• Pros and cons of Localisation of technical words ?

  This question is directed to the non-english speaking people here. It is somewhat biased because SO is an "english-speaking" web forum, so... In the other hand, most developers would know english anyway... In your locale culture, are technical words translated into locale words ? For example, how "Design Pattern", or "Factory", or whatever are written/said in german, spanish, etc. etc. when used by IT? Are the english words prefered? The local translation? Do the two version (english/locale) are evenly used? Edit Could you write with your answer the locale translation of "Design Pattern"? In french, according to Wikipedia.fr, it is "Patron de conception", which translates back as "Model of Conceptualization" (I guess).

• How do I implement a Google Latitude check-in feature on Windows Mobile?

  I hope this is the correct forum. I wish to write a mobile application (MVC 4 mobile app) that extends Google Latitude for Windows Mobile 7 (or version 8 when launched in November). However, according to Google's own website (see http://www.google.com/mobile/latitude/), the check-in feature is not supported on Windows Mobile. So, how would I implement such a feature (not so interested in the UI here) using the technologies that I have mentioned? EDIT The implementation needs to store check-in data against a Google Latitude account.

• MongoDB: embedding performance question

  I just started learning MongoDB, and I really like the idea of embedding collections instead of referencing them. MongoDB's documentation recommends to use embedding if performance is needed. I just thought about a simple forum model. Let's say, every board category has several boards, every board has several topics, and every topic has several messages. All of these collections are embedded. After some time the size of the board category will be huge. Way more than the 2MB limit. Does this mean that there's a flaw in this design?

• How do I prevent capistrano from overwriting files uploaded by users in their own folders?

  I'm using Capistrano and git to deploy a RoR app. I have a folder under which each user has their own folder. When a user uploads or saves a file, it is saved in their own folder. When I deploy new versions of the code to the server, the user files and folders are overwritten with what's on my dev machine. Is there a way to ignore some folders in capistrano, like we do in git? This post - http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/97539 - suggests using symlinks and storing the user files in a shared folder. But it's an old post, so I'm wondering if there is a better way to do it now. Also, does anyone know of any good screencasts/tutorials to recommend for using RoR+git+capistrano? Thanks.

• Java not working on MacOS X Leopard

  I'm running Leopard, xcode 3.1.3. When I type "java" at the command line I get this: dyld: could not load inserted library: /usr/lib/libSaturnFE.dylib Trace/BPT trap What did I do? I did do some profiling with Saturn a while back but I didn't know it was going to screw up my machine. I'm fairly sure it worked when I first installed xcode. I guess I could install a different Java SDK than the one that came with Xcode? I can't find an upgrade path for Xcode that doesn't require me to upgrade to Snow Leopard. I just don't feel like upgrading to Snow Leopard right now because I don't have good disk backups in place. edit: at least if anybody could point me to a resource or even a Mac forum where I could ask this question it would be really helpful.

• How to make drupal known submitting custom content

  Hi, I know this is not a drupal forum but, as I’m not getting any response there, I decided to give it a shot here. I’m creating a web site that accepts custom content from users. So, for that matter, this site has a form and a custom module. Instead of using admin theme, this form is placed inside custom template which is created to have a uniform look with the rest of the pages. As a result, creating form elements through hook_form is out of question. Here’s where my problems lie. As this form uses custom theme, I’m not sure as to what can I do to make drupal know that user is submitting new content data when the form is submitted? Would I need to use same query string that of content submission page of admin page like - ?q=node/add/page for action attribute of the html form? (OR) the only way is to map the url to my custom function and invoke some sort of hook inside of it? Thanks

  I am trying to replicate a forum function by getting the last reply of a post. For clarity, see PHPBB: there are four columns, and the last column is what I like to replicate. I have my tables created as such: discussion_id (primary key) user_id parent_id comment status pubdate I was thinking of creating a Link Table that would update for each time the post is replied to. The link table would be as follow: discussion_id (primary key) last_user_id last_user_update However, I am hoping that theres a advance query to achieve this method. That is, grabbing each Parent Discussion, and finding the last reply in each of those Parent Discussions. Am I right that there is such a query?

  I need to add one menu item in IE context menu. It is similar with Google customized context menu "Search Google for xxx" when you right click on IE. I did a research and found that overriding IDocHostUIHandler::ShowContextMenu in a IE BHO can customized IE context menu. The sample project can be found in Popup blocker project published in codeproject. It works well and is easy to implement. However this approach has a problem. The problem is it will conflict with other add-ons' context menu customization per MSDN. In MSDN Internet Explorer Center forum, there are some discussions about this topic. However there is not a proper implementation posted. If anybody has experience on this, please share your idea. Thanks!

Ever since I read that for loop works faster than foreach a long time ago I assumed it stood true for all collections, generic collection all arrays etc. I scoured google and found few articles but most of them are inconclusive (read comments on the articles) and open ended.   From managed code, how do I load a managed type from another assembly at runtime, assuming the calling code does not have a static reference to the assembly? To clarify, let's say I have class Lib in Lib.cs compiled into Lib.dll. I want to write a class Foo in a separate assembly called Foo.dll, that does not have a reference to Lib.dll statically, but instead loads Lib.dll and then reflects on for the presence of the class Lib and then calls a method on it. Sorry for such an obvious question on Reflection. I figure it'll take much lesser time to get the answer on a forum that to read a few articles.

  I've begun watching a series of first year lectures from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia, and I'm a bit perplexed by the instructors explanation of how an SRAM gate works. I realize this isn't exactly "programming-related" but since it comes from a series of lectures relating to computing and programming, I thought StackOverflow may be able to help (reddit failed me entirely). In this lecture beginning at around 32:12, Richard (the lecturer) tries to explain how a "latch gate" works within SRAM. Although his students seem to keep up, I feel I'm missing something crucial which is preventing the concept from really "clicking" in my brain.   specifically WM6x, winCE5x Now my current understanding from trawling the msdn etal is that the IMAPIAdviseSink::OnNotify callback can be made from any old thread; from (ce)mapi or perhaps even from a third-party service provider. Under WM6x, i cannot seem to coax an in-thread response by invoking HrThisThreadAdviseSink, since while this function is declared in mapiutil.h, a definition appears not to exist (in cemapi.lib or wherever??) ~But i notice that all the OnNotify callbacks i receive derive from windows messages that i am receiving on my thread (=looks to me like an in-thread implementation in any case under cemapi)... So, can anyone confirm that this is infact always the case -or am i just getting lucky right now? ah, i should add that my advise source is IMAPISession::Advise erm i should also say that i might have cross-posted this on the msdn forum -but they're mostly numptys over there,,

• What is the correct way to bootstrap Drupal with Kohana 3?

  Hi, I am trying to implement single sign on between an existing Drupal site a Kohana 3 based webapp. Ideally I would like to load Drupal's session information into $GLOBALS using the bootstap: require_once('../includes/bootstrap.inc'); drupal_bootstrap(DRUPAL_BOOTSTRAP_SESSION); A post on the Kohana forum suggested that this should be placed in Kohana's index.php, but didn't say where. I've tried right at the start, and just before Kohana's own bootstrap, but both result in a White Screen of Death. Changing the bootstrap level to DRUPAL_BOOTSTRAP_CONFIGURATION works, but the session data isn't loaded. Any bootstrap level above DRUPAL_BOOTSTRAP_ACCESS results in a WSOD. If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it!

  My project deals with both Web app and Mobile app. So before we can use Linkedin API's into our project we need to register our app with Linkedin according to this Quick Start. But for my situation where i use Linkedin API's for both web and mobile, Do i need to register two application with Linkedin. Or is there any other way to register a single application and use the same for both web and mobile? In the registration page i don't see any distinction for Web and Mobile, unlike facebook where a single application registered can be used for both web and mobile app. If anyone could point me to appropriate docs or pointers, it would be really helpful.   I am a long time agile advocated but one of the things that bothers me about Agile is that a lot of agile practitioners, especially the younger ones, have thrown out or are missing a whole lot of good (non Scrum, non XP) practices. Alistair Cockburn's style of writing Use Cases springs to mind; orthogonal arrays (pairwise testing) is another. I hope this is an okay forum to ask this, but since I read mostly Agile related books and articles and work with mostly Agile folk ... is there anything I'm missing? Thanks for all your help. • What's the best way to set cursor/caret position?

  If I'm inserting content into a textarea that TinyMCE has co-opted, what's the best way to set the position of the cursor/caret? I'm using tinyMCE.execCommand("mceInsertRawHTML", false, content); to insert the content, and I'd like set the cursor position to the end of the content. Both document.selection and myField.selectionStart won't work for this, and I feel as though this is going to be supported by TinyMCE (through something I can't find on their forum) or it's going to be a really ugly hack. Later: It gets better; I just figured out that, when you load TinyMCE in WordPress, it loads the entire editor in an embedded iframe. Later (2): I can use document.getElementById('content_ifr').contentDocument.getSelection(); to get the selection as a string, but not a Selection Object that I can use getRangeAt(0) on. Making progress little by little.
