• File access with hostname or ip only - no domain?

  It seems likely that this is an obvious question, but I'm having trouble tracking down any useful information. Normally when accessing files in a particular directory on a server, I'm able to create a virtual host, assign a domain, root directory location, etc -- however am in a situation where I have server space and need to access files with only a hostname. Is this possible? For example, let's say the hostname is 123hostname.com, and the file I want access to is in /home/sub-directory/filename.php. How do I get at it via a browser? I've tried: http://123hostname.com/home/sub-directory/filename.php ...and some other variations on that theme (that I can't post because new users are restricted to one link in messages). But generally stuck. Any help -- even if it's just to let me know that this isn't possible without some additional configuration -- would be great. Thank you!

• How can Firefox masquerade as Chrome?

  I have access to Firefox but not Chrome under XP. I would like extensions to make it more Chrome-like: in particular, 1: A tabbed theme that works like Chrome. 2: One address/search bar that will go to URLs and submit search queries appropriately. (I have already installed "Download Statusbar.") I am looking on a relatively superficial level; I'm not hoping to simulate V8 or Chrome's screaming render times. But I would like a setup that minimally breaks the illusion for someone accustomed to Chrome.

• Modifying %HOME% on Emacs 24.3 on Windows causes .emacs to not be found

  In order for magit to read my git settings on Emacs 24.3.1 for Windows, I added the following configuration from a stack overflow post: (when (string-equal system-type "windows-nt") (setenv "HOME" (concat (getenv "HOMEDRIVE") (getenv "HOMEPATH"))) Interestingly, after this is added to my .emacs, Emacs thinks .emacs doesn't exist anymore. If I do M-x cd to ~ and then do M-x pwd it says ~ is located at C:\Users\Me\AppData\Roaming. It appears that emacs is reading the .emacs settings file because it loads my custom theme. However, if I try to find ~/.emacs Emacs doesn't see it. The file has all permissions on the file system for any user.

• Drupal + Lighttpd: enabling clean urls (rewriting)

  I'm emulating Ubuntu on my mac, and I use it as a server. I've installed lighttpd + Drupal and the following configuration section requires a domain name in order to make clean urls to work. • Using gnome-do as a dock

  Hello, I've recently removed the bottom toolbar, in Ubuntu, and replaced it with gnome-do, using the "Docky" theme. Things looks nice, but I have a couple of questions : The dock doesn't differentiate between a shortcut and the application itself when launched. What if I want to launch more than one time that app ? (ie. the console). The dock shows all apps launched, not just the apps launched on that particular desktop. Can I change this behavior ? • Change the white background in webpages to another color

  I'm currently using a dark theme in firefox. It looks really nice, but many webpages use a plain white background. The resulting contrast is a little unpleasant and sometimes hurts the eye when I switch from a dark tab to a white tab. Is there a way to make firefox replace white backgrouns everywhere with some other color (light gray, for instance)? It could be a Stylish script, a userChrome.css hack, or anything that works (preferably as light as possible). To make myself clear: after I achieve my objective, the background color whenever I visit the super-user site should be light-grey instead of white, and the same should happen to any other site with a white background (google sites, tech crunch, etc). Is there a way to do that?

• Wget site mirror, links with rel="<content>" not followed

  Whilst creating a site mirror using wget 1.12 on Ubuntu links with a rel attribute set are not downloaded: <a href="link" rel="tag">text</a> Rel="tag" is a microformat (By adding rel="tag" to a hyperlink, a page indicates that the destination of that hyperlink is an author-designated "tag" (or keyword/subject) for the current page). My WordPress theme uses this for link to tags, so 99% of the site is ignored. Edit: it turns out all my permalinks use rel="bookmark" and are skipped as well. I'm using the following wget command (this ignores robots.txt and also follows nofollow links): wget -mkp -e robots=off http://site How do I make wget follow links with rel set?

• Using "mv" or "ditto" to merge folders in OS X

  Used to the Windows way of doing I just found out OS X has no merge function – moving means replacing the folder. While this does make sense, I miss merging! I've two Wordpress directories, 1 contains default source and 2 contains worked version with plugins custom theme etc. I want to see difference between this two, so I'm putting it on SVN. Folder 1 is already up, now in theory I should simply merge contents of 2 with 1 by replacing everything with contents of 2 but leaving hidden SVN files untouched. Unfortunately OS X, when moving, replaces the folder so that my SVN client goes crazy and doesn't understand folder structure anymore. So, I believe my options are mv and ditto, but which one would you use in my situation and how? sudo mv wordpress /Documents/svn/wwwholiday/trunk/wordpress I want mv to overwrite everything it finds, but leave alone whatever is already inside folder 1 and has no duplicate in folder 2.

• Firefox: tabs containing a single image sometimes show generic icon instead of thumbnail

  My version of Firefox is 3.5.9, but I've had this issue since single-image tabs started showing a thumbnail of the contained image. Typically, a tab containing a single image will use a thumbnail of the image as the icon before the tab title. Sometimes, though, this icon will be the generic “shaded sphere on blank page” (or perhaps whatever your theme defaults to). I'm guessing this happens whenever height or width is larger than 1024, but I seem to recall (perhaps erroneously) exceptions to this rule. Anyway, hopefully someone will know the definite answer to: Why does this happen? We have two solutions: Use phpsass which is a php script(but it has some bugs) Use Ruby Compiler which most of wordpress plugins use this I noticed that plugins which use Ruby need to have PHP proc_open function enabled on server. My question is what are Pros and Cons of using Ruby compiler on servers? and are most of shared web hosts support Ruby and have PHP proc_open function enabled by default?

  Is drupal going to improve the following features ? 1) multi-line description for CCK fields such as images (at the moment I can only write in a line but a text-area would be better 2) thumbnails upload for CCK Video fields (so I can upload a thumbnails for each video if I cannot install ffmpeg on the server) 3) merge CCK Images and Videos in a single group. So my customer can order them in the same list by dragging and dropping them, and in my front-end I have them ordered in the same list. This would be very useful for me. Do you know if I can get some of theme with some modules maybe ? thanks

  In Windows 7, the window title's color (by default black, to see the title in the title bar fire up Windows Media Player for example) is stored in [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\Colors] TitleText value. This is not the case in Windows 8, since this value is only used when using high contrast theme. It looks like noone has come up with a way to change this color yet, so my question is, where to look? What tools can I use to see dependencies, what could be the way to find this value (I rightfully hope it's not a constant in code).

• How can I change a specific website's style?

  I have a specific website I often use (specifically, http://www.pygame.org/), which has an awful color scheme. I would like to change the color scheme of the site, but I haven't been able to find a good tool for the job. Some basic requirements: It should not be universal to all websites, or affect other websites. I want this to be semi-automatic. I don't want to have to re-define the theme for each page of the site. I want to continue to access the site online (I don't want a local copy of the entire site) Not OS-specific (browser-specific is okay) I am currently using Firefox, but I am also happy with Chrome. There may be some limitations on what is able to be done automatically, as the CSS seems to be embedded in the HTML (and some also in the HTML tags). I would like to remove as much of the green as possible. Is there an existing extension/add-on that does this?

• 7.0.1 and Photoshop openGL requirements

  Hi, I'm running Workstation 7.0.1 on a 64-bit Linux host, with a Vista guest, and the Aero theme works a treat - full marks for getting that working! However, when running Photoshop there are some operations (like interactive image rotation) that seem to require graphics support that VMWare doesn't have - attempting to do these operations returns an error that the functionality "only works with OpenGL enabled windows". It seems that it needs OpenGL 2.0 and Shader Model 3.0 which I gather are supported under Workstation 7 - do I need to put in additional settings of some kind? I've updated to the right version of VMWare Tools, and the video driver is listed as "VMWare SVGA 3D (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM)". I see that in 6.5 there was an option to switch between the beta WDDM driver and the SVGAII driver, but I assume the features of both of these would have been merged into the standard driver in 7.0? I would like to copy that to another location so the result is a folder with the same file and folder structure, but with all files in 8.3 format. How to do it? PS: Well, some files have extensions with more than 3 characters (e.x. home.sh3d, windows.theme etc.), so when I say about transforming all filenames to 8.3 I would like to say about transforming them to a 8.X format (i.e., to do not change extensions).

• Altering the Windows 7 grouping thumbnail preview

  I like the windows 7 grouping behaviour for multiple similar windows, except when I have multiple Explorer windows open. In this case, showing thumbnails of each open explorer window is next to useless, and I would like to know how to either: Disable thumbnail display completely (but preserve the grouping behaviour) Disable thumbnail display for a subset of programs (all explorer.exe instances) Change the number of similar programs that are open before the grouping behaviour falls back on a more sensible text preview when hovering over the taskbar icon (currently 14 or over) I don't particularly want to disable any other features of windows to get this behaviour, so disabling the theme compleletely isn't what I want to do. I definitely want to keep the grouping behaviour. Its just those thumbnail previews I would like to alter. • Permission denied in Ubuntu

  I have a file which includes new icons for my system. Anyway, How can I change my old icons down with new ones? The name of the new icon pack is "myFAV-TUX" and it's sitting on my desktop. The problem is, I can't copy them into the usr/share/icons/ folder. It says, permission denied. I also tried ls -l .... But i couldn't do it. How can I change the icon theme? Please help.

• When should I upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)? [closed]

  I'm a web developer for a small non-IT firm. When 9.10 came out, I was using it with no adverse effects from about a month before release (iirc, first beta), initially as an upgrade but as a clean install later to ensure my system would be consistent with most other 9.10 systems. The last alpha of 10.04 came out last week, with another 2 weeks before beta. I'm quite eager to do it today, but obviously the usual "not for production systems" notice is still in place. When should I upgrade? Do I need to worry about software installed from source? (./configure, make, make install etc) Is the attraction of a non-brown theme really this tempting for you?

• I can't see wordpress .php file?

  I installed WAMP server on win xp - it works. I installed Wordpress 3.4.2 into www.wordpress - no problem. In Dreamweaver CS5 I created a site with www.wordpress as root folder, and assigned a local test server - ok. In Dreamweaver, I opened twentyten theme - index.php - and pressed F12 to see the page in Firefox - and got: Fatal error: Call to undefined function get_header()... - on line 16 This is a completely new and clear wordpress installation. Why is the function (get_header) - undefined? To check the server I copied another .php file into the same folder - F12 - it works.

• Firefox 11 Bookmarks Toolbar too Tall

  After updating to Firefox 11, my Bookmarks Toolbar is unpleasantly tall. This link implies that it's due to the presence of separators in my toolbar. I tried adding the suggested CSS in post 5 to my userChrome.css file, but this did nothing. I have also tried #PersonalToolbar {max-height:10px !important;} But this simply truncates the bottom of the toolbar. Does anyone know how to change the size of the bookmarks toolbar to match Firefox 10? More info: Here is a screenshot of my Bookmarks Toolbar. I'm using OSX 10.6.8 with the default theme. I have "View Toolbars Customize Use small icons" enabled. I'm also using the LiveClick 0.4.2.0 extension, but disabling it does not fix the issue.

• With Bash + iTerm2, how to name tabs?

  In iTerm2 (Build 1.0.0.20120203), I typically open several tabs, each of which has split panes , and is about one particular theme of work, for example revision control, coding, managing files, mysql terminal work. I typically need to switch between 5 or more tabs in my work flow. It is sometimes hard to remember or tell which is which by looking at the content of the screen. I'd like to name the tabs somehow, so I can quickly tell which is which by quickly glancing. Is this possible?

I can't imagine that's the way it's supposed to work. I want it to stay in the order I select. I have no add-ons installed that have anything to do with search engines, nor that add any toolbars. I am not using a customized theme. Apparently this problem is rare, as Googling [ "manage search engine list" ("order reverts" OR "order changes") ] return 0 results. Firefox 3.6.12; Windows XP Pro SP3.

• How to suspend and resume browser tab groups?

  Modern browsers such as Firefox and Chrome are able to shutdown and restore the same group of tabs they had before the next time you open them, and even sometimes remember additional tab state such as scroll position within the tab. I would like ideally to be able to select a group of tabs (about some coherent theme, perhaps) and save them away into some kind of "folder" that I could later open independently, without opening any other tabs. Obviously I can use bookmarks for this, but bookmarks are kind of old-fashioned. It would be excellent if it could also record forms that I had filled in but not submitted, scroll position, tab position within the tab group, and any other "dynamic" aspects of the current tab state.

  I am using Visual Stuido 2012 Integrated Shell with Team Explorer. I would like to change the default font color of the mapped and not mapped folders in the Source Control Explorer (in the treeview). I tried the Visual Studio Color Theme editor, but it seems like the font color of the Source Control Explorer and the Team Explorer can not be changed by it. I also looked at Tools|Options|Environment|Fonts and Color for a setting but did not find anything. Is it possible to change the font color? How?
