Sparse matrices / arrays in Java

I'm working on a project, written in Java, which requires that I build a very large 2-D sparse array. Very sparse, if that makes a difference. Anyway: the most crucial aspect for this application is efficency in terms of time (assume loads of memory, though not nearly so unlimited as to allow me to use a standard 2-D array -- the key range is in the billions in both dimensions). Out of the kajillion cells in the array, there will be several hundred thousand cells which contain an object. I need to be able to modify cell contents VERY quickly. Anyway: Does anyone know a particularly good library for this purpose? It would have to be Berkeley, LGPL or similar license (no GPL, as the product can't be entirely open-sourced). Or if there's just a very simple way to make a homebrew sparse array object, that'd be fine too. I'm considering MTJ, but haven't heard any opinions on its quality. Thanks!! -Dan

Double split in C

Hi again dear community! OK. For example I have this line in my txt file: 1|1,12;7,19;6,4;8,19;2,2 . As you can see, it has 2 parts, separated by "|". I have no problems getting both parts, and separating second part ( 1,12;7,19;6,4;8,19;2,2 ) using ";" separator. BUT I do have problems with separating further by "," to get first and second number of each set. This is my current code: result = strtok(result, ";"); while(result != NULL ) { printf("%s\n", result); result = strtok(NULL, ";"); } It outputs me: 1,12 7,19 6,4 8,19 2,2 OK, great. But when I try to 'strtok' (I'm using this method for splitting) like this: result = strtok(result, ";"); while(result != NULL ) { //printf("%s\n", result); help = strtok(result, ","); while(help != NULL) { printf("<%s>", help); help = strtok(NULL, ","); } result = strtok(NULL, ";"); } I only get "<1,<12" like there is only one set in this set of numbers. I dont understand where are the rest of the numbers. Instead, output should be: <1,<12,<7,<19,<6,<4,<8,<19,<2,<2. Could someone please give a solution, how to get EACH number of each set this set of numbers. Maybe there are other methods or I'm doing something wrong :) Thank you! Best Regards, Dmitri

Hello, I've got a Problem with ArrayList. I need it to store a result. Because I want to start with element n I tryed to give the ArrayList a capacity with ensureCapacity(n+1) to use set(n,x) but I get an IndexOutOfBoundsException. I tryed to store n add(x) before the use of set and this works. So I'd like to know why it doesn't work on my way and how to solve this because put n times a add(x) isn't a good style ;-) Best regards, Sebastian

iPhone Orientation Relayout From Single Column to Double Column

I am trying to create a UIView in Interface Builder that shows to the user two boxes containing some text. This UIView should support both landscape and portrait modes. When in portrait orientation, the two boxes should be centered horizontally and be under each other. Like in the picture below: But when in landscape orientation, it should show the two boxes centered vertically and by side by side. Like in the picture below: Is this possible using only the autosizing options (or any other IB options), or do I have to relayout the view in code on orientation change events? I would prefer using only IB. I tried locking the top and left margins of the top box and locking the bottom and right margins of the bottom box. But the problem is that for it to work I also need to shrink the two boxes as one changes from portrait to landscape, because otherwise they would overlap.

Search algorithm for a sorted double linked list

As a learning excercise, I've just had an attempt at implementing my own 'merge sort' algorithm. I did this on an std::list, which apparently already had the functions sort() and merge() built in. However, I'm planning on moving this over to a linked list of my own making, so the implementation is not particuarly important. The problem lies with the fact that a std::list doesnt have facilities for accessing random nodes, only accessing the front/back and stepping through. I was originally planning on somehow performing a simple binary search through this list, and finding my answer in a few steps. The fact that there are already built in functions in an std::list for performing these kinds of ordering leads me to believe that there is an equally easy way to access the list in the way I want. PHP Stop Word List

I'm playing about with a stop words within my code I have an array full of words that I'd like to check, and an array of words I want to check against. At the moment I'm looping through the array one at at a time and removing the word if its in_array vs the stop word list but I wonder if there's a better way of doing it, I've looked at array_diff and such however if I have multiple stop words in the first array, array_diff only appears to remove the first occurrence. The focus is on speed and memory usage but speed more so. Thanks

LinqToSQL Double Insert issue

I have a WCF service with an object structure similar to this: public class MyClass { public List<MySubItem> SubItems { get; set; } } public class MySubItem { public List<MySubSubItem> SubSubItems { get; set; } } public class MySubSubItem { public string DataValue { get; set; } } public class MyClassDAL { public void InsertMyClass(MyClass myClass) { ctx.MyClasses.InsertOnSubmit(myClass); ctx.SubmitChanges(); } } Sometimes my client will call in with a MyClass that submits only half of the values that it has in the list SubSubItems. Later it calls the insert with the rest of the list. The problem is that when it does this I get a Primary Key violation. The reason is that it is trying to insert the MySubItem again (because there are more items in the SubSubItems owned by the same MySubItem object). How do I deal with this? Do I just call an Update? Do I have to try to separate them out (updates from inserts)? SQL Server 2008 has a really cool Merge functionally. Is there some way to access that from LinqToSQL?

Reading string value from Excel with HSSF but it's double

Hi, I'm using HSSF-POI for reading excel data. The problem is I have values in a cell that look like a number but really are strings. If I look at the format cell in Excel, it says the type is "text". Still the HSSF Cell thinks it's numeric. How can I get the value as a string? If I try to use cell.getRichStringValue, I get exception; if cell.toString, it's not the exact same value as in Excel sheet. Sorting Arrays by More the One Value, and Prioritizing the Sort based on Column data.

I'm looking for a way to sort an array (we call this a row), with an array of values (that I'll call columns). Each row has columns that must be sorted based on the priority of: timetime, lapcount & timestamp. Each column cotains this information: split1, split2, split3, laptime, lapcount, timestamp. laptime if in hundredths of a second. (1:23.45 or 1 Minute, 23 Seconds & 45 Hundredths is 8345.) Lapcount is a simple unsigned tiny int, or unsigned char. timestamp is unix epoch. The lowest laptime should be at the get a better standing in this sort. Should two peoples laptimes equal, then timestamp will be used to give the better standing in this sort. Should two peoples timestamp equal, then the person with less of a lapcount get's the better standing in this sort. By better standing, I mean closer to the top of the array, closer to the index of zero where it a numerical array. I think the array sorting functions built into php can do this with a callback, I was wondering what the best approch was for a weighted sort like this would be.

Komodo Double Indentation with Tab

In Komodo Edit, if I name the file *.django.html it gives me django syntax highlighting BUT it also indents with a tab character (8 spaces) instead of giving me the usual 4 space indent. How can I fix this? I've tried changing the value in Edit Preferences Editor Indentation Language Settings, but that seems to have no effect on it. The indentation works as normal (4 spaces) if I'm using any other extension (.py, .html, etc.). Ideas?

I've got an assignment I can't figure out, any pointers will be much appreciated, it goes like so: There's a series of light bulbs represented as an array of true/false, there's a switch for every light bulb, by clicking it for any light bulb, you toggle it as well as 2 adjacent ones (1 from left & another 1 from right; if clicked switch's bulb on edge -- only 1 adjacent toggled of course). What is needed to accomplish is a method that accepts an array of a series of turned on/off light bulbs and another one representing another state of supposedly the 1st array after some switches have been clicked..! So recursion must be used to find out whether there's a combination of switch clicks that will transform array 1 to array 2. Here's the signature of the method: public static boolean disco(boolean[] init, boolean[] target) Will return true if array init can be transformed to target, false otherwise. Method must be static and not use any other static and global variables, only local. Example: boolean[] init = {true, false, true, false, true, false}; boolean[] target = {false, true, false, true, false, true}; For above 2 arrays, disco(init, target) will return true because toggling the 1st and 4th bulbs would yield the target state (remember adjacent bulbs being toggled as well). Issue with javascript array object

I have the below JSON response. PHP Hashtable array optimisation.

I made a PHP app which was taking about ~0.0070sec for execution. Now, I added a hashtable array with about 2000 values. Suddenly the time for execution has gone up to ~0.0700 secs. Almost 10 times the previous value. I tried commenting out the part where I was searching inside the hashtable array (but array was still left defined). Still, the execution time remains about ~0.0500secs. Array is something like: $subjectinfo = array( 'TPT753' => 'Industrial Training', 'TPT801' => 'High Polymeric Engineering', 'TPT802' => 'Corrosion Engineering', 'TPT803' => 'Decorative ,Industrial And High Performance Coatings', 'TPT851' => 'Project'); Is there any way to optimize this part? I cannot use Database as I am running this app on Google app engine which is still not supporting JDO database for php.
