• Hybrid Graphics Functional won't work with my Asus UL30V anymore

  The problem is that I am no longer able to boot in compatibility mode for just turning on my Nvidia graphics to install the driver. Because no login screen will appear if Ubuntu is loading. In Ubuntu 11.10 I was able to activate nvidia graphics only' option this way: 1) Change BIOS to 'compatibility mode' which will turn off the Intel card. 2) Install the Nvidia proprietary driver using Ubuntu's driver finder (Additional Drivers) and then reboot. I was not interested using only the Intel graphics, for the sake of battery life. Now I have both cards running and they drain my battery life dramatically. And the main problem of this configuration no OpenGL is available, so I can't play any games any more. At this point, I have a pre-solution. I uninstalled the nvidia drivers and installed bumblebee. Now the Intel card is recognized. I would prefer to run just the nvidia card as in Ubuntu 11.10 but for now this is better than nothing. Does anybody else have the same problem?

• Disable discrete AMD GPU

  My notebook has two graphic cards and it suffers from severe overheating after installing Ubuntu (no problem with Windows 7 on the same machine). I figured out that the problem may be in the graphic card and I would like to disable the discrete one. I followed some tutorials on this topic (for example http://planetoss.com/articles/how-to-disable-the-discrete-amd-graphics-card-in-linux/). But the problem is, that after executing the commands, nothing really happens and both GPU are still running. • Added resolution not working after upgrading to 12.04

  After upgrading, my screen resolution (added by xrandr comands on the start) did not work like before. Messages appear showing some errors (that i have never had in 11.10). "No se pudo aplicar la configuración almacenada para los monitores"/"Can't apply the stored configuration for the monitors." This script didn't work either. xrandr --newmode "1280x1024_60.00" 109.00 1280 1368 1496 1712 1024 1027 1034 1063 -hsync +vsync xrandr --addmode VGA1 1280x1024_60.00 xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1280x1024_60.00 I also tryed deleting monitors.xml but, nothing. This only erase the window message. It's been sayd that ##It's a normal buggy and well know problem for Pc's with Intel integrated video cards.## The new version of gnome-settings-daemon stores its configuration information in dconf rather than gconf. I tryed something, but the problem persist. This is what i did. Install the dconf-tools package, and then run dconf-editor. In the tree on the left, navigate org - gnome - settings-daemon - plugins - xrandr. Uncheck the active checkbox. restart your XServer (Ctrl+Alt+Backspace) (It didn't worked out for me, but it may be helpful to someone)

• How to SEO Optimize Javascript Image Loader?

  I am building an image-centric catalog website. It catalogs collectible gaming cards numbering 100,000+ pages. Competitor sites recieve millions of hits each month, so with the possibility of excessive traffic, I need to moderate image bandwidth while also optimizing for image SEO. I'm looking for some tips on doing so. Each page on the site features one card with appropriate tags and descriptions. There are however four images for each card - one on matte cardstock, one on foil cardstock, one digital, and one digital foil. In a world with unlimited bandwidth and no-wait page loads, I'd simply embed all four images on the main product page with titles, alt tags, and captions to rank them according to their version keyword. In reality a javascript gallery image loader seems appropriate. Here is a simplified example of my current code. Would this affect SEO in any way? Should I be doing anything differently? Note that I don't want to create a page for each image as I'd have to duplicate the card tags and descriptions on each one, diluting PR for the main page. • Should actors in a game be responsible for drawing themselves?

  I am very new to game development, but not to programming. I am (again) playing around with a Pong type game using JavaScript's canvas element. I have created a Paddle object which has the following properties... width height x y colour I also have a Pong object which has properties such as... width height backgroundColour draw(). The draw() method currently is resetting the canvas and that is where a question came up. Should the Paddle object have a draw() method responsible for its drawing, or should the draw() of the Pong object be responsible for drawing its actors (I assume that is the correct term, please correct me if I'm incorrect). I figured that it would be advantagous for the Paddle to draw itself, as I instantiate two objects, Player and Enemy. If it were not in the Pong's draw(), I'd need to write similar code twice. What is the best practice here? Thanks.

  I am looking for a CMS where I can layout the page from scratch using HTML/PHP/CSS and simply enter code such as:- FOR EACH (listOfArticles) SORT mostRecent CATEGORY news LIMIT 5 <div class="articleTitle">{title}</div> <div class="arcielBody">{body}</div> END to get a list of the five most recent articles of a certain category in the relevant place. Does such a thing exist anymore? Unless my mind is playing tricks on me, the CMSs of five or ten years ago had this approach. I am thinking of MovableType and the now defunct CityDesk. It seems to me that CMSs these days have a 'templates first' approach. I.E. you must always choose a template before doing anything - which I find really painful. Learning how to design these structured templates also seems overly painful. So can anyone help me in my quest? Thank you, Mark

• Use two networks at the same time?

  I want to use Ubuntu 10.10 Server in a classroom, a computer lab whose bandwidth is provided by a local cable ISP. That's no problem, though the school network has an IP printer that I want to use. I cannot reach the printer through the cable Internet. But, I have two network cards. How is it possible to use both networks at once? eth0 (static 192.168.1.254) is plugged into a four-port router, 192.168.1.1. On the public side of the four-port router is Internet provided by the cable company. I also have the classroom workstations plugged into a switch. The switch is plugged into the four-port router. The whole classroom is wired into the cable Internet. The other NIC, eth1, could it be plugged into an Ethernet jack in the wall? It uses the school network, and I might receive by DHCP an IP address like 10.140.10.100, with the printer on maybe 10.120.50.10. I was thinking about installing the printer on the server so that it could be shared with the workstations. But how does this work? Can I just plug eth1 into the school network and access both LANs? • How to disable automatic login?

  I was playing around with "User accounts" and somehow set automatic login. Now, when I start my PC, it just has one button named as "login". Clicking that button, directly logs me in to my PC. There is no music or no asking for password while logging in. As a side effect, it asks me separately for keyring password How to disable auto login and make login/keyring password unified again like before? NOTE: Attempting to disable Automatic Login from System Settings User Accounts does not work. • Strategy/algorithm to divide fair teams based on history

  We are a group of people playing floorball together on a regular basis. Every session starts with the daunting task of dividing teams... So what would be better than an application to pick teams automatically? So, given a history of team-combinations and results, and a list of people showing up for this particular session, what would be a good strategy to find the optimal teams? By optimal, I mean teams as equal as possible. Any ideas? • Sound works for only one user at a time

  I've noticed that sound becomes unavailable to me when someone else is logged into my machine and playing music (or has facebook open) in the other account. I've had to ask them to unlock their account and turn it off so I can get sound in my own stuff. Even in sound preferences, the hardware itself disappears and output is "dummy sound". Is there a way to prevent this from happening? What would be really good is if I could turn down the volume (or mute entirely) all the sounds on all other accounts on a per-user basis from my sound preferences without affecting whatever setting they have - essentially saying whenever user A is logged in, all sounds from user B's account are muted and anything from user C's account is at 50% while I can still have my own at full volume.

  To make it short: to switch to SessionMode (cache to server) in ASP.NET, you need to handle an event and set a property. Sounds easy – but you need to set it in the right place. The most popular blog post about this topic is from Vittorio. He advises to set IsSessionMode in WSFederationAuthenticationModule_SessionSecurityTokenCreated. Now there were some open questions on forum, like this one. So I decided to try it myself – and indeed it didn’t work for me as well. So I digged a little deeper, and after some trial and error I found the right place (in global.asax): void WSFederationAuthenticationModule_SecurityTokenValidated( object sender, SecurityTokenValidatedEventArgs e) {     FederatedAuthentication.SessionAuthenticationModule.IsSessionMode = true; } Not sure if anything has changed since Vittorio’s post – but this worked for me. While playing around, I also wrote a little diagnostics tool that allows you to look into the session cookie (for educational purposes). Will post that soon. HTH

• Technique to Display Multiple Browser Windows Tiled at Same time?

  I have a separate monitor that I use for Toodledo (a web-based task managment app), in which I like to display various views (Next Action Status, Waiting Status, Planning Status, and Overdue Due-Date items). I've been playing around with some add-ons on Firefox that allow you to split the browser, but they are cumbersome. I'm now trying Chrome, and opening 4 different browser windows that I've tiled on the screen in quadrants (I use the Compiz grid applet for this). This is not ideal as each browser replicates the URL bar and the tab, and I don't have opening ths windows automated upon restart. Chrome is great in managing screen real estate, but this is not ideal. In Firefox I tried various extension to hide interface elements, but it was very clunky... Am wondering whether anyyone has tried to do similar with TD, and how they achieved what I'm going after? Am wondering whether someone has a good technique for accomplishing what I'm looking for?

Hell Visual Studio will create them for us, to make things easy!The problem is, many a developer, and some a ITOgre, may leave these AppPrincipalIds sitting there and not clean them up when they are done playing. You can look for currently registered App Principals at https://yourtenant/_layouts/15/appprincipals.aspx The problem is, that URL shows you App Principals registered AND currently in use. Currently NOT in use App Principals are NOT shown on that page. The same issue applies on premises also, even though here I am talking specifically about Office 365. • Is it possible to stream music/video from an Apache server?

  I'm just starting to get into setting up a server. I've set up a basic Apache server to access some songs and movies. When I click one of the songs though, nothing happens. When I click one of the movies, sometimes it will open a new web page and act as though it is going to start playing, but never does. I know Apache is HTTP, not FTP and read somewhere that that could be a problem, but I'm uncertain of the differences. Anyway, is it possible to click on one of the songs and have it start streaming using, for example, Windows Media Player? If so, might someone either explain how to do so or direct me to where I can find it? Any information on retrieving media from an Apache server at this point would be most appreciated. -Edit- I don't know if it matters, but I'm using Windows 7 and Google Chrome

• No Sound in HTML5 and Google Chrome after update to 13.10

  After upgrading to Ubuntu 13.10 i have no sound for HTML5 players in Google Chrome Browser. Firefox works. Flash Players are working. No sound on Youtube when using HTML5. No sound on vimeo (They have html5 player as standard). When I open the soundapplication, google doesn't show up when I try to play a html5 video. But it shows up, when playing a Flash Video. • Managing time for success in the industry? [closed]

  So about a year ago I decided to pursue programming, specifically game development, as a career. I've always been a pretty avid gamer, from chucking turnips at Shy Guys' faces in the 90s, to downing Heroic Deathwing last week. Just recently though, I've been spending a LOT of time playing games and it's starting to show in my programming classes. Yesterday after a discouraging exam, I put my foot down and vowed to myself to keep the gaming:coding ratio in favor of the one that will hopefully pay the bills later on. I realize that knowing games well is a key part of being a good developer, but as I've been recently shown, there's a threshold of pixelated indulgence that must not be crossed if I'm ever going to land my dream job. I'm assuming many of you are quite enthusiastic about games as well. What advice would you give an aspiring programmer regarding time management? Thanks!! • Basic Ubuntu FTP Server

  I would like to setup a basic FTP server on my Ubuntu Server install. I have been playing with VSFTPD, but am having issues getting the server to allow me to create directories and copy files. I have set the system to allow local users, but it appears that doesn't mean I get access to create directories. This may be an instance where I need to be better grounded in Unbuntu server setup in order to configure this FTP server adequately. The end goal is to be able to move files from my local dev folder into my www folder for deployment. Directories need to be able to move as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Never Bet Against the Impossible

  My uncle used to say “If a man tells you that his car squirts milk in his eye when you lift the hood, don’t bet against that. You’ll end up with milk in your eye.” My friend Allen White tells me this is taken from a play (and was said about playing cards), but I think the sentiment holds, even in database work. I mentioned the other day that you should allow the other person to talk and actively listen before you propose a solution. Well, I saw a consultant “bet against the impossible”  the other day – and it bit her. She explained to the person telling her the problem that the situation simply couldn’t exist that way, and he proceeded to show her that it did. She got silent, typed a few things, muttered a little, and then said “well, must be something else.” She just couldn’t admit she was wrong. So don’t go there. If someone explains a problem to you with their database, listen with purpose, and then explore the troubleshooting steps you know to find the problem. But keep your absolutes to yourself. In fact, I have a friend that has recently sent me one of those. He connects to a system with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) version 2008 (if I recall correctly) and it shows a certain version number of the target system in the connection tab. Then he connects to it using SSMS 2008 R2 and gets a different number. Now, as far as I know, we didn’t change the connection string information, and that’s provided by the target system, so this is impossible. But I won’t tell him that. • What makes it hard to protect from hacks/bots in BF3 and Quake Live?

  After playing these games, asking other players/admins, and reading online I am led to believe that Quake Live and Battlefield 3 are frequented by bots and there are plenty of hacks of various kinds. I'm confused how this is possible, or even easy seeing how many players have access to these kinds of "tools" (sic). Isn't it possible for the game authors to digitally sign the game executables so that when they run, the server can ensure only the allowed client is sending commands, thus preventing any kind of abuse? I.e. every player command would be signed by a private key, or symmetrically encrypted (not sure which would make more sense). I understand that players can look at the running executable's behavior (memory etc.), but if games are apparently so easy to hack, shouldn't most apps be hacked as well (e.g. Skype, all DRM running on Windows etc.)?

• Audio playback: part of song is skipped

  I am experiencing some problems with music playback after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10. Basically some of the songs stop playing after some time as if the song has ended. It's always the same songs and the same time. The weird thing that it happens with Clementine and Totem but VLC doesn't have this problem and it also plays as it should on Windows. I'm guessing there might be a problem with some library that's shared with by the first two applications. I don't know if it's relevant but the file format of the audio files is flac(don't know if the problem affects mp3, because I don't have many of them).

• Asking about deleted partition at boot

  I have Ubuntu installed through Wubi. I also had another partition on my computer to try out the dev preview of Windows 8 aptly named Windows_8. After I was done playing, I deleted the Windows 8 partition and added the extra space back to my Win7/Wubi partition. Now every time I boot into Ubuntu, it tells me that it can't mount the partition and asks me if I want to recover or skip it. Is there a way to get Ubuntu to forget about this partition so I can skip this extra step in my boot? Thanks

  So I was playing around with NavigationNodeCollection, which is basically like SPNavigationNodeCollection just to make sure it worked without a hitch…Here is a little sample snippet of what should work: Unfortunately, you get a nice little javascript error that does not allow you to access the child nodes.  I tried a foreach() loop that gets a NavigationNode for each parent then loops through the NavigationNode.Children that did not work either.  I threw in two ExecuteQueryAsync statements thinking that would help, unfortunately adding a second statement provides no different results.  This appears to be a bug in the Silverlight Client Object Model.  I reported the error.  Hopefully, we get a fix by RTM so that we can use the easier method to get items into Silverlight, otherwise it’s back to WCF and cross domain policies.  We all love cross domain policies right? • How can I store all my level data in a single file instead of spread out over many files?

  I am currently generating my level data, and saving to disk to ensure that any modifications done to the level are saved. I am storing "chunks" of 2048x2048 pixels into a file. Whenever the player moves over a section that doesn't have a file associated with the position, a new file is created. This works great, and is very fast. My issue, is that as you are playing the file count gets larger and larger. I'm wondering what are techniques that can be used to alleviate the file count, without taking a performance hit. I am interested in how you would store/seek/update this data in a single file instead of multiple files efficiently.

• glx not working, optirun works, gnome in fallback mode

  It all started when I installed nvidia's own driver. Uninstalling it and reverting back to nvidia-current didn't solve the problem, so I have been playing with this for a while. Now nvidia-current seems to be functional. It seems glx support is missing, and my intel graphics is not responding. gnome loads only in fallback mode.
