• Still no keyboard after uninstalling Ubuntu

  I installed Ubuntu 11.04 for the first time yesterday. After rebooting for the first time, I couldn't log in because I couldn't type anything using the keyboard. After rebooting, the keyboard failed completely; I can only automatically boot into Windows since I can't choose Ubuntu. Then the problem got worse. I had to use On-Screen keyboard to log in into Windows. Still no keyboard. When I rebooted, my laptop couldn't reboot at all! I had to hard reboot. I decided to uninstall the Ubuntu, using the Add/Remove program in the Control Panel. I uninstalled it successfully. My laptop automatically boots into Windows without Ubuntu option. However, I still don't have the keyboard! Please help me. Acer Aspire 4935 Windows 7 Ultimate Thanks.

• Bug in firefox address bar autocomplete running on KDE

  Has anyone experienced this graphical glitch when typing in Firefox address bar? The drop-down list is not drawn correctly, with some "blocks" missing. After typing more letters or hovering the mouse cursor, the list redraws itself and becomes complete. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, Firefox 13.0.1 and this only happens in KDE (tested with 4.8.2, 4.8.3 and 4.8.4). It does not happen in Unity or Xfce with the same user profile. If I go to the KDE control panel and disable the Fade effect, the bug starts to happen to almost every menu in the system, including, the taskbar window previews. Enabling the “Fade” effect corrects the bug everywhere except in Firefox. I have an Nvidia card and I am using the proprietary driver (current, not current-updates -- not sure about the difference), but the linked question on an Arch Linux forum says this happen with the open source driver and with other cards too. Does anyone have an idea for a solution?

• Problem with Numlock light and remapping keyboard

  I upgraded to Ubuntu 13.10. And there are two problem: Numlock is on. But after I press Ctrl+Space (hotkey for IBus, (default in 13.10 is Super+Space)), Numlock is off and I must press Numlock button twice to enable Numlock. About remapping keyboard, because my keyboard have some broken key, so I am using xmodmap to remap my keyboard (config file for xmodmap is $HOME/.xmodmap). But when I switch keyboard layout (I mentioned above), everything changed to default, and I must run xmodmap .xmodmap to remap keyboard again. When using Ubuntu 13.04, everything is good. How to solve my problems? UPDATE: 1. I am using two keyboard layout: English (US) and Unikey (from ibus-unikey package). 2. If I change key board layout using menu on Unity panel, no first problem.

• FTP GoDaddy Issues

  Is there a special port for godaddy servers? Do I have to call them to enable ftp support? I can login w the username and password on the control panel on godaddy.com but not on ftp. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I tried using Filezilla and CuteFTP Pro using port 21 but w/ no luck. Go Daddy's Instructions are: 1.FTP Address or Hostname: Your Domain Name 2.FTP Username & Password: You selected both of these during account creation 3.Start Directory: You should leave this blank or include a single forward slash (i.e. /) 4.FTP Port: You should enter Standard, or 21. •FTP Client. • ibus symbol disappears for Japanese language selection

  Similar to this post No ibus icon in Kubuntu, I have trouble with the ibus icon in Ubuntu 12.04. Each time an update is installed, the language selector for Japanese disappears from the top panel. I need to uninstall and install Japanese again, then reboot, to make the symbol appear again. In this thread No iBus icon in Kubuntu 12.04 the suggestion was to install the Japanese Version of Ubuntu, but is it really true that one has to stick to a special version of Ubuntu to get this problem solved? If so, how can I transfer the settings easily from the current version to the Japanese one?

• How to set-up DSL dialer for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  I have just installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and I'm unable to get my DSL dialer working properly. To set this up in Windows 7 I had to do following: Control Panel --- Network and Intertnet Network and sharing center --- Setup a new network or connection Connect to the internet --- Broadband PPPoE Enter username and Password.. CLick 'Connect' and Done. I am doing following steps in Ubuntu with no luck: Click on 'Two Arrows' (i don't know what they are called) on upper right corner. Configure VPN --- DSL tab --- Add Then I entered username, password, MAC address and Clone MAC address (copied from Auto Ethernet). Save The same set up used to work with Ubuntu 10.10 but it is not working here. Now whenever I click on DSL Connection 1 to connect dialer 'Auto Ethernet' gets disconneted and I end up with no Internet connection. I am new to Ubuntu, Please suggest some easy steps. I have installed ubuntu alongside windows. And dialer works fine in Windows environment, i am writing this in Windows .

• How to control CPU frequency

  I am using CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor 2.30.0 on the panel to show and control CPU frequency. My CPU frequency by default will change according to load. But I want to make CPU work at the lowest level and so I choose 800 MHz in CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor. After a few seconds, however, it automatically changes back to Powersave or Performance mode which has automatic adjustment to CPU frequency. I was wondering how to actually make CPU work at the lowest level? Thanks!

• Create Advanced Panoramas with Microsoft Image Composite Editor

  Do you enjoy making panoramas with your pictures, but want more features than tools like Live Photo Gallery offer?  Here’s how you can create amazing panoramas for free with the Microsoft Image Composite Editor. Yesterday we took a look at creating panoramic photos in Windows Live Photo Gallery. Today we take a look at a free tool from Microsoft that will give you more advanced features to create your own masterpiece. Getting Started Download Microsoft Image Composite Editor from Microsoft Research (link below), and install as normal.  Note that there are separate version for 32 & 64-bit editions of Windows, so make sure to download the correct one for your computer. Once it’s installed, you can proceed to create awesome panoramas and extremely large image combinations with it.  Microsoft Image Composite Editor integrates with Live Photo Gallery, so you can create more advanced panoramic pictures directly.  Select the pictures you want to combine, click Extras in the menu bar, and select Create Image Composite. You can also create a photo stitch directly from Explorer.  Select the pictures you want to combine, right-click, and select Stitch Images… Or, simply launch the Image Composite Editor itself and drag your pictures into its editor.  Either way you start a image composition, the program will automatically analyze and combine your images.  This application is optimized for multiple cores, and we found it much faster than other panorama tools such as Live Photo Gallery. Within seconds, you’ll see your panorama in the top preview pane. From the bottom of the window, you can choose a different camera motion which will change how the program stitches the pictures together.  You can also quickly crop the picture to the size you want, or use Automatic Crop to have the program select the maximum area with a continuous picture.   Here’s how our panorama looked when we switched the Camera Motion to Planar Motion 2. But, the real tweaking comes in when you adjust the panorama’s projection and orientation.  Click the box button at the top to change these settings. The panorama is now overlaid with a grid, and you can drag the corners and edges of the panorama to change its shape. Or, from the Projection button at the top, you can choose different projection modes. Here we’ve chosen Cylinder (Vertical), which entirely removed the warp on the walls in the image.  You can pan around the image, and get the part you find most important in the center.  Click the Apply button on the top when you’re finished making changes, or click Revert if you want to switch to the default view settings. Once you’ve finished your masterpiece, you can export it easily to common photo formats from the Export panel on the bottom.  You can choose to scale the image or set it to a maximum width and height as well.  Click Export to disk to save the photo to your computer, or select Publish to Photosynth to post your panorama online. Alternately, from the File menu you can choose to save the panorama as .spj file.  This preserves all of your settings in the Image Composite Editor so you can edit it more in the future if you wish.   Conclusion Whether you’re trying to capture the inside of a building or a tall tree, the extra tools in Microsoft Image Composite Editor let you make nicer panoramas than you ever thought possible.  We found the final results surprisingly accurate to the real buildings and objects, especially after tweaking the projection modes.  This tool can be both fun and useful, so give it a try and let us know what you’ve found it useful for. • Sound muted in milliseconds after unmute

  I installed Ubuntu 11.10 recently, and sound doesn't work properly. Whenever I try to play a sound (from any software), the sound is muted, and when I unmute it, it stats there for a fraction of second and mutes itself. After trying various things, I plugged in a headphone in the front microphone jack of my computer, and magecally, the sound started to come out from my speakers (Which are connected to the line-out in the rear panel). I have analog stereo speakers. The sound card (intel HDA as shown in alsamixer) is detected properly. I have ecs G41T-M7 motherboard and nVidia GT240 (with graphics drivers installed)

• Pidgin doesn't show buddy list?

  I like to use pidgin instead of Empathy because I'm used to it, and because I have to venture into windows for more development than I would prefer. In Ubuntu 11.10, I can't find any way to get to the buddy list. It opens, and just sits there in the messenger panel tray thing. From its previous behavior, I believe Pidgin usually starts up minimized-- you have to click on its system tray to show the buddy list. The messenger applet does not seem to support this functionality. Is this a bug, or am I just missing something obvious?

• Synaptic opens with "starting without Administrative privileges

  When I try to open Synaptic from the AWN Cardapio applet menu it gives me the 'starting without administrative privileges' message and then I can't install anything. I can run sudo synaptic and it works fine, but how can I get it to just prompt me for my password like it used to? I don't like having to open terminal just to open synaptic. Any ideas? im using AWN Cardapio Applet and not the GNOME panel classic menu, so i can't just change the command in the menu, like in the classic one.

• Custom Xsession with Gnome visuals

  I'm trying to create a kiosk PC only for web browsing using this tutorial as a reference (only difference - I'm using Firefox instead of Chromium) It is working correctly in principle (only FF window opens when I log in using the Kiosk session) but it looks, well, super ugly. The scrollbar and right-click context menus look like from the 1990s - gray and boxy. How could I modify the session to get Gnome-like scrollbars/menus without the whole Gnome desktop (top/bottom panel etc)? • Nvidia G96 [GeForce 9400 GT] and application graphic issues

  I've got a quite old NVIDIA graphic card and I with installed restricted drivers from Settings panel (as also shown in this thread). ? ~ lspci 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G96 [GeForce 9400 GT] (rev a1) I tried a lot of them: version 173-update, current, beta, but the only one that can run unity-2d it's current-update. That's Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 64bit. However... Unity crashes, sometimes windows border disappear, Java Virtual Machine doesn't works, font rendering it's slow and so on. How can I solve this? Some suggestions? Thanks!

• SOA Suite 11g Dynamic Payload Testing with soapUI Free Edition

  Overview Many web service developers use soapUI for various tests like: smoke test, unit test, and load testing because you can get a free edition that is fairly robust. However, if you need to venture into more complex testing that requires a dynamic payload, then the free edition doesn't necessarily make it easy. This feature does exist in soapUI, but for obvious reasons it is in the Pro version. In this blog I will show you how to use soapUI free edition for dynamic payloads in a simplified example. Hopefully this will open the doors for you to expand into more complex scenarios. The following assumes that you have a working knowledge of soapUI and will not go into concepts like setting up a project etc. For the basics, please review the documentation for soapUI: http://www.soapui.org/Getting-Started/. Additionally, we will be using asynchronous web services and you can review the setup for this in my blog: SOA Suite 11g Asynchronous Testing with soapUI. Features in soapUI Free Edition Relating to this Topic The soapUI test tool provides a very feature rich environment that can do many things provided you are willing to go beyond point and click. For this example, we will be leveraging just a couple features for our dynamic payload example: Test Case Properties Scripting with Groovy Basically, we will be using a property as a global variable and we will manipulate that property using a Groovy script. Setting Up Our Property Properties are available throughout soapUI and here is a snippet from the soapUI website defining the locations: Projects : for handling Project scope values, for example a subscription ID TestSuite : for handling TestSuite scoped values, can be seen as "arguments" to a TestSuite TestCases : for handling TestCase scoped values, can be seen as "arguments" to a TestCase Properties TestStep : for providing local values/state within a TestCase Local TestStep properties : several TestStep types maintain their own list of properties specific to their functionality : DataSource, DataSink, Run TestCase MockServices : for handling MockService scoped values/arguments MockResponses : for handling MockResponse scoped values Global Properties : for handling Global properties, optionally from an external source For our example, we will be defining a custom property in a TestCase called SimpleAsyncPayload. The property can be created in either the Custom Properties tab located at the bottom of the Navigator panel when the TestCase is selected in the Navigator or the Properties label in the TestCase editor: Navigator Panel TestCase Editor You will notice that I set a value of “0” for the custom property. For this simplified example, we will need to retrieve that value and manipulate it prior to making the web service request invocation. In order to accomplish this, we will need to get Groovy ;) Let's Get Groovy We will now add a new Groovy Script step to the TestCase called Manipulate Payload: TestCase Editor > Append Step > Groovy Script Once we have added the Groovy Script step to our TestCase, we can open the Groovy Script editor to add the code to: Get the current value of the property we created called SimpleAsyncPayload. Convert the value of the property to an integer. Increment the value. Store the incremented value back into the TestCase property called SimpleAsyncPayload. The script should look something like the following: Groovy Script Editor – Manipulate Payload At this point we can test the script to see if it is working by simply running the TestCase (left-click on the green triangle in the upper left-hand corner of the TestCase editor). To verify if it ran correctly, we can look at the value of the SimpleAsyncPayload property which should now be 1: TestCase Editor – Run Results All that is left to complete the TestCase is to append another step of type Test Request. The information required to append the request is a name and an operation to invoke. In this example we will use the default name and select the SimpleAsyncBPELProcessBingd -> process as the operation (any other information being requested, simply use the defaults unless you are calling an asynchronous operation then do not add any assertions). We are now in familiar ground with the Test Request editor. Depending upon the type of operation you are invoking (synchronous or asynchronous), please update the request with the necessary information (e.g., callback information for asynchronous operations). We will now tweak the Test Request payload to retrieve the value of the SimpleAsyncPayload property. The soapUI editor makes this very simple: right-click in the payload and navigate to the property (e.g., right-click > Get Data.. > TestCase: [Groovy TestCase] > Property [SimpleAsyncPayload]): Test Request Editor – Insert Property Value Your payload should now look something like the following: Test Request Editor – Inserted Property Value Just like before, we are now ready to run the TestCase. If everything goes as expected we should see a response like the following: Message Viewer – Results of TestCase Run We are now setup to be able to run a stress test where the payload will change for each request. This simple example can be expanded to include multiple payload values, complex calculations in the scripts, or whatever can be done via the soapUI scripting. • Removing a File Association

  I found a rather simple way to remove a file association (default program) tonight that I thought others might find useful.  I found it after discovering that Windows 7 doesn't provide a straight-forward way of removing an association.Windows 7 provides a nice interface in the Control Panel for changing associations (Programs > Default Programs > Set Associations), but once you have one you cannot get rid of it.  The Registry is an obvious choice, because that's where the associations are stored.  In fact, the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT hive has the association, but there is also a key you need to delete somewhere in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive.Doing a little poking around, I discovered a command line program called ASSOC that'll do it.  And typing HELP ASSOC confirms that it was what I was looking for.  The solution to my problem turned out to be as simple as typing ASSOC .BIN="" on the command line.

• How to autohide Unity 2D?

  In the regular Unity 3D, I used Compiz Config Manager where I could config the Unity-Plugin to autohide the left start-bar and not to show it when moving my mouse to the left. So it was perfect for using Docky. But with Unity 2D the Unity settings don't have any effect. How can I completely hide the start-panel and just have it shown when pressing the windows-key? With the following: dconf write /com/canonical/unity-2d/launcher/hide-mode 1 dconf write /com/canonical/unity-2d/launcher/use-strut false it still opens the bar when going with my mouse to the left.

• How do I get Unity working again after installing the wrong video driver?

  First off I did something stupid. I downloaded a Nvidia driver even though I have an integrated chipset. After installation my unity was still working. However, when I restarted my computer I got an error message saying that I can't run unity. I uninstalled the Nvidia driver. I restarted my computer. Unity still does not work. In the terminal I type "unity" and everything looks okay until I get three error messages that say this: Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". followed by: Compiz (opengl) - Fatal: glXCreateContext failed Compiz (bailer) - Info: Ensuring a shell for your session jesse@jesse-PC:~$ Cannot register the panel shell: there is already one running.
