly before the last few days) is comparitively weaker than when I'm on Win7. But my location doesn't change. It's the same computer, same connection.

Delete Ubuntu and Grub from PC (and BIOS unaccessible)

I've really done a mess while upgrading 12.04 to 12.10, or my PC did, or ubuntu did, I can't really tell. The situation now is I have a dual booting machine, Windows 7 and ubuntu 12.10 -When turning on the PC, I can't access boot options, I've tried every thing, esc, f1 f8, f10 (I have a Hp pavilion) but all I can see is a short-lasting screen with three lines reading something like "error:files not found" or "link not found". So the PC turns to the Grub loader screen. This is already a BIG problem. It means I can't change boot order, and I'm diperate, since it doensn't seem that repairing my operating systems will bring my BIOS back. -If I chose Ubuntu in grup, it loades but then frezes on the desktop, I may be having problem with unity3d, or compiz, which was reported to be crashing the first times I started ubuntu. Now, after turning off and on the pc several times, no crash is reported again. Ubuntu just load my background image and nothing else. Not the side menu, not the header, nothing. Althogh the system seems "functioning", when I press the power button on the PC, for example, the normal shutdown dialog window appears. -If I chose Windows, Grubs tells me that something is not found, and to press any key to continue; I do it and then Windows loads perfectly. What I now want to do is 1- use EasyBSD to change boot order and boot Windows partition first 2- delete the ubuntu partitions from within windows disk manager What I except happening is that My PC turns to, or near to factory booting settings: I press the power button and Windows loads without asking me nothing I have acess to all my hardisk from withing windows Is that what will really happen? Are there danger I'm not seeing? What I don't except happening is The BIOS access key return functioning How could I eventually solve this? I would like to reinstall Ubuntu, 32 bit version this time.

I'm new to Ubuntu. I've been using 12.04LTS for over a week now. For 3 days it was great but now I'm having a number of problems. I'm using an Acer Aspire one D255 it has a 250GB HDD and a 1GB Memory. My browser is Firefox. Pages freeze occasionally and I wait for over 10 minutes and have to use the computer's 'off' button. Pages crash. On facebook some pictures don't load and I have to close down and restart a couple of times. Scrolling can sometimes be very jerky. Downloading software has become a problem and I have a 'no entry' sign in the top taskbar. I've looked at this page for some help but the words used and the explanations are not helpful to someone like me who has little knowledge of this. Please - 'Ubuntu for dummies'. I'd like to continue using Ubuntu but am close to giving up.

trying to use mod_proxy with httpd and tomcat

I been trying to use mod_proxy with httpd and tomcat... I have on VirtualBox running Scientific Linux which has httpd and tomcat 6 on it.. I made two nodes of tomcat6. UPDATE FOR BI PUBLISHER ENTERPRISE 10.1.3.4.1 MARCH 2010

Latest roll up patch for 10.1.3.4.1 is now out in the wild. Yep, there are bug fixes but the guys have implemented some great enhancements. I'll be covering some of them over the coming weeks, from collapsing bookmarks in your PDFs to better MS AD support to 'true' Excel templates, yes you read that correctly! Patch is available from Oracle's support site. Just search for patch 9546699. Here's the contents and readme, apologies for the big list but at least you can search against it for a particular fix. Heap memory is a frequent customer topic. Here's the quick refresher, oriented towards AIX, but the principles apply to other unix implementations. 1. 32-bit processes have a maximum addressability of 4GB; usable application heap size of 2-3 GB. On AIX it is controlled by an environment variable: export LDR_CNTRL=....=MAXDATA=0x080000000 # 2GB ( The leading zero is deliberate, not required ) 1a. It is possible to get 3.25GB heap size for a 32-bit process using @DSA (Discontiguous Segment Allocation) export LDR_CNTRL=MAXDATA=0xd0000000@DSA # 3.25 GB 32-bit only One side-effect of using AIX segments "c" and "d" is that shared libraries will be loaded privately, and not shared. If you need the additional heap space, this is worth the trade-off. This option is frequently used for 32-bit java. 1b. 64-bit processes have no need for the @DSA option. 2. 64-bit processes can double the 32-bit heap size to 4GB using: export LDR_CNTRL=....=MAXDATA=0x100000000 # 1 with 8-zeros 2a. But this setting would place the same memory limitations on obiee as a 32-bit process 2b. The major benefit of 64-bit is to break the binds of 32-bit addressing. At a minimum, use 8GB export LDR_CNTRL=....=MAXDATA=0x200000000 # 2 with 8-zeros 2c. Many large customers are providing extra safety to their servers by using 16GB: export LDR_CNTRL=....=MAXDATA=0x400000000 # 4 with 8-zeros There is no performance penalty for providing virtual memory allocations larger than required by the application. - If the server only uses 2GB of space in 64-bit ... specifying 16GB just provides an upper bound cushion. When an unexpected user query causes a sudden memory surge, the extra memory keeps the server running. 3. The next benefit to 64-bit is that you can provide huge thread stack sizes for strange queries that might otherwise crash the server. nqsserver uses fast recursive algorithms to traverse complicated control structures. This means lots of thread space to hold the stack frames. 3a. Stack frames mostly contain register values; 64-bit registers are twice as large as 32-bit At a minimum you should quadruple the size of the server stack threads in NQSConfig.INI when migrating from 32- to 64-bit, to prevent a rogue query from crashing the server. Allocate more than is normally necessary for safety. 3b. There is no penalty for allocating more stack size than you need ... it is just virtual memory; no real resources are consumed until the extra space is needed. 3c. Increasing thread stack sizes may require the process heap size (MAXDATA) to be increased. Heap space is used for dynamic memory requests, and for thread stacks. No performance penalty to run with large heap and thread stack sizes. In a 32-bit world, this safety would require careful planning to avoid exceeding 2GM usable storage. 3d. Increasing the number of threads also may require additional heap storage. Most thread stack frames on obiee are allocated when the server is started, and the real memory usage increases as threads run work. Does 2.8GB sound like a lot of memory for an AIX application server? - I guess it is what you are accustomed to seeing from "grandpa's applications". - One of the primary design goals of obiee is to trade memory for services ( db, query caches, etc) - 2.8GB is still well under the 4GB heap size allocated with MAXDATA=0x100000000 - 2.8GB process size is also possible even on 32-bit Windows applications - It is not unusual to receive a sudden request for 30MB of contiguous storage on obiee.- This is not a memory leak; eventually the nqsserver storage will stabilize, but it may take days to do so. vmstat is the tool of choice to observe memory usage. On AIX vmstat will show something that may be startling to some people ... that available free memory ( the 2nd column ) is always trending toward zero ... no available free memory. Some customers have concluded that "nearly zero memory free" means it is time to upgrade the server with more real memory. After the upgrade, the server again shows very little free memory available. Should you be concerned about this? Many customers are !! Here is what is happening: - AIX filesystems are built on a paging model. If you read/write a filesystem block it is paged into memory ( no read/write system calls ) - This filesystem "page" has its own "backing store" on disk, the original filesystem block. When the system needs the real memory page holding the file block, there is no need to "page out". The page can be stolen immediately, because the original is still on disk in the filesystem. - The filesystem pages tend to collect ... every filesystem block that was ever seen since system boot is available in memory. If another application needs the file block, it is retrieved with no physical I/O. What happens if the system does need the memory ... to satisfy a 30MB heap request by nqsserver, for example? - Since the filesystem blocks have their own backing store ( not on a paging device ) the kernel can just steal any filesystem block ... on a least-recently-used basis to satisfy a new real memory request for "computation pages". No cause for alarm. vmstat is accurately displaying whether all filesystem blocks have been touched, and now reside in memory. Back to nqsserver: when should you be worried about its memory footprint? Answer: Almost never. Stop monitoring it ... stop fussing over it ... stop trying to optimize it. This is a production application, and nqsserver uses the memory it requires to accomplish the job, based on demand. C'mon ... never worry? I'm from New York ... worry is what we do best. Ok, here is the metric you should be watching, using vmstat: - Are you paging ... there are several columns of vmstat outputbash-2.04$ vmstat 3 3 System configuration: lcpu=4 mem=4096MB kthr memory page faults cpu ----- ------------ ------------------------ ------------ ----------- r b avm fre re pi po fr sr cy in sy cs us sy id wa 0 0 208492 2600 0 0 0 0 0 0 13 45 73 0 0 99 0 0 0 208492 2600 0 0 0 0 0 0 9 12 77 0 0 99 0 0 0 208492 2600 0 0 0 0 0 0 9 40 86 0 0 99 0 avm is the "available free memory" indicator that trends toward zerore is "re-page". The kernel steals a real memory page for one process; immediately repages back to original processpi "page in". A process memory page previously paged out, now paged back in because the process needs itpo "page out" A process memory block was paged out, because it was needed by some other process Light paging activity ( re, pi, po ) is not a concern for worry. Processes get started, need some memory, go away. Sustained paging activity is cause for concern. obiee users are having a terrible day if these counters are always changing. Hang on ... if nqsserver needs that memory and I reduce MAXDATA to keep the process under control, won't the nqsserver process crash when the memory is needed? Yes it will. It means that nqsserver is configured to require too much memory and there are lots of options to reduce the real memory requirement. - number of threads - size of query cache - size of sort But I need nqsserver to keep running. Real memory is over-committed. Many things can cause this:- running all application processes on a single server ... DB server, web servers, WebLogic/WebSphere, sawserver, nqsserver, etc. You could move some of those to another host machine and communicate over the network The need for real memory doesn't go away, it's just distributed to other host machines. - AIX LPAR is configured with too little memory. The AIX admin needs to provide more real memory to the LPAR running obiee. - More memory to this LPAR affects other partitions. Then it's time to visit your friendly IBM rep and buy more memory.
